Soma Yaga in India and Iran- part 2

This is the second part of Soma Yaga in India and Iran .

The Barsom or the bundle of twigs which is indispensable at the time of reciting Ijashne, is to be traced to one of the sacrificial rites at the great Soma. It was erroneously identified with the Barhis or sacred Kusha grass. Brahmins used to spread the sacred grass and invoke deities. Martin Haug thinks that it may be some unknown custom in the Soma sacrifice.

(Barsom or Baresma is a bundle of twigs. Parsi priests do the rites by holding them in their hands. Hindu priests also carry bundle of ficus tree (asvatta) twigs, but they don’t hold it in their hands. They place it in the fire one by one with ghee accompanied by mantras).

At the time of soma libation called Savana, which is to be performed three times on the same day , the three Sama Veda priests, the Udgata, ,the Prastota and the Pratiharta require a certain number of wooden sticks to be placed in a certain order when chanting the Samans. They use for this purpose the Udumbara tree, and call them Kusha, which is generally given to the sacred grass.

In the Agnishtoma 15 such sticks are required at the morning libation.17 at noon and 21 in the evening.

In other sacrifices such as Aptoryama, even a much large number of such sticks is required. The three singers then sing successively, one by one, in a very solemn manner the FIVE parts into which every Saman or verse adapted for singing is divided at certain sacrifices, while putting some of the sticks into a proper order. This ceremony is most essential, and unless observed and properly performed, all the effects of the Samans is lost.

The five parts of Saman mentioned above is called Pacha bhaktika. Performing of Saman chants is believed to take the sacrificer to the heaven. Most important of these is called Rathantaram (Carriage).

At the same time another peculiar custom is to be observed, which may be traced in the Yasna also. As soon as the singers chanted their verses , one of the Hotas must repeat a series of mantras from the Rigveda in order to praise and extoll the Saman. This ceremony is called Shastram.

This can be compared to a chanting in the Parsi religion.

At the end of the different Has of the Yasna, especially its Gatha portion, verses of the three hymns are often invoked as divine beings.

In Yas 19-6 we have seen that it is considered very meritorious to worship the Ahura Vairya formula after having repeated.

With regard to the division of the Samans into FIVE parts, it may be remarked that the Ahuna-vairya formula which is as important for the Parsi s as the Rathantaram Saman was for the Vedic Hindus, was also divided into FIVE parts.

xxxx

APRI Ceremony

In the Afringan ceremony of the Parsis there may be discovered a trace of Vedic ‘Apri’ ceremony, which is preparatory to the killing and offering of the sacrificial goats. The name is the same; Apri in Sanskrit, Afri in the Avesta, which initially means to invite; with which invitation the name of the being or beings, in whose honour the ceremony being performed, must always be mentioned. The Parsis mention the name of a deceased person or of an angel. The Vedic Hindus insert the names of different deities who are expected to come and enjoy the meal prepared for them. These solemn invitations being accompanied with a blessing, the Parsis understand by this ceremony a benediction . There are 11 Apri invocations.

Xxxx

Darsa Purnamasa

The new moon and full moon sacrifices known as Darsa purnama Ishti seems to correspond with the Darun ceremony of the Parsis, both are very simple; the Hindus use chiefly the Purodasha or sacrificial cakes, the Parsis the sacred bread Darun, which corresponds to the Purodasha.

Xxxx

The Chaturmasya Ishti

Chaturmasya Ishti is offered every four months or two seasons, corresponds to the Gahanbar ceremony of the Parsis. They celebrate it six times a year. Sacrificing animals was essential for these ceremonies among the Parsis until recent times; so it is with the Hindus also.

But as to animal sacrifice there is a great difference between the Hindus and the Zoroastrians / Parsis. Hindus must throw some parts of the sacrificed animal, such as the vapaa- peritoneum- , into the fire; while the Parsis simply consecrate the flesh and eat it as a solemn meal. They don’t throw it into the fire.

Xxx

Go Mutra or Cow urine ceremony

The great purification ceremony by means of cow’s urine is practised by the Parsis until this day . Hindus also do it. Pancha gavyam- five products of the most sacred animal cow — is used by the Hindus. One of the five products is cow’s urine.

Xxx

Kushti or Sacred thread ceremony

Hindus and Parsis wear sacred thread. Parsis call it KUSTI, aiwya aonhanem in the Zend Avesta. (Probably a corrupted form of Yajnopaveetham in Sanskrit).

As long as this ceremony has not been performed, one is no real member of the Parsi or Hindu community. The time for performing it lasts from 7 years to 16; the Parsis are invested with it in their seventh year.

(Manu Smrti gives different ages for sacred thread for Brahmana, Kshatriya and Vaisya communities).

Xxxx

Funeral ceremony

About the funeral rites, some similarities may be pointed out. After the death of a man, Hindus as well as Parsis must pray to raise the soul of the deceased up to heaven, which is the third day ceremony for the Parsis . On the tenth day after the death, Parsis perform certain ceremony and the Hindus do Kaka sparsha ceremony, that is they expose a ball of rice to be taken by a crow.

Xxx

Meru mountain

As to cosmological opinions the Hindus divide the whole world into seven dvipas, the Parsis into seven Keshvars- karshvare in the Avesta- regions. Both acknowledge a central mountain, which is called Meru by the Hindus and Albright by the Parsis . Haro barezaiti in the Avesta.

