மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் (Max Muller) உளறலுக்கு தியோடர் கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர் (Theodor Goldstucker) என்ற யூத மத சம்ஸ்க்ருத அறிஞர் கொடுத்த பதிலில் ஒரு அரிய செய்தி உளது .
கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்களின் வளைகாப்பு- ஸீமந்த சடங்கில் பிராணர்கள் முள்ளம்பன்றி முள்ளை (Quill of Porcupine) உபயோகிப்பது ஏன் என்று சிவபெருமான் ஞான ரஹஸ்ய காண்டம் என்னும் நூலில் கூறுகிறார்.
இந்துக்களுக்கு 2400 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் எழுத்தும் தெரியாது; புஸ்த்தகமும் தெரியாது என்று சம்ஸ்க்ருத வரலாற்றுப் புஸ்தகத்தில் மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் உளறி இருந்தார். ஏனெனில் பாணினி இதைப்பற்றி ஒன்றுமே கதைக்கவில்லை என்று முல்லர் கதை அளந்தார். கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர் இதையெல்லாம் மறுத்து பாணினி நூலில் இருந்தே ஆதாரங்களைத் தந்தார் ; இந்துக்களுக்கு எழுதவும் தெரியும்; வேதங்களையும் பாணினி இலக்கண நூலான ‘அஷ்டாத்யாயி’யையும் எழுதியே வைத்தனர். ஆனால் வேதத்தை மட்டும் வாய்மொழியாகத்தான் கற்கவேண்டும் என்று விதித்து, புஸ்தகம் உள்ள இந்த நாளிலும் அதைக் கடைப்பிடிக்கின்றனர் என்று கோல்டஸ்ட்க்கர் கூறினார். இவ்வளவுக்கும் இதை கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர் சொன்ன நாளில் அசோகர் கல்வெட்டுகளோ சிந்து-சரஸ்வதி நதி தீர நாகரீக எழுத்துக்களோ கண்டுபிடிக்கப்படவில்லை !
மாக்ஸ்முல்லர் தனது பசையற்ற வாதங்களுக்கு குமாரில பட்டரின் மீமாம்ச வார்த்திக்க நூலை வம்புக்கு இழுத்திருந்தார் . அதாவது பாணினி நூலுக்கு 1500 ஆண்டு காலத்துக்குப் பின்வந்த புஸ்தகம். . அப்படியா சேதி? அப்படின்னா , நானும் ஒரு புஸ்தகத்தைக் காட்டறேன். அதில் சிவ பெருமானே எழுத்தின் மஹிமை பற்றி விதந்து ஓதியிருக்கிறார் , பாரும் ஐயா ! என்று கோல்ட்ஸ்டாக்கர் ஞான காண்ட சேஷ ரஹஸ்யம் என்னும் சிவ-பார்வதி உரையாடல் ஸ்லோகங்களை எடுத்துக் காட்டினார் . அதில் பார்வதிக்கு சிவ பெருமான் சொல்கிறார் :-
!அன்பே, ஆருயிரே, தேனே , கற்கண்டே, மயிலே, குயிலே, மானே, மரகதமே, மாணிக்கமே — இவை எல்லாம் சம்ஸ்கிருதத்தில் அம்பாளின் பெயர்கள் — என்று சொல்லாமல் சொல்லிவிட்டு)
“நான் இதுவரை எழுத்துக்கள் பற்றி உனக்குச் சொன்ன இலக்கண விளக்கங்களை யார் ஒருவன் பூர்ஜ பத்திரத்தில், கோரோசனை, குங்குமப்பூ கலந்த மஞ்சள் வர்ணத்தில் கழுத்தில் அல்லது கையில் அல்லது தலையில் முள்ளம்பன்றி முள்ளை வைத்து எழுதுகிறானோ அவனுக்கு நோய்களே இருக்காது . வேறு ஒருவரைக் கொண்டும் எழுத வைக்கலாம். மூன்று நாட்களில் நோய்கள் பறந்தோடிப் போகும். ஒரு புத்திசாலி மனிதன் இதை எழுதி தன்னிடம் வைத்திருந்து அதை போற்றிப், புகழ்ந்து பாதுகாத்து, படித்து வந்தால், மலடியிடம் கூட, என்னைப் போன்ற ஒரு ஆண் மகனைப் பெறுவான் .
