Lakshmi (for London school children)

(THIS IS WRITTEN FOR LONDON SCHOOL CHILDREN AND MAY BE USED IN OTHER COUNTRIES AS WELL. I WILL POST MY SUMMARY ON HINDU GODS ONE BY ONE. LORD GANESH , SKANDA/MURUGA, LORD SHIVA, GODDESS PARVATI AND VISHNU ARE ALREADY POSTED HERE. THIS ‘GODDESS LAKSHMI’ IS THE SIXTH ESSAY IN THE SERIES.)

Lakshmi is the Goddess of Wealth. She is wife of Vishnu. Her other name is Sri.

In western countries names of people have Mr or Mrs before their names given by their father and mother. In Indian languages we have ‘Sri or Thiru’ before our names. It means the person has the blessing of Lakshmi. Shri or Sri has more meaning. Prosperity, Fortune, Auspiciousness ,Beauty etc.

When Lakshmi is alone she is shown standing on a lotus flower. She has four hands. if she holds lotus in both her hands she is called Padma vathi . Padma is lotus. In many pictures you will se her with two hands only.

In some South Indian temples she is shown with her husband Vishnu as Sri Devi and Bhu Devi . One and the same goddess Lakshmi is shown as the Earth/ Bhu and all the good things on Earth as Sri .

The vehicle of Lakshmi is owl. In Europe owl is called the bird of wisdom. In india great seers (Rishis) have bird names. Kausika is owl, Bharadwaja is Crow and Kashyapa is Tortoise.

In some pictures we see Lakshmi sitting on a lotus and showering gold coins from a pot .

Lakshmi’s Eight Forms are extremely popular. Each one is shown giving us our daily needs.

Eight is Ashta in Sanskrit.

Following are the Ashta/ Eight Lakshmis:-

1.Aadhi Lakshmi- Lakshmi who came from the Milky Ocean , First Lakshmi.

2.Aishwarya- Goddess who gives reputation and fame.

3.Dhanalakshmi- who gives us wealth and prosperity.

Dhanyalakshmi- who gives us food grains to make chapatis and rice.

Gaja Lakshmi with elephants on her sides- who gives us all useful animals.

Santana lakshmi- who gives us children; she gives more brothers and sisters to you.

Veeralakshmi – goddess who gives you power and strength which will make you a hero, a leader.

Vijaya lakshmi- goddess who gives us Victory, Success in al the examinations, competitions and jobs. You will succeed in all your works.

Though goddess is Only One, you worship her in a particular form so that you think and aim at Only One thing at a time.

As a boy or a girl, you want a particular toy or game or clothe and then you always talk about it to your mum and dad . Your parents also surprise you on your birthday with that gift.

Goddess Lakshmi helps you like your mother and fulfils your wishes.

If you don’t know a hymn or a mantra on Lakshmi just say,

“Jaya Lakshmi , Jaya Lakshmi, Jaya Lakshmi Paahimaam

Sri Lakshmi, Sri Lakshmi, Sri Lakshmi  Rakshamaam”

Paahi, Raksha means ‘Protect’

Maam means ‘Me’

Together it means “Protect Me, Save Me”.

Her famous temples are in Maharashtra. Mahaalakshmi temple in Mumbai and Kolhapur are famous. Ashta Lakshmi temple is in Chennai. In other temples she has a small shrine inside the temple.

Fate decides your Wealth, say Shakespeare, Bhartruhari and Valluvar (Post No.5810)

Bhartruhari and Tamil poet Valluvar agree on several points in this sloka of Niti Sataka.

1.A person’s wealth is decided by his fate

2.Fate is written by Brahma, Hindu God of Creation on one’s head or forehead.

3.Saint Vidyaranya’s story shows that Harihara and Bhukka got it even whenthey were in arid land. But Saint Vidyaranya couldn’tget in the present birth (Read the story given below)

4.Valluvar explains it more clearly. One needs effort to get wealth. Inspiration and perspiration give wealth. But that comes only when your Good Karma (Punya done in one’s previous birth) acts. If you have bad Karma (papa), then laziness will engulf you.

44. Whatever fate has written on the forehead of each,

that shall he obtain, whether it be poverty or riches.

His abode may be the desert, but he shall gain no more if

he live even on Mount Meru. Let your mind be constant.

Do not be miserable through envy of the rich. The

pitcher takes up the same quantity of water whether it be

from the well or the ocean.

Niti Sataka 1.44 ॥

Look at the following couplets: –

Tirukkural 371, 377, 380

Except as ordained by the Lord, who measures out each man’s meet

Even the millionaire cannot enjoy his hoards -377

Even a millionaire cannot enjoy his wealth except as ordained by Fate. This is exactly what Shakespeare meant when he said in Hamlet,

There is a Divinity that shapes our ends

Rough-hew them how we will– Hamlet

Another couplet

The constructive industry that produces wealth, and the destructive indolence

That brings about adversity in life ,are both the outcome of fate-371

The last couplet of the chapter on fate is as follows,

What is more potent than Fate? It forestalls every expedient one may resort to for averting it- 380

Another translation of the same couplet

Destiny is supreme, because its intended consummation will surely come about

Even if planned efforts are made to overcome it-380

STORY:- Vidyaranya found Golden Treasure!