My comments

Six seasons are seen only in India, where as only four seasons are clearly marked in the Western countries, particularly colder countries. Since Hindus migrated to Iran from India they retained the six seasons. So they have nothing to do with any other areas in the world.

Kusti ceremony is also seen only in Iran and India. So they are the original inhabitants of India. This sacred thread ceremony is not seen anywhere in the world. So Hindu migration from India is confirmed.

Soma juice usage and fire worship are seen only among Hindus and the Parsis in the world. Not even a trace of it is seen anywhere else.

Full moon, new moon fire worship is mentioned in the Vedas and the Parsi religion only. This also confirms that it originated in India and spread out side.

Funeral rites, marriage rites and wearing pure white clothes during the ceremonies also proved it Hindu based. Cotton clothes and white silk are used from time immemorial by the Hindus.

Milk, Cotton, paddy and seasame seeds used in Hindu ceremonies also proved hinduswere original inhabitants of India. These plants are tropical.

Above all these things, Vedic Sanskrit and Vedic customs are seen only in Iran and India. They are more fully developed in India than in Iran for over 2000 years. Vedic Sanskrit also was well developed with grammar and etymology and pronunciation guides, which is completely absent in Iran.

I will give the list of Vedic Sanskrit and Avestan language words separately.

Gatha for song and Manas for mind are seen in the oldest part of the Zend Avesta. Manas, Mind, Manam are seen in English and ancient Tamil literature. These words also proved Hindus migrated to Iran. Because words like manas, gatha were used in a vast geographical area in Indian subcontinent even before 2300 years. So the base was India and not Iran, certainly not colder areas of Asia or Europe.

I have found Gatha verses like the Bhagavad Gita and Rigveda and Atharvana Veda in the oldest part of the Zend Avesta.

Foreign translators of the Vedas misled the entire world with a wrong interpretation of the Soma herb. They dodged when starnge information about Soma herb came without interpretation or translation. Soma is brought by ealgles from heaven, Soma is a red tree, Soma purifies mind, Soma cures, Soma drives away Sins, Soma in Bhagavd Gita, Soma in Vishnu Sahsranama etc are ignored by Westerners. Soma is praised by the national poet Subrahmanya Bharati is also not received any attention from any quarters.
Bhagavad Gita , Vishnu Sahsranama and Dalvaipuram Tamil Copper Plates and many other sources praise Soma juice and present it with a positive coonotation.
Bhagavad Gita 9-20
The knowers of the the three Vedas who drink the Soma juice and are cleaned of sin, worshipping me with sacrifices, pray for the way to heaven. They reach the holy world of Indra (the lord of heaven) and enjoy in heaven the pleasures of the gods (9-20)
Let us look at what the greatest of the modern Tamil poets say about Soma herb :-

Bhrati himself has translated this poem into English:-

Unto the Mother (A Song of Sacrifice)
Some cll thee Matter; others have named thee Force
As Nature some do adore thee; others know as life,
Some call thee Mind.Yet others have named thee God.
Energy Supreme, O Mother, by grace accept our sacrifice
drink this excellent soma-wine that we offer thee
and let us behold thy dance of Bliss
………
(and in the fourth stanza (according to Tamil version)
Bharati adds)

Luminous thought is our soma wine
we have passed it for thee from the bright leaves of earthly life
by the force of Will.
Drink it O Mother, for we long to behold thine exultant dance
and sing ourselves into gods

(And in the third stanza, Bharati left some part not translated, but Dr T N Ramachandran gives it in English within brackets)

O thou true nectar, healer of wounds
and maker of delights
O deathless fire, O source of light and force
(virtue and perfervour gush forth
From thee- the spa of divine grace!
Through hast vowed ever to stand by us
to foster us in loving grace)

MY COMMENTS
Through out the Vedas, nectar, honey, Madhu/mead, Soma are used in interchangeable way. So no one is sure what the seers meant. They deliberately punned on the word Soma. Even according to Western translators it has more than three meanings.
Here in Tamil and Bharati’s own English translation we see Soma Juice in good and positive light.
In Tamil the title is ‘Siva Shakt’i and in English the title is
Unto the Mother (A Song of Sacrifice)
So we see Soma is deified as in the Vedas. There we see even the vessels that contain Soma are deified; the stones that press the Soma herb are deified. In short everything linked to Soma is Divine. Bharati is also in the same wave length. So it is not a narcotic drug as projected by the Westerners.
xxx
In another verse also Bharati confirms his positive views on Soma Rasa unlike foreign translators:-
Vedic Rishis are punning on words and all the translators are confused with words like Soma, Madhu, Pasu, Ayas, Sea/Sky, Sindhu, Asva, Ship, Bird etc.
Even the Western translators clash on certain words and five people give five different meanings!
Coming to Soma, there is always a pun on this word to mean Soma herb and the Moon. Somasekar, Somasundaram are common names in Tamil linked to Lord Shiva.

