HELL GATE

Marse Henry Watterson used to tell with pleasure of his favourite typographic al boner (Stupid Mistake= Boner) in newspapers. It happened that a New York newspaper transposed, one day, the headings of its obituary column and the marine and shipping news which has chanced to fall on the same page. As a result a number of respected and diseased citizens were listed under the disconcerting heading, “Passed through the Hell Gate today”.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

When Julia Ward Howe died, memorial services were held at San Francisco. The local literary colony attended practically en masse to pay their tribute. The mayor was asked to preside. Advancing to the edge of the platform, he said, Your attendance here, ladies and gentlemen, in such great numbers, shows San Francisco s appreciation of good literature. This meeting is a great testimonial to the immortal author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin– the late Julia Ward Howard.

Mozart’s Massachusetts!

This was one of Cardinal Gibbbon’s jokes

Patrick Gilmore,  the bandmaster, famous for his rendition of Mozarts Twelfth Mass, once presented his favourite number in a small North Carolina town. The reporter of the one newspaper in the town, who was assigned to “cover ” the performance evidently thought that the occasion was that one called upon him to avoid any undignified abbreviation s in his write up of the concert. He began with this statement

Gilmore’s band rendered with great effect Mozart’s Twelfth Massachusetts .

BEETHOVEN DE’COMPOSING’

A young lady, who had recently acquired a large fortune, invited Paderewski to give a private concert at her home. Her knowledge of music was by no means as large as her newly found wealth.

Commenting on one of his selection s, she exclaimed, What a beautiful piece. Who composed it?

Beethoven, madam, was the reply.

Ah, yes, she said knowingly, ‘and is he composing now?

No, replied Paderewski gravely, he is decomposing.

வேத சம்ஹிதைகளை அடுத்து எழுந்த பிராமணங்கள் என்னும் உரைநடை நூல்களில் நிறைய தத்துவக் கதைகள் உள்ளன. சில நேரடியாகவும், சில மறைமுகமாகவும் நமக்குப் பல நீதிகளை உணர்த்துவன. தமிழ், கிரேக்கம், லத்தீன் முதலிய பல மொழிகளில் நூல்கள் தோன்றுவதற்கு மிக, மிக, மிக முன்னதாக சம்ஸ்கிருதத்தில் தோன்றிய உரைநடை நூல்கள் இவை.

ஒரு குட்டிக் கதையைப் பார்ப்போம்.

 

தேவர்கள், மனிதர்கள், பித்ருக்கள் (இறந்துபோன முன்னோர்கள்), அசுரர்கள் ஆகிய அனைவரும் பிரஜாபதியிடம் (பிரம்மா) சென்றனர். “ஐயன்மீர்! நாங்கள் எப்படி வாழ்வேண்டும் என்று அறிவுறுத்தவும்” என்றனர். ஒருவர் பின்னர் ஒருவராக வரிசையாகச் சென்று வினவினர். அவரும் செப்பினார்  :

 

ஆடை அணிந்து வளைந்து நெளிந்து கூனிக் குறுகிய மனிதனே! நீ காலையிலும், மாலையிலும் உண்க.

 

தேவர்களே! யாகத்தில் கிடைக்கும் உணவை மட்டும் உண்க

 

பித்ருக்களே! மாதம் தோறும் ஒரு முறை நிலவு ஒளியில் உண்க

 

மிருகங்களோவெனில் நினனைத்தபோது, கண்டவை எல்லாவற்றையும் உண்ணலாம்.

 

அசுரர்களுக்கு இருட்டையும் மாயையையும் பிரம்மா கொடுத்தார்.

( கண்ட கண்ட நேரங்களில் கண்ட கண்ட வற்றை உண்பவன் மிருகம் என்பது சொல்லாமலே விளங்கும்; மாயையிலும் இருட்டிலும் மூழ்கிக் கிடப்பவர், இனம் புரியாத வஸ்துக்களை உண்பர்; தற்கால குடிகாரர்கள்; போதை மருந்துக்கு அடிமையானோரை ஒப்பிடலாம்;அல்லது பல்லி,தேள், பாம்பு போன்றவற்றை உண்ணும் வர்கத்தை கணக்கில் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம் என்பது என் கருத்து).

மனிதராயினும், தேவராயினும், மிருகமாயினும் — எவரும் இக்கட்டளைகளை மீறக்கூடாது. சில மனிதர்கள் இதை மீறி உண்கிறார்கள்; அவர்கள் அதர்ம வழிகளில் கொழுத்துப் போகிறார்கள். கொழுப்பு என்பது தவற்றினால் வருகிறது. ஆகையால் மனிதர்கள் காலையிலும் மாலையிலும் சாப்பிட வேண்டும்; எவர் ஒருவர் இந்த உண்மையை அறிகிறாரோ, அறிந்தபடி பின்பற்றுகிறாரோ, அவர் முழு வாழ் நாளும் வாழ்வார். அவர் பேசுவதெல்லாம் உண்மையாகிவிடும்;  ஏனெனில் இது தெய்வீக உண்மை– சதபத பிராமணம் 2-4-2-6

 

நீதி வெண்பாவில் வரும் தமிழ் பாட்டு ஒன்று கூறுகிறது:

“ ஒருபோது யோகியே ஒண்டளிர்க்கை மாதே!

இருபோது போகியே யென்ப—திரிபோது

ரோகியே நான்குபோ துண்பா னுடல் விட்டுப்

போகியே யென்று புகல் உண்பான் ”

 

 

(ஒருவேளை உண்பான் யோகி, இருவேளை உண்பான் போகி
மூவேளை உண்பான் ரோகி  நான்குவேளை உண்பான் போகியே போகி (ஆள் அவுட்!) என்பது இதன் பொருள்).

