The Poetical Works of Tiruloka Sitaram with Translation and Notes! Santhanam Nagarajan
The book under review titled, ‘The Poetical Works of Tiruloka Sitaram with Translation and Notes’ has 55 poems of the great Tamil poet Tiruloka Sitaram duly translated in English by Sekkizhar Adi-p-podi Dr T.N.Ramachandran.
Tiruloka Sitaram was born to Lokanatha Iyer and Meenakshi Sundarammal on 1-4-1917 at a small village called Thondaimanthurai in Trichy district in Tamilnadu, India. His father passed away in his third year and his uncle brought him up. His mother tongue was Telugu. He married Rajamani aged 10 at his 19th year. He started his life as a priest. He was very much interested in Tamil literature. He went to Ramasami padayachi, a great Tamil scholar and learnt all the Tamil epics like Kamba Ramayanam and Bharatham.
He started composing his own wonderful poems. He started publishing a Tamil magazine by name India Valiban and had written articles under the nickname Mandahasan. Later on he had used his own name for all of his writings. He was very much attracted by the poems of the great Poet Subramanya Bharathi. It became his habit not to spend a day without reading or quoting at least some lines from Bharatiyar.
The bond was so deep that he assumed himself as a spiritual son of Bharathi even though he had never seen the great poet as he was passed away during 1921. He went to the house of Chellammal Bharathi, the wife of Bharathi, during her last days. Chellammal breathed her last on his lap.
As a journalist he started a magazine by name Sivaji and the poems and articles published therein attracted the Tamil world. He lived only for 56 years and breathed his last on 23-8-1973.
His famous poem Gandarva Ganam describes the dawn, the evening in powerful words. The translation goes like this: The day dawned on Pothika’s peak And ‘neath the sprint that lay a crescent Was the ragged mountain-cave Its mammoth mouth wide agape ‘Twixt whose teeth, solemn and devout Flowed the flood onto the plain. We may compare these lines with Kubla Khan of Coleridge: “.. That deep romantic chasm which slanted Down the green hill.”
The Evening comes like this: The hasting Sun rushed headlong And smote the spring with million shafts; The frothy foam vaporescent In atoms rose as wondrous bow Which he eyed in delight great, The hunting bow on shoulder slacked. Here, the line ‘frothy foam vaporescent; may be compared to Milton’s ‘When vapours fired Impress the air” This is just one example to explain how the poetic mind of Tiruloka Sitaram explores the nature.
We have fifty-five such wonderful poems duly translated in English. The book is printed beautifully in such a way that one would not put it down without reading all the poems.
The translator T.N.Ramachandran has compared many of the poems with that of Shakespeare’s and concludes “ The thoughts of Donne and Coleridge are less powerful than those of Shakespeare who however finds a match in Tiruloka Sitaram”.

விழாவில் அவர் பேசியதாவது:-
மொகலாய மன்னர் ஔரங்கசிப் காலத்தில் பலமுறை தகர்க்கப்பட்ட வாரணாசி காசி விஸ்வநாதர் கோயிலை மேம்படுத்தும் பணிகள் நிறைவு பெற்றுள்ளது. பிரதமர் மோடியால் புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்ட அந்த கோயில் திறப்பு நிகழ்ச்சியை 13ம் தேதி நாம் பார்க்கலாம்.
கேதார்நாத் கோயிலில் உள்ள ஆதி சங்கராச்சாரியாரின் சிலை, கடந்த 2013ம் ஆண்டு அப்பகுதியில் ஏற்பட்ட வெள்ளத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. அது புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டு பிரதமர் மோடியால் திறக்கப்பட்டது.
பல காலமாக இந்து வழிபாட்டுத் தலங்கள் அவமானப்படுத்தப்பட்டு வந்தன. அவற்றின் பெருமைகளை மீட்டு வர யாரும் முன்வரவில்லை. 2014ம் ஆண்டு முழு பெரும்பான்மையுடன் மத்தியில் பிரதமர் மோடி ஆட்சி தொடங்கியது. இழந்த பெருமைகள் மீட்கப்பட்டதுடன், தற்போது இந்து வழிபாட்டு தலங்கள் எந்தவித அச்சமுமின்றி புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.
முன்பெல்லாம் மக்கள் கோயில்களுக்கு செல்ல வெட்கப்பட்டார்கள். தற்போது மோடி அரசாங்கம் என்ற புதிய சகாப்தம் தொடங்கி உள்ளது. கங்கை ஆரத்தி நிகழ்ச்சியில் பிரதமர் மோடி பங்கேற்றுள்ளார்.
கோயில்கள் என்பது வெறும் மத வழிபாட்டு மையங்களாக இல்லாமல், சமூக சேவை மையங்களாகவும் உள்ளன. வாழ்க்கையில் ஏமாற்றம் அடைந்தவர்கள் தங்கள் சிரமங்களைத் தாண்டி முன்னேறிச் செல்வதற்கான ஆற்றல் தரும் மையங்களாகவும் அவர் திகழ்கின்றன. இவ்வாறு தமது பேச்சில் மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சர் அமித் ஷா குறிப்பிட்டார். விஸ்வநாதர் கோவில் வளாகம்: காசியில் 13ல் பிரதமர் மோடி திறப்பு பிரதமர் மோடியின் சொந்த தொகுதியான, உத்தர பிரதேச மாநிலம் வாரணாசியில், கங்கை கரைகளுடன் விஸ்வநாதர் கோவிலை இணைக்கும் வகையில், 600 கோடி ரூபாயில் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள விஸ்வநாதர் கோவில் வளாகத்தை, பிரதமர் மோடி வரும், 13ம் தேதி திறந்து வைக்கிறார். விஸ்வநாதர் கோவிலை, கங்கை கரைகளுடன் இணைக்கும் வகையில், 600 கோடி ரூபாய் மதிப்பிலான காசி விஸ்வநாதர் கோவில் வளாக திட்டம், 2018ல் துவக்கப்பட்டது.

