ஐயர் குடுமி அவிழ்ந்தது ஏன்? (Post No.6770)

2300 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வாழ்ந்த சாணக்கியன் பற்றி ஏராளமான கதைகள் உண்டு. பழங்கால பாரதத்தில் மூன்று ஹீரோக்கள் (Three Heroes) இருந்தனர். அவர்கள் – 1.விக்ரமாதித்தன், 2.உதயணன், 3.சாணக்கியன் ஆவர். இவர்கள் மூவரும் சரித்திர புருஷர்கள். கட்டுக்கதை, கற்பனை கதாபத்திரங்கள் அல்ல. இவர்களில், 2000 ஆண்டுக்கு முன் எழுந்த ஸம்ஸ்க்ருத நாடகங்களில் சாணக்கியன் பற்றி பல கதைகள் இருக்கின்றன. கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சம் மாறுதலுடன் அவை காணப்படும். ஆயினும் அவை அனைத்திலும் இழையோடும் கருத்து ஒன்றுதான்.

நவ நந்தர்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்ட 9 மன்னர்கள், இப்போது தமிழ்நாட்டிலுள்ள திராவிடர்களைப் போல ஒரு பக்கம் பூஜையும் மறு பக்கம் பிராமண எதிர்ப்பும் காட்டி வந்தனர். அவர்கள் க்ஷத்திரியர்கள் அல்ல. சாணக்கியனோ கறுப்பு நிற பார்ப்பான்; காக்கையுடன் அழகிலும் வண்ணத்திலும் போட்டி போடுவார்!!

அவர் ஒரு முறை பிராஹ்மண போஜனத்தில் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார். அவரை நந்தர்கள் கேலியும் கிண்டலும் செய்து பந்தியிலிருந்து தர தர என்று வெளியே இழுத்து அவமானப் படுத்தினர்.

திரவுபதி கூந்தலை அவிழ்த்த்து கௌரவர்களை அழிக்க சபதம் செய்தது போல அவரும் குடுமியை அவிழ்த்தார். இந்த நந்த வம்சத்தைப் பூண்டோடு அழிக்கும் வரை ஓய மாட்டேன் என்று சபதம் செய்து, முரா என்ற மயில் வளர்க்கும் கீழ் ஜாதியைச் சேர்ந்த மௌர்ய சந்திர குப்தனுக்குப் படைப் பயிற்சி அளித்தார். அவன் தலைமையில் மகத்தான மௌர்ய சாம்ராஜ்யம் உருவானது. நந்தர்களும் பிராமண எதிர்ப்பும் அடியோடு ஒழிந்தது. மௌர்ய சந்திர குப்தனின் மஹத்தான படைபலத்தை அறிந்த அலெக்ஸாண்டர் இந்தியாவுக்குள் நுழையாமல், காஷ்மீர் எல்லையுடன் திரும்பிப் போனார்.

கௌடில்யம் எனும் அர்த்த சாஸ்திரத்தை — உலகின் முதல் பொருளாதார புஸ்தகத்தை — எழுதி புகழும் பெற்றார். அவர் பெயரில் பல நீதி சாஸ்திர நூல்களும் உண்டு.

அத்தனையும் சொல்லும் message

மெஸ்ஸேஜ் ஒன்றுதான்  – முள்ளை முள்ளால் எடுக்கலாம்; வைரத்தை வைரத்தால் அறுக்கலாம். ஒரு தலித் ஜாதி ஆளைக் கொண்டே அதர்மத்தை அழிக்கலாம்.

வாழ்க ‘தலித்’ சந்திர குப்தன்  ! வளர்க பார்ப்பான் சாணக்கியன் புகழ்!!

இத்துடன் இணைத்துள்ள பகுதியில் ஐயர் குடுமியை அவிழ்த்த சுவையான சம்பவம் உளது. படித்து மகிழ்க.

