DATES AND DYNASTIES IN EARLIEST INDIA by R.MORTON SMITH, TORONTO, CANADA, 1973

தந்தை தோழன்: இவர்என் மகளிர்;
அந்தணன், புலவன், கொண்டுவந் தனனே;

FROM TURKEY:

The Boğazköy Inscription (dated to roughly 1400–1380 BCE) is a cuneiform clay tablet recording a political treaty between Hittite King Suppiluliuma I and Mitanni King Shattiwaza (Matiwaza), discovered at the ancient Hittite capital of Hattusa (modern Boğazkale/Boğazköy in Turkey).

• Mitanni-Hittite Treaty: The document outlines a peace agreement and alliance between the two ancient Near Eastern kingdoms.

• Invoked Vedic Deities: As part of the treaty’s divine witnesses, four major Vedic gods are invoked: Mitra, Varuna, Indra, and the Nasatyas (the Ashvins).

• Order of Deities: The names appear in a sequence that is found in the Rig Veda according to Asko Parpola, the most famous Indus Valley Civilization Scholar.

FROM EGYPT

The Amarna letters of Dasaratha (historically and linguistically known as Tushratta) are a vital subset of the famous Amarna Letters archive discovered in Egypt.

Dasaratha/Tushratta was the ruler of Mitanni, a powerful empire located in northern Mesopotamia (modern-day Syria and Turkey) during the 14th century BCE. Written in Akkadian cuneiform (the international diplomatic language of the Late Bronze Age), his correspondence spans 13 letters cataloged as EA 17 through EA 29. They were addressed to Pharaohs Amenhotep III, Akhenaten, and Queen Mother Tiye.

• The “Hurrian Letter” (EA 24): While twelve of his letters are written in Akkadian, EA 24 stands out as an artifact of immense linguistic importance. Comprising 494 lines written almost entirely in the Western dialect of Hurrian, it remains the longest contiguous text surviving in the Hurrian language today.

• Dynastic Marriages: A central theme in his letters is negotiating political alliances through royal marriages. In letters like EA 19 and EA 22, Dasaratha arranges for his daughter, Princess Taduhepa (sometimes equated with Queen Kiya or Nefertiti in alternative historical theories), to marry Amenhotep III.

• Demands for Gold: Egypt controlled massive gold mines in Nubia, making it the financial powerhouse of the ancient world. Dasaratha frequently pleads with the Pharaoh to send gold, famously using variants of the phrase, “May my brother send gold in very great quantity… for gold is as common as dust in my brother’s land”.

• The Traveling Goddess (EA 23): In this letter, Dasaratha mentions sending a sacred, miraculous statue of the Hurrian goddess Šauška (Ishtar) of Nineveh to Egypt. It was meant to bless and heal an aging and ill Amenhotep III.

Historians and scholars are particularly fascinated by Dasaratha’s letters because they provide absolute archaeological evidence of Vedic culture in the ancient Near East.

The ruling elite of the Mitanni empire spoke a language with clear SANSKRIT roots. The cuneiform spelling of the king’s name—Tushratta—is widely accepted by linguists as the Akkadian rendering of the Sanskrit name Dasaratha (meaning “he who has ten chariots”) or Tvesharatha (“having splendid chariots”). Other Mitanni kings mentioned in these records bear names like Artatama (Rtatama, “most righteous”) and Sutarna (Sutarna, “good sun”).

PANINI SUTRA ABOUT 53 GENERATIONS

In Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī, Sūtra 2.1.19 states: “संख्या वंश्येन” (saṅkhyā vaṃśyena). This rule dictates that a numeral (saṅkhyā) is compounded with a term denoting a lineage or family descendant (vaṃśya), and the resulting compound is classified as an Avyayībhāva samāsa.

The phrase “त्रिपञ्चाशत् गौतमम्” (tripancāśat gautamam) is a classic illustrative example of this specific sūtra:

• त्रिपञ्चाशत् (tripancāśat): The numeral meaning 53.

• गौतमम् (gautamam): Refers to the descendants of the sage Gautama (a lineage / vaṃśya).

***

(Ekaviṃśatibhāradvājam) is a classic example of an अव्ययीभाव समास (Avyayībhāva compound) in Paninian grammar. It is formulated under the rule संख्या वंश्येन (२-१-१९) (Sūtra 2.1.19, often numbered 2.1.18 in some recensions).

• The Sūtra: Saṅkhyā vaṃśyena (संख्या वंश्येन) states that a numeral (संख्या) compounds with a word denoting a member of a lineage/family (वंश्य), resulting in an Avyayībhāva समास.

• Lineage Types: Panini explains that a lineage (vaṃśa) can be of two types:

            1. Vidyā (Learning/Guru paramparā): e.g., Dvimuni vyākaraṇam (The grammar belonging to the two sages—Pāṇini and Kātyāyana).

            2. Janma (Birth/Family descent): This is where our example fits.

• Laukika Vigraha (Literal Meaning): Ekaviṃśatibhāradvājāḥ (एकविंशतिभरद्वाजाः), which translates to “Twenty-one generations / descendants in the lineage of Sage Bharadwaja

TAMIL INSCRIPTION GIVES KALIYUGA IN DAYS!