தமிழ் தாய் வாழ்த்து இறைவணக்கப் பாடலே
பாடும் போது எழுந்து நிற்க வேண்டும் என எந்த உத்தரவும் இல்லை:உயர்நீதிமன்ற மதுரை கிளை கருத்து
மதுரை:சென்னையில் நடந்த விழா ஒன்றில் தமிழ்தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடப்பட்ட போது காஞ்சி விஜயேந்திர சரஸ்வதி சுவாமிகள் அமர்ந்திருந்ததாக சர்ச்சை எழுந்த நிலையில், இதுதொடர்பான வழக்கை விசாரித்த உயர்நீதிமன்றம் மதுரை கிளை, ‛தமிழ்தாய் வாழ்த்து இறை வணக்கம் பாடலே. அப்பாடல் பாடப்படும் போது எழுந்திருக்க நிற்க வேண்டும் என எந்த உத்தரவும் இல்லை,’ என குறிப்பிட்டது. சென்னை மியூசிக் அகாடமியில் 2018 ஜன., 24ல் தமிழ் சமஸ்கிருத டிக் ஷனரி வெளியீட்டு விழா நடந்தது. அப்போதைய கவர்னர் பன்வாரிலால் புரோகித் வெளியிட்டார். காஞ்சி மடாதிபதி விஜயேந்திரசரஸ்வதி சுவாமிகள் பங்கேற்றார். இவ்விழாவில் தமிழ்தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடப்பட்ட போது மடாதிபதி அமர்ந்திருந்தாக சர்ச்சை எழுந்தது.
நாம்தமிழர் கட்சி நிர்வாகி கண்.இளங்கோ தலைமையில் 12 பேர் ராமேஸ்வரம் காஞ்சி மடத்தில் செருப்புகளுடன் நுழைந்து போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர். அவர் மீது காஞ்சி மடத்தின் மேலாளர் போலீசில் புகார் கொடுத்தார். அதன்படி கண்.இளங்கோ மீது போலீசார் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்தனர். அந்த வழக்கை ரத்து செய்ய கோரி கண்.இளங்கோ உயர்நீதிமன்றம் மதுரை கிளையில் மனு செய்தார்.
மனுவை விசாரித்த நீதிபதி ஜி.ஆர்.சுவாமிநாதன் பிறப்பித்த உத்தரவில் கூறியதாவது: மனுதாரர் தரப்பில் நடந்த சம்பவத்திற்கு வருத்தம் தெரிவித்து மடத்தின் மேலாளரிடம் கடிதம் வழங்கப்பட்டதாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. அதை மடத்தின் மேலாளரும் நீதிமன்றத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கிறார். இந்த விவகாரம் முடித்து வைக்கப்படுவதாக கருதுகிறேன். இந்த வழக்கில் சில விஷயங்களை குறிப்பிட வேண்டும். மனுதாரர் தமிழ் ஆர்வலரா என இந்த நீதிமன்றம் கேள்வி எழுப்பிய போது ஆம் என்றார். அவரிடம் ஐந்து திருக்குறளை தெரிவிக்க கேட்கப்பட்டது. அவரால் கற்க கசடற சொல்ல முடிந்தது. உழுதுண்டு வாழ்வாரே வாழ்வார் என்ற குறளை கூற கஷ்டப்பட்டார். இதை சுட்டிகாட்டுவதன் மூலம் மனுதாரரை சங்கடப்படுத்தவில்லை.
இருப்பினும் 1970 ஜூன் 17 ல் தமிழ்நாடு அரசு ஒரு உத்தரவு பிறப்பித்துள்ளது. அதில் அரசு துறைகள், கல்வி, உள்ளாட்சி நிறுவன விழாக்களில் தொடக்கமாக நீராருங்கடலுடுத்த என்ற தமிழ் தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடலை பாட வேண்டும் என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளது. மேலும் இசையமைப்பாளர் எம்.எஸ்.விஸ்வநாதன் இசையமைத்த இந்த பாடலை மோகன ராகத்தில் பாடவும் சுட்டிகாட்டியுள்ளது. எனவே தமிழ்தாய்வாழ்த்து இறை வணக்க பாடல் மட்டுமே. அது கீதம் இல்லை.