Here DR T N RAMACHANDRAN translate the poem as Moon.
Look at the translation of the poem ‘Jaya Soma’

182.In Praise of the Moon
Hil, Soma, hail soma, hail Lord Chandra
Praise be, praise be.
Indra is the lord thanks to you.
Asuric Maya you did subdue
Wonderous earth you bathed with cool rays
You killed my woe and gave me grace
Lovers on earth you do protect
Two to thrive as one you connect
When darkness coms like clouds murky
Your smile makes it flee panicky.

MY COMMENTS
Here also there is pun on the word- Soma
Soma herb is associated with Indra throughout the Rig Veda and not Moon. Indra destroyed Asuras with the power of Soma herb says Rig Veda. Other lines in the poem may be attributed to both moon and Soma herb. So I take its as a poem on Soma herb for the simple reason that moon is not associated with Indra or with the destruction of Asuras.
From another angle, one may even say that Bharati also used the word Soma in two meanings like Vedic Rishis.
And to support my view I will even say that Bharti himslef sung on Moon with the Tamil word ‘Vennilavu’ in his other poems
I have given the Tamil originals for the sake of Tamil knowing public:-

All of us look at sun and moon going into sea or coming out of sea if you live in a coastal area. In Kanyakumari , the southernmost tip of India, tourists throng to see such memorable scene. We were waiting for an hour to see the sun disappearing/setting in Santorini island in Greece. Unless you go well in advance you wouldn’t get a vantage point to watch it. Vedic rishsis/seers were all over India and they speak about hills and vales, rivers and oceans, stars and planets and sun and moon.

All of us watch the full moon and sun; but only a Vedic seer described it beautifully in a poem. He gave free rein to his imagination. Sun and moon as two youngsters are playing by hiding in sea and coming out of it!! In other words, played Hide and Seek game. As children all of us have played hide and seek. Parents do play this game with their children But look at what a Vedic seer say about it:-

HYMN LXXXI; AV; BOOK 7; SUKTA 396

A hymn to the New Moon

1.Forward and backward by their wondrous power move these
two youths, disporting, round the ocean.
One views all living things, and thou, the other, art born again
   arranging times and seasons.

2.Thou art re-born for ever new: thou marchest, ensign of days,
   in forefront of the mornings.
Marching thou dealest to the Gods their portion. Thou lengthe-
nest, Moon! the days of man’s existence.

3.O spray of Soma, Lord of Wars! all-perfect verily art thou.
Make me all-perfect, Beauteous One! in riches and in progeny.

4.Thou art the New Moon, fair to see, thou art complete in every
   part.
May I be perfect, fully blest in every way in steeds and kine, in
   children, cattle, home, and wealth.

5.Inflate thee with his vital breath who hathes us and whom we
   detest.
May we grow rich in steeds and kine, in children, cattle, houses,
   wealth.

5.With that unwasting stalk which Gods, unwasting Gods, in-
   crease and eat, p. a307
May Varuna, Brihaspati, and Indra, the Lords and Guardians of
   the world, increase us.

PUN ON WORDS

FOREIGN GANG UNDER MAX MULLER GOT CONFUSED IN TRANSLATING AND INTERPRETING VEDAS.

The reason being they started translating them to denigrate or belittle Hinduism.

They did not believe in what Hindus believed. Moreover, they believed a faith which has quite opposite views.

Above all, those idiots wrote from foreign soil. Though a few people like Ralph T H Griffith lived in India, they did not practise Hinduism. Unless you practise something you wouldn’t know the intricacies, significance and the symbolic meanings in such things. Max Muller never visited India. Max Muller gang never watched anything Hindu. May be,  he may have seen some pictures.

Vedic rishis sing and dance saying we love talking in mysterious language; coded language; symbolic language. They just use numbers and leave it for your interpretation. Many thousand years after Vedic seers, Tamil Siddhas used that symbolic language. I have never seen such poems in any other language in the world. The number f poems with NUMBERS are enormous in the Rig Veda, the oldest book in the world, dated between 4000 BCE and 1500 BCE.

There is another difficulty in translating or interpreting Vedas. Several words, used quite often, have two or three meanings. Vedic rishis enjoyed pun on words like SINDHU, PASU, AYAS, MANU, SOMA, SEA/SKY, SARASVATI, INDRA, SHIP, ASVA etc

Actually we also do use such words with double meaning; every language has it. But one who is in the field, knows what one wants to say in a particular circumstance.

xxx

MY COMMENTS

Here is my comment. Two youths are playing in the sea. Both sea and sky are blue in colour. So foreigners translated all seas as sky in the Vedas. That is a blunder. In this sukta also they did it. They say that two youths are playing in the sky. But it would make better sense if you imagine the real sea. Youths do this in village ponds and wells. They do play hide and seek in water and on the ground. One must underline the words

Forward and backward by their wondrous power move these
two youths, disporting, round the ocean.
One views all living things, and thou, the other, art born again
   arranging times and seasons.

Stanza /Mantra 1

The footnote says it is already in the Rig Veda 10-85-18

Most of the Atharvana Veda poems are taken from the oldest book in the world Rig Veda and presented with some minor changes. I don’t know why they did it.

Stanza /Mantra 2

Here is a beautiful description. Moon is described as the FLAG of the day. It announces the arrival of sun and disappears/sets. Hindus invented FLAG. It is in Harappan seal. Flags are in Ramayana and Mahabharata. Even today if you go to Tamil Nadu you can see the carriers of flags and other symbols go first, followed by drums on bulls, elephant and camels. Vedic pundits reciting Vedas also are part of the procession. Those who have not seen such things, couldn’t interpret Vedas properly. In North India, all such things gone into oblivion because of continuous foreign attacks from outside India.