இன்னும் ஒரு குட்டிக்கதை

 

மாதங்கள் ஏன் தெரியுமா ஒன்றை அடுத்து ஒன்றாக , வரிசையாக வருகின்றன? ஏனெனில் பிராமண/ புரோகிதர்கள் ஒருவர் பின் ஒருவராக வரிசையாக வருகின்றனர். அவர்கள் ஒழுங்காக வருகின்றனர்; ஒழுங்காக உள்ளே நுழைகின்றன்ர்; இதனால் மாதங்களும் இப்படி வரும்; ஆகவே ஒருவர் பின்னால் ஒருவர் செல்க; காலடிச் சுவட்டைப் பின்பற்றுக- 3-1-7-11

 

இந்த மந்திரம் ஒழுங்கையும், வரிசைக் கிரமத்தையும் கற்பிக்கும் மந்திரம் என்று எனக்குத் தோன்றுகிறது. இவை எல்லாம் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகளாக நிலைத்து நிற்கும் அற்புதமான பொன்மொழிகள்!.

The Life and Letters of Friedrich Max Muller – First Published in 1903 (London and New York; Reprint in USA

1903ஆம் ஆண்டு ‘தி லைஃப் அண்ட் லெட்டர்ஸ் ஆஃப் ஃப்ரெடிரிக் மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் என்ற நூலிலிருந்து எடுத்துத் தரப்படும் கடிதங்களையே இங்கு நீங்கள் படித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்.

அடுத்து அவர் செவாலியர் புன்சென்னுக்கு 1856ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட மாதம் 25ஆம் தேதி எழுதிய கடிதத்தில் புனிதர் பால்  வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் இருந்த கிரேக்கம் மற்றும் ரோமை விட இந்தியா கிறிஸ்தவ மயமாக நன்கு காலம் கனிந்திருக்கிறது என்று எழுதுகிறார்.

இந்தப் புனித காரியத்திற்காக நான் எனது வாழ்வையே அர்ப்பணிப்பேன் என்று சூளுரை புகல்கிறார். 1856இல் இந்தக் கடிதத்தை அவர் எழுதும் போது அவர் வயது 33.

கடிதத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியை கீழே காணலாம்:

TO CHEVALIER BUNSEN 55, ST. JOHN STREET, OXFORD, AUGUST25, 1856.

 “India is much riper for Christianity than Rome or Greece were at the time of St. Paul. The rotten tree has for some time had artificial supports… For the good of this struggle I should like to lay down my life, or at least to lend my hand to bring about this struggle. Dhulip Singh is much at Court, and is evidently destined to play a political part in India.”

இதற்கு ஒரு ஆண்டிற்கு முன்னர் புன்சென் மாக்ஸ் முல்லரை அவரது மத சம்பந்தமான கட்டுரை பற்றி வெகுவாகப் புகழ்கிறார். அவர் ராஜதந்திரியாக சேவை ஆற்ற வேண்டியவர் என்று அவர் கூறுவதன் உள்ளர்த்தத்தை நன்கு புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும்.

கடிதத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியைக் கீழே காணலாம்:

 On April 17, 1855, Bunsen wrote to thank Max Müller for an article on his
Outlines.

“You have so thoroughly adopted the English disguise that it will not be easy for any one to suspect you of having written this ‘curious article.’ It especially delights me to see how ingeniously you contrive to say what you announce you do not wish to discuss, i.e. the purport of the theology. In short, we are all of opinion that your cousin was right when she said of you in Paris to Neukomm, that you ought to be in the diplomatic service!”

1868, டிசம்பர் 16ஆம் தேதி அவர் ட்யூக் ஆஃப் ஆர்ஜில்-க்கு எழுதிய கடிதத்தில் அவர் கூறுவது:

இந்தியா ஒரு  முறை ஏற்கனவே ஜெயிக்கப்பட்டது. அது இரண்டாம் முறையாக ஜெயிக்கப்பட வேண்டும். இந்த இரண்டாவது வெற்றி கல்வி மூலமாக ஏற்பட வேண்டும். கல்வி பற்றி ஏராளமாகச் செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் நிதி உதவியானது மூன்று மடங்காகவோ அல்லது நான்கு மடங்காகவோ அது போதுமானதாக இருக்கும். … மேலை நாட்டுக் கருத்துக்கல் தோய்ந்த ஆனால் உள்ளூர் மண்வாசமும் குணாதிசயமும் அப்படியே இருக்கும்படியாக உள்ள ஒரு புது தேசீய இலக்கியம் எழும். ஒரு புது தேசீய இலக்கியம் ஒரு புது தேசீய வாழ்க்கையைத் தன்னுடன் கொண்டு வரும். ஒரு புதிய நல்லொழுக்க சக்தியும் வரும். மதம் என்று எடுத்துக் கொண்டால், அது தன்னைத் தானே பார்த்துக் கொள்ளும். மிஷனரிகள் தாங்கள் என்ன செய்தோம் என்பதை உணர்ந்ததற்கும் அதிகமாக செய்திருக்கின்றனர்.”

இந்தியாவின் புராதன மதம் அழிந்து விட்டது. இப்போது கிறிஸ்தவம் உள்ளே நுழையா விட்டால் அது யாருடைய தவறு?”

இந்தக் கடிதத்தை அவர் எழுதும் போது அவருக்கு வயது 45.

TO THE DUKE OF ARGYLL. OXFORD, December 16, 1868.