உலகின் அதி வித்தியாசமான வல்லுநர்கள்! – 6

சுறா மீன்களைக் கண்டு அஞ்சாத மைக் ரட்ஸன்

சுறாமீன்கள் என்றாலே எல்லோருக்கும் நடுக்கம் ஏற்படும். ஆனால் மைக் ரட்ஸன் (Mike Rutzen) அவற்றிற்கு பயப்படாததோடு  பார்வையாளர்களையும் பாதுகாப்பான ஒரு கூண்டில் வைத்து அவற்றிற்கு நடுவே நிற்க வைத்து அற்புதமான அனுபவத்தை வழங்குகிறார் நடுக்கடலில்! 1970, அக்டோபர் 11ஆம் தேதி தென்னாப்பிரிக்காவில் ஜோஹன்னஸ்பர்க் நகரில் பிறந்த ரட்ஸன் ஒரு இயற்கை வளப் பாதுகாப்பாளர், திரைப்படத் தயாரிப்பாளர். சுறாமீன்களின் இனம் அருகி வருவதை எண்ணி மனம் வருந்திய இவர் அவற்றைப் பாதுகாக்கும் முயற்சிகளில் ஈடுபட்டு பெரும் புகழ் பெற்றார். 2007இல் எடுக்கப்பட்ட இவரது ஷார்க் மேன் (Sharkman) பிரபலமான டாகுமெண்டரி படம். வெள்ளைச் சுறாக்களைப் (White Sharks) பற்றி அதிகம் கவலைப்படும் இவரது சாகஸங்களை யூ டியூபில் உடனே காணலாம். உலகெங்கும் ஷார்க் கேஜ் டைவிங் (Cage diving) பிரபலமாக இவரே முக்கிய காரணம்!

ஓடும் காரின் முன் குட்டிக்கரணம் அடிக்கும் ஆரான் இவான்ஸ்

31 வயதே ஆகும் ஆரான் இவான்ஸ் (Aaron Evans) ஒரு அபூர்வப் பிறவி. 30 மைல் வேகத்தில் வரும் காரின் முன்னர் குட்டிக்கரணம் அடித்து அனைவரையும் அசர வைப்பவர் இவர். இப்படி மூன்று கார்கள் படு வேகத்தில் வர அவற்றின் முன் குட்டிக்கரணம் அடித்ததால் கின்னஸ் புக் ஆஃப் வேர்ல்ட் ரிகார்ட்ஸ் இவரை படுவேகமாகக் குட்டிக்கரணம் அடிப்பவர் என அங்கீகரித்துள்ளது. இவருக்கு ஸ்பிரிங் என்ற செல்லப் பெயரும் உண்டு. ப்ரூஸ் லீயின் திரைப்படத்தைப் பார்த்து தான் உத்வேகம் பெற்றதாக இவர் கூறுகிறார். தான் செய்வதை அனைவரும் செய்ய முடியும் என்று கூறும் இவர், அதற்கென தனக்கு உள்ளிருக்கும் ஆற்றலைப் பயிற்சி செய்து வெளிக் கொணரலாம் என்கிறார். தனது ஸ்டண்ட் சாகஸங்களை இவர் இப்போது உலகெங்கும் நிகழ்த்தி வருகிறார்.

பறவை மனிதன் ஜோக் சாமர்

ஜோக் சாமர் (Jokke Sommer) உயரமான இடங்களிலிருந்து குதிப்பதில் வல்லவர். பேர்ட் மேன் (Bird Man) என்ற செல்லப் பெயர் பெற்றவர்.  பிரான்ஸில் உள்ள 3842 மீட்டர் (12601 அடி) உயரமுள்ள அகுல்லி டு மிடி (Aguille du Midi) மலையிலிருந்து இவர் குதித்தது உலகின் மிகப் பெரிய சாகஸம் என்ற புகழைப் பெற்றது. பல லட்சம் பேர்கள் இவரது யூ டியூப் நிகழ்ச்சிகளைப் பார்த்துப் பரவசம் அடைகின்றனர்.

 காலநிலையைச் சொல்லும் ஆர்லாண்டோ செர்ரல்

ஆர்லாண்டோ செர்ரல் (Orlando L. Serrell) 1968 ஆம் ஆண்டு பிறந்தவர்.1979 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 17ஆம் தேதி பந்து ஒன்று அவரது தலையின் இடது பக்கத்தில் வந்து அடிக்க அன்றிலிருந்து அவருக்கு ஒரு விசேஷ திறமை உருவாயிற்று! அதாவது காலண்டரில் எந்த ஒரு தேதியைச் சொன்னாலும் அன்று காலநிலை, (தட்ப வெப்ப நிலை) எப்படி இருந்தது என்று சொல்லும் அரிய திறமையைப் பெற்றார். அது மட்டுமல்ல, அந்த விபத்து நடந்த தினத்திலிருந்து எந்த நாளைக் குறிப்பிட்டுக் கேட்டாலும் அன்று தான் என்ன செய்தேன் என்பதைத் தெளிவாகச் சொல்கிறார். இந்தத் திறமை அவருக்கு எப்படி ஏன் வந்தது என்று யாருக்கும் தெரியவில்லை. உலக விசித்திரங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

நாலரை லிட்டர் தண்ணீரை வயிற்றில் தேக்கும் டிக்ஸன் ஆப்பாங்!

