Sri Lankan mindset has not changed for 2300 years! Emperor Asoka sent his son Mahendran and his daughter Sangamitra to Sri Lanka with good intentions. But the rulers were not only stupid but also dangerous.  They became fanatics and destroyed all evidence of early Hinduism. It is still the same today.

Though there are 3000 different versions of Ramayana ( I have included the Kritis/compositions on Rama and Bhajans as well), whole world knows that Valmiki Ramayana is the oldest and genuine one. Based on which we see Raguvamsa of Kalidasa, Tamil Kamba Ramayana and several other pieces in Tamil Sangam Pura Nanuru, Aka Nanuru, Tamil epic Silappadikaram etc. In fact, there is no ancient literature in India without Rama’s name except Vedic literature. Because Vedas are from an early age, we don’t have direct evidence for Rama in Rig Veda.

Now the newspapers have published a story about research on Ravana’s Plane. It is good that they do research on Ravana’s plane. It is good Sri Lankan government has started Ramayana Tour. But the foundation is in bad shape. Kubera’s plane is called Ravana’s plane!

How and what?

1.Buddhists erased all traces of Rama and the pre- history of Sri Lanka. In Mahavamsa we have no talk of Rama or Ravana. They physically installed Buddha statues in some places where Hindu Gods were worshipped

2.Though Siva’s name is in Mahavamasa list of Kings, though Rama’s name is in some inscriptions (as peoples’ name) , it was not in Sri Lankan Buddhist literature of EARLY YEARS.

3.Let us forget all those things. Ravana, though a Shiva Bhakta, though a master of Veena, though well versed in Sama Veda, was condemned by one and all for his womanising and arrogance. He was shown his place only by a few kings like Karta Veerya Arjuna. And according to Nachinarkiniyar , he made a peace treaty with a Pandya king. But forgetting or hiding his abduction of Sita Devi, stupid Sri Lankans named their satellite ‘ RAVANA’. This is what I call the Sri Lankan mindset.

This reminds me of another interesting episode. The anti-Hindu , anti-Brahmin, Pro British Dravidian parties name many of their followers children after RAVANA. Recently one of those Ravanas contributed to Rama Janma Bhumi temple in Ayodhya. The RSS workers were surprised when he told them that his name was Ravana but he would like to contribute money to Rama’s temple in Ayodhya, that is being built now. When the RSS, VHP workers raised their brows with surprise, he himself related his story. His father was a staunch supporter of Anti Hindu Dravidian party and he was named by E V Ramasamy Naicker as Ravana when he was born. After joining Indian army, he became a great devotee of holy Bharat and Hinduism.

Though Ravana was 50% brahmin according to Hindu Mythology, he was condemned for his abduction of Sita Devi.

1.By eulogising and glorifying Ravana as the first pilot, by naming the satellite as Ravana, they send an immoral message to the world – “Abduct your neighbour’s wife like Ravana”.

2.A Few of you may ask why you don’t look at Ravana’s scientific skill, the other side of the coin. That is also portrayed wrong by Sri Lankan rulers. The plane he piloted was not his own. It belonged to Kubera, his half-brother, who ruled Himalayan Territory. No newspaper has told you this. Please read my 2013 article.

3.Ravana was projected as a baddy in Tamil Tevaram and Divya Prabhandham hymns. They are at least 1500 old. Sangam literature and Silappadikaram praised only RAMA; they are 2000-year-old

4.The mischievous Sinhalese of recent centuries distorted the story of Ravana and tried to project him as a hero or a pilot. This is the Buddhist mindset. This we can see even in 2500-year-old Jataka Stories. They BUDDHASIZED all Hindu stories in Dasaratha Jataka, Pandava Jataka etc.

5.Last but not the least Flying planes, Inter Galactic Travel, Extra Terrestrial Civilization, Theory of TIME dilation, Mano Vegam faster than the Speed of Light—all these are in Vedas. The peacock flying machine is in Sanskrit literature and Seevaka Chintamani in Tamil . The space shuttle is in Vana Parva of Mahabharata. Bhoja’s Vaimanika shastra and other Sanskrit literature give detailed description of flying machines. Hiding all these facts and projecting Ravana as the first pilot is mischievous; a stupid thing to do. They do it on a recent piece in Sinhalese.

6.Space research is welcome. But please correct that it is Kubera’s plane confiscated by Ravana, later donated to Rama by Vibhisana. IT IS A THOUGHT POWERED, EXPANDABLE, FASTEST SPACE SHUTTLE. VALMIKI SAYS IT TOOK RAMA TO AYODHYA FROM SRI LANKA IN ONE DAY!