The Parthivasekarapuram copper plate inscription (dated around 865 CE) of Ko Karunathadakkan states that 1,449,087 days of the Kali Yuga had passed.

• Parthivasekarapuram Copper Plate: Recorded in Tamil and points to the traditional commencement of the Kali Yuga around 3100–3102 BCE.

• Calculation Context: This total of 1,449,087 elapsed days corresponds historically to the mid-9th century CE dating of the record, showing that early South Indian epigraphy tracked time using exact day counts from the start of the Kali era.

HINDU WONDER – 57 GENERATIONS AT ONE GO! (Post No.7480)

(List of 57 generations of Gurus is attached at the end)

Hindus are the only people in the world who use geographical and historical data in their everyday ritual. No where in the world we can see such a historical sense. While they do Pujas in the temple or at home, they begin it with Sankalp (vow) in which they refer to Manvantara, Yuga, Year, Date, Day and their location on earth. It will even beat the google map. Because they have divided the entire northern hemisphere into several ‘dwips’ (land mass), and they say where in the world they do that ritual. Let us forget all these Mantra stuff and come to the real world!

Foreign ‘scholars’ who have no faith in Hinduism or practical experience accused Hindus of  people with no historical sense. They praised only one Kashmiri Brahmin as the first one with Historical sense. That Brahmin named Kalhana wrote Raja Tarangini (River of Kings) with the names of Kings and their periods which can be understood by foreigners. But surprise, surprise! the foreign ‘scholars’ rejected his first four chapters in Raja Tarangini saying it contains myths and unhistorical information.  It is like praising a beautiful woman and saying the part above her neck is Ugly!!! The fact of the matter is Kalhana challenges the date of Buddha, Kali Yuga, Kanishka etc which didn’t suit the ‘scholars’.

Let me come to the topic of the day!

I titled it as ‘57 generations at one go’. What is it?

Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad is the oldest of the 108 Upanishads. Even the jaundice eyed foreigners generously dated it as 850 BCE material. But Hindus believe it is still older which is proved by the internal evidence. This Big Forest (Brihad Aranyaka) Upanishad has a chapter called Vamsa Brahmana in which it gives 57 generations of teachers and two gods.

Foreign historians give 25 years per generation/ per king. But when it comes to forest living , peace loving, meditative, god fearing, vegetarian Gurus it must be longer than 25 years. So let me stretch it to 30 to 40 years and give a rough calculation.

30X 57 generations  =1710 years or

40 X 57 = 2280 years

Before 850 BCE which means , the first Guru for this particular Upanishad lived 2560 years or 3130 years before our time!!

Can we rust this information?

Yes , you can trust it because,

Even foreigners believe all that is said in Vedic literature is true, but they doubt Puranic information. But we have other strong proof from archaeological and historical sources.

Kabilar, the Brahmin poet, who contributed the highest number of Tamil poems to Sangam Tamil Corpus, sings about a chieftain named Irungovel in Purananuru verse 201 as the person in the 49th generation in his line. The most famous Tamil commentator Nacchinarkiniyar , a Brahmin belonging to Bharadwaja Gotra, says that the Yadavs came to Tamil Nadu with a group after Krishna’s demise. Kabilar lived 2000 years ago and if we add another (25 X49) 1225 years it means 3225 years. This is about Irugovel’s forefather’s  arrival in Tamil Nadu. I am referring it to prove that the number of generations is used commonly and to prove Hindus had this historical sense of accounting.

If one comes to all Mutts and Adeenams in Tamil Nadu one can see they always use the generations to say this ascetic is the 68th in the line of Acharyas or 157 th etc. This accounting generation is used even today.

Aihole Inscription and Parthivasekarapuram Copper Plates used Kaliyuga years even during fifth century.

ROME POPES AND NUMBERS

In the list of 57 generations we see some strange names of Rishis. That proves it is very ancient.

In the list we see several Rishis has the same name. This is very important. Hindus very often come across the names of Indra, Agastya, Visvamitra, Vasistha, Bhoja, Vikramditya, Sankaracharya, Janaka, Avvaiyar etc and get confused. The Pauranic speakers projected them as one person. It is incorrect. Look at the list of Popes in Vatican City.

Popes with the name of John – 23 Popes!

Benedict -16, Leo- 13, Gregory 16!

Go to the list of Pharaohs of Egypt; there are 14 Ramesses!

So, Hindus must number them like Westerners to avoid confusion (Eg. Pope John XIV, Gregory XIII).

One more information about Indian Geography in the list:-  One name has the prefix Vidharbi meaning he is from Vidharba region. So even thousands of years ago we have used the prefix showing the region. Most of Sangam Tamil Poets have prefix such as Madurai, Karur, Uraiyur etc showing where they came from. So they had geographical sense 2000 years ago.

If we read chapters after the ‘Vamsa Brahmana’ , we will come across several states in North India such as Videha (Bihar, Nepal), Panchala (Punjab, Haryana). Buddhist literature of sixth century BCE mentioned 16 Mega Kingdoms (Maha Janapada) in North India. Vedic literature belongs to a period long before Buddha’s time.

Now read the list and see that it goes beyond the time of Indus-Sarasvati River Civilization!
