Item 623 About Birds’ Omen
Hindus believe that birds and animals can show us the things going to happen soon by their movements. Jackal or foxes are watched mainly. But more common is augury from the birds. Until this day Tamil almanacs print the predictions from the ancient books. People watch whether the birds fly from left or right. noise or the calls from the birds are also considered. Even Varahamihira has some chapters on this topic in his encyclopaedic work Brihat Samhita.
Sanskrit word Sakunam (good or bad signs) is used in Tamil as well. Sakuna means Bird in Sanskrit
Sangam works mentioned the Bird Signs or augury in the following places:
Puram 20, 68, 117, 124, 204, Akam.151;351;

Item 624 About whales
Tamil poets who lived 2000 years ago also repeated what Kalidasa said in his Raghuvamsa (13-10). There are two verses in Natrinai (132 and 291) wherein we come across whales and sperm whale that contains ‘oil’ in its head.
An anonymous Tamil poet says in verse 132: “ Whole town is sleeping; there is no one who is awake. The mouthed whale gushes out water. When the cold and noisy wind blows into the streets there is drizzling. The water comes into the house through the holes in the door. Even the sharp toothed dog shivers.”
In verse 291, famous poet Kapilar says:-The water birds stand in the muddy waters like the soldiers of a king’s army to eat the fat/oil headed (Sperm) whale.(Probably the whale got stranded in the muddy water).
Another anonymous poem found in Natrinai 175 says, “the fishermen light the lamps made up of oyster shells, filled with fish oil in the coastal areas.
Big Whale Bone
Tamil poet Kamban who made Ramayana in Tamil also spoke about whale bone on the seashore (Kishkinda Canto, Dundhubi section). When Lord Rama saw a big and dry bone on the seashore, he asked Sugreeva what it was. He wondered whether it was a skeleton of a whale. But Sugreeva explained it was the skeleton of Dundhubi killed by Vali.

Item 627
About chakravaka bird Andril in Tamil
Symbol of Eternal Love: The Andril bird is a famous motif in Sangam literature, celebrated for its inseparable bond with its mate. The name literally translates to “not without” (அன்றில்) because the birds are believed to live, travel, and even die together, becoming an ultimate allegory for devoted, lifelong love.

Nimiththam in Tolkappaim
A grammar work considered as the oldest book in Tamil mentioned some beliefs in astrology and prophesy.
Nimiththam is a word used in Tamil Sangam works in several places. It means a happening taken as a sigh of things to come.
It is in third chapter called Porul Adikaram:-

Item 630
Seven Pindas to Crow!
Brahmins and those who believe in ancient funeral rites or annual remembrance day (Thithi) ceremonies offer rice balls to the crows. Crows and Sesame seeds, both black in colour are associated with Yama, God of Death, who is also black in colour. Offering of Seven Pindas (cooked rice balls) to the crows is mentioned in Kuru.210

Item 631
Bad omens and Nightmares
Hindus interpreted dreams according to their age-old beliefs. Westerners like Jung and Freud interpret dreams in a different way.
Tamil poems show their belief in good and bad dreams.
Anything that happens in an abnormal way or unusual manner that is also considered a bad omen.
One woman worried about the oil lamp suddenly going off. One bard worries about out of tune sound from his lyre.
Following poems have such remarks: Puram .260, 280, Kuru. 218, 298, Puram.238

Item 632
Ghost busting measures
Like other cultures Tamils also believed in ghosts and bad spirits.
When a woman gave birth to a baby or in the battle fields and crematoriums the ghosts are active, they believed.
They used the smoke of the white mustard to drive away such bird spirits. White mustard is Aiyavi in Tamil.
Puram.281, 296,

Item 633
Don’t Look Back in Crematoriums
Crematoriums are scary places for most of the people. Tamils and in general all Hindus, are told not to look back or turn back when they leave the crematorium.
We may guess the reasons. The burning bodies of the beloved may give them nightmares. Moreover, it is said, the workers there beat the bodies with long poles to make them remain in the pyre. If someone sees it may hurt one’s feelings. They may even think that the dead person is rising alive.
Tamils say Don’t look back in the following poems: Puram 356, 363, Kuru.231

