Points to Ponder
Hindus were the only people who devised rules for Spies, Ambassadors, Royal symbols like Flags, Umbrellas, drums, Division of Army into Four sections, Division of seasons into Six etc. All these are in earliest Sanskrit works and Tamils being pukka Hindus, used them as such.
Spying is dealt with in detail by Chanakya (Kautilya) in Arthashastra. Even H A Popley mentioned it in his Tirukkural Book in 1931.
Ascetics as Spies is interesting! I always suspect foreign devotees in Many ashrams! Hindus must be vigilant. Even Kumarila Bhatta spied on Buddhists disguised as a Buddha Bhikshu. When Adi Sankara came to meet him, he was in the middle of slowly burning husk mountain and directed him to Mandana Mishra. It is said that he self -immolated himself to atone for the sin of not observing the Vedic Sathya/Truth!