There is another important statement in mantra two- YOU/moon LENGHTHEN THE DAYS OF MAN’S EXISTENCE.

This is a scientific matter which neither Russian nor American scientists have found yet. Throughout the Vedas, Moon is associated with plants’ growth. Soma stands for Moon and Soma herb. Mysterious properties of Soma plant are described all over the Vedas.

In Bhagavad Gita 9-20, Lord Krishna says

Those who drink Soma juice are cleansed of sin. By drinking the juice in fire sacrifices they go to heaven.

Greatest of the modern Tamil poets, Subrahmanya Bharati also praised Soma juice in two verses.

Dalavaipuram Copper Plates of Pandya Parantaka Veera Narayanan of 9th century CE praised ‘Manosuddha Somabana Kataka Soma Yaji’. One who drinks the Soma Juice is purified in Mind. It is an elixir which elevates you spiritually.

Kanchi Paramacharya in his Vijaya Yatra book says those who do Soma Yaga (Fire sacrifice) are given white umbrella. Sanskrit literature and later Sangam Tamil literature also show white umbrella are held only by emperors.

Now I wonder the Soma here means the herb Soma or the Moon Soma. Moon associated with growth is yet to be confirmed by science. Seeing moon immediately after new moon day and full moon day are considered holy. If one sees 1000 such full moons then it leads to a great celebration.

Foreigners don’t know a thing about this Great Hindu ceremony known as Sahasra Chandra/Soma Darsana Ceremony.

Here is an old news item from year 2008:–

Sahasra Poorna Chandra Darshana Santhi Mahotsavam

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba , the Divine incarnation of the Kali Yuga is entering the auspicious 83rd year of His advent on 23rd November, 2008. This holy event is an occasion providing us a unique opportunity to observe and celebrate it in a grand and auspicious manner.

The celebration of the completion of 1000 full moon days of the divine incarnation is a unique and auspicious event.

Words can’t explain the kind of bliss that thousands of devotees witnessed during the last day of Sahasra Poorna Chandra Darshana Shanthi Mahotsavam.

Apart from the many thousands, there were many Swami ji’s belonging to various temples, spiritual organisations and Institutions. The atmosphere was totally Divine and why not – it was the day to thank the DIVINE for coming to His world, and witnessing 1000 full moons in this BODY.

Kanchi Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Sarasvathi attended the event along with other Heads of Mutts.

In short, moon is associated with growth and longevity.

Mantra 3

Here moon is linked with soma herb.

Lord of War is Moon! In all cultures planet Mars is associated with war. The colour of the planet is also blood red. But here, moon is called God of War! The footnote adds “probably because the first quarter of the moon was considered a favourable time for predatory excursions”.

But I think moon is associated with mind according to Vedas (RV.10-90). Next mantra is also about the tidal force

(High tides and low tides are caused by the moon. The moon’s gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon. These bulges of water are high tides.)

Mantra 4

Special fire sacrifices are done on New Moon and Full Moon days. Goddesses Anumati and Raka are worshipped by Vedic Hindus. And the Yagas are called Darsa purnamasa. New moon day called Amavasya is also important. Some people start the Hindu month from Amvasya . Here First seen is Amavasya. And then the seer prays for children,  cattle, horse, house and wealth it made more sense when they did special sacrifices. but later they left the fire sacrifice and started Purnima Puja. It is very popular among Devi worshippers. They do Pur nami puja with flowers and offer cooked Prasad. (I have seen it performed by Swamiji Krishna of Ayakkudi near Tenkasi)

New  moon is described as ‘complete’. For Hindus it is a complete day. They start new ventures on New Moon day.

Mantra 5

Here the seer asks the moon to bulge, surge. We know it happens on both full moon and new moon days. It disturbs people who are already suffering from mental health problems. And the argument is human body contains 70 percent water like earth. So the moon affects humans as well, particularly on Full moon and New moon days.

Here also the seer prays for all good things.

Mantra 6

Now there is a clear reference to Soma juice and its effect on Devas/ heavenly people. Like gods we must also increase/ grow prays the mantra. In short give us growth

The important thing is previous two mantras are also about Full moon and New moon days.

So it is better to look at them together. (I am giving them separately)

In the first part posted yesterday, I gave the full hymn on agriculture (RV 10-101). Let us take the first three mantras from it for discussion:

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhZ_phuIS4CeTMfHaiRJSKpQK_bkza6yVzhloxh6B9Zy3DWaDX_7C5pN8euTdIvEIW7QwBUsVzIAZKJJ_1c5VlNxt5o_rciy6HF7_qSz-_W1tyQ1W3W_twCtfR8ZJWzuETBmnlpm6pY4ZiT2zvE_nOZICw-6jcT4AjlCe45RGtM1WP2q5UMKVR8ZbT6KA=w588-h329

RIG VEDA 10-101

.1. WAKE with one mind, my friends, and kindle Agni, ye who are many and who dwell together.

Agni and Dadhikras and Dawn the Goddess, you, Gods with Indra, I call down to help us.