“India has been conquered once, but India must be conquered again, and that second conquest should be a conquest by education. Much has been done for education of late, but if the funds were tripled and quadrupled, that would hardly be enough… A new national literature may spring up, impregnated with western ideas, yet retaining its native spirit and character… A new national literature will bring with it a new national life, and new moral vigour. As to religion, that will take care of itself. The missionaries have done far more than they themselves seem to be aware of.”

“The ancient religion of India is doomed, and if Christianity does not step in, whose fault will it be?”

இந்தக் கடிதங்களிலிருந்து இளைஞரான மாக்ஸ் முல்லரின் தெளிவான ஒரே நோக்கம் “உயிரைக் கொடுத்தாவது” இந்தியாவில் கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்தை ஸ்தாபிக்க வேண்டும்; ஹிந்து மதம் அழிந்து படும்” என்பது தெளிவாகத் தெரிகிறது. 22 வயதிலிருந்து 45 வயது வரையிலான அவரது நோக்கம், ஆசை, பணி ஆகியவற்றை மேற்கூறிய கடிதங்களிலிருந்து தெளிவாகத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளலாம்.

Cockroach on your time!

While shown the sights of Chicago by the Mayor of that city, M Cambon, the French ambassador of another generation, expressed his thanks for the Mayor s kindness.

But, he added, “I am sorry so to cockroach on your time”.

“Oh ,answered the Mayor, don’t think of that. But you don’t mean cockroach M.Cambon; it is ‘encroach’, you mean” .

“Oh, is it? I see a difference in gender”.

Oath and Bath!

As is usual, during public events of any kind, the newspapers hurriedly set up their front pages to describe the inauguration of Theodore Roosevelt .

The evidence of this haste was shown by a New York newspaper which described the event as follows,

I”t was a scene never to be forgotten when Roosevelt before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a few witnesses, took his simple bath”.

Cold and Coed!

Every newspaper makes its more or less amusing or more or less disastrous typographical errors in headlines or stories. Usually, when this occur, they must be corrected, if caught, in subsequent editions. It is said recently one of the most important newspapers in Washington reported on its front page a mild a disposition of President Roosevelt with the headline

President kept to Rooms by Coed.

Most of the run had been printed and had to be destroyed.

The President, however, heard of the matter and procured from the paper in question several copies to distribute to his friends.

President’s French!

Benjamin Franklin, being present at the meeting of some literary society in Paris where many pieces were read, and not well understanding the French when declaimed, but wishing to appear polite , resolved to applaud when he should see a lady of his acquaintance, Mme d. Bouffiers, express satisfaction.  After the reading was over, his little boy said to him, But, Grandpa, you always applauded, and louder than anybody else, when they were praising you.

வேதங்களின் துதிப்பாடல்களை அடுத்துத் தோன்றியவை பிராமணங்கள் என்னும் உரைநடை நூல்கள். கிரேக்கர்கள் புத்தகம் எழுதுவதற்கு முன்னரே தோன்றியவை இவை. எல்லாக் கதைகளும் உரையாடல்களும், சங்கேத மொழியில் எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கும். மொழி, சொல் பற்றி 3000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னரே எழுதினார்கள் என்றால், இவர்கள் எவ்வளவு நாகரீக முதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தார்கள் என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம்.

 

யார் பெரியவர்? யார் சிறந்தவர் என்று மனதுக்கும் வாக்கிற்கும் (வாக்= சொல்) வாக்குவாதம் ஏற்பாட்டது. நானே சிறந்தவன் என்று இரண்டும் கூறின.

மனம் சொன்னது: ஏ, சொல்லே, நான் நினைப்பதைத்தானே நீ பேசுகிறாய். நான் ஒரு விஷயத்தைப் புரிந்துகொண்ட பின்னர் தானே நீ அதைச் சொல்ல முடியும்; ஆகையால் நானே உன்னை விடச் சிறந்தவன்; உயர்ந்தவன் — என்றது.

 

வாக்கு சொல்லியது: நீ என்னதான் நினைத்தாலும் நான் சொன்னால்தானே மற்றவர்களுக்குத் தெரியும்; ஆகையால் தகவல் தரும் நானே உன்னைக் காட்டிலும் உயர்ந்தவன் என்றது.

 

 

இரண்டும் தொடர்ந்து வாதாடின; பின்னர் வா, நாம் பிரஜாபதியிடம் (பிரம்மா) முடிவு கேட்போம் என்று புறப்பட்டன. இரு தரப்பு வாதங்களையும் செவிமடுத்த பிரஜாபதி செப்பினார்: “மனதே பெரியவன்; நீ அது நினைப்பதைச் சொன்னாலும், அதைப்போல, அதைப் பின்பற்றி நடக்கிறாய் அல்லவா? ஆகையால்நீ இரண்டாம் தரம்தான்-

இப்படிப் பிரஜாபதி சொன்னவுடன் வாக்கிற்குக் கோபம் வந்தது. “அப்படியா சேதி! நீ என்னை நிராகரித்தாய் அல்லவா? உன்னையும் நான் நிராகரிப்பேன். எங்கு எங்கெல்லாம் யாக யக்ஞங்கள் மந்திரங்கள் உச்சரிக்கப்படுகின்றனவோ, அங்கெல்லாம் உன் பெயர் வரும்போது அவர்கள் உச்சரிக்காமல் போகட்டும் -உன் பெயர் என் சொல்லால் பிரகாசிக்கக்கூடாது” என்றது.

 

ஆகையால்தான் வேத மந்திர உச்சாடனத்தில் பிரஜாபதி பெயர் வருகையில் மெல்லிய- சன்னமான குரலில் மந்திரம் சொல்லுகின்றனர்.

 

இந்தக் கதையை ஆழ்ந்து யோசித்தால் நிறைய தத்துவங்கள் விளங்கும்.