சாதாரணமாக ஒருவர் தனது வயிற்றில் ஒரு லிட்டர் தண்ணீரைத் தான் கொண்டிருக்க முடியும். ஆனால் டிக்ஸன் ஆப்பாங் (Dickson Oppong) தனது வயிற்றில் நாலரை லிட்டர் தண்ணீரைத் தேக்கி வைத்துக் கொள்கிறார். உலகின் அதிசயமான வயிறைக் கொண்டவர் என்ற புகழையும் பெறுகிறார். 1967ஆம் ஆண்டு காணாவில் பிறந்த இவர் தனது நிகழ்ச்சிகளை பிரான்ஸ் உள்ளிட்ட பல நாடுகளிலும் நிகழ்த்தி வருகிறார்.

பீச்சி அடிக்கும் நீரூற்று நீரைப் போல ஒரே சமயத்தில் தன் வயிற்றில் உள்ள நாலரை லிட்டர் நீரையும் இவர் வாய் வழியே வெளியேற்றுவது அதிசய நிகழ்ச்சியாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது!

செங்குத்தான சுவர்களில் ஏறும் ஜோதி ராஜு

கர்நாடகத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ஜோதி ராஜு (Jyoti Raju).செங்குத்தான சுவர்களில் எந்த வித உதவி சாதனமும் இன்றி வெறுங்கைகளாலேயே சுவரைப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு ஏறுகிறார் இவர். சித்ரதுர்காவில் உள்ள கோட்டையில் இவர் ஏறியது இவருக்கு பெரும் புகழைத் தந்தது. குரங்கு மனிதன் (Monkey Man) என்ற செல்லப் பெயர் இவருக்கு உண்டு. எப்படி இந்த சாதனையைச் செய்ய உங்களால் முடிகிறது என்று கேட்ட போது, “குரங்குகளிடமிருந்து இதைக் கற்றேன்” என்று பதில் கூறினார் இவர்!

மின்சார மனிதன் ஸ்லாவிஷா பஜ்கிக்

ஸ்லாவிஷா பஜ்கிக் (Slavisha Pajkic) ஷாக் அடிக்கும் மனிதர். ஆம், ஒரு அறையில் உள்ள குளிர்ந்த நீரை, கொதிக்க வைக்கும் 97 டிகிரி செல்ஸியஸ் அளவு சூடாக்கி விடுவார். அதாவது அவரது உடம்பிலிருந்து மின்சாரம் நீரில் பாய்ந்து அதைக் கொதிக்க வைக்கும். அவருக்கு எலக்ட்ரிக் மேன் , பேட்டரி மேன் என்றெல்லாம் பெயர் உண்டு. தனது உடலில் மின்சாரத்தைச் சேமித்து வைத்துக் கொண்டு அதை நினைத்த நேரத்தில் வெளியிடும் சக்தி கொண்ட அபூர்வ மனிதர் இவர். சாராயத்தில் நனைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு துணி இவர் உடம்பின் மீது பட்டால் போதும், அது பற்றி எரியும்!

இதுவரை ஏராளமான வித்தியாசமான வல்லுநர்களைப் பார்த்தோம். இவர்கள் தாம் உலகை வியக்க வைக்கும் பெண்மணிகள்; வீரர்கள்!

இதே போல கைரேகையைப் பார்த்தவுடன் பிறந்த நாள், நட்சத்திரம் சொல்லும் நாடி ஜோதிடர்கள், ஒரு கம்பத்தின் உச்சியில் ஒரு நொடியில் ஏறும் வீரர்கள், கரகாட்டம், ஒயிலாட்டம் ஆகியவற்றில் சாதாரண மனிதத் திறனையும் மீறி விந்தைகள் காட்டுவோர், வர்மப்புள்ளியால் விந்தைகள் காட்டும் கரத்தாண்டக வீரர்கள் என்று இப்படிச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போகும் அளவு விந்தை வீரர்களை தமிழகத்திலும், ஏன், இந்தியாவின் பல பகுதிகளிலும் காணலாம். ஆனால் அவர்களை ஒருங்கிணைத்து அவர்கள் திறனைக் காட்டும் தொலைக்காட்சிகள் தான் இங்கு இல்லை போலும்! இது வருந்தத்தக்க ஒரு விஷயம் தானே!