2. Make pleasant hymns, spin out your songs and praises: build ye a ship equipped with oars for transport.

Prepare the implements, make all things ready, and let the sacrifice, my friends, go forward.

3. Lay on the yokes, and fasten well the traces: formed is the furrow, sow the seed within it.

Through song may we find bearing fraught with plenty: near to the ripened grain approach the sickle.

My Comments

This hymn is sung by a Rishi called Budha, Son of Soman . it is very interesting to see Budha, son of Soma, because this occurs in mythological stories in the Puranas and the Nava Graha Stuti/hymn.

Budha , planet Mercury, is praised as the Son of Moon in the later Sanskrit hymns. There is some science behind it. I have already explained in one of my articles about the scientific theories on the origin of moon. They are called Daughter Theory, Sister Theory, Friend theory etc. Now let us take the daughter or Son Theory. Moon was thrown out of earth when Mercury crashed on earth millions or billions of years ago.

The diameter of the moon is similar to the diameter of the Pacific ocean. So scientists believe that a big chunk of earth was thrown out of earth from the area of Pacific ocean. But scientists never said anything about Mercury dashing against the planet earth. But Hindus believe so. Hindus will be proved right in course of time. So Hindus may boast that they were scientists from the days of Rig Veda, when the fact is proved.

In the first mantra,  Rishi Budha calls his comrades to ‘wake up’ and do the job. Rig vedic rishis claim in many Mantras they always enjoy speaking in mysterious language, may be coded or symbolic language. So all the mantras can be explained in spiritual, philosophical, scientific, literal, symbolic ways. Here the rsihsi’s (Seer’s) call ‘Wake Up’ is similar to ‘Uththishta’ in Upanishad and Bhagavad Gita. Krishna wakes Arjuna in at least five places in the Bhagavad Gita with the word ‘Uththista’ (Arise).

Andal , the mystic Tamil woman, also says to her colleagues, ‘O Ladies What is this long sleep? Wake up’. Philosophers interpret it as a clarion call to the spirt (Atma) in the body. So Andal was not speaking about the ordinary sleep. In the same way we may interpret it as a clarion call to the Atma in every human being.

The word ‘Dadhikra’ in the first mantra is also mysterious. Brahmins do a mantra with this name  in their Sandhaya Vandhana thrice a day. It is interpreted as a ‘Special Horse of Indra’ or a’ Flying Horse’. One researcher interpreted as an Ostrich and showed ostrich eggs were discovered in ancient beds of India. Others interpreted as the one horn ‘Unicorn in Indus seals’ as Dahikran. It may be a flying horse. Even for Indus Valley researchers, Unicorn seal has been a mystery!

Xxx

Get ready with Ships!

The second mantra is also interesting which talks about ships or boats. He asks workers to get ready with the tools, equipment or implements. Like first mantra it asks Brahmins to get ready with Fire Sacrifice.

xxx

My comments

I think the rishi is addressing the sections of community:-

Brahmins ,Go forward with Agni/fire. It means do your daily fire rituals.

Business men, Go around the ocean and bring us treasures. Actually there is a Tamil saying ‘By Sailing the Oceans, Look for Treasures’.

Then it addresses the agriculturists; get ready with your tools. From third mantra onwards it is purely agricultural.

There are two more points:-

It is a farmers song which is well featured in Tamil literature such Tamil epic Silappadikaram, Tamil Kavya Kamba Ramayanam. It is called Uzavar Odhai.

Readers who have seen the beautiful song in the Hindi film ‘Mother India’ would know what it is. Farmers sing songs while doing harvest or sowing in groups.

The second point is ‘Spin out Your Songs!’ Throughout the Rig Veda poetry is described with various similes. It shows they are culturally advanced. Here the poet says ‘Spin out your Songs’; in another hymn a poet says ‘ Fire Your Arrows of Songs/poems.

Another point is also worth mentioning here. The Poet’s name may be imaginary. In Tamil Sangam literature, at least 20 poets have some strange names! The names are crated with the expressions or cliché they used in their poems. We See Kaakai Padiniyar, the woman who sings Crows, They puri Pazankayranar , the poet Worn out Rope, Sempulap Peyar Neerar, the poet Red Earth Water Mixing etc. For this and for the arrangement of poems in Tamil anthologies Tamil compilers followed Rig Veda. They arranged the poems like Vyasa did with the four Vedas. Budhan, son of Soma/Moon, may also be an imaginary name because here he is saying something about Soma.

xxx

MUSIC HELPS PALNTS TO GROW RICHER

The third mantra is very important. It describes stages in farming from seeding to harvesting. More importantly it says ,

‘Through song may we find bearing fraught with plenty: near to the ripened grain approach the sickle’.

Songs increase Harvest. That is music helps plants to grow faster and healthier. Harvest is increased by songs. Another point emphasized here is It is a Farmers Song.

SCIENCE BEHIND SOMA PALANT

The name of the Rishi throws more light on the mysterious Soma plant. Soma is used in many senses, meanings in the Rig Veda. But the meaning of Soma, mostly, is Moon or Soma herb. In a passage in the Rig Veda Soma herb is called Number 15, i.e. Pancha Dasa Soma. Sayana explains the reason for it. The Soma plant grows like Moon for 15 days and then decreases  for 15 days in the dark half of month. Probably this is the reason to call Moon and the herb with the same name.