ஒரு நாட்டில் யுத்தம் நடந்தாலோ, அரசனின் கொடுங்கோலாட்சி நடந்தாலோ , புலிகள் தாக்கும் பயம் இருந்தாலோ அல்லது அது போன்ற பயம் பீதி தரும் நிகழ்வுகள் நடந்தாலோ நான் மேலே சொன்ன எழுத்து இலக்கணத்தை நினைத்த மாத்திரத்தில் பயமும் பீதியும் பறந்தோடிப் போகும் . இதற்கு மேல் நன் உனக்கு என்ன சொல்ல முடியும் ?
( பிர்ச் Birch Tree Leaf என்று ஆங்கிலத்தில் சொல்லப்படும் பூர்ஜ மரத்தின் இலையை வடக்கிலுள்ளோர் எழுதப் பயன்படுத்தினர். தெற்கிலுள்ளோர் பனை மர இலையை/ ஓலையைப் பயன்படுத்தினர்).
கோல்ட்ஸ்டாக்கர் மேற்கோள் காட்டிய ஸ்லோகங்களில் இரண்டு ரஹஸ்யங்கள் இருக்கின்றன . கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்களுக்கு சீமந்தம் – வளைகாப்பு நடக்கும் வீடுகளில் அய்யர் ஒரு முள்ளம் பன்றி முள்ளைக் கொண்டுவந்து கணவன் கையில் கொடுத்து, மந்திரம் சொல்லி, பெண்ணின் தலையில் வகிடு இழுக்கச் சொல்லுவார். அதாவது தலை முடி நடு வகிடு வழியாக முள்ளை அழுத்திக் கோடு கிழிக்கவேண்டும். கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்கள் வைத்தியத்தில் கோரோசனை , குங்குமப்பூவும் உண்டு. எல்லா பிராமணர் வீடுகளிலும் இவை இருக்கும். அவற்றையும் மஞ்சளையும் பயன்படுத்தி இருப்பார்கள் .
பீஷ்மர் காலத்தில் அம்புப் படுக்கையில் உதயமான, அக்யு பஞ்சர் அக்யூ பிரஸர் , (Acupuncture, Acupressure) வைத்தியத்தை முள்ளம் பன்றி முள் மூலமாகப் பின்பற்றுகிறோம். அதே நேரத்தில் எழுத்துக்களின் அபார மந்திர சக்தியையும் போற்றிப் பாதுகாக்க இந்த ‘டெக்னீக்’கை சிவபெருமான் சொல்லிக் கொடுக்கிறார். எழுத்துக்களின் மந்திர சக்தி பற்றியும் 51 எழுத்துக்களும் அம்பாளின் உருவத்தில் உள்ளது பற்றியும் இந்த 51 சப்தங்களும் தமிழிலும் இருப்பது பற்றியும் காஞ்சி பரமாசார்ய சுவாமிகள் (1894-1994) நீண்ட உரை ஆற்றியுள்ளார். ‘தெய்வத்தின் குரல்’ புஸ்தகங்களில் (Seven Parts) படித்து அறிக .
கோட்ஸ்ட்க்கர் எழுதிய பதிலில் மகாபாரத அனுசாசன பருவத்திலும் குமாரிலரின் வா ர்த்திகத்திலும் வேதங்களை எழுதிப் படிக்ககூடாதென்பதை மாக்ஸ்முல்லரே காட்டியிருப்பதை சொல்லிவிட்டு வேதங்களைப் பிழைபட மாற்றிச் சொல்லுவோரையும் இது கண்டிக்கிறது என்கிறார் .
‘எழுதா மறையளித்த எழுத்தறியும் பெருமாள்’ (பெரிய புராணப் பாடல்) என்ற தலைப்பில் நான் முன்னர் எழுதிய கட்டுரையில் 2000 ஆண்டுக்கு முந்தைய சங்க இலக்கிய புலவர்களுக்கும் இது தெரியும் என்று காட்டியுள்ளேன் .
வாழ்க எழுத்து அதிகாரம்! வளர்க முள்ளம்பன்றி முள் வைத்தியம்!!