மத்திய அரசின் உள்துறை 2015 ஜன., 5ல் பிறப்பித்த உத்தரவில் தேசிய கீதம் பாடும்போது பார்வையாளர்கள் எழுந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது. அதன்படி சினிமா தியேட்டர்களில் படம் திரையிடுவதற்கு முன் தேசிய கீதம் இசைக்கவும், அனைவரும் எழுந்து நிற்கவும் அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளது. தமிழ்தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடல் இறை வணக்கம் பாடல் தான். தமிழ்தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடும் போது பார்வையாளர்கள் எழுந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என இதுவரை எந்த உத்தரவும் பிறப்பிக்கப்படவில்லை. இருப்பினும் தமிழ் தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடும் போது பார்வையாளர்கள் எழுந்து மரியாதை தருகின்றனர். சமூகத்தில் சந்நியாசிக்கு என சிறப்பு இடம் அளிக்கப்படுகிறது. அவர் தியான நிலையில் அமர்ந்திருந்தது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது XXX
சிவாலயங்களில் திருவாதிரை விழா துவங்கியது
தமிழ் நாட்டிலுள்ள சிதம்பரம் உள்ளிட்ட சிவன் கோவில்களில் திருவாதிரை விழா துவங்கியது நெல்லையப்பர், செப்பறை அழகிய கூத்தர் கோயில்களில் மார்கழி திருவாதிரை திருவிழா கொடியேற்றத்துடன் 11ம் தேதி காலை தொடங்கியது. நெல்லை டவுனில் பிரசித்திபெற்ற சுவாமி நெல்லையப்பர், காந்திமதி அம்பாள் கோயிலில் மார்கழி திருவாதிரை திருவிழா ஆண்டுதோறும் 10 நாட்கள் வெகு விமரிசையாக நடைபெறும். குற்றாலம் திருக்குற்றால நாதசுவாமி திருக்கோவிலில் திருவாதிரை திருவிழா கொடியேற்றத்துடன் துவங்கியது. வரும் 15ம் தேதி தேரோட்டம் நடக்கிறது. 18ம்தேதி காலை 10 மணிக்கு மேல் சித்திர சபையில் பச்சை சாத்தி தாண்டவ தீபாராதனை நடக்கிறது. 20ம் தேதி அதிகாலை 4 மணிக்கு மேல் சித்திர சபையில் ஆருத்ரா தரிசன தாண்டவ தீபாராதனையும், 5 மணிக்கு மேல் திரிகூட மண்டபத்தில் ஆருத்ரா தரிசன தாண்டவ தீபாராதனையும் நடக்கிறது. XXXX வடபழநி ஆண்டவர் கோவிலில் ஜன.,23ல் கும்பாபிஷேகம் ‘வடபழநி ஆண்டவர் கோவிலில், திருப்பணிகள் மிக நேர்த்தியாக நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன. அதன் கும்பாபிஷேகம் ஜன., 23ம் தேதி விமர்சையாக நடத்தப்படும்,” என அமைச்சர் சேகர்பாபு தெரிவித்தார். கும்பாபிஷேகத்திற்கான திருப்பணிகள் விரைவுப்படுத்தப்பட்டன. தற்போது, திருப்பணி இறுதி கட்டத்தை எட்டியுள்ளது.

‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ is prayer song, not National Anthem: Madras High Court
The ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’, an invocation, is only a prayer song and not a National Anthem and hence, there is no need for every one to remain in standing posture when it is rendered, the Madras High Court bench here has ruled.
Justice G R Swaminathan gave the ruling recently while quashing an FIR registered against “Nam Tamilar Katchi” (NTK) functionaries by the Remeswaram police in Ramanathapuram district, in 2018.
The then Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit released a Tamil-Sanskrit dictionary at a function held in Music Academy, Chennai in the presence of the Pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi on January 24, 2018.
When the invocation song to Mother Tamil, “Tamil Thai Vaazhthu” was played, the seer remained seated .
Kan Ilango, now associated with NTK and then part of “Tamilar Desiya Munnani”, and his men entered the branch of the Kanchi Mutt in Rameswaram, shouting slogans, condemning the Shankaracharya.
They allegedly entered the Mutt premises wearing footwear. When the Mutt manager protested, he was criminally intimidated. Hence, a case was registered against them for offences under various sections of the IPC including rioting and criminal intimidation.
Hence, the present criminal original petition from Ilango, challenging the FIR. Justice Swaminathan noted that Sec. 3 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 states whoever intentionally prevents the singing of the National Anthem or causes disturbance to any assembly engaged in such singing shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
Allowing the petition, the Madras HC also pointed out that there is no statutory or executive order requiring the attendees to stand up when Tamil Thai Vazhthu is sung. It was not a National Anthem.
But highest reverence and respect ought to be shown to Tamil Thai Vaazhthu. It is true that the members of the audience conventionally stand up whenever Tamil Thai Vaazhthu is sung.
But the question is whether this is the only mode in which respect can be shown. When we celebrate pluralism and diversity, insisting there can be only one way of showing respect, it reeks of hypocrisy.
One should not forget that a Sanyasi occupies a special place in social and cultural life. Emperors and Kings have prostrated before Sanyasis and Fakirs.
In the epics whenever a Sanyasi entered the royal court, the King will step down from his throne and pay his respects. On becoming a Sanyasi, the person suffers a civil death.
He must be taken to have a re-birth. A Sanyasi primarily leads a life of piety. When in prayer, he is invariably found in a meditative posture. Since Tamil invocation is a prayer song, a Sanyasi is certainly justified in sitting in a state of meditation.
In the instant case, the pontiff is seen sitting in a Dhyana (meditative) posture with his eyes closed. It was his way of expressing his reverence and respect for Mother Tamil, the judge said and also set aside the case pending before the Rameswaram police station.
XXXX Hindu centres of faith were left humiliated for years, but Modi govt restoring their glory: Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the centres of faith of the Hindu community were left humiliated for many years and nobody cared to bring back their glory until the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, which is now working “fearlessly” for the renovation of such sites.
He said earlier people used to be ashamed of visiting temples, but a new era began with the Modi government.
Shah was speaking here at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Umiyadham temple, dedicated to Maa Umiya, the reigning deity of the Kadva Patidar sect.
The temple and other buildings are being built a cost of Rs 1,500 crore on 74,000 square yards of land.
“For many years, the centres of faith of the Hindu community were left humiliated, and nobody took the initiative to bring the glory back until Modi came to power at the Centre with full majority,” he said while addressing a gathering.
Shah mentioned the Kashi Vishwanath corridor project at Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh that Modi will inaugurate on December 13, and the foundation stone ceremony of Rs 150 crore Vindhyachal Corridor Project (VCP) in Mirzapur that he performed in August this year.