 

 

 

 

அறிவியல் அறிஞர் வாழ்வில் .. ..

அமெரிக்கரான டாக்டர் ஸ்டோரி மஸ்க்ரேவ் (Dr. Story Musgrave) ஆறு பட்டங்களைப் பெற்றவர்; ஒரு மருத்துவர், கணித மேதை. கப்பல் படையில் வேலை பார்த்தவரும் கூட. அவர் நாஸா விண்ணில் ஏவிய விண்கலத்தில் சென்ற விண்வெளி வீரரும் கூட. அவர் 1994ஆம் ஆண்டு அளித்த ஒரு பேட்டியில் விண்ணில் தான் பார்த்த ஒரு அதிசயத்தை விளக்கினார் இப்படி”

“இரண்டு விண்வெளிப் பயணங்களில் எனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட அனுபவங்களுக்கு சரியான விளக்கமே எனக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லை. ஒரு பாம்பை நான் விண்வெளியில் பார்த்தேன்.ஏழு அல்லது எட்டு அடி நீளம் இருக்கும், அது தொடர்ந்து பின்னால் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. நீங்கள் விண்வெளியில் அதிகமாகப் பறக்கப் பறக்க நம்ப முடியாத பலவற்றைக் காணலாம்.நிஜமாகவே ஏராளமான உயிரினங்கள் விண்வெளியில் உள்ளன!”  

இது பற்றி அவர் என்ன நினைக்கிறார் என்று அவரைக் கேட்ட போது அவர், “உயிருள்ள பல உயிரினங்கள் பெரும் நாகரிகம் போல வளர்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளன. 1000 லட்சம் ஆண்டுகளாக அவை அங்குள்ளன. அவை எவ்வளவு முன்னேற்றமடைந்த ஜந்துக்கள் என்பதையோ அவை அங்கு என்ன செய்கின்றன எனபதையோ நம்மால் கணிக்கவே முடியாது. ஆகவே தான் அவற்றுடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ள நான் முயற்சிக்கிறேன். என்னை ஒரு கிறுக்கு என்று நினைக்கலாம். அவற்றிடம் என்னிடம் வாருங்கள் என நான் அழைக்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

இவர் மட்டுமல்ல, இன்னும் பல விண்வெளி வீரர்களும் இப்படி விண்வெளியில் தாங்கள் கண்ட பல அற்புத பறக்கும் பொருள்கள் பற்றிக் கூறி உலக மக்களை வியப்படைய வைக்கின்றனர்!

C R W Nevinson, English painter, tells one of the finest of all sick bed stories:

Then came pleurisy, culminating in pneumonia that nearly ended my life. The telephone was at by bed side, and in order that I should not be disturbed we were supposed to be cut off from all incoming calls. One night, however, when the night nurse had gone out of the room the bell rang. Instinctively I reached out my hand.

“Yes”, I quavered.

“Daily Blank speaking”, announced a very cockney voice. “Is he gone yet?”

It hurt me to laugh and I maintained my gravity by thinking they should not have left it to the office boy.

“No, I said, He is still with us”.

I then said that the patient had expressed a desire that certain matters to be remembered in his obituary notice, and I dictated a paragraph which the voice assured me it had taken down. I wished him good bye.

“Good bye ,said the voice. An’ if h’ goes within the next hour give’s a scoop will yer?”

I promised to do my best  in difficult circumstances and rang off.

The steward attempted to encourage the suffering passenger.

“Don’t be downhearted, nobody’s ever died of seasickness”.

“Oh, moaned the sufferer , how can you be so cruel? Only the hope of death has kept me alive so far.”

Could there be anything worse, an ailing friend once wrote complyingly to mark twain, than having a tooth ache and an earache at the same time?

“Rheumatism and St.Vitus Dance”.

Looking down at the sick man, the doctor decided to tell him the truth.

“I feel that I should tell you. You are a very sick man. I am sure you would want to know the facts. Now—is there anyone you would like to see?”

Bending down towards his patient, the doctor heard him feebly answer, “Yes”.

“Who is it?”

In a slightly stronger tone the sufferer said,

“another Doctor.”