எல்லா சினிமாக்களிலும், கட்டுரைகளிலும் வரும் இந்த மந்திரம் பிரதானமாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது .உண்மையில் சப்தபதி முடிந்தால்தான் கல்யாணம் முடிந்ததாக இந்து சட்டம் சொல்கிறது.
இந்த மந்திரம் சொல்லும்போதே ‘கெட்டி மேளம், கெட்டி மேளம்’ என்று கையை ஆட்டுகிறார்கள் . அப்போது நாம் வீசிப் போடும் பூவும் அட்சதையும் மணமக்களைத் தவிர , ஐயர் மற்றும் மாப்பிள்ளை, பெண் வீட்டாரின் சொந்த பந்தங்கள் தலையிலும் விழும்.
உடனே ‘டைனிங் ஹால்’ நோக்கி ஓடுவோம் ; இதில் வீடியோக்காரர், போட்டோகிராபர்கள் அட்டகாசம் வேறு ! மறுபடியும் தாலியைத் தொட்டுக்கொண்டு காமிராவையே பாருங்கள் என்று கட்டளையிடுவார்கள் . போட்டோவுக்காக இரண்டு தடவையா தாலி கட்ட முடியும்?
இந்த மங்களகரமான ஆரம்பத்துடன் ‘கல்யாண ஜோதிட’த்துக்கு வருவோம்.
ஆண் , பெண் இருவரும் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் பார்க்கும் முன் அவர்களுடைய ஜாதகங்கள்தான் ஒன்றை ஒன்று சந்திக்கும் ஜோதிடர் கைகளில் ! முதலில் வெவ்வேறு கோத்திரம் இருக்கிறதா என்று பார்த்துவிட்டு, வயது வித்தியாசம் சரியாக இருக்கிறதா என்று பார்த்துவிட்டு, நட்சத்திர பொருத்தம் இருக்கிறதா என்று பார்ப்பார்.
நட்சத்திரங்களில் மிக மிக உயர்ந்தவை என்று ரிஷி முனிவர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தது நான்கு நட்சத்த்திரங்கள் ஆகும் :–
மிருகஸீர்ஷம்
மகம்
சுவாதி
அனுஷம்
ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் இந்த நான்கு நடத்திரங்களில் ஒன்று இருக்குமானால் பொருத்தமே பார்க்கத் தேவையில்லை என்பது ஆன்றோர்வாக்கு !
எதற்கும் பொருத்தம் பார்த்துவிடலாமே? என்று கேட்பது பெற்றோர் வாக்கு ஆகும்.
ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் ஒரே நட்சத்திரம் இருந்தால் கல்யாணம் செய்யலாமா? என்ற கேள்வி எழும்.
அதற்கும் பதில் சொல்கிறார்கள் ஆன்றோர்கள்.
ஏக நட்சத்திரப் பொருத்தமுள்ளவை :–
ரோகிணி, திருவாதிரை, மகம், ஹஸ்தம்,
விசாகம், திருவோணம், உத்திரட்டாதி, ரேவதி .
இது தவிர மிக மிக முக்கியப் பொருத்தங்கள் இருக்கிறதா என்றும் பார்க்கவேண்டும். அது என்ன முக்கியப் பொருத்தம் என்று கேட்கிறீர்களா ?
தினம், கணம், யோனி, ராசி, ரஜ்ஜு ஆகிய ஐந்தும் முக்கியமானவை.
மேற்கண்ட ஐந்தும் ஒரே நட்சத்திரப் பொருத்தம் உடைய ஜாதகத்தில் இருக்காதெனினும் கீழ் கண்ட விஷயங்களை பார்ப்பார்கள் :-
திசா சந்திப்பு – ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் ஒரே திசை ஒரே நேரத்தில் நடக்கக் கூடாது.
பாவ சாமியம் – பாவ சாமியம் என்பது பெண்ணை விட, அரைப் பாகமாவது ஆணுக்கு அதிகமாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.
அவ்வளவுதான் ; பிறகு என்ன ?
மேள, தாளத்துடன் கல்யாணம்தான் .
ஆயினும் தற்காலத்தில் கல்யாணத்துக்கு முன்னே, செல் போனில் பேசிக்கொள்வதும், ஐந்து நட்சத்திர ஹோட்டல்களில் சந்திப்பதும் , 100 ஈ மெயில் பரிமாறிக்கொள்வதும் , போட்டோக்கள் — பல போஸ்களில் — பல வண்ண உடைகளில் அனுப்புவதும் நடக்கின்றன .
அதனால் என்ன ? நமக்குத்தான் லட்டு, அப்பளம் , வடை, பாயசம், போலி, தயிர்வடையுடன் அறு சுவை உண்டி கிடைக்கிறதே !!
(இதில் கண்ட விஷயங்களில் உங்களுக்கு ஏதேனும் கேள்விகள் இருந்தால் ஈ மெயில் அனுப்புங்கள் . ‘பெர்சனல்’ கேள்விகள் இருந்தால் உங்கள் பெயரை வெளியிட மாட்டோம். பதில் மட்டும் ‘பிளாக்’கில் வரும் . பொதுவான கேள்விகள் இருந்தால் உங்கள் பெயர், ஊருடன் வெளியிட்டு பதில் தருகிறோம். ஜோதிடம் வளர்க ! ஜோதிடர் வாழ்க !!)