 

ஒருவர் சொல்லும் சொல், தேன் போல இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் மனதில் விஷம் வைத்திருக்கலாம். ஆகவே மனதளவில் சுத்தம் வேண்டும்; ஆகையால் மனதே உயர்ந்தது.

 

ஒருவர் பலர் அறிய அழகாக மந்திரங்களைச் சொல்லலாம். ஆனால் அவர் மனது காமம், க்ரோதம், பேராசையால் மூடப்பட்டிருக்கலாம். அவர் சொல்லும் மந்திரத்தை வைத்து அவரை எடைபோட முடியாது. ஆகையால் மனமே பெரியது.

 

இப்படி யோசிக்க யோசிக்க நிறைய விளக்கங்கள் கிடைக்கும்.

 

ஜபம் செய்யும்போதுகூட வாயால் மந்திரத்தைச் சொல்லுவதைவிட மனதால் சொல்லுவது பல மடங்கு பலன் தரும் என்பர் பெரியோர்.

 

ஆக மனமே பெரியது என்பதை நாமும் ஒப்புக்கொண்டு உதட்டளவில் பேசாமல் மனத்தளவில் பேசுவோமாக!

இந்தக் கதை சதபத பிராமணத்தில் உள்ளது.

இரண்டு யானைகளின் மீது அமைக்கப்பட்ட மேடையில் கச்சேரி செய்த ஸ்ரீ முத்தையா பாகவதர்!

இந்தக்கட்டுரையின் ஆக்கத்திற்கு உதவியவர் எனது சம்பந்தி திரு சேஷாத்ரிநாதன் அவர்கள். அவருக்கு எனது நன்றி. அவரது தந்தையார் திரு ராமசுப்ரமணியன் அவர்களின் பாட்டியும் (அப்பாவின் அம்மா), முத்தையா பாகவதரின் தாயாரும் ஸ்ரீ எஸ். ஜி. கிட்டப்பாவின் தாயாரும் உடன் பிறந்த சகோதரிகள். ஆகவே திரு ராமசுப்பிரமணியனின் சித்தப்பா தான் ஸ்ரீ முத்தையா பாகவதர்.

21-10-2017 அக்டோபர் 21,22,23 ஆகிய தேதிகளில் அவர் தனது பழைய நினைவுகளை என்னுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார். அவருக்கு வயது 97. தெளிவாக நுணுக்கமான விவரங்களை அவர் இடம், தேதி, பெயருடன் தெரிவித்தது ஒரு அபூர்வமான விஷயம். திரு சேஷாத்திரிநாதன் மிகவும் பத்திரமாக வைத்திருந்த ஆவணங்களைப் பார்த்ததோடு அவற்றை உடனடியாக போட்டோ எடுக்க விழைந்தேன். அந்த போட்டோக்களை திரு கார்த்திக் (சேஷாத்திரிநாதனின் புதல்வர்) நேர்த்தியாக எடுத்துத் தந்தார். அவருக்கும் நமது நன்றி.

ஸ்ரீ முத்தையா பாகவதர் (பிறப்பு : 15-11-1877 மறைவு : 30-6-1945)

20 ராகங்களை உருவாக்கியவர்.

 

1930ஆம் ஆண்டிலேயே மியூசிக் அகாடமியால் சங்கீத கலாவிதி விருது வழங்கி கவுரவிக்கப்பட்டவர். ஹரிகதா நிகழ்த்துவதில் வல்லவர். ஹரிகேசநல்லூர் முத்தையா பாகவதர் என்று அன்புடன் அழைக்கப்பட்ட அவர் ஹரிகதை செய்வதைக் கேட்பதற்காக மக்கள் திரள் திரளாகக் கூடுவது வழக்கம். பல வெளிநாடுகளுக்கும் அவர் கப்பலில் செல்வது வழக்கம். சிலோன், பினாங்கு, ரங்கூன் உள்ளிட்ட பல இடங்களில் அவரது நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடைபெற்று வந்தன.

மைசூர் மஹாராஜா ஒரு நாள் ஒரு நாதஸ்வர வித்வான் மைசூரில் முத்தையா பாகவதர் இயற்றிய வள்ளி நாயகனே என்ற பாடலை வாசிக்கக் கேட்டார். அப்போது அந்த நாதஸ்வர வித்வான் பாகவதரைப் பற்றிய அனைத்து விவரங்களையும் மன்னரிடம் கூற உடனே பாகவதருக்கு மைசூர் வருமாறு மன்னர் அழைப்பு விடுத்தார் மைசூருக்குச் சென்ற பாகவதர் மன்னரின் அன்புக்குப் பாத்திரராய் விளங்கினார்.

அங்கேயே வசித்து வந்தார் அவர். அவர் மறைந்ததும் மைசூரில் தான்.

 

 

அவருக்கு உரிய மரியாதை தருவதற்காக உப்பரிகையில் வீற்று கதை கேட்கும் மன்னர் தனக்குச் சமமான உயரத்தில் அவர் ஆசனம் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக உயரமான பெரிய இரு யானைகளை நிறுத்தி அவற்றிற்கு இடையே மேடையை அமைத்து அதில் முத்தையா பாகவதர் அமர்ந்து நிகழ்ச்சியை நடத்த ஏற்பாடு செய்வது வழக்கம்.

அந்த அளவுக்கு அவர் மைசூர் ராஜாவின் அன்புக்கும் மரியாதைக்கும் உரியவராகத் திகழ்ந்தார்.