Kanchi Shankaracharya (1894-1994 Paramacharya) in his Madras Discourses (1957-1959) gives the story of Vidyaranya’s discovery of gold and using it for establishing Vijayanagara Empire. Born as Madhava in a village in Karnataka he prayed to Goddess Mahalakshmi, Goddess of Wealth, for enormous amount of wealth. Lakshmi appeared before him and told him that he can’t enjoy wealth in this birth but it was possible for him to get it in the next birth. An idea flashed in his mind immediately. He told Goddess Lakshmi that he would take Sanyas ( Renunciation) which is considered a ‘second birth’ for a Hindu. Lakshmi agreed and gave him tons of gold. As soon as he saw rocks of gold and hills of gold he wept loudly. He knew that sanyas (renunciation ) means no attachment to anything worldly. “Oh My God, What Have I done? How can I touch gold when I have become a Sanyasi (an ascetic)”, he cried. Goddess Lakshmi disappeared while he was wondering what to do next.

At that time of history in 14th century AD, Muslim forces invaded South India and destroyed most of the temples along its routes. Madhava, who was later known as Vidyaranya, called two goatherds Harihara and Bhukka and asked them to build a city at the chosen place at the appointed auspicious time. Both of them did it and utilised the entire gold to establish a mighty and wealthy Hindu empire—later known as Vijaya Nagara Samrajya.

There is another story about Sri Vidyaranya, who later became Jagadguru of Sringeri Mutt, about making gold shower in the lands of Vijayanagara Empire. When there was a draught, Harihara and Bhukka approached Vidyaranya swami for help. He prayed to goddess Lakshmi again and there was a shower of gold in the capital city.

Water pot simile

Another interesting information in this sloka is Bhartruhari’s simile of water pot in in the ocean; This is followed by Tamil poetess Avvaiyar as well. Avvaiyar lived a few centuries after Bhartruhari. Another Avvaiyar lived before him in Sangam Age.

“Though you dip the measure/pitcher deep in the deep sea water, it will not contain four measures. O Maid ! Though riches and husband are choice, the happiness of the couple hangs on fate or destiny”—Muthurai by Poetess Avvaiyar

Tamil and Sanskrit poets are keen observers of nature. We have already seen how Dattatreya and others observed the nature and learnt from them. Crows and snakes are used by the poets and saints to teach us lot of things. Two poets warn us not to accumulate money so that we would not lose like the bees. William Wordsworth said, ‘Let Nature be your Teacher’; Hindu poets have been following it for over two thousand years. Here are two verses about the bees:

Chanakya says,

The pious people should always give food and money in charity, never should they accumulate them. The glory of the illustrious Karna, Bali and Vikramditya persists unabated even now. Look, the honey bees rub their hands and feet because of the despondency of losing honey that they had gathered for long.

A Tamil poet in Naladiyar says………………

Naladiyaar is a Tamil didactic book composed by Jain saints in Tamil. The poet Padumanaar, who compiled 400 verses, says,

“Those who vexing their own bodies by stinting in food and clothing, perform not acts of charity that ever remain undestroyed, but avariciously hoard up a great wealth, will lose it all. O Lord of the mountains, which touch the sky, the bees that are driven away from the honey they have collected bear testimony to this.

HOW TO ACQUIRE WEALTH – THE HINDU WAY

devi by akila

Written by S Nagarajan

Article no. 1724; dated 17 March 2015

Up loaded at 8-25 am London time

By SANTHANAM NAGARAJAN

“The Hindu religion is not only a religion, it is also a philosophy not only religion and philosophy, it is a way of life”, so said the well known English writer Somerset Maugham in his book Points of View.

The Hindu religion shows the way to lead the life successfully. Needless to say, for anybody’s success wealth is important.

The Goddess Mahalakshmi is being worshipped as the promoter of prosperity by Hindus.
Mahalakshmi means the great source of the best in life. It also means ‘worshipful’ and ‘engrossed in appearance’.

devi

Lakshmi also means the thinker of the welfare of the devotees.
Sri and Lakshmi are the two manifestations of Mahalakshmi. Though they are two, yet they are one. The word Sri means luminosity, beauty, reputation, glory, magnanimity, splendor, prosperity and consolation.

In order to acquire wealth, the Hindu way of life suggests to worship Lakshmi every morning after taking bath. The Sri Sukta praises Goddess Lakshmi.

This Sukta forms the chapter two, Varga six of the Khilas appended to Rig Veda. The Rig Veda is the oldest known text of the world. There are fifteen mantras in Sri Sukta.
The Sri Sukta can be recited or those who had not learnt the Sukta can hear recorded audio tapes.

Those who would like to have enormous wealth usefully recite the one hundred eight name of Goddess Lakshmi, every day.

bowl

There is one more secret. If you keep water in a small bowl in the north-east corner of your hall in your home it will remove all negative vibration and pave the way to get the wealth you want. Every morning the water in the bowl should be drained and fresh water should be filled up. The bowl should be kept in the same place every day. Amazing results could be observed within forty eight hours.

The presence of Lakshmi, who is firm and steady, bestows gold, cattle, horses and human beings.

She is seated on a Lotus flower. She is implored to bestow fame and prosperity.
Lakshmi resides where the fragrance of sandal and camphor exists! Those who desire that the goddess Sri should always reside in their family should be pure. The purity is required both mentally and physically!

And hence the dwelling place should always be kept clean.

There are certain symbols associated with welfare, glory, prosperity and worship. They are lotus, elephant, conch, swastika, pot, garments, diamond, crocodile, owl, discus, mace, bullock, wish fulfilling tree or Kalpa tree, jack fruit, armour and a pair of fish. Hence using these symbols appropriately will make Lakshmi’s presence.

The Hindu literature gives details of performing Lakshmi puja or Lakshmi worship.
We will learn more about Lakshmi worship in our next article.
