Following is the extract from the book “India Revisited” by Edwin Arnold published in 1886.

“It is a mistake to think that the snakes are always harmless which are brought round to house doors and hotels in India by jugglers and samp-walahs. An almost universal opinion exists that these men extract the poison –fangs (teeth) from the serpents kept in their baskets and that anybody, therefore, may approach and play with them as freely as their exhibitors. This is by no means the case. Many of the reptiles which hiss and coil about in the Indian verandahs are as deadly as any to be found in the jungle.

The conjuring people tame and familiarise their snakes, especially the cobras, which are then disinclined to strike and become quite friendly and playful; so that unless suddenly frightened or irritated, they dart at the hand of the snake charmer without erecting the poison fangs or even opening their mouths.

Hindu Tricks by Palace jugglers!

The Maharajah of Benares was kind enough to send the entire company of his jugglers for our entertainment. They performed with much adroitness the usual series of Hindu tricks. They made the mango tree grow and bear ripe fruit from a deed; swallowed fire and swords; disentangled inextricable knots; and, having mixed together in water and drunk up three powders, red, green and yellow, one of them brought what seemed the same powders from his mouth in a dry state again. Then they produced a large selection of snakes, of which three are cobras, and one of these was made to dance to the gourd and bansula, striking again and again meanwhile at the hand of the performer.

Poisonous Snake!

A doubt being expressed by somebody as to the lethal power of this creature, the chief juggler declared that it was truly a dant-wallah, and had his poison teeth. “If the sahib-lok would supply a sheep or goat, they might quickly see whether I spoke a true word.” Eventually a white chicken was produced and seizing his cobra by the neck, the juggler pinched its tail and made it bite the poor fowl, which uttered a little cry when the sharp tooth punctured its thigh. The chicken was dead in another ten minutes.

At Pahalpur, a snake charmer for whom we sent to catch a serpent, said to be infesting the compound, had just died by a bite from one of his own captive snakes. The fact is snakes are not understood, and especially cobras. They are extremely intelligent, slow to anger, conscious of their terrible venom and loath to employ it. They are easily tamed, are anxious to escape notice, but extraordinarily sensible to kindness, and when not frightened are among the most gentle and attached of creatures. I shall print in this place an unpublished poem written by me some time ago, which illustrates the topic: THE SNAKE AND THE BABY.”

(Here he had given his long poem which ran to three pages)

Mother and Father

You must always remember the following five:-

Janani – Mother

Janmadaataa- Father

Vidyaadaataa – Teacher

Raastra – Motherland

Dharmopadestaa – Teacher of Dharma

Janani Janmadata ca suvidyam pradadati yah

Raastram Dharmopadestaa ca pancakam santatam smaret

To attain full Vedic Knowledge, remember the following five:

Gananaatha

Sarasvatii

Ravi

Sukra

Brhaspati

Gananaathasarasvatii ravisukrabrhaspatin

Pancaitani smarennityam vedavanipravruttaye

My comments: Gananatha stands for Siva and Ganesh. All the Vedic prayers start with a hymn on Ganesh: Gananam tva ganapathihum…………

Sarasvati- Goddess of Knowledge

Ravi is Sun, also the symbol for Veda Mata Gayatri.

Sukra (Venus) and Brhaspati (Jupiter) stand for the teachers of Demons and Angels/Devas respectively. Both of them are praised as Two Great Brahmins in Tamil and Sanskrit literature. They were the most famous teachers of ancient Hindu world.

If one remembers all the above five, they derive great inspiration to imbibe more.

My comments:

If you know the mythological stories of these people, then you will understand better the logic behind these five names.

1.Agastya was a short person who travelled from North India to South India at the request of Lord Siva to solve the problem of population explosion in the North. At that time South India was least populated. Moreover he was a great Hindu engineer who diverted the River Kaveri in to the plains of Tamil Nadu and laid a new road route to South India via Vindhya Mountains. He also crossed the Bay of Bengal n a naval expedition to South East Asia and established Hindu empire there. But all these facts are hidden in mythological stories (Please read my previous research papers).

agastyanepal-carole-r-bolon

At that time South India was infested with cannibals. One of the cannibals Ilvala killed lot of seers. He used to ‘cook’ his brother Vatapi and feed the seers. As soon as they ate ‘him’, he used to call his brother Vatapi to come out and he would do it by tearing open the  stomachs of the seers. Ilvala tried the same trick with Agastya. Knowing the cunningness of Ilvala, Agastya ‘ate’ Vatapi dish and said “Vatapi jeerno Bhava”, when Ilvala called him. But he died inside the stomach of Agastya when he said “Let Vatapi get digested” (vatapi jeerna bhava).

2.Kumbhakarana used to eat for six months and sleep for the next six months. He was the brother of Ravana, the king and demon of Sri Lanka. Though he was a great eater, he got everything digested. If someone sleeps peacefully like Kumbha karna after a big meal, food will get easily digested. We don’t need to sleep for six months like him. You need a good, long and sound sleep for good digestion.

3.Vadavanala is the submarine fire in Hindu mythology. During volcanic eruptions under the ocean, it comes out and make Tsunamis to happen. Tsunamis create mysterious fires and devour lands and other objects on its way. If one could remember it, he would get the confidence of digesting anything.

4.Vrkodara alias Bheema was one of the five Pandava brothers. Bheema would consume anything that comes his way. When a demon called Bakasura who killed villagers, Bheema went all alone, ate the carts load of food sent for him and killed the demon Bakasura as well. So he stands for good appetites, great food and easy digestion.

