Item 614 about Tiger
Two thousand year old Sangam Tamil poems praise tigers which will eat only when its prey falls on its right side. If it kills a deer and it falls on the left side, it won’t eat! Valam = right carries more weight than Itam=left in Tamil poems.
Tamil Ref. Puram.190, Akam 238, 252 etc.

Item 615
About rat, mouse (Puram 190)
Rat or mouse eat others food. I don’t like friends like it – Puram.190
Choza king Nalluruthtiran , Mr Good Rudra , rhymes with Tamil words PULI / tiger and ELI/rat.
He says that he likes friends like principled tiger and not rats.

Item 616- About turtle /tortoise
Tamils believed that the mother turtles aways care for its little ones by facing towards them or looking at them. Whenever the poets want to show the care of a hero towards a heroine the poets use this simile
Kuru. 152;
Kurunthokai 152, Killimangalam Kizhār, Kurinji Thinai – What the heroine said to her friend Those who state firmly that I should bear my situation, do not understand love even a little. Love is like a young tortoise that is nourished by the sight of its mother.
If my lover abandons, making me feel helpless, what else is there, except to keep my love inside and get ruined like an egg abandoned by its mother?
Alao in Ainkuru. 44; 48;

Item 617-About Nagaratna
We find the following references about the cobra jewel in Tamil and Sanskrit:
· Kumara Sambhavam of Kalidasa: 2:38, 5:43, Raghuvamsam 6:49, 10:7, 11:59, 11:68,13:12, 17:63;Rtu Samharam 1:20 (In Kalidasa);
· Tamil Aka Nanuru 72, 92, 138, 192, 372;
· Pura Nanuru 172, 294, 398;
· Kurunthokai 239;
· Natrinai 255;
· Kurinchipattu Lines 221,239;
This is not an exhaustive list. We find such references in innumerable places.
What the heroine said to her friend, as the hero listened nearby
My bangles have slipped. My arms have become thin.
Is there any more modesty to lose, O friend, for the lord of the mountains with spiny bamboo fences, where bees with short wings, that buzz on the pollen of swaying glory lily flower clusters whose fragrance spreads into crevices and caves, appear like gems spit by snakes?

Item 618; About crocodile
Ainku. 24
Tamils believed that mother crocodiles eat their own banies.
***
Item 619– About Lizards
The lizrd’s clicking noise is considered as an omen sometimes prophesying good news. He hero finishes his duyy in the distant country and starts to his village when he keenly desires that the lizard at home should tickle whenever she thinks of him and thus gives her hope of his return and relieves of her distress and despair . it is in Akam..351
In Narr. 333, the lady companion at home hears its lovable sound at midnight and consoles the heroine by interpreting its suitably
Akam. 387;88;
***
Item 620–
Even animals listen to lizard’s prophesy!
In Akam 88, there is an interesting scene. A wild boar is depicted to be very careful while entering the millet field. There is a picture in which a boar is about to walk into a trap kept by watchmen in the field but hearing a lizard’s tickling hesitates and slowly steps back and wisely retreats to its rocky dwelling.
Lizards are very common in Indian houses, particularly in villages.
***
Item 621 Crows and Guests
Crows are associated with guests!
Crows are found everywhere in India.
If crows caw in any house that means guests are going to come. There is some science behind it.
If anyone expects guests, then they make spicy, good smelling, special food and the crows can smell it easily.
Then they gather there. But Tamils believed that it can even prophesize about guest’s visit
A foster mother grieves over the elopement of her daughter with the hero and requests the crow to caw and foretell their return to her house; in grateful recognition of this timely help, she promises to feed it and its kith and kin with raw mutton and fat offered in a gold vessel (See Aink.391)

Item 622- About Bird Migration; birds flying like a necklace; pearl garland.
15. Which is soundless, touchless, formless, undecaying, so tasteless, eternal and scentless, beginningless, endless, beyond the Mahat, and constant, knowing that, man escapes from the mouth of Death.