 

 

அவரது நிகழ்ச்சியால் பெரிதும் கவரப்பட்ட மஹாராஜா அவருக்கு யானைக்குட்டி ஒன்றைப் பரிசாக அளித்தார். அதைத் தனது இல்லத்திற்கு கூட்டிச் சென்ற முத்தையா பாகவதரால் அது அடிக்கும் ‘லூட்டியை’ச் சமாளிக்க முடியவில்லை.

கூடக் கூட்டிச் செல்லும் போது தெரு வீதிகளில் அது ஓடுமாம். மக்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு அந்தக் ‘கண்கொள்ளாக் காட்சியைக்’ கண்டு மகிழ்வராம்.

 

வீட்டிலோ தம்புரா உட்பட்ட அனைத்துமே யானையால் உடைபட்டது.

 

பொறுக்க முடியாத முத்தையா பாகவதர் மன்னரிடம் சென்று அந்த அன்புப் பரிசு அன்புத் தொல்லையாக இருப்பதைத் தெரிவித்து யானைக் குட்டியைத் திருப்பிக் கொடுத்தாராம்.

மைசூர் மன்னர் சாமுண்டீஸ்வரி கோவிலில் அவரே பூஜை செய்வது வழக்கம். சாமுண்டீஸ்வரி அம்மன் மீது பல கீர்த்தனைகளை முத்தையா பாகவதர் இயற்றியுள்ளார். மன்னர் பூஜை செய்யும் போது முத்தையா பாகவதர் அந்தப் பாடல்கள் உள்ளிட்ட பல பாடல்களையும் பாடுவது வழக்கம்.

 

திருவனந்தபுரம் அரண்மனையிலிருந்தும் அவருக்கு அழைப்புகள் வழக்கமாக வரும்.

முத்தையா பாகவதர் சங்கீத உலகிற்கும் ஹரிகதா ப்ரவசன கலைக்கும் ஆற்றிய தொண்டு போற்றுதற்குரியது. அவரைப் பற்றிய பல நூல்கள் இப்போது வெளிவந்து கொண்டிருப்பது மகிழ்ச்சி அளிக்கும் ஒன்று.

முத்தையா பாகவதர் மதுரையில் ஒரு சங்கீத பாடசாலையை ஆரம்பித்தார். மதுரை மணி ஐயர் உள்ளிட்ட பிற்கால பிரபலங்கள் பலரும் அந்தப் பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் படித்தவர்களே.மதுரை பள்ளிக்கு சங்கர சேர்வை என்பவர் முதல்வராக இருந்தார். அவரது தம்பி முருக பூபதி பிரபலமான மிருதங்க வித்வான். அந்தப் பள்ளியில் தான் திரு டி.என்.சேஷகோபாலன் பயின்றார்.

முத்தையா பாகவதரின் தம்பி ஹரிஹர பாகவதர் அவருடைய ஹரிகதா காலக்ஷேபத்திற்குப் பின்பாட்டுப் பாடுவார். அவர் இறந்தவுடன் அவரது குமாரர் வைத்தியலிங்கம் (மூக்காண்டி என்பது அவரின் செல்லப் பெயர்) அவர்களை முத்தையா பாகவதர் தத்து எடுத்து வளர்த்தார். பாகவதர் இறந்தவுடன் அவரது அந்திமக் கிரியைகளை இவரே செய்தார். சித்தூர் இசைக் கல்லூரியை வைத்தியலிங்கம் நிர்வகித்து வந்தார்.

 

(எனது சம்பந்த்தியின் தந்தையார்) திரு ராமசுப்பிரமணியனின் தமக்கையாரின் கணவர் திரு கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி டோலக் வாத்தியத்தை வாசிப்பதில் பெரும் நிபுணர். டோலக் கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி அவர்களின் தாய் மாமன் முத்தையா பாகவதர்.

 

அந்தக் காலத்தில் பிரசித்தி பெற்றிருந்த எஸ்.ஜி.கிட்டப்பாவின் நிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்கு காசி ஐயர் ஹார்மோனியம் வாசிப்பார். டோலக்கை திரு கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி வாசிப்பார். அவரது இசை நிகழ்ச்சிகள் பற்றிய அனைத்து நோட்டீஸ்களும் கூட போட்டோ எடுக்கப்பட்டது. (இணைப்பு காண்க)

1947 ஆகஸ்ட் 15ஆம் தேதி இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் அடைந்தது. ஆனால் அதற்கு ஒரு மாதத்திற்கு முன்பாகவே பெரிய அளவில் இசை நிகழ்ச்சிக் கொண்டாட்டங்கள் ஆரம்பமாகி விட்டன.

 

விசேஷ துண்டு பிரசுரங்கள் கச்சேரிகளுக்கென வெளியிடப்பட்டன.(இணைப்பில் காண்க)

சங்கீதமும் ஹரிகதை உபந்யாசமும் தேசபக்தி எழுச்சிக்கும் விடுதலைக்கும் எப்படி வித்திட்டன என்பதை தனியே ஆராய வேண்டும். அவ்வளவு விஷயங்கள் அதில் உள்ளன.

Satapata Brahmana is one of the important Brahmanas, part of the Vedic literature. It says,

“Devas, men, fathers (pitrs=departed souls) and Asuras approached Prajapati. One walked after another and asked him in what manner they have to live. He ordains for each.

To ‘the men clothed and bending their bodies’ ,

‘Your eating shall be in the morning and in the evening’.

The devas were told the sacrifice was to be their food.