5.Sani graha, planet Saturn, is in charge of longevity, disease and death in Hindu astrology. He is in charge of large intestines and feet. Apart from this, my friend and priest Sri M N Kalyanasundaram of Trichy, living in London, gave me a reasonable explanation to link Sani/Saturn with digestion. According to our Hindu astrology, Sani/Saturn governs the metal IRON. And in our blood vessels, the most important metal is iron. If haemoglobin is less, all problems crop up. So doctors first check our iron (haemoglobin) level as soon as we go into the clinic with some complaints. That way Sani is connected with blood and digestion.

So if one wishes that he or she should live for long without any disease, one should know digestion and absorption are essential. Remember the above five great personalities who got digested anything in their way!

We know people who eat some tablets for digestion after dinner. But if they give some positive thoughts about the five characters mentioned here, it will improve their digestion. It is more of a psychological treatment rather than a physical treatment.

the-truth-about-socialism

1.Woman’s Suffrage

One evening when Lloyd George was addressing a meeting of hostile suffragettes, one woman, in an ugly mood, rose and said, if you were my husband I would give you poison.”

Lloyd George known for his ready wit, snapped back,

“My dear lady, if I were your husband I would take the poison.

2.Dog and Perfume

The story is told of an ingenious young man who desired to present his sweet heart with a gift. He decided that perfume would be appropriate, but he did not know the name of the brand she used, and was too shy to ask her. He solved the problem by taking her little pet dog for a walk. Snatching the animal into a store , he proceeded to instruct the astonished clerk to wave the stoppers of a large number  of perfumes under the nose of the rather indifferent dog. At last came a perfume which caused the animal to jump up excitedly and wag its tail. On this evidence he bought his gift which turned out to be right.

3.How to bargain?

It happened on one of those downtown Manhattan streets where the cloak and suitors rush out and seize the passerby by the arm. Look, said one of them eagerly to the man he seized

A fine suit, the best, nice cut, fine quality materials. To you fifteen dollars.

No, said the customer trying to break from him .

Look said the clothier dragging his victim a little closer to the shop, a special cut , with cuffs even ; the last suit. To you a special 12 dollars.

“No”, said the man trying to pull free.

An opportunity that that shouldn’t be passed up, continued the salesman, look because it is early, to start the day right the first sale 8 dollars.

“Nothing doing”, snarled the customer.

“My god”, wailed the proprietor, throwing his hands up into the air, such a person. “To make the thing right,to start the day. I started some I should finish it. I am giving it to you for nothing”.

“Not without two pairs of pants!”, said the customer

Destiny has 4 feet, 8 hands and 16 eyes; how then shall the ill doer with only two of each hope to escape? –Chinese proverb

No flying from fate

Flee never so fast you cannot flee your fortune

Do what you ought, and come what can

What must be, must be (che sara, sara in French)

Fate leads the willing, but drives the stubborn

He that is born to be hanged, shall never be drowned

Every bullet has its billet.

A man’s destiny is always dark (meaning: nobody knows what fate has in store for him).

She is an old wife that wats (knows) her weird (fortune).

Tamil Views on Fate (From Tirukkural of Tiruvalluvar)

371.He who is destined to prosper is industrious. Adversity betakes one who is indolent.

372.An adverse destiny blunts a man’s intelligence and makes him lose his wealth.

373.Although one may acquire profound knowledge by study, one’s innate tendencies will preponderate.

374.It is one thing to be wealthy, but to attain wisdom is quite another. This is the two fold nature of this world.

375.Thorough the influence of fate all good means of acquiring wealth may prove disastrous, and all foul means prove helpful

376.Whatever one is not destined to possess would be lost however hard one may safeguard it.

377.Even to those who have acquired immense wealth the enjoyment of it may not be possible except as ordained by the Disposer (God) of all things.

378.The poor who have nothing to enjoy would renounce the world if their destiny were to cease to torment them.

379.A man would accept and enjoy the good things of this world vouchsafed  to him y his destiny; why then should he feel disturbed when misfortune befalls him?

380.What is there more potent than fate? It forestalls every expedient one may resort to for averting it.

Some of Bharati’s friends were discussing about some mistakes in Bharatis poems and they argued that he did not follow the rules of prosody. Somehow Bharati came to know about this gossip. Immediately he called them and asked which came first Tamil or Grammar. They were unanimous in saying that Tamil came first and then the grammar came.

Bharati said, “Good. That is right. Please allow the Tamil language to go in its own way. Le the grammar follow the langage”. All of them kept quiet and left the place. Grammar is to show the structure of a language and guide it. But it should never devour the language is the view of Bharati according to Akkur Ananthachary who narrate this anecdote in Tamil ( from the 1936 publication of A.A. ‘Bharati’s Life history’).

Following is the view of R Srinivasan, given in his book, Facets of Indian culture):–

Grammar can never produce good literature; rather, it may hamper it. Language is more fundamental, it is a living aspect of human intercourse; grammar is only a code, a record of certain standard forms adopted by great literary geniuses. A poet does not care a straw for our grammar, grammar may stifle a poet, and he rebels and breaks thorough the prison house of grammar into spacious realms of poetic fantasies, untrammelled by any conventional fetters.

Adi Shankara on Sanskrit Grammar

Great philosopher Adi Shankara also mocks at Sanskrit grammarians who involves them in heated discussions wasting their time. In his Bhaja Govindam, he says in the very first verse:-

Adore the Lord, Adore the Lord, Adore the Lord,

O fool! When the appointed time for departure comes, the repetition of grammatical rules will not, indeed, save you.

Gandhi-Stamps

Picture: Gandhi stamps from foreign countries

‘Razed to the ground’ –

(குறிப்பு: நிர்மல் குமார் போஸ் எழுதிய Report for fact : A personal account என்ற கட்டுரையை ஆதாரமாகக் கொண்டு எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.Univiersity of Mysore 1969ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளியிட்ட ”Gandhi and the West “ என்ற நூலின் முதல் கட்டுரை இது.)