XXX

KRISHNA ON SOMA PLANTS

Now this quality of Soma plant is new to botanists . Hindus are the only community in the whole world who connects Moon and Plants. Soma is punned in Rig Veda to mean the mystery herb and Moon.

Lord Krishna also links Moon with plants; Soma Herb and the Moon; he also confirms the magical qualities of Moon and Soma herb.

In Bhagavad Gita  9-20 , Lord Krishna says,

“The knowers of the three Vedas who drink the Soma juice and are cleansed of sin , worshipping Me with sacrifices, pray for the way to heaven “.

In Bhagavad Gita  15-13 , Lord Krishna says,

“And entering the earth, I support all beings by My vital energy; and becoming the sapful soma/ moon , I nourish all herbs/plants”.

Here we come across some scientific matter yet to be confirmed by science.

1.Soma is not a narcotic or hallucinatory drug as claimed by the vicious, half baked Westerners. It is an elixir and tonic. It purifies one’s mind. Alcoholic drinks spoil one’s mind and body are known facts. But the juice of Soma is healthy. It is confirmed by Tamil Inscription Dalavaipuram Copper Plates of Parantaka Veera Narayanan, the Pandya king of Ninth Century CE. Here a person known as Kataka Somayaji of Somasikurichi is described as ‘Mano Sudha Soma yaji’, ‘one who was purified in mind’ by SomaYaga/ fire sacrifice. That person existed long before this Pandya king, says the inscription.

From this we know the belief of Tamils about the Soma herb. Kanchi Paramacharya also says that a person who has done Soma Yaga is given a White Umbrella, which is held only by Three Great Kings of Tamil Nadu (and in other parts of India, the emperors of Hindu India).

The second point is the link between the plants and the moon. It has been described throughout Sanskrit literature and  confirmed by the Rig Veda and the Bhagavad Gita. Modern botanists have never found or reported any link between the Moon and Plant growth. But Even Lord Krishna reports it in the Gita. Scientists will one day find such a ink and Hindus , then, can boast that we have already reported it in the Vedas.

In this context I would like to draw the attention of my readers to read Soviet scientist Ya Perelman’s book ‘Astronomy for Entertainment’. He says what would happen if earth had no moon. It is very interesting. Perhaps that may explain our theory about Moon and plants.

Now we know why Hindus named both the mysterious herb and Moon with the same word SOMA!

PART TWO OF SOMA- A HALLUCINATIVE DRUG OR ELIXIR?

I POSTED THE FIRST PART HERE YESTERDAY COVERING 30 OUT OF 58 MANTARS IN THE RIGVEDIC HYMN 9-97 ON PAVAMANA SOMA.

EINSTEIN’S PHYSICS TELLS US THAT THE FASTEST OBJECT IN THE UNIVERSE IS LIGHT WHICH TRAVELS AT THE SPEED OF 1,86,000 MILES PER SECOND. ACCORDING TO PHYSICS, WE CAN NEVER REACH THIS SPEED AND THE MAXIMUM SPEED WE HAVE REACHED SO FAR  IS 3 LAKHS MILES PER HOUR (NOT SECOND). IF THERE IS A HUMAN BEING IN THE SPACE CRAFT THEN WE REACH ONLY 26,000 MILES PER HOUR. OUR NEAREST STAR IS 4-25 LIGHT YEARS AWAY. IT MEANS IF YOU HAVE A VEHICLE THAT TRAVELS AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT YOU CAN REACH THE STAR IN 4-25 YEARS.

BUT HINDUS IN THE RIG VEDA SAYS THE FASTEST IS ‘MIND’. BUT ONE MAY ASK CAN I TRAVEL IN THE ‘MIND VEHICLE’? ‘YES’ SAYS RIG VEDIC RISHIS/SEERS. THE MIND CHANGES A PERSON INTO LIGHT AND THEN YOU CAN TRAVEL A LOT MORE FASTER!  WE SEE THIS IN SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES OR TV SERIALS. SOMEONE APPEARS SUDDENLY IN THE FORM OF LIGHT FROM NOWHERE AND SAYS HE OR SHE IS FROM ANOTHER PALNET. THIS IS ACTUALLY FROM THE RIG VEDA. (We believe we can travel to any place in the universe by thought. Your thought will transfer your energy into light and again with the speed of thought you will be there in a fraction of a second. This is repeated umpteen times in Puranic mythology; Deva means light)

DARWIN SHOWED US THE EVOLUTION BEGAN IN WATER/ FISH. WE HAVE MATSYA/FISH AVATARA AS THE FIRST INCARNATION OF VISNHU. NOW RIG VEDA SAYS EVERY LIVING BEING CAME FROM WATER.

WE WILL LOOK AT THE LAST 28 MANTRAS IN THE HYMN RV.9-97. IT IS SUNG BY SEVERAL SEERS. ALL THE NAMES ARE IN THE INDEX OF RIG VEDA.

Soma Filter in Indus Valley seals

First let us discuss whether Einstein is right or Rig Vedic seers are right.

Einstein is PARTLY right in saying light is the fastest. But can we beat it with anything else?

‘Yes’ says the seers. They say Soma (plant) becomes light in one mantra. And in another mantra the rishis/ seers praise its speed as Thought Speed.