ஆல் இந்தியா ரேடியோ, சென்னை வானொலி நிலையத்தின் வாயிலாக தினமும் இந்திய நேரம் காலை 6.55 மணிக்குச் சுற்றுப்புறச் சூழல் நிகழ்ச்சியில் 1-8-19 முதல் 10-8-19 முடிய சுற்றுப்புறச் சூழலைக் காப்பது பற்றிய ச.நாகராஜனின் 10 உரைகள் ஒலிபரப்பப்படுகின்றன. இந்த உரைகளை     www.allindiaradio.gov.in  தளத்தில் தமிழ் ஒலிபரப்பைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து  நிகழ்நிலையில் கேட்கலாம்.   7-8-19 அன்று காலை ஒலிபரப்பட்ட ஏழாம் உரை இங்கு தரப்படுகிறது.

அரிய உயிரின வகை வேறுபாட்டைக் காப்போம்!

இயற்கையின் ஒரு அற்புதமான அமைப்பே பயோ டைவர்ஸிடி (Bio diversity) எனப்படும் உயிரினவகை வேறுபாடாகும்.

ஆனால் அற்புதமான இந்த அமைப்பு மனிதர்களால் சிறுகச் சிறுக அழிக்கப்பட்டு வருவது வேதனைக்குரிய ஒன்றாகும்.

 மிக அதிகமாக உலகெங்கும் பெருகி வரும் ஜனத்தொகை, உலகப் பொருளாதாரம், மக்களின் நுகர்வு ஆகியவற்றால் கடந்த 50 ஆண்டுகளாக பூமியின் உயிர்க்கூறான அமைப்பு சிதைந்து வருகிறது.

ஒருபுறம் மக்களின் ஆயுட்காலம் பழைய காலத்தை விட அதிகமாகி இருக்கிறது என்பதும், மத்தியதர வர்க்கத்தினரின் வாழ்க்கை நிலை சிறப்பாக மேம்பட்டு வருகிறது என்பதும் மகிழ்ச்சிக்குரிய விஷயமாக இருந்த போதிலும் இவை உயிரினவகை வேறுபாட்டுக்கு ஊறு செய்தே அடையப்படுகிறது என்பதையும் கருத்தில் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

1970ஆம் ஆண்டிலிருந்தே உயிரின வகை வேறுபாடு கீழ் நோக்கிப் போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பதே விஞ்ஞானிகளின் ஆய்வுகளின் முடிவாகும். இதை அவர்கள் Great Acceleration – க்ரேட் ஆக்ஸிலரேஷன் – பெரும் முடுக்கம் என்று வர்ணிக்கின்றனர்.

பறவைகள், விலங்கினங்கள் மற்றும் மீன் உள்ளிட்ட கடல் வாழ் உயிரினங்கள் ஆகியவற்றின் எண்ணிக்கை குறைந்து கொண்டே வருகிறது.

விலங்குகள் இயற்கையாக உயிர் வாழும் இடம் குறைந்து கொண்டே வருவது, உயிரினங்களை வேட்டையாடுவது ஆகியவையே இந்த எண்ணிக்கை குறைபாட்டிற்கான பிரதான காரணங்களாகும்.

பூமியின் ஆரோக்கியமும் சமச்சீர்தன்மையும் இந்த பல்வேறு உயிரினங்களைச் சார்ந்தே இருக்கிறது என்பது ஒரு முக்கிய செய்தி.

750 கோடி ஜனத்தொகையைக் கொண்டுள்ள உலகம் 980 கோடி என்ற அளவில் ஜனத்தொகைப் பெருக்கத்தை 2050ஆம் ஆண்டு வாக்கில் எட்டி விடும் என்கிறது அறிவியல் ஆய்வு.

பூமியில் 30 விழுக்காட்டுப் பரப்பளவே காடுகள் உள்ளன. ஆனால் இந்தக் காடுகளிலேயே பூமியில் உயிர் வாழும் பல்வேறு உயிரினங்களில் 80 விழுக்காடு வாழ்கின்றன. பூமியின் ஜனத்தொகைப் பெருக்கத்தினால் 2000ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் 2010க்குள் 40 சதவிகிதம் காடுகள் அழிக்கப்பட்டு விளை நிலங்களாக மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதனால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவை பல்வேறு வகை உயிரினங்களே!