“Today, as the foundation stone laying ceremony of a grand temple is being performed by Arya samaji (Governor of Gujarat) Acharya Devvrat, I would like to say that Modiji has worked fearlessly and with faith and respect for the renovation of our forgotten centres of faith,” Shah said.
The PM unveiled the statue of Adi Shankaracharya and revived the centre of faith of crores of Hindus at Kedarnath temple after the region was devastated by flash floods in 2013, he added.
“We will see the renovation of Kashi Vishwanath temple at the hands of (PM) Narendrabhai on December 13 that was destroyed in the era of Aurangzeb,” he said.
According to Shah, three months ago he himself laid the foundation stone for the construction of a grand temple of Hindu Goddess Ma Vindhyavashini at Mizapur in Uttar Pradesh, as the idol of the deity was hidden in a house due to the fear of attacks by Muslim invaders.
“We have seen how earlier people would be ashamed of visiting a temple. But a new era began in the country after Narendrabhai performed ‘ganga aarti’ after rubbing the ashes of Kashi Vishwanath following an invite by the President (to form the government at the Centre),” the minister said.
Shah said temples have not just been religious centres, but they are also centres of social service and centres of energy for those disappointed with life to get over their difficulties and move ahead.
On the occasion, the BJP leader praised the Patidar community and said the history of the upliftment of Gujarat and the country is linked to the community.
He also said that other organisations should learn from the Umiya Mata temple trust, which has set up a social and scientific system, where contributions from donors from the community are used to construct temples and ensure that nobody remains deprived.
XXXX National Conference calls for return of Pandits
The minority cell of the National Conference (NC) on Saturday passed three resolutions, which among others called for return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley and their political empowerment.
The resolutions, which also demanded passage of a bill for managing the affairs of temples and shrines of the community, were presented at the start of the day-long convention chaired by party president Farooq Abdullah here.
“The Kashmiri migrant Pandit community is yearning for their honourable return and rehabilitation for the past three decades. The issue is very important,” senior leader Anil Dhar said as he presented the “politically important” resolutions that were passed by a voice vote. UDUPI: As the Karnataka government has started providing boiled eggs and bananas to children studying in government-aided schools, there are objections to this decision by various quarters.
Coming to oppose the state government’s move on Thursday was Sri Vishwaprasanna Theertha Swamiji of Sri Pejavar Matha, Udupi.
Speaking to reporters here, the seer said that food is the choice of individuals and none can force it. Every community has its own food habit and the government’s job is not to force the kids to have eggs, he said.
Regarding the state government’s proposed bill against religious conversions, Pejavar seer said the religious conversions have spoiled many families and the recent incident where the entire family decided to perish in Mangaluru shows how cruel the religious conversion act is. This has to stop. If somebody is converting at will, it is acceptable. But forcible religious conversion is against social norms, he said.

The Karnataka government has announced building of Tunga Arathi mantaps in the state on the banks of Tungabhadra river, on the lines of Ganga Aarti in Kashi, at a cost of Rs 30 crore.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai made the announcement on Thursday.
Speaking after releasing the logo, audio record and T-shirt of Hara Jathre being organised by Panchamasali Gurupeetha based in Harihar, he stated that the project would be launched on January 14 and 15 as part of Hara Jathtre.

XXXX TEMPLE AUDITS ORDERED IN KARNATAKA The Karnataka government has ordered temples under its control to audit the finances after finding out that only 4 out of the 346 top category temples file the audit report every year. 34,563 temples are under Muzrai department’s control and many of them have not filed the reports for the past 10-15 years. This move comes after temple activists requested the government to audit temple finances repeatedly.
Out of the 34,563 temples under Muzrai department, 207 belong to Category-A(with annual income of Rs.25 lakhs in minimum), 139 belong to Category-B(with annual income from Rs.5 lakh to Rs.25 lakh) and 34,217 temples whose revenue is less than Rs.5 lakh belong to Category-C and are not required to audit. Annual Pushpayagam held with celestial grandeur in Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanoor on Thursday evening.
About 3.5tonnes of varieties of various flowers were offered to Goddess Sri Padmavathi Devi in this unique floral bath served at Sri Krishna Mukha Mandapam in four hours.

XXX Vellore’s Jalakandeshwar temple remains waterlogged It has been at least a couple of weeks since it stopped raining, but Jalakandeshwar temple in Vellore is still waterlogged. The temple was closed for worship 15 days ago. Though the challenge is huge considering the unprecedented rain, non-cooperation between the Central and State authorities and lack of proper communication within the State machinery has not helped matters. “In 1991 the temple was under water for almost 55 days, now we are facing a similar situation,” temple trustee Suresh Kumar. “At present, efforts are being made to drain water with pressure. Though rainwater is drained during the day, water seeps back at night.”
“The sluice gates to discharge water from the moat has not been maintained properly and encroachment of the water channel and areas surrounding the fish market is one of the major reasons for water stagnation,” he said. The temple authorities said, “The tank is huge and if water is released at the current rate, it will take a very long time to drain. We are planning to open the temple for devotees once the waterlogging issue resolves,” added the official.
Suresh Varadharajan, ASI senior conservation assistant, Vellore sub-circle told NEW INDIAN EXPRESS , “Removing encroachments and desilting is the only solution. When it rained continuously I had written a letter to the Collector asking to drain the temple tank. But works got delayed due to various reasons.”