Picture of Tirumalai Nayak Mahal/ Palace from 1956 TVS book on Madurai
Those who visit Madurai in Tamil Nadu never miss the world-famous Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple. For local people it is simply Meenaachchi koyil! Those who have more time will visit the famous palace of Tirumalai Nayak. For local people it is simply mahaal. Both the temple and the palace were built by the famous Nayak King Tirumalai Naayakkar. Though the temple has been there in the same place for at least 2000 years, Nayak was the one who constructed it with huge and tall and colourful towers.
Whenever our relatives visited us in Madurai, we used to take them to these places and Mariamman Teppakulam (huge tank) as well. As long as Madurai exists name and fame of the great Nayak king will survive. When we went there our favourite activity was enjoying the smoothness of the mighty tall shining white colonnades/pillars. We used to stroke it and try to hug it. Three or four boys were needed to circle it to join their hands. Nowadays the authorities don’t allow such things.
It is said that the Nayak king sought the help of an Italian architect to design the palace; but the secret of the mighty, strong, smooth colonnades is totally a local technique; it is given in a verse in Madurai Tiruppani Malai (Poem about Madurai Temple Renovation). It gives the secret behind the marble looking, strong tall colonades/pillars. The sculptors mixed lime, sugarcane juice, gooseberry, black gram, myrobalan, terminalia bellerica in a particular proportion; soaked some of them in water to get thick juice out of it. It will be good if our modern engineers or architects try this technique.
The palace called Mahal was built in 1636. At present only one fourth of the original structure remain. When it was built, it had two main parts called Swarga vilasa (Celestial Pavilion) and Ranga Vilasa. Besides these two royal residences, there were a theatre, a shrine, queens’ apartments, an armoury, a building for housing palanquins, royal music hall, a pond, gardens and quarters for relatives and workers. The rampart wall was 900 feet in length and 660 feet in width, and 40 feet in height.
Main palace has pillars 40 feet in height. An ancient description of the palace Tn tamil records that
this pavilion Swarga vilasa, is so constructed in a way that it to be said that in no other country is there a court equal to it, by reason of its splendid ornaments, their excellence, number, extent, curious workmanship and great beauty. In the middle of the hall there was a jewelled throne on which the king used to sit and reign. During the Nine Nights Festival – Navaratri Viza- Nayak used to sit there in special ornamental dress; other kings under his rule used to come and pay him homage.
Sceptre Festival
Picture by Dr A Narayanan, Sydney.
Old Picture of Tirumalai Nayak Mahal/ Palace
Like Travancore Maharajas ruling in the name of Anantha Padmanabhaswamy of Thiruvananthapuram temple, Tirumalai Nayak ruled part of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the name of Goddess Meenakshi. She was the Queen of Madurai 2000 years ago. Every year a function called Sceptre Festival was celebrated; in fact, a symbolic annual Sceptre Festival is done even today. Tirumalai Nayak combined two different festivals to unite Saivites and Vaishnavites and made Chitra Festival (April/May is Chitra month in Hindu Calendar). On the eighth day of the famous Chitra Festival, Sceptre festival was celebrated. The king would visit the temple and after special worship, receive from the hand of the goddess, the royal sceptre set with precious gems. The sceptre would be brought to the palace on the royal elephant accompanied by a great procession. The sceptre would be placed on the throne and would receive special worship from the hands of the king. The dignitaries, commanders, poets and other palace servants would receive royal gifts and royal titles on the occasion. The sceptre would be enthroned in this celestial pavilion the whole day and after due worship will be returned to the temple the next day. This function was symbolic of the country being ruled by Goddess Meenakshi, and the Nayak ruler administered the country as a servant of Goddess. Even Queen Mangammal and other successors continued this festival until the end of Nayak rule.
***
Three Important Points
Tirumalai Nayak worshipped Raja Rajeswari every day in the special Puja Hall in the palace.
In the music hall 18 different types of Musical instruments were used.
The Natakasala, that is the theatre, was 135 feet long by 68 feet wide and 40 feet in height, to the centre of the roof is 70 feet. Nayak used to watch performances by the dancing damsels with the help of oil lamps and torch bearers.
***
Notorious Thief Honoured and Beheaded!
One tradition says that a thief/kallan in Tamil, entered the palace by making a hole in the roof. It is said that the king used to sleep in a cot hung by long chains from hooks in the roof. The thief used the same chain to come down and steal all the royal jewels. The king promised a jagir (vast land) to anyone who would bring him the thief. The thief heard it and gave himself and claimed the award. The king gave him the jaghir and then promptly had him beheaded. For many years that chamber was used as a district court.
(A “jaghir” is a historical form of land grant in India dating back to the Islamic Sultanate and Mughal periods, where a ruler assigned the right to collect land taxes or administrative revenues from a specific district to a noble in exchange for military service or administrative duties.)
***
Ranga vilasa and Ten Pillars
Once the palace had a protective rampart wall 900 feet in length, 660 feet in width and 40 feet in height. Part of the place was covered with golden sheets. Elephant ivory was used for decorations.
We can see even now ten pillars. Originally this portion was part of a big palace. There was another palace like Celestial Pavilion (Swarga Viasa) called Ranga Vilasa (Colourful Pavilion). Tirumalai Nayak’s younger brother Muthialu Nayak lived there. There is a street named Navabathkana street now. This was also part of the palace.
Thirumalai Nayak’s grandson Chokkanatha Nayak changed the capital to Thiruchi and removed the throne, costly jewels and other treasures. He even demolished some parts of the dilapidated palace and took the building materials to Thiruchi to build a new palace. He could not succeed fully in his plans.
Slowly the reminder of the buildings got more dilapidated because of the rains. In 1858, Lord Napier, the then Governor of Madras, spent some money and restored the palace. Now it is maintained by the State Department of Archaeology.