What we get from it is one can become light and travels faster than light.

Is it believable?

Yes. If I wanted to travel to the nearest star Proxima centauri, I use my thought and travel. You can also travel to New York from London in a second and comeback in the next second mentally.

But has anyone used it? Hindus use it every day at least three times a day. When a Brahmin does Gayatri mantra thrice a day he invites Gayatri from a faroff mountain and install her in his heart. When he finishes his prayer, he says ‘Good Bye, Mother! Please go back to your mountain abode’. She is nearer and farther to you!

A Hindu does a ceremony for departed souls over 90 times a year  called Tarpanam or Titi. He invokes the dead people from his father side and mother side. He asks them to come via sky path/route and sit on the Dharba grass spread in front of him. Throughout the Rig Veda we see the same method. All rishis invoke all gods on sacred Dharba grass!

When the TARPANAM OR TITI ceremony is over in 15 minutes or so, they address the departed souls ‘please go by your same sky route to your abode’.

This shows Hindus belief of bringing anyone from any far away place in a second in prayer. I do invoke my forefathers on sacred Dharba grass and invoke Goddess Gayatri thrice a day from her mountain abode. If you believe in it, you believe Einstein is only partly right. He doesn’t know the Mind speed, which is used from Rig Vedic days to Puranic days (Mano Veham).

Falcon in Indus Valley and Rigvedic Fire altar

NOW BACK TO HYMN 9-97

The race of cattle is your gift; when born you made Surya/ sun rich with brightness.

You are bright; you follow the Path of Order. You are Life Eternal.

You are a Heavenly Eagle; you look down from sky. You poured streams at the God’s Feast.

Our hymns and Trushtup songs unite in soma.

Flow for our welfare;

You generate abundance;

Singer of true songs;

Ever watchful;

He by whose dear help men gain all their wishes shall yield the precious ‘madhu’ to a victor.

Soma the bounteous helped us with his lustre.

Our ancient rishis who knew the foot steps found light and stole the cattle from the mountain.

(This is repeated hundreds of times. It may be that miserly merchants Pani/ Phoenicians stole and hid all their treasures in the mountain caves and Vedic Hindus got them back by fighting )

DARWIN THEORY OF EVOLUTION

In the first vault of heaven loud roared the Ocean, King of all being, Generating Creatures.

Soma , Child of Waters chose the Gods , performed that great achievement.

He gave strength to Indra and Generated  Light into Surya/ Sun

(then Varuna, Mitra, Vayu, Maruts , Heaven and Earth etc mentioned).

Gladden the gods; gladden the host of Maruts.

Make heaven and earth rejoice.

Upto 42/58 mantras are covered.

PLEASE READ THE ATTRIBUTES THE HINDU SEERS GIVE TO SOMA PLANT AND THE BENEFITS THEY TALK ABOUT IN THER MANTARS IN THE RIGVEDA. THEN YOU CAN EASILY DECIDE WHAT IT IS.

IT IS A SHAME THAT WE DON’T HAVE IT TODAY.  SOME HALF BAKED OR FULLY BAKED IDIOTS IDENTIFIED WITH X PLANT OR Y PLANT. HAD THEY REALLY KNOW THE PLANT THEY WOULD HAVE MADE BILLIONS OF DOLLLRS EVERY DAY BY CANNING AND SELLING IT.

I EVEN HAVE A SUSPICION THAT IT IS EQUAL TO AMRITA BECAUSE EAGLE-AMRITA STORY IN LAATER PURANAS IS IN THE RIG VEDA AS FALCON BRINGING IT FROM THE SKY OR MOUNTAIN.

FALACON, EAGLE AND HAWK ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE SOMA PLANT IN 20 TO 30 MANTRAS.

All he quoted Mantras are from the ninth mandala of the Rig Veda. This Mandala has 114 hymns with 1108 Mantras.

xxx

Here is what the seers say about the Soma Juice:– RV.9-97

You are a mighty SAGE

You are watchful

You are far seeing

You are wearing battle ready raiment.

Let us sing praises to gods loudly and send soma for mighty riches

He has come for our great bliss

You are nobler than the noblest

A prince among us

You preserve us evermore with blessings

Come here with the gods for bounty

You are roaring like a BOAR

The SWANS brought their restless spirit to our dwellings

Friends come and sing in concert praising Soma

Soma appears silvery in night and golden in day light.

Soma has sharp horns and brings forth abundance

Soma bathed in milk excites Indra and make him joyful; Indra slays the demons.

As soma is purified, he pours out treasurers

Soma is GOD and he sprinkles on other gods

Soma / Indu has wearing qualities by seasons

Soma , the RED BULL bellowing to the cattle advances, causing the heaven and earth to roar and thunder

Soma is sweet, meath rich plant

You send us good paths ; show us good path

Pour on us rain from the sky

Let it be healthy

Send us breeze

You are a friend of human beings

Unties me from the knots of sin.

Flow on with thousand streams and give us strength to conquer heroes

Soma flows like unyoked horses

May soma grant us riches sought with longing

Soma gives riches to generous people

Soma is very wise

He who beholds man kind

King supreme of deities and mortals

Treasure lord of riches

Soma is like a speedy HORSE

Give us ample food thousandfold

After you are purified, find out riches

Give us children who will be heroes and give us houses.