எனது கருத்துக்கள் MY COMMENTS முதலில் கடைசி மந்திரத்தைப் பார்ப்போம் ; மந்திரத்தில் குதிரையும் இல்லை. தலையும் இல்லை. நாயுடன் ‘வியப்பான’ , ‘புதிரான’ PERPLEXED வேள்வி என்பது சிரியஸ் என்னும் நாய் நட்சத்திரத் தொடர்புடையதே. ஆறாவது காண்ட துதியில் இது வருவதையும் கண்டோம். எகிப்தியர் போல சிரியஸ் உதயத்தன்று சிறப்பான கொண்டாட்டம் இருந்திருக்கக் கூடும் ; அல்லது அந்த தினத்தில் நடந்த வேள்வியாக இருக்கலாம். இதே போல இரண்டு நட்சத்திரக் குறிப்புகள் மேலும் 3,4 துதிகளில் வருகிறது. அவை குறிப்பிட்ட நட்சத்திரத்தின் போது நடந்த வேள்விகள் என்பது என் கருத்து மந்திரம் 4 – புருஷ சூக்த விளக்கத்தில் உள்ளது (ரிக்.10-90)

MY JOURNALISM STUDENTS AT MADURAI UNIVERSITY IN 1980S
I had a teacher by name V G Srinivasan in Madurai Sethupathi High School where I studied up to school final (SSLC). His life mission was to establish Bharatiyar statue in the school, where the poet worked for over six months. VGS life breadth was Bharati. He can’t speak without quoting Bharati at anytime. Bharati (1882-1921) was the greatest Tamil poet of modern era. VGS was successful in erecting the statue in the school. He used to tell us that if we worship Bharati we can get good marks in the exams. We used to laugh at that time. Now we realise what he meant by that ; one would get self confidence and positive thoughts when one reads Bharati poems. Bharati ould inspire any one. After reading the Rig Veda and Atharvana Veda, I came to know that all the positive things said in the Vedas are used by Bharati. So VGS was right when he made the statement.
He taught one or two extra things in the class. He used to tell us that if you see a fake coin or outdated coin (not valid tender anymore) never ever recirculate it. If it is fake, cut it into two so that no one could use it again. As a school boy I also had the thrill of passing fake coins to some gullible person. Our usual victims were road side old aged vendors. In the semi dark condition they would take the invaild tender. Then we would have had the greatest satisfaction of achieving something great! Now I realise how foolish we were at the young age. By hook or crook we want to do something exciting. But after listening to my teacher VGS, I always dispose off the invalid tender or fake currencies so that they wouldn’t be reused.
Another thing I followed is to deposit the money that is found on the roads and other places, in the temple money box. What is not yours should go to the general public. VGS was not rich. But yet he used to send First Day Covers to my eldest brother whenever new stamps were released by the government. He gave us the stamps released by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose before his death. He used to bring all the visiting Tamil scholars to my house to introduce them to my father. Because of him I have been collecting stamps for over 60 years! Till Chinese Virus outbreak two years ago, there used to be two big stamp exhibitions in Febraury and September in London (Stampex). I never missed them for 30 years. I would always return with an empty vallet. Stamps are so tempting!
In Tamil you cant write a sentence without dotted consonants. When two words belonging to the same ‘varga’/class comes, we use the dotted letter ( and in the middle of certain words also they occur). Most of us will put only a ‘tiny viny’ dot. VGS used to tell us why are you so miserly? Draw a big round (Pujya) in stead of a tiny dot. I followed his advise from that day. Very small thing indeed! But when you follow it your hand writing looks more beautiful. He always throws upon you positive ideas/thoughts. Probably he got them from the great poet Bharatiyar. xxx
My failed Interviews! I have always worked in the filed of Tamil. For 43 yearsI I got jobs only related to Tamil language. Whenever I applied for jobs where Tamil language skill is required I was selected to that job just like that. Whenever I applied for other jobs, I failed. But there are some tips which may be useful to you. A great Siddha and Tamil saint Tirumular said ‘I came into this world by the grace of God, just to produce something good in Tamil’. Those words came into my mind whenever i got a job in the field of Tamil ! xxx Failure 1 I applied for some Administrative Officer job in London. In the interview they asked me how I would run the department with limited money available. I went on the topic for 15 to 20 minutes. They gave me some prompts and yet I couldn’t give them a satisfactory answer and so i didnt get the job.
In Western countries, you can always ask for feedbacks when you did not succeed in the interview. I asked for the feed back. They told me we expected the word BUDGET from you. But you told us how you would spend the money scrupulously. But you never mentioned the word budget or balancing the account sheet etc.
It is very true. If I had the experience of running a department with limited funding, then the budget, deficit, surplus would have figured in my answers. So I was a weak candidate. I tried to bite off more than what I could chew. xxx Failure 2 I applied for another PRO post in one Arts orgaisation. When i recounted my experience, i told the panel, I was a BBC broadaster in Bush House in London. My next floor colleague was a Hindi broadcaster whose wife was a prominet person in that field. When they asked me whether i know that lady , I told them yes I know SOMEBODY by name Mrs xyz . The panelists winked at each other to show their displeasure. Probably that lady was also in the panel!!! I should have told them politely, Yes I have heard about that eminent person. I know her name Mrs XYZ, but I have not come across her. I would use every oportunity to meet her.