Asabdam asparsam aroopam avyayam,
tathaa arasam nityam agandhavat cha yat I
Anaadi anantam mahatah param dhruvam
nichaayya tat mrityu-mukhaat pramuchyate II Katha Upanishad (1.3.15)
This is soundless, touchless, colorless, tasteless, smell-less, beginningless, endless, decayless, deathless, changeless, and beyond Mahat. Having clearly known that, one is totally freed from the jaws of death. (1-3-15)
Athma is without sound, without touch, without form, without taste, without smell. So it is not available for outward perception by five jnanendriyas, ear, skin, eye, tongue and nose. It is without decay, and has no beginning or end; eternal and changeless; subtler than Hiranyagarbha, Brahman with total subtle universe. Realizing this Athma, one is freed from the notion “I am mortal, subject to death and decay”, which is called freedom from mortality.
1. The self-existent created the senses out-going: therefore, one sees outside and not the atman within. Some intelligent man, with his senses turned away, (from their object), desirous of immortality, sees the atman within. Katha Upanishad (2.1.1)
Yama said: The self-existent Supreme Lord inflicted an injury upon the sense-organs in creating them with outgoing tendencies; therefore, a man perceives only outer objects with them and not the inner Self. But a calm person, wishing for Immortality, beholds the inner Self with his eyes closed.
1-2-12. Contemplating with a concentrated mind, weaned from all external objects on the atman, ancient, hard to see, lodged in the inmost recess, located in intelligence, and seated amidst miserable surroundings, the intelligent man renounces joy and grief.
Or
Hidden Nature: The Self (Atman) is described as “difficult to be seen” (durdarśam), deeply hidden/mysterious (gūḍham), and residing in the secret cave of the heart (guhāhitaṃ).
The Method (Adhyātma Yoga): The verse provides one of the earliest explicit references to yoga as a spiritual tool. Through adhyātmayogādhigamena (meditation on the inner Self), the seeker comprehends the divine Atman.
Transcending Duality: Upon realizing this eternal Self, the wise person (dhīra) leaves both joy and sorrow (harṣaśokau jahāti) far behind, attaining absolute inner peace.

ITEM 604 — Hare on Moon
Hare on moon is described in Sanskrit and Tamil books.
In Sangam literature we see it in
Akam .141. we see it in Panchatantra stories as well.
Akanānūru 141, Nakkeerar, Pālai Thinai – What the heroine said to her friend
May you live long, my friend! My nights are sweet with dreams; my days have seen good omens in our decorated house; and my heart is very full and happy with great desire.
May he come when the full moon with its dark spots that appear like a hare, joins the Pleiades constellation in the middle of the night, when farming dies down because the rain in the sky moved away, and when Karthikai festive lights are lit and flower garlands are hung in the streets of our ancient town.
A bride wearing small bangles, fragrant thakaram paste in her short hair, joins other women and boils milk on a stove with many sides. Women pound rice from the bent paddy spears in the large fields with their strong pestles, and on hearing the rapid pounding sounds a pregnant heron perched on a nearby banana tree with sweet fruits flies away in fear to a nearby mango tree with a tall trunk.
He went to earn wealth and fame like that of Idaiyāru town that belongs to the victorious Karikāl Chozhan who lifts people who are facing tough times.
He went on the honey-fragrant, tall Vēnkadam mountain paths, where male monkeys leap and frolic, dropping fresh naranthai flowers that grow between the boulders near vēngai trees that have tiger-colored flowers with dots.