ஆக தன்னுடன் சேர்ந்து வாழும் உயிரின வகைகளை அழிக்காமலும் அவை வசிக்கும் காடுகளை அழிக்காமலும் இருக்க வேண்டிய பெரும் பொறுப்பு மனித குலத்தைச் சார்ந்திருக்கிறது. இதைக் கருத்திக் கொண்டு பயோ டைவர்ஸிடி எனப்படும் உயிரின வகை வேறுபாட்டை இயற்கை அமைத்தபடியே அப்படியே காக்க உறுதி பூணுவோம். –subham–

Nehru Centre, Bombay has published a source book of astronomy. It is an encyclopaedia of Sanskrit works on astronomy. The beauty of the book is that original slokas or hymns are given in Devanagari lipi with English translation from Vedic days until 19th century. It covers only important quotations.

At the end of the book there is a valuable list of about 150 Hindu astronomers and the names of their 300 original works. Some are just quotes from other commentators. Some are details of whole books. It will be a ready reference for research scholars. I publish the informative list below.

This illustrates another important point. From 1140 BCE until a few hundred years ago Sanskrit was the only language that had continuous production of astronomy books. If you take another ancient language Tamil, we have no ancient astronomy book. We have only astronomical references and not whole books. This shows that Sanskrit was never a dead language and it was always used by scholars. About 30 years ago Kanchi Paramacharya Swamikal (1894-1994) composed a Sanskrit poem and it reverberated throughout the world from the United nations Hall through the most famous Carnatic singer MS Subbalakshmi. This list is another proof for the scientific use of Sanskrit language until modern days.

LONDON SAW A VERY STRANGE SCENE TODAY (11-08-2019). SRI LANKAN HINDU DEVOTEES ROLLED ON THE ROADS TO FULFILL THEIR VOWS, AS PART OF RATH YATRA.

Kanaga Durga Temple in Ealing, London, celebrated its Annual Chariot festival also known as Car Festival and Rath Yatra. Ealing in London became another Jaffna (Sri Lanka) today. Sri Lankan Hindus showed that they are  second to none in following Hindu rituals. I have seen many Rath Yatras in London and Tamil Nadu (India). But today’s one was unique.

The unusual scene today was the rolling of scores of Hindu Tamil devotees on the ground, literally on the roads. Hindus take vow and do several strange rites to fulfil their vows. Fire Walking, Carrying Fire Pots in hands or heads, Carrying Milk Pots or Pots with young /germinating plants on their heads, rolling on the left over food leaves/plates and rolling on the ground etc.

The meaning behind all these rituals is thanks giving to the god for fulfilling their wishes. Several people do it with newer demands as well; “Lt me get married soon; let me get a good wife or husband, let me pass in the exams, let my troubles be over, let me get a child, let me get good health or wealth” are some appeals. Several mothers do it for their children. That is why Manu and other Law makers made Mother superior to God in Hinduism.

Today I saw scores of people rolling on the hot, rough roads following the Ratha/ chariot of Goddess Durga. Kanaga Durga (Golden Goddess of Protection) is a famous temple in London. Every year the Rath Yatra is held.

Hindus believe that the dust of the devotees is more powerful in healing than the Prasad of Gods. So they roll on the ground where the Bhaktas/devotees and Gods walked. That is why they came at the far end of the procession.

The whole of Jaffna descended upon Ealing area of London this morning giving colourful scenes. Hundreds of young volunteers led the procession peacefully for four hours. Several thousands attended and had free food. They waited patiently with  young children with smiling faces to get the Darshan (viewing of the Goddess) and the Maha Prasad (sumptuous food).

Another beautiful scene is the Kavadi Dance (Kanwaria in North India). They take the semi circular, decorated wooden arch on their shoulders and dance and chant the names of Gods. Kavadi carriers put hooks behind their backs or insert sharp spade shaped Vel in their mouths to show their intensity of devotion; another interpretation is that by punishing themselves like this they atone for their sins.

Hundreds of women carried the Milk Pots on their heads. These are the things that give them great mental strength. These serve as shock absorbers and tackle all sorts of family problems.

Sri Lankan mothers brought their children in large numbers. It is not only fun for the children but also memorable events in their life. Todays’ mothers and fathers were trained on the job (of understanding Hinduism) by their parents in the same way.

Hinduism is unique in the world with hundreds of colourful rituals and foods. The more they celebrate such festivals the more faith they get. Their faith gets more deep rooted.

In addition to Rolling men, Milk Pots, Fire Pots, Kavadis there were music troupes playing on traditional pipes and drums. Three Rathas/ chariots took nearly four hours to reach the destination and people walked all through the route. They broke thousands of coconuts and offered them to Goddess Durga along the route.