The fathers/Pitrs were told to eat only monthly in Moon light;

The beasts (animals) can eat whatever and whenever they liked, in season or out of season

To the Asuras he gave darkness and illusion (Tamas and Maya):-

“Neither the gods/devas nor the Pitrs , nor beasts transgress (their several ordinances); some of the men alone transgress theirs. Hence whatever man grows fat, he grows fat in unrighteousness, since he totters and unable to walk because of his having grown fat by doing  wrong. One should therefore eat in the evening and morning; whosoever knowing this eats only in the evening and in the morning, reaches full measure of life, and whatever he speaks , that  is true. Because he observes the divine truth –Sat.Br.2-4-2-6

In Tamil Poetry book Neethi Venba, there is a verse which says, “Yogis eat once a day, healthy men eat twice a day, Rogis eat thrice a day (gluttons, those who want to fall sick; rogam=sickness)  those who want to leave the earth quickly eat four times a day”.

DISPUTE BETWEEN MIND AND SPEECH

A dispute once took place between Mind and Speech as to which was the better of the two. Both Speech and Mind said, ‘I am excellent’.

Mind said, ’surely I am better than you. For you do not speak anything that is not understood by me (mind).  And since you are only an imitator of what is done by me and a follower in my wake I am surely better than you’.

 

Speech said ‘surely I am better than you, for what you know, I make known. I communicate’

 

Both of them went to appeal to Prajapati for hi decision. He, Prajapati, decided in favour of mind, saying to Speech, ‘Mind is indeed better than you for you are an imitator of its deeds and a follower in its wake’.

 

Then Speech (Vach) being thus gainsaid was dismayed and miscarried. She, speech, then saidt  Prajapati,

‘May I never be your oblation bearer, I whom you have gainsaid’.

 

Hence whatever at the sacrifice is performed for Prajapati, that is performed in a low voice; for Speech would not act as oblation bearer for Prajapati- Sat. Bra. 1-5-1-8

(My comments: These symbolic stories show that the Vedic Hindus were very literate and they can even use speech and language for conveying some message.)

 

Here is an illustration of statecraft following the philosophy of Speech and Mind:

“Let him draw the cups of Soma for Indra Marutvat (accompanied by the Maruts), and not for the Maruts likewise. For were he to draw cups for the Maruts, he would make the people refractory to the nobility. He thus assigns to the Maruts a share therin after Indra, whereby he makes the people subservient and obedient to the nobility—4-3-3-10

நவம்பர் 2017 (ஹே விளம்பி ஐப்பசி/கார்த்திகை) காலண்டர்

 

 

விழா நாட்கள்:- 4 குருநானக் ஜயந்தி, 6- கனகதாசர் ஜயந்தி, 23- சத்ய சாய் பாபா பிறந்த நாள்.

அமாவாசை-18; ஏகாதசி- 14, 29; பௌர்ணமி- 3; சுப முகூர்த்தம்- 2, 9, 24, 30

 

பதினெண் கீழ்க்கணக்கு நூல்களில் ஒன்றான இன்னா நாற்பது என்னும் நூலில் இருந்து 30 பொன்மொழிகள் இதில் உள்ளன. ஒவ்வொரு மாத காலண்டரிலும் 30 அல்லது 31 பொன்மொழிகள் வீதம் இதுவரை ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேலான பொன்மொழிகள் கடந்த ஈராண்டு காலண்டர்களில் இங்கே பதிவிடப்பட்டுள்ளன.

 

நவம்பர் 1 புதன் கிழமை

 

முக்கண்பகவன் அடிதொழாதார்க்கு இன்னா; சக்கரத்தானை மறப்பு இன்னா (சிவனையும், திருமாலையும், பிரமனையும் வழிபடாதார்க்கு இன்பமே இல்லை)

 

நவம்பர் 2 வியாழக்கிழமை

பந்தம் இல்லாத மனைவியின் வனப்பு இன்னா (மனைவிக்கு அழகு இருக்கலாம்; ஆனால் அன்பில்லாவிடில் இன்பம் இல்லை)

 

நவம்பர் 3 வெள்ளிக் கிழமை

தந்தை இல்லாத புதல்வன் அழகு இன்னா ( நல்ல நடிகர் போல அழகு இருக்கலாம்; ஆனால் தந்தை இல்லாத மகன், கல்வி கற்காமல்,  கட்டுப்பாடின்றி திரிவான்; ஆக அங்கே இன்பம் இல்லை)

 

நவம்பர் 4 சனிக்கிழமை

அந்தணர் இல் இருந்து ஊண் இன்னா (அந்தக் காலத்தில் பிராமணர்கள் மனு நீதி சொன்னபடி, சொத்து சுகங்களைத் தேடி வைக்கக்கூடாது; தினமும் யார் வீட்டிலாவது பூஜை செய்து அவர்  அந்த வருமானத்தில் வாழ வேண்டும்; அத்தகைய ஏழைப் பிராமணன் வீட்டில் உட்கார்ந்து சாப்பிடக்கூடாது)

 

நவம்பர் 5 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை

பார்ப்பார் இல் கோழியும் நாயும் புகல் இன்னா (பிராமணர்கள் மிகவும் சுத்த மானவர்கள்; அத்தகையோர் வாழும்    அக்கிரஹாரத்தில் நாய் அல்லது கோழி புகுந்தால் அவர்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி இராது).

 

நவம்பர் 6 திங்கட் கிழமை

ஆர்த்த மனைவி அடங்காமை நன்கு இன்னா ( சில குடும்பங்களில் மனைவி, அடங்காப்பிடாரியாக இருப்பாள்; அங்கும் மகிழ்ச்சி இல்லை).