So this is a lesson. Dont show disrespect to one who is respected by the people in the field. Needless to say I didnt get the job. xxx Failure No.3 I atteded an interview for a job as Spy in the most famous MI 6 (Military Intelligence 6 for spying foreigners and MI 5 for spying locals inside Britain). They asked me to deposit even my mobile phone, bags etc at the reception. But I was allowed to take my office bag with all the necessary passport and other documents required for the post. They asked whether three geneartions of our family were British. I said No. They indicated that i would stand as No.2 in the Q. Then they asked me, occasionallyi would be asked to listen to telephone conversations of XYZ people. When I told them I may not understand their accent, they told me they would train me on the job. I showed my disagreement. Then they allowed me to ask questions. ‘You told me occasionally I would be asked to give evidence in the court against the spies. What is the gurantee you give me for peaceful living?’ I asked. They told me that they wouldnt give me life time guarantee . Then I showed my disagreement saying ‘Oh No, No’ I didnt get through to the second level of interview! When i came out and put my hand in the bag to take a pen I saw a small scissor, razor blade, glue stick etc! I was laughing at my self. After depositing all security risky things at the counter, and passing through the electronic gate they still couldnt find my blade and scissor!! These things I always keep in my office bag to give tailored lessons to my Tamil sudents at SOAS, University of London. I have to quickly make new lessons by taking some cuttings from here and there and pasting them and photocopyng them!
xxx Swamiji Krishna’s advise Swamiji Krishna ,our Guru, used to say If you go to someone’s house, you eat something you dont like, dont say ‘it is not good or i dont like it’. Say ‘butter milk is very tasty! I liked it very much’.
One should not take it literally. One must read between the lines. The message is ‘Dont say anything negative; say something positive’. WHY I DONT EAT IN PUBLIC EVENTS?
I stopped eating in public functions in London for two reasons. I ran four organisations at the same time for 18 years and severd dinner right on at 8-30 pm to the satisfaction of everyone or at least most of them. I always chose four or five items and give them even pack lunch with the left over food. Once I attended an event and a teenager was adamant to take the serving task. His father warned him not to do it because he was not expeirenced. My turn to get the food came and this teenager asked me ‘Do you want this?’ and he head two laddles. Ponited out to another item, ‘do you want this?’ I said ‘of course I want both the items’. Her served half laddle of each. I wanted to slap him or throw the food on his face. But because it was run by a committe full of my friends, I controlled my anger.
And another abomiable thing was in most of their functions everybody got all the 15 times in two plates and threw most of them into dust bins. These two things made to make a vow not to eat in such places and unnecessarily curse them. They charged 20 pounds per head. So people thought that getting full plate and throwing them into dusbin is just. Till this date I eat only in AGMs where only twenty people only attend. You serve your self like buffet. MY MOTHER’S LESSON I also tried to serve food to the visiting relatives at my home. I was asking them, ‘Is it enough?’ after serving some dishes. My mother saw this and she called me into kitchen and told me, ‘Never ask any guest, Is it enough?’ Ask them, ‘Sir, Madam, Can I serve you more? It is very tasty; you would love to have it second time! You must make them eat more. So people who serve food also need proper training at home or in public.

பாராதியாருக்கு வானசாஸ்திரத்தில் அதிகமான ஈடுபாடு உண்டு. நிறைய பாடல்களில் இதைக் காண முடிகிறது. 100 அல்லது 125 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் சிரியஸ் நக்ஷத்திரம் SIRIUS STAR பற்றி செய்தி வெளியானவுடன் அது பற்றி கவிதை எழுதியது பலருக்கும் அதிகம் தெரியாது. தூமகேது என்ற தலைப்பில் ஹாலியின் வால் நட்சத்திரம் பற்றி அவர் எழுதிய கவிதை பற்றி முன்னரே (YEAR 2013) எழுதினேன். பாரதியார் பாடலில் சிரியஸ் பற்றி கூறும் தகவலில் சிறிது மாற்றம் உண்டு. அவர் காலத்தில் பத்திரிகைகளில் வந்த செய்தியை வைத்து அவர் எழுதியது சரியே . சிரியஸ் நட்சத்திரம் பற்றி உலக மக்களுக்கு முதல் முதல் முதலில் சொன்னவர்கள் வேத கால ரிஷிகள்தான். அதர்வண வேதத்தில் இரண்டு பாடல்கள் இருக்கின்றன. அதில் ஒரு பாடலில் பிளாக் ஹோல் BLACK HOLES எனப்படும் கருந்துளைகள் பற்றிய விஷயமும் உளது . அது வெள்ளைக்காரர்களுக்கு என்னெவென்று 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் தெரியாததால் ‘அடையாளம் காண முடியாத ஒரு நட்சத்திரம்’ என்று அடிக்குறிப்பு எழுதிவிட்டார் RALPH TH GRIFFITH கிரிப்பித்.. முதலில் சிரியஸ் நட்சத்திரம் பற்றிய அதிசயச் செய்திகளைக் காண்போம்.
இது 8-5 ஒளி ஆண்டுகள் LIGHT YEARS தொலைவில் உள்ளது (பாரதியார் இதை 3 ஒளி ஆண்டு என்று எழுதியுள்ளார்). ஒளி என்பது ஒரு வினாடிக்கு 1,86,000 மைல் வேகத்தில் செல்லும். பிரபஞ்சத்தில் இதைவிட வேகமான பொருள் இல்லை என்பது விஞ்ஞானிகளின் கூற்று. (நான் மனோ வேகம் அதைவிட விரைவானது என்று எழுதியுள்ளேன்) ; சிரியஸ் விண்மீன்தான் வானத்தில் மிகவும் பிரகாசமான நட்சத்திரம். யாரும் இதைப் பார்க்காமல் இருக்க முடியாது.
வானத்தில் அதிகமாக ஒளிவிடும் கிரகம் வீனஸ் VENUS எனப்படும் வெள்ளி. இதைக் காலையிலும், வருடத்தில் சில மாதங்களுக்கு மாலையிலும் தொடுவவா னத்தில் காணலாம். இது மினுமினுக்காது NOT TWINKLING . இதைவிடப் பிரகாசமானது சிரியஸ் . இது மினுமினுக்கும் TWINKLING. இதுதான் நட்சத்திரத்துக்கும் கிரகத்துக்கும் உள்ள வேறுபாடு!