ITEM 605- kartikai light festival
Kartikai festival is celebrated in Tamil Nadu on a grand scale until this day.
It has been celebrated for over 2000 years, here is a reference in

ITEM 606 ashtami Chandra
The crescent moon on the eighth – Ashtami- day is compared with the forehead of a woman
Kuru. 129;
***
ITEM 607 – moon devoured by the snake
Like in Sanskrit books, Tamils also described lunar eclipse as a snake devouring the moon.
Hindus calculated the lunar and solar eclipses precisely and announced them well in advance in the almanacs/ panchangams.
But the popular belief that moon devoured by the snake stayed.
Here are the references,
Akam 114;
Cirupan .lines 180-185;
***
ITEM 608 lesson from moon
Tamils even taught some lesson about the transitoriness of life to the common men using moon..
According to Uraiyur Mutukuttanar the moon has a lesson even for the ignorant; one can learn the transitoriness and changeability of the lives and things of the world by observing the moon in the sky- Puram 27.

ITEM 609
Worshipping seven stars!
Brahmins worship seven seers called SAPTA RISHIS THRICE A DAY. THEY REPRESENT SEVEN STARS IN URSA MAJOR CONSTELLATION.
Seven Stars= Seven Seers;
Panini also mentioned the seven seers in the same order 2700 years ago as in Brahmin’s daily worship.
Tamils knew them very well because they mentioned star Arundhati very often.
Arundhati star is a part of a double star system of Vasistha in the Ursa Major constellation.
Here is a reference where the poet says worshipful seven stars in Narri .231
***
ITEM 610 – thunder and snake
Tamils had a superstition about snakes and thunder. They believed that thunder kills snakes.
Very often they used the expression that the thunder is the enemy of snakes
Puram.17-38;37-1; 58-6; 126-19; 366-3;
Kuru .158; 190;268;391;
Akam.92-11; 323-10; 202-9;
Narri.37-8; 114-9;129-7; 255-10;
Pathir.51-25;
In a general description poetess Avvaiyar says that the thunder was so fierce that it splits the hills and even shakes the Himalayas –
Kuru. 158 (Poem is given below)
***
ITEM 611- rainbow – Indra Dhanush
In Sanskrit rainbow is called Indra’s bow.
One Tamil Sangam poet described it as the garland of Vishnu.
Akam. 175.
Another poet compared it with the neck stripes of parrot- Akam. 192.
***
ITEM 612- Hail in Sangam works
Hail is a form of solid precipitation consisting of balls or irregular lumps of ice. It forms inside severe thunderstorms when strong updrafts carry raindrops high into the freezing atmosphere. These ice pieces grow in layers until they become too heavy for the wind to support and fall to earth.
The fall of hail is likened to the fall of small white flowers from the Murunkai trees and the Marram trees-
Akam. 101; 211;
Another poet compared it to the dice round in shape- Akam. 334; or
Eenkai flowers- – Akam.125.
***
ITEM 613- rain
Many world poets have described rain in beautiful words. Tamils also did not miss it.
We see some beautiful descriptions in
Akam. 188;
Narri 139; 238; 248;
Kuru. 158; 280;
Kurunthokai 158, Avvaiyār, Kurinji Thinai –
What the heroine said to the rain, as the hero listened nearby
O rain! You have come with your swift and roaring thunder, that can kill snakes in the lofty mountains, mixed with winds carrying swollen, dark clouds.
You have the ability to cause the greatly famous Himalayas to tremble. Why do you not have any pity for pathetic women who are without their lovers?

If one looks at what Shakespeare says about omens, in particular about owls, one would know that Hindu beliefs only were prevalent in the whole of Europe.
The very word OWL is derived from ULUKA in Sanskrit. it is in Atharva Veda, Sangam Tamil Literature and Sanskrit books on Omens.
All knew that Sakunam is the Sanskrit word for Bird as well as good and Bad predictions and forecasts.
But owls have some good connotations as well. Throughout Europe, we see it in the emblems ofmany educational institutions. And in Hinduism, owl is the Vahana of Goddess Lakshmi.
Let us first look at what Shakespeare says about this bad bird…………………………………. ***

கோத்ரங்களின் பட்டியல் – 1