 

நவம்பர் 7  செவ்வாய்க் கிழமை

நெடுநீர் புணை இன்றி நீந்துதல் இன்னா ( அந்தக் காலத்தில் ஆற்றுப் பாலங்கள் அதிகமில்லை; சிலர் அசட்டுத் தைரியத்தில் நீந்துவர்; உயிரிழப்பர்; ஆகவே தெப்பமின்றி நீந்தக்கூடாது)

 

நவம்பர் 8 புதன் கிழமை

கடுமொழியாளர்  தொடர்பு இன்னா ( சிடு சிடுவென எப்போது பார்த்தாலும், எரிந்து விழும் அல்லது எதிர்மறை சொற்களைப் பேசும் ஆட்களை நண்பராக வைத்துக் கொள்ளதே; இன்பமே இராது)

 

நவம்பர் 9 வியாழக்கிழமை

எருது இல் உழவர்க்குப் போகு ஈரம் இன்னா (சொந்தத்தில் எருது முதலியன இல்லாத உழவர்கள் உடனே உழ முடியாது; நிலத்தில் நீர்ப்பசை வீணாதலைக் கண்டு துன்பமே மிகும்).

 

நவம்பர் 10 வெள்ளிக் கிழமை

கருவிகள் மாறிப் புறங்கொடுத்தல் இன்னா ( ஒரு அரசனுடைய படைகள் புறங்காட்டித் தோற்று ஓடி வருவது துன்பமே தரும்).

நவம்பர் 11 சனிக்கிழமை

திரு உடையாரைச் செறல் இன்னா (செல்வந்தர்களைப் பகைத்தால் இன்பம் இல்லை)

 

நவம்பர் 12 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை

 

சிறை இல் கரும்பினைக் காத்து ஓம்பல் இன்னா ( வேலி இல்லாத கரும்புத் தோட்டத்தைப் பாது காப்பது இன்பம் பயக்காது; பயிர் செய்தால், விலங்குகள் மேயா வண்ணம் பாதுகாத்தல் அவசியம்)

 

 

நவம்பர் 13 திங்கட் கிழமை

 

உறைசேர் பழங்கூரை சேர்ந்து ஒழுகல் இன்னா ( மழைக்காலத்தில் ஒழுகும் கூரை உடைய வீட்டில் வாழ்வது துன்பம் தரும்; அதாவது மழை வரும் முன்னே வலுப்படுத்தல் அவசியம்)

 

நவம்பர் 14 செவ்வாய்க் கிழமை

 

அறம் மனத்தார் கூறும் கடுமொழியும் இன்னா ( அற நெறியில் நிற்கும் நல்லோர் (கோபத்துடன்), சொல்லும் அறிவுரைகள் தீநெறியில் செல்லுவோருக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி தராது)

 

நவம்பர் 15 புதன் கிழமை

மறம் மனத்தார் ஞாட்பில் மடிந்து ஒழுகல் இன்னா (போர்க்களத்தில் (ஞாட்பில்) சோம்பி இருத்தல் வீரம் நிறைந்தவர்க்கு துன்பம் தரும்; பகைவர் தாக்கும் போது சுணக்கம் கூடாது)

நவம்பர் 16 வியாழக்கிழமை

 

இடும்பை உடையார் கொடை இன்னா ( வறுமையில் வாடுவோர், வெளி உலக பகட்டுக்காக, கொடையாளி போல நடிப்பது துன்பம் தரும்)

 

நவம்பர் 17 வெள்ளிக் கிழமை

 

ஆற்றல் இலாதான் பிடித்த படை இன்னா

(திறமை இல்லாதவன் படைக்கலங்களைக் கொண்டு சென்று போரிட்டால், வலிமையுள்ள எதிரி, அதையே பிடுங்கி அடிப்பான்; அப்போது துன்பம் வரும்)

 

நவம்பர் 18 சனிக்கிழமை

 

நாற்றம் இலாத மலரின் அழகு இன்னா ( வாசனை இல்லாத மலர்கள் எவ்வளவு அழகாக இருந்தாலும் இன்பம் தராது; அழகான பெண்கள் குணம் இலாமல் இருந்தால் துன்பம்தான்)

 

நவம்பர் 19 ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை

 

தேற்றம் இலாதான் துணிவு இன்னா (திட்டம் இடாமல் காரியத்தைச் செய்பவனுக்கு இன்பம் இல்லை)

 

நவம்பர் 20 திங்கட் கிழமை

 

நகையாய நண்பினார் நார் இன்னா( சிரித்துச் சிரித்துப் பேசுவோர் உண்மை அன்பு காட்டாவிடில் துன்பமே) முகநக நட்பது நட்பன்று

 

நவம்பர் 21 செவ்வாய்க் கிழமை

 

இகலின் எழுந்தவர் ஒட்டு இன்னா ( கீழ் மக்களுடன் கொள்ளும் நட்பு, துன்பம் தரும்)

வள்ளல்கள் இன்மை பரிலர்க்கு முன் இன்னா (வள்ளல்கள் இல்லாத ஊரில் வாழும் புலவர்க்கு இன்பம் கிடைக்காது)

 

நவம்பர் 22 புதன் கிழமை

 

வண்மை இலாளர் வனப்பு இன்னா ( ஈகைக் குணம் இலாதோர் எவ்வளவு சிறப்பான தோற்றம் உடையாராக இருந்தாலும் மற்றவர்க்கு மகிழ்ச்சி தராது)

நவம்பர் 23 வியாழக்கிழமை

பூமி மாது புனையும் மஹாகவித்

தாம நாப்பண் தயங்கிச் சதிரொளி

ஏமம் வீசி எரிநடு நாயகம்

காம இன்பமும் கைப்பித்த கம்பனே

 

காம இன்பத்தையும் கசப்பென்று தள்ளிவிடத்தக்க இனிமையை ஊட்டும் கவி புனையும் கம்பன் என்னும் மஹாகவி , பூமி தேவி தன் மார்பில் அணிகின்ற மஹாகவிகளாம் இரத்தின வடத்தில் நடுவே நின்று, அழகிய ஒளியையும் இன்பத்தையும் எங்கும் வீசி மிளிர்கின்ற இரத்தினமாக இன்றும் பிரகாசிக்கின்றான்.

