Courtesan/ prostitute / para stree= paraththai in Tamilization………. is chased.

Then she retorts;

There is a beautiful quotation given by the poet, where he says,

NEVER EVER SCHOLD THE CHASTE WOMEN WHOSE VERY THOUGHT WILL CURE ALL TYPES OF SINS—paripatal verse 20

THIS IS THE BASIS OF HINDU SLOKA IN   PRATASMARAN (Morning Thoughts)  IN SANSKRIT.

Hindu women recite every day in the morning (Prata= Morning)

Ahalyā Draupadī Kuntī Tārā Mandodarī tathā
Pañcakanyāḥ smarennityaṃ mahāpātakanāśinīḥ

अहल्या द्रौपदी कुन्ती तारा मन्दोदरी तथा ।
पञ्चकन्याः स्मरेन्नित्यं महापातकनाशिनीम् ॥

“Ahalya, Draupadi, Kunti, Tara, and Mandodari—one should remember these five ever-living maidens daily, as doing so destroys the greatest of sins.” (A variant of the verse sometimes replaces Kunti with Sita)

Paripatal verse 20 is sung by Nalanthuvanar, who is praised by Maruthan Ilanagan of Purananuru. So, it is not a later addition.

Mirror Scene from Tirupparamkundram near Madurai

In Paripatal verse 21 on Lord Skanda/ Muruga,  beauty of several (drunken) women was described and compared to paintings. So once again we are reminded of the paintings of beautiful women in Sangam age. One man was enjoying the dance of a beautiful dancer. Immediately his wife was furious; this shows the psychology of Tamil women; they were very jealous and possessive. Another woman looked at the mirror and adjusted her ornaments to look showier. Here we come across the Tamil word for mirror-

NIZAL KAAN MANDILAM = round shaped object that reflects.

Andal in Tiruppavai used another word for mirror- THATTOLI= plate that reflects light.

Another woman was applying paste on her breasts again and again and wiping it , probably to get attention.

May be a case of ADHD.

Paripatal verse 22 on river Vaigai is the last verse available. We lost about 48 verses .

Here again the water sports are described.

There is a long metaphor—

Rain= Pandian invasion;

Clouds= row of war elephants;

Thunder = war cries;

Lightning= shiny spears;

Poring raindrops = arrows;

Raining= generosity;

Floods= increasing battalions;

There is a beautiful quotation,

Poet is wondering whether the river decorated the women

Or the women decorated the Vaigai river; who beautified who?

(Beautify is a verb that means to make something or someone more attractive, pretty, or pleasing to look at. It involves improving an existing appearance by adding nice details, cleaning up, or decorating).

Orchestra Vs Nature

Another interesting description is the competition between human orchestra and Nature orchestra:

The poet says,

Competing with the drummers, the thunder roared;

Competing with the lute player, the bees and beetles buzzed and hummed;

Competing with the flutists, dragon flies made buzzing sound;

Competing with the dancing women, wind made the creepers dancing!

Nature orchestra is in many other Sangam poems too.

Echoes of Bhagavad Gita

To Tirumal (Vishnu):

தீயினுள் தெறல் நீ;
பூவினுள் நாற்றம் நீ;
கல்லினுள் மணியும் நீ;
சொல்லினுள் வாய்மை நீ;
அறத்தினுள் அன்பு நீ;
மறத்தினுள் மைந்து நீ;
வேதத்து மறை நீ;
பூதத்து முதலும் நீ;
வெஞ் சுடர் ஒளியும் நீ;
திங்களுள் அளியும் நீ;
அனைத்தும் நீ;
அனைத்தின் உட்பொருளும் நீ;

Translation:

In fire, you are the heat;
in blossoms, the fragrance;
among the stones, you are the diamond;
in speech, truth;
among virtues, you are love;
in valour—strength;
in the Veda, you are the secret;
among elements, the primordial;
in the burning sun, the light;
in moonshine, its sweetness;
you are all,
and you are the substance and meaning of all.

This is similar to the Vibhuti Yoga of Bhagavad Gita

Vibhuti Yoga is Chapter 10 of the Bhagavad Gita. It is the “Yoga of Divine Manifestations” or “Opulence of the Absolute”. Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna how His infinite splendour, power, and glory shine through the greatest, most excellent things and beings in the universe.