இன்று நாம் சிரியஸைப் பார்த்தோமானால் அதன் பழைய ஒளியை, அதாவது எட்டரை ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் புறப்பட்ட ஒளியைத்தான் காண்கிறோம். இன்று அது அழிந்தால்கூட நமக்கு எட்டரை ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒளி தெரியும்.
பாரதியார் காலத்தில் இதை பூமிக்கு அண்மையில் உள்ள நட்சத்திரம் என்ற கருத்து இருந்தது. இன்று ஆல்பா செண்டாரை , பீட்டா செண்டாரை என்பதே அருகிலுள்ள நட்சத்திரக் கூட்டம்.
சிரியஸ் பற்றிய ஒரு அதிசயமான விஷயம் அது இரட்டை நக்ஷத்திரம் BINARY STAR SYSTEM. சிரியஸ் ஏ என்னும் நக்ஷத்திரமும் சிரியஸ் பி என்னும் என்னும் நக்ஷத்திரமும் ஒன்றை ஒன்று வலம் வருகின்றன. இதற்கு சுமார் 50 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகும். இதை வேதங்கள் இரண்டு நாய்கள் TWO DOGS என்று குறிப்பிடுவதில் இருந்து அவர்களுக்கு இது இரட்டை விண்மீன் BINARY STARS என்பது தெரிந்தது நமக்குத் புரிகிறது. BLACK HOLES IN SIRIUS CONSTELLATION இதுவரை விஞ்ஞானிகள் கண்டுபிடிக்காத வேறொரு விஷயமும் அதர்வண வேத துதியில் உள்ளது. ‘ 3 காலகாஞ்சர்கள்’ அங்கே இருப்பதாகவும் ஓர் ரிஷி பாடுகிறார். இதை இதுவரை எந்த விஞ்ஞானிகளும் கண்டுபிடிக்கவில்லை. எதிர்காலத்தில் பிளாக் ஹோல் எனப்படும் கருந்துளைகள் அங்கேயும் இருப்பதாக வானியல் வல்லுநர்கள் அறிவித்தால் நாங்கள் அன்றே சொன்னோம் என்று இந்துக்கள் மார்தட்டிக்கொள்ளலாம். இந்த தகவல் இந்துக்களிடம் இருந்துதான் போயின என்பதற்கும் நமக்கு அருமையான சான்று கிடைத்துவிட்டது. அதர்வண வேதம் – ஆறாம் காண்டம்- சூக்தம் 253- காலகாஞ்சர்கள் அதர்வண வேதம் – ஏழாம் காண்டம்- சூக்தம் 320 – யக்ஞம் லத்தீன் கிரேக்க மொழிகளில் இதை DOG STAR நாய் நக்ஷத்திரம் என்று அழைப்பர். வேதத்தில் இரண்டு இடங்களிலும் இதை சுன , ஸ்வான என்று அழைப்பர். ‘ச’ என்பதை அவர்கள் ‘க’ என்ற எழுத்துடன் குழப்புவர். ஆகையால் அதை கேனிஸ் CANIS என்று உச்சரிக்கின்றனர் (CANIS MAJOR AND CANIS MINOR).
இந்த விஷயங்கள் நான் சொல்வது அல்ல. 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் கிரிப்பித் RALPH TH GRIFFITH முதலிய ஐரோப்பியர்கள் சொல்லிவிட்டனர். நாம் புதிதாகச் சொல்லுவது அதிலுள்ள கால காஞ்சர்கள் என்பன பிளாக் ஹோல் BLACKHOLE என்ற செய்தியே . இரட்டை நாய்கள் TWO DOGS என்ற தொடர் வேறு ஒரு சூக்கத்தில் வருகிறது .
முதலில் பாரதி எழுதிய பாடலைப் படியுங்கள் . அதில் அவர் ஒரு காதம் என்பதை பத்து மைல்களுக்கு சற்று குறைவாகக் கணக்கிட்டுள்ளார். அது சரியே . ஊணர் = யவனர் (சங்கத்தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் இது லத்தீன் மொழி பேசிய ரோமானியர்களைக் குறிக்கும். சம்ஸ்க்ருத இலக்கியங்களில் இது கிரேக்க மொழி பேசிய கிரேக்கர்களையும் வடமேற்கு இந்தியாவில் வாழ்ந்த ஜாதியினரையும் குறிக்கும் )

2.Westerners speak of a star called Sirius, it is reckoned That its rays , travelling at the same speed, takes three years to reach this mantala- the earth If so, is it easy for thought to fix its distance?
3.Oh men,hear this! This star among innuerable stars it is said, nearest to the earth- a mere millet Again there is a star whose rays take Three thousand light years to reach the earth.
4.Know that the human insects with manifold pains Devised but defective instruments to discover these (stars). And there are billions and billions of stars far, far away Which cannot be spotted through these tools at all.