Please don’t show Valmiki, Kamban, Ilango, Alvars and Nayanmars as stupid people. Give all the facts from Kubera to Vibhishana. Give all the stories about Ravana from Tamil literature which are earlier than Sinhalese literature. Withdraw the name of Ravana for satellite and give the name of Kubera. Don’t support abductions of others’ wives! Base all your facts on Original Ramayana. Don’t glorify Ravana.

The following news paper story provoked me to write the above matter.

Plane truth or flight of fancy? Sri Lanka to resume research on ‘aviator’ Ravana, India invited to join

There is a renewed interest in Sri Lanka about Ravana and his kingdom. The island nation has also sent a satellite called Ravana to the outer space to honour him

Sri Lanka wants to reclaim its ancient glory by conducting a detailed scientific research into its aviation past. Many Sri Lankans believe that King Ravana was the world’s first seasoned aviator and that during his days, the island had aircraft and airports. Dismissing the argument that these are mythological beliefs with no scientific backing, some enthusiasts have gone ahead researching on their own.

Two years ago, a conference of civil aviation experts, historians, archaeologists, scientists and geologists was held in Colombo to give a push to the idea. The conference had concluded that Ravana first flew his aircraft from Sri Lanka to India and back.

After the conference, the then Sri Lankan government had sanctioned an initial grant of 5 million Sri Lankan Rupee (SLR) to start the research. “The research was stopped due to COVID-19 lockdowns. The current government of the Rajapaksas is also interested in it. They have agreed to continue the project as an initiative of national importance. I expect the researchers to resume work by early next year,” said Shashi Danatunge, former vice chairman of the Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Authority.

Shashi, a history buff and also former CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket Board, has travelled across the island looking for traces and evidences of the country’s civil aviation past.

“I am convinced that Ravana is not a mythological figure. He was a real king and he indeed had aircraft and airports. They may not be today’s aircraft and airports. Certainly, the ancient Sri Lankans and Indians had access to superior technologies. We need to conduct an objective research into it,” Danatugne said.

He has also requested the Government of India to join the project believing it to be an important research for both countries to assert their ancient achievements.

Shashi is not alone in advocating for a research on this. Sunela Jayewardene, Sri Lanka’s leading environmental architect, in her book The Line of Lanka – Myths & Memories of An Island writes passionately about Ravana’s aviation.

“In the adult world, Ravana’s flight is fictitious, as any educated adult knows that the American Wright brothers invented flight as recently as the last century. But that belief stems from a few centuries of mental conditioning that the West has the most sophisticated technology,” she said.

She also argues that descriptions in the ancient texts of the Vimana or aircraft are too detailed and technical to be labelled as myth. Her uncle, the late Ray Wijewardene, a Sri Lankan pioneering modern pilot, had also backed this theory, she says.

“If I had doubts about ancient flights, they were swept away in a gust of excitement when he told me that he believed the Mayuranga kings (Ravana’s dynasty) had aircraft and even airports. They would have had gliders he said, and look for water nearby, not necessarily runways,” she writes.

According to her, there are places associated with aircraft landing such as Thotupolakandha and Ussangoda, Weheranganthota, Rumassala and Lakegala in Sri Lanka.

There is a renewed interest in Sri Lanka about Ravana and his kingdom. The island nation has also sent a satellite called Ravana to the outer space to honour him.

Ravana’s forces of land, sea and air—c. 2009 relief mural at the Sanmira Hotel, Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

In this essay, Justin Henry, a 2017-18 CAORC NEH Senior Research Fellow, discusses the origins and implications of Ravana’s flying machine, a popular figure in Sri Lankan versions of the Ramayana epic. All photos are courtesy of the author.

Last February while traveling along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, not far outside of Galle I revisited the museum at the former home of Martin Wickramasinghe (1890-1976)—the poet and novelist whose enduringly popular works inspired by his own rural village upbringing approximate him as something of the “Mark Twain” of the island nation.

In addition to offering a walkthrough of Wickramasinghe’s house and garden, the museum bills itself as a showcase of “traditional Sri Lankan heritage,” featuring everything from a carriage house displaying an assortment of horse and ox-drawn buggies and ploughs, to a gallery explaining the various masks and costumes used in Sinhala stage dramas, to an exhibition on the work of archaeologist Gill Juleff, who……………………………

Justin Henry holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School and currently teaches Religious Studies at Loyola University Chicago. Research for his current book project was completed as a CAORC NEH Senior Fellow in Sri Lanka in the spring of 2019, and this year he will spend four months in Tamil Nadu on a research grant through the American Institute of Indian Studies.