Item 614 about Tiger
Two thousand year old Sangam Tamil poems praise tigers which will eat only when its prey falls on its right side. If it kills a deer and it falls on the left side, it won’t eat! Valam = right carries more weight than Itam=left in Tamil poems.
Tamil Ref. Puram.190, Akam 238, 252 etc.

What the heroine said to her friend, as the hero listened nearby
My bangles have slipped. My arms have become thin.
Is there any more modesty to lose, O friend, for the lord of the mountains with spiny bamboo fences, where bees with short wings, that buzz on the pollen of swaying glory lily flower clusters whose fragrance spreads into crevices and caves, appear like gems spit by snakes?

In Akam 88, there is an interesting scene. A wild boar is depicted to be very careful while entering the millet field. There is a picture in which a boar is about to walk into a trap kept by watchmen in the field but hearing a lizard’s tickling hesitates and slowly steps back and wisely retreats to its rocky dwelling.

Item 621 Crows and Guests
Crows are associated with guests!
Crows are found everywhere in India.
If crows caw in any house that means guests are going to come. There is some science behind it.
If anyone expects guests, then they make spicy, good smelling, special food and the crows can smell it easily.
Then they gather there. But Tamils believed that it can even prophesize about guest’s visit
A foster mother grieves over the elopement of her daughter with the hero and requests the crow to caw and foretell their return to her house; in grateful recognition of this timely help, she promises to feed it and its kith and kin with raw mutton and fat offered in a gold vessel (See Aink.391)

Anaadi anantam mahatah param dhruvam
nichaayya tat mrityu-mukhaat pramuchyate II Katha Upanishad (1.3.15)
This is soundless, touchless, colorless, tasteless, smell-less, beginningless, endless, decayless, deathless, changeless, and beyond Mahat. Having clearly known that, one is totally freed from the jaws of death. (1-3-15)
Athma is without sound, without touch, without form, without taste, without smell. So it is not available for outward perception by five jnanendriyas, ear, skin, eye, tongue and nose. It is without decay, and has no beginning or end; eternal and changeless; subtler than Hiranyagarbha, Brahman with total subtle universe. Realizing this Athma, one is freed from the notion “I am mortal, subject to death and decay”, which is called freedom from mortality.
1. The self-existent created the senses out-going: therefore, one sees outside and not the atman within. Some intelligent man, with his senses turned away, (from their object), desirous of immortality, sees the atman within. Katha Upanishad (2.1.1)
Yama said: The self-existent Supreme Lord inflicted an injury upon the sense-organs in creating them with outgoing tendencies; therefore, a man perceives only outer objects with them and not the inner Self. But a calm person, wishing for Immortality, beholds the inner Self with his eyes closed.
1-2-12. Contemplating with a concentrated mind, weaned from all external objects on the atman, ancient, hard to see, lodged in the inmost recess, located in intelligence, and seated amidst miserable surroundings, the intelligent man renounces joy and grief.
Or
Hidden Nature: The Self (Atman) is described as “difficult to be seen” (durdarśam), deeply hidden/mysterious (gūḍham), and residing in the secret cave of the heart (guhāhitaṃ).
The Method (Adhyātma Yoga): The verse provides one of the earliest explicit references to yoga as a spiritual tool. Through adhyātmayogādhigamena (meditation on the inner Self), the seeker comprehends the divine Atman.
Transcending Duality: Upon realizing this eternal Self, the wise person (dhīra) leaves both joy and sorrow (harṣaśokau jahāti) far behind, attaining absolute inner peace.