மஹாகவி பாரதியாரின் நினைவு நூற்றாண்டை ஒட்டி விசேஷமாகத் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு தினமணி நாளிதழால் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த மலரில் நான்கு பகுதிகள் அமைந்துள்ளன. முதல் பகுதியில் காந்திஜி, ராஜாஜி, திரு.வி,க., வ.உ.சி., வ.வே.சு ஐயர், பரலி சு.நெல்லையப்பர், பாரதிதாசன், செல்லம்மா பாரதி, சோமசுந்தர பாரதி, தங்கம்மாள் பாரதி, சகுந்தலா பாரதி, யதுகிரி அம்மாள், வ.ரா., ரா.கனகலிங்கம், வையாபுரிப் பிள்ளை, சுத்தானந்த பாரதியார், பி. ஸ்ரீ., நாமக்கல் கவிஞர், ம.பொ.சிவஞானம், திருலோக சீதாராம், ரா.அ.பத்மநாபன், ஜீவா, ஜெயகாந்தன், கண்ணதாசன், சக்கரை செட்டியார், கி.வா.ஜகந்நாதன் பெ.சு.மணி ஆகிய 27 பாரதி ஆர்வலர்கள்/ நெருங்கிய குடும்பத்தார், சுற்றத்தார் ஆகியோரது அருமையான கட்டுரைகள் தொகுத்து வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இரண்டாம் பகுதியில் பாரதியாரின் ஐந்து புகைப்படங்கள் காட்சி தருகின்றன. மூன்றாம் பகுதியில் 13 அறிஞர்களின் கட்டுரைகளும் நான்காம் பகுதியில் இன்னும் 6 கட்டுரைகளும் தொகுத்துத் தரப்பட்டுள்ளன. 178 பக்கங்கள் கொண்ட மலராக அமைந்துள்ளது இது. காந்திஜி பற்றிய கட்டுரையில், பாரதியாரின் பாடல்களை பர்மா அரசாங்கத்தின் யோசனையின் படி அல்லது கட்டளையின் படி சென்னை அரசாங்கம் பறிமுதல் செய்யப்பட்டதை எதிர்த்து மஹாத்மா காந்திஜி தனது கடும் கண்டனத்தைத் தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார். அடுத்து 1958ஆம் ஆண்டு தினமணி சுடரில் ராஜாஜி எழுதிய ஒரு கட்டுரை மிக அருமையாக இருக்கிறது. அந்தக் கட்டுரையின் இறுதியில் அவர் குறிப்பிடுவதாவது; “அன்னிய ஆட்சி தீர்ந்து நாம் சுதந்திரம் பெற்று விட்டதை அவர் பார்க்கவில்லை. சுதந்திரத்திற்காகப் பாடுபட்டதைப் பார்த்தே மகிழ்ந்தார். பாரதியைக் கொடுத்த தமிழ் வயல் நல்ல வயல். அந்த வயலைச் சரியாகப் பாதுகாத்து வருவோம். முள்ளும், பூண்டும் வளர்ந்து கெட்டுப் போக விட மாட்டோம். பாரதி பிறந்த நாட்டில் பொய்யும் பித்தலாட்டமும் இருக்கலாமா, வேண்டாம்.” ராஜாஜியின் வார்த்தைகள் இந்தக் காலத்திற்கு மிகவும் பொருத்தமாக அமைகிறது. மாமா பாரதியார் என்று வ.உ.சி அவர்கள் தனது அனுபவங்களை விளக்கும் கட்டுரை மிக அருமையாக உள்ளது. நாட்டில் புதிய இயக்கம் பிறந்ததும் அதற்கேற்ற ஒரு புதிய கவி தோன்றினார் என்று கூறும் வ.வே.சு. ஐயர் அவர் பெயர் சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார் என்பதை அனைவரும் கண்டு பிடிப்பார்கள் என்று அறுதியிட்டு உறுதி கூறுகிறார் தனது ‘மறு மலர்ச்சிக் கவிஞர்’ என்ற கட்டுரையில். பாரதியின் கடைசி நாளை பரலி. சு. நெல்லையப்பர் உருக்கமாக விவரிக்கிறார் தனது கட்டுரையில். பாரதியாருடனான தனது முதல் சந்திப்பை பாரதி தாசன் தனது ‘ரவிவர்மா பரமசிவப் பட பாரதி’ என்ற கட்டுரையில் சுவைபட விவரிக்கிறார். படிக்க சுவாரசியமாக அமையும் இந்தக் கட்டுரை பலரும் அறியாத புது விவரங்களைத் தருகிறது. செல்லம்மா பாரதி, தங்கம்மாள் பாரதி, சகுந்தலா பாரதி ஆகியோர் பாரதியின் உற்ற குடும்பத்தார். அவர் தம் கட்டுரைகள் சுவையான சொந்த அனுபவங்களை விவரிக்கின்றன. யதுகிரி அம்மாள் புதுவையில் வசித்தவர். பாரதியாருடனான தனது நினைவுகளைத் தனி ஒரு நூலில் பதிவு செய்தவர். காணி நிலம் வேண்டும் என்ற தனது கட்டுரையில் புதுவையில் பெய்த கன மழை பற்றி விவரிக்கிறார். மகாகவி 16-11-1916 அன்று புது வீடு போன செய்தியையும் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. “பாரதியாரின் கவிதை ஆழமும் கரையும் காண முடியாத கடலாகும்” என்ற வ.ரா. அவர்களின் சரியான கணிப்பைத் தருகிறது அவரது ‘விசித்திரமான கவிதை’ என்ற கட்டுரை. பக்கத்திற்குப் பக்கம் பாரதியாரைப் பற்றிய அதிகாரபூர்வமான தகவல்களைப் படிக்கும் போது உள்ளம் குளிர்கிறது. மஹாகவியைப் பற்றி ஆராய ஏராளமான விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன. அவரைப் பற்றி முழுதுமாகக் கண்டவர் இது வரை யாருமில்லை. பாரதி பற்றிய ஒரு பெரும் களஞ்சியம் உருவாக வேண்டும். அதற்கு இப்படிப்பட்ட மலர்களும், நூல்களும் உதவியாக இருக்கும். நூற்றாண்டு நினைவு மலராக வந்திருக்கும் இந்த மலர் பாரதி ஆர்வலர்களுக்கு ஒரு வர பிரசாதம். தமிழர்கள் அனைவரும் வாங்கிப் படித்துத் தங்கள் இல்லத்தில் பாதுகாக்க வேண்டிய நூல்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை. பாரதி புகழ் ஓங்குக!