 

பாடல் 17

பாங்கில் வேந்தைப் பனிக்குடை பாலிக்கக்

தாங்கும் சக்கர வர்த்தித் தகையினர்;

தூங்குஞ் செந்தமிழ்த் தொல்கவி ராஜர்மேல்

ஓங்கும் கம்பன் ஒருகவி நீழலே

மான சமடு வந்த சரயு போல்

பாந சைப்புல வர்பல குன்றிடை

வான சைல மெனவளர் கம்பனுள்

ஞான வாவியிக் காவியம் நன்குமால்

முதலென வழிநூ லென்ன முடித்துளார் முறையிற் சென்றே

சதிருறா முதநூல் தானே தலைநின்று தயங்குமென்பர்;

மதத்திறன் மதிக்க லாதிம் மதம்விரித் துரைத்தார் தாமும்

எதிரிலா ராமகாதை யெதிர நாவெடுக்க லாரே.

 

பாடல் 21

நூலினை வகுத்துக் கூறும் நுண்ணறி வெனைத்தென் றாலும்

மேலினை வகுக்கு மாபோல் வினைக்கடை வியர்த்தமாமே;

ஞாலத்திற் புலவர் புந்தி நடைத்திறன் கணித்தல் சீவன்

மூலத்தைக் கணித்தல் போலும் முரட்டுற்ற முயற்சியம்மா!

பூதபென திகத்துட் கணிப் புதுமைபூத் தொளிராச் சத்தி

ஓதமோ ரளவைத் தாகி யொதுங்கலு மதற்கும் வேறாய்

மேதகு மனத்தி னூற்றம் விளைந்துமேக் குறலும் கால

பேதத்திற் பின்ன லாய பெரும்பரிணாம மன்றே

 

பரிணாமம் -இயற்கைத் தோற்றத்தினை விளக்கும் அபிவர்த்தன வாதக் கொள்கை ((Evolution)

ஆதலால் அறிஞ ரானோர் அளக்குறார் உளத்தி னாற்றல்

பூதலத் துயரின் போக்கைப் புனைபொறி புகுத்த நோக்கால்

மாதவத் துயர்ந்த முன்னோர் மாண்புள ரென்றும் பின்னோர்

மேதினி விளக்கு ஞானம் மேவல் போல் மேவினாரே

பண்பமை நூல்க ளெல்லாம் பண்டையர் போலப் பீடு

கொண்டன வென்னக் காட்சி கோடற்க இற்றை ஞான்றும்

எண்டயங் குறுநூல் செய்தாங் கிசைநட்டா ருளரே யாதற்

கண்டனம் ராம லிங்க கவியருட் பாவின் காட்டால்

ஆரிய மொழிக் கோர் ஆதி கவியெனும் அழிவில் சீர்த்தி

சேரிய முனிவன் றானே செப்பின னேனுந் தொன்னூல்

கூறிய அறிவில் ஞானக் கோளசைக் குனித்த கம்பன்

சீரிய கலைக்குச் சித்ர லைக்கவி சிறத்தல் செய்ய

 

பாடல் 26

குறைப்பன குறைத்து வேண்டிக் கொள்வன கொண்டு மாற்றம்

செறிப்பன செறித்துச் செப்ப னிட்டசே டகப் பொற் றட்டிற்

குறிப்ப்ன கோலத் துள்ள துகிலிகை கொண்டு யாணர்ப்

பொறிப்பன வாய பொன்சித் திரத்தின் வித்தார மம்ம!

வாங்க அரும் பாதம் வகுத்தவன் என்று வான்மீகியைக் கம்பன் புகழ்கிறான். ஒரு சுலோகத்தில் நான்கு பாதங்கள் உண்டு. அதில் ஒரு பாதத்தைக் கூட மாற்ற முடியாது; இடைச் செருகல் செய்ய முடியாது. அப்படி ஒரு சொல் மாலை வால்மீகி ராமாயணம்.

அதில் கம்பன் கொள்வன கொண்டான்; குறைப்பன குறைத்தான்; சேர்ப்பன சேர்த்தான். பொன் தட்டில் நமக்குத் தமிழில் ராமாயணத்தைத் தந்தான்.

பண்டைய நூல்கள் தான் நூல்கள் என்று எண்ண வேண்டாம். இந்த நாளிலும் கூட குறு நூல் செய்து இசை நட்டார் உளர்; அருட்பிரகாச வள்ளலார் எனப்படும் ராமலிங்கக் கவியின் அருட்பாவும் உண்டு, அல்லவா!

கம்பனை யாராலாவது கணிக்க முடியுமா, என்ன? புலவரின் புத்தி, நடைத்திறன் ஆகியவற்றைக் கணிக்கும் முயற்சியானது உயிர் எப்படித் தோன்றுகிறது என்ற மூலத்தினை ஆராய்ச்சி செய்வதற்கு ஒப்பாகுமல்லவா? அதை எப்படி யாராலும் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாதோ அது போல கம்பனின் அளவற்ற மேதா விலாசத்தையும் நடைத்திறனையும் யாராலும் கணிக்க முடியாது! அம்மம்மா!

என்று இப்படியெல்லாம் வியக்கிறார் கவிஞர் சிவராஜ பிள்ளை.

கம்பனில் தோய்ந்த ரஸிகர் அல்லவா, அவர்.

இன்னும் மேற்கொண்டு உள்ள பாடல்களை அடுத்துப் பார்ப்போம்.