BOOKS INDIANS SHOULD READ- Chapter 3-Part 1

NEVER TOO LATE TO BE GREAT MOST of us come from the great middle class. We lead small, insignificant lives! We have to study something – we do not have much choice, especially if we belong to the so called ‘forward ‘ communities! Then hunt for jobs. Here too there is not much choice! One has to take what comes along. And stick to it.
In recent years, the expanding IT sector offered job opportunities. But these jobs do not constitute a steady career, as in the old days. There is much job-hopping and mid-stream changes. Plus the constant pressure of keeping abreast of changes and learning new tricks. Happily, the youngsters have learned to live with such phenomena. But no one can say how long these trends will last, given the furious pace of technological change.
LOST DREAMS
The need to get some govt approved qualification and get a job weighs so heavy on the minds of youngsters that they have forgotten to dream and develop any greater vision! They have to choose subjects and select courses that have immediate market relevance. How many can afford to dream of being artists, poets, writers, inventors? Our educational system, still largely following the colonial contours, is directly linked to the job market; yet, it only delivers clerks! We still think of employment, not enterprise! And yet, surveys say that 50% of our graduates, including engineering graduates, are not employable!
The situation is made complex by the social changes that have taken place in the last 2-3 decades: especially the disintegration of the joint family which acted as a social safety net. Today a person cannot take for granted the support of an elder sibling or an uncle or other member of the extended family, till he is able to stand on his own.
Employment is not everything
Even if one has a steady, high paying job, one has to retire and then all the accumulated knowledge and so called experience count as nothing! When one looks back on a career of even 3+ decades, what can one count as one’s big achievements? Those working in a hierarchy can hardly out-perform the system. Exceptionally good things will be appropriated by bosses or stolen by others, or simply suppressed. In bureaucratic hierarchies, creativity will often invite trouble. It is safe to run with the pack. See what happens to our Administrative services: attracting so called bright people, it turns into a buffalo service- hard to move! As the famous Peter Principle states:
In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of Incompetence.
What people with middle class background fail to realise is that no matter how high they rise in a hierarchy, they can hardly call anything their own in their working space! They are basically time servers- one day they will be out! Official life is only a part of their total life, and for many these days, the retirement years can be quite long! They will feel an emptiness around them, in them, if they have failed to develop other aspects of their life and personality. Big sounding official designation is not the mark of true greatness or real achievement.
How we lose dreams
Most normal persons have dreamt of big things at some stage while young. Most of us have felt we are good at something sometime or other. But we become our own critics and dismiss them as unrealistic and unattainable. We race with time, anxious for quick employment, and settle to a routine as the system will shape or allow. While a job can often be an immediate necessity, it need not be a killer of dreams! We are under no orders to show quick results as for realising our dreams! While the job is for the belly, our dreams can be pursued to nourish our soul!
We may not all of us dream of becoming industrial tycoons or Narayana Murthys. But we are surely good at something? We surely love a subject? We do like an art or literature? What prevents us from pursuing these interests life long?
Timeframes
Most self-help and motivational books focus on the short-run, the quick results, offering quick-fix solutions for success here and now. But how many great people did really achieve their greatness in such quick fashion?

குலசங்க்யாம் ந கச்சந்தி யானி ஹீனானி வ்ருத்தத: ||
எத்தனை ஆண் மக்கள் இருந்தாலும் சரி, எவ்வளவு குதிரைகளும் பசுக்களும் இருந்தாலும் சரி, குடும்பத்தில் நல்லொழுக்கம் இல்லையேல் அப்படிப்பட்ட குடும்பங்கள் குடும்பங்களாகக் கருதப்பட மாட்டாது.
Such families, though thery are in possession of (any number of ) male members, horses and kine, if found in lacking in good conduct, can not be counted among families.

1 -8-16 3025 கீதையின் மஹிமை : சிருங்கேரி ஆசார்யர்!(ஞான ஆலயம்
“PANINI speaks more than once of affixes which are ‘seen’ or of a vowel which is ‘seen’ in words. Panini –3-2-178, 3-3-130, 3-2-75, 6-3-137, 3-2-101, 5-3-14
Kaiyata amongst others , refers to a written text of this grammar, even when there is no necessity whatever of making allusion to such a circumstance.
And when Prof Mmuller , as we shall presently see, avails himself of so late an authority as the Mimansa Varttikas of Kumarila to prove or to make plausible facts concerning the highest antiquity , I will quote , as a counterpart, another late work which introduces to us the god Siva himself as recommending the writing and wearing of grammatical texts as a means for the attainment of boons and the prevention of evils. The passage alluded to occurs in the chapter of a mystical dialogue between Siva and his wife, called JNAANA KAANDASESHA- RAHASYA, where Siva after having explained to Parvati the letters of the alphabet, concludes his instruction with the following words:-
If a man writes this grammatical explanation on a birch leaf, with a mixture of yellow pigment gorochana and saffron , or if he has it written by a scribe with the quill of a porcupine on his neck or his arm or head, he becomes, after three days, free from all disease; and if a wiseman, wishing progeny, reads and retains it attentively, he is sure to obtain a son , who will be like me, from his (previously) barren wife. If a battle rages or royal family spreads terror, or a tiger causes alarm or on similar occasions, all danger vanishes in merely remembering – this grammatical explanation – what further shall I tell you etc.

Max muller quotes, it is true, a passage from the Mahabharata , and one from Kumarila’s Varttikas, which condemn , the one who writing of the Veda, and the other learning it from a text/book; but I hold that neither quotation proves anything against the practice of writing the Veda at or before Panini’s time.
In Mahabharata , we read ,

That knowledge of truth is worthless which is acquired from the Veda , if the Veda has not been rightly comprehended, if it has been learnt from writing, or been received from a Sudra.”

“Max Muller himself says in his book,
The ancient literature of India was continually learnt by heart; and even at the present day when MSS have become so common, some of its more sacred portions must still be acquired by the pupil from the mouth of a teacher, and not from MSS”.
–This is the reply given to Max Muller by Theodor Goldstucker in his book ‘Panini – His Place in Sanskrit Literature’.
My comments
Even today Veda Patasalas (Vedic Schools) in Tamil Nadu teaches it only by mouth.
2000 year old Tamil Sangam literature also called the Vedas ‘Ezuthaa Karpu’ in Kuruntokai, which means Vedas are learnt without (from) writing. Periya Puranam, which is nearly 1000 years old, says ‘Unwritten Veda was given by Lord Siva who knows writing’ .
Tamils are very clear about it even 2000 years ago. Max Muller’s argument that Hindus did not know writing or a book became absurd after the discovery of Asokan Inscriptions throughout India and Indus-Sarasvati seals. Max Muller died in 1900, before all these discoveries. Goldstucker who died even before Max Muller, had a very clear and perspective outlook about writing in India.
Goldstucker is proved 100 percent correct!
My second comment is about the use of Porcupine quill. Even today Brahmins in Tamil Nadu use it to get a male child. On the day of Seemantham of a pregnant woman (done in 3rd or 6th month of pregnancy), the husband has to part her hair on the head with the quill of a porcupine. It is a sort of acupuncture or acupressure treatment. So this has been practised for long throughout India, if we go by the sloka in the above book.

In this connection, Kate Raworth mentions a conversation with an Indian engineer she had met in Germany. It is worth reproducing:
“When I asked whether he had opted to learn about ecologically smart technologies, he just shook his head and replied, ‘No. India has other priorities- we are not rich enough to worry about that yet.’ Surprised, I pointed out that almost half of India’s land is degraded, the nation’s groundwater levels are falling fast, and air pollution is the worst in the world. A flicker of recognition crossed his face, but he just smiled and repeated his words, ‘We still have other priorities.’ ”
I bet our politicians would be no better. They have all become slaves to defunct economists, as Lord Keynes said. I would say they are slaves to deranged economists.
Simon Kuznets the originator of the concept of GNP warned us:
” Distinctions must be kept in mind between quantity and quality of growth, between its costs and return, and between the short and the long term. Objectives should be explicit: goals for “more” growth should specify more growth of what and for what.”
End of growth?

Physicist Robert Ayers and ecological economist Benjamin Warr developed a model of growth including energy as an input, in addition to the two factors labour and capital, economists usually take. They found that the last two centuries of extraordinary economic growth are due to cheap fossil fuels. This trend is not likely to continue. “future GDP growth is not only not guaranteed, it is more than likely to end within a few decades.”
What does economics ultimately teach? Precisely nothing! We cannot set right the economy or the world with all the economics studied in the universities. For they teach mere theories which are not applicable to life. It takes a great economist to realise this. Once again we turn to Lord Keynes who said in 1922:
“The theory of economics does not furnish a body of settled conclusions immediately applicable to policy. It is a method rather than a doctrine, an apparatus of the mind, a technique of thinking, which helps its possessor to draw correct conclusions”
Life beyond growth
Economics by itself is a dubious discipline. It has to be understood in the light of a large number of other disciplines. It is said that war is too important a matter to be left to generals. We may say, economics is too dangerous to be left to economists or politicians. The public has to sharpen its common sense to question what goes on in the name of economics, develop enough economic wisdom to be able to judge matters and question economists and politicians. Kate Raworth ‘s book is a tremendous step in the direction of making us economically knowledgeable. It is sure to disturb a diligent reader, the wealth of material can be overwhelming but things are really so difficult. Let us not allow mainstream economists to fool us any longer. This book is like an encyclopedia, tremendously important.

2. Mahatma Gandhi was a deep thinker on economic matters. All his public life, he strove to make man economically independent and self-sufficient, and self-reliant. But Nehru completely buried Gandhiji’s ideas and adopted the Soviet ideology and system of planning. He made planning synonymous with growth and development. Most Indians are still under the spell of this notion. PM Modi abolished the Planning Commission, but has instituted another arrangement in its place! This shows we are all still slaves to defunct politicians!
3. We should realise that the so called antagonism between free and socialist economies is not so real in practice. There is really no “free” economy in the world- all economies are controlled by the government directly or indirectly to varying degrees. The real issue is whether the economy damages the environment or not. Here, both communist or socialist and so called free economies are equally damaging. They both adopt the same technologies with the same disastrous consequences.