Rich in all boons, the best of cheerers

Make heaven and earth well established

You are swifter than thought

You are a LION

Sprung from the gods

You are forerunner of abundant riches

A wise king will not treat his friend unkindly

Like a son following his father’s wishes, grant to this family success and safety.

I have covered only 30 mantras out of 58 in this one hymn (RV 9-97).

FALCON/ HAWK MYSTERY IN THE RIG VEDA! (Post No.9993)

Two dozen foreigners commented on the Soma plant that is praised sky high in the Rig Veda ,the oldest book in the world. All of them have bluffed as much as possible with their hypotheses. They have proved themselves idiots by not answering the main questions. They showed them as ‘clever’ by comparing it with Haoma in the Zend Avesta. But for each of their guesses no evidence is given. All their statements contain ‘may be’, ‘probably’, ‘imaginary proto-proto-proto language’ etc.

What they missed the points or hiding is

1.Is there a culture who drank hallucinating drug at dawn, noon and evening? The Vedic seers clearly say that they prayed before sun rise and then two more times in a day.

2.If a society used a ‘hallucinating drug’ like this, would it survive? But Vedic culture survived and until today we see Vedic recitation of 20,000 mantras by heart.

3.How come they pray for 100 years life and grandchildren if it is a narcotic drug?

4.Why is no corresponding word in any Indo European language except the old Persian Haoma. We know H = S. But why is it that there are a few references even in the Avesta?

5.Avesta is proved to be later than the Rig Veda and why is not Soma mentioned in 2000 year old Sangam Tamil literature? Sangam Tamils  mention many Vedic rites including Yupa pillar, Rajasuyam, Eagle shaped fire altar etc?

6.If the foreigners have identified the plant , as many foreigners claim, why didn’t they produce it and patent it? They could have made billions of dollars every day like coca cola.

7.Above all why is that no one has explained the connection between the falcon/hawk and the Soma plant?

This is an article to show the mysterious connection between the Soma plant and falcon or hawk. This connection deepens the mystery of Soma plant. Foreigners cleverly evade this issue.

Syena and Suparna are used several times in the Rig Veda. They are translated into English as Falcon or hawk and Eagle. Later mythology makes Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu. Garuda Purana/mythology and Garuda Mantra are used aa antidote for poison and death.

The word Syena (falcon, hawk) alone is used in over 65 mantras in the Rig Veda.

xxxx

Here are some references:

In RV 1-32-14 Indra is compared to a falcon where a mysterious number 99 comes. Rigvedic Hindus were the first people to use decimal system in the world. In the 10,000 +++ Rig Vedic mantras we have hundreds of decimal numbers. But when they named Indra as Mr One Hundred (Satakratu), why did they use 99 in many places?

Here is the mantra

When you killed the snake demon Ahi, you crossed 99 rivers like a falcon? Were you afraid? if so, where from you would seek help?

The same seer named Mr Gold Pillar (Hiranya stupan) praises Indra as a falcon in the next hymn as well RV 1-33-2

I fly to Him (Indra), the invisible wealth giver, like falcon that returns to its nest (here the seer means he flies very fast like a home coming falcon towards Indra).

xxxx

Mysterious Soma RV 1-93-6

In the first five mantras they sing about Soma plant and then in the sixth Mantra Gautama Rahugana says:–

“One of you Matariswan brought from heaven, the Falcon rent the other from the mountain”.

Griffith in his foot note says,

Matarisvan brought Agni/Fire from heaven and Falcon brough Soma from the mountain or cloud, that is, says Sayana , from Svarga on top of Mount Meru.

xxx

Ode to Bird RV 2-42- 1,2,3

We read and praise Ode to Skylark by P B Shelley and Ode o Nightingale by John Keats. But this genre of ‘ode to birds’ began in the Rig Veda. Later Sangam Tamils also followed the Rig Vedic seers. But seer Grtsamada was the first one to sing a Ode to Kapinjala bird. That is the first hymn on Brid of Omen, which is seen in many other cultures in a late period.

Here the seer prays that neither the falcon nor an eagle should kill the Kapinjala bird

Xxx

In RV 3-43-7 Rishi Gathina Visvamitra sings

“Drink of the strong pressed out by strong ones, Indra that which the Falcon brought you when you wished”

Here falcon bringing Soma is referred to.

Xxx

I ate dog meat- Rishi Vamadeva

This is a very famous Mantra which even Manu refers to in his Smrti.

RV 4-18-13

Vamadeva Gautaman says

“In deep distress (poverty) I cooked a dog’s intestines. Among the Gods I found not one to comfort?

My wife I beheld in degradation. The Falcon then brought me the pleasant Soma”.

Here Indra is praised as falcon.

But falcon bringing Soma plant is repeated throughout the Rig Veda.

xxx

RV 4- 26 and 4-27

Both of these hymns praise falcon for bringing the Soma plants:–

“Before all birds he (Indra) ranked this bird, O Maruts; supreme of falcons be this fleet winged Falcon,

Because strong pinioned, with no car to bear him, he brought to Manu the God-loved oblation. (mantra 4-26-4)”

“When the Bird brought it , hence in rapid motion sent on the wide path fleet as thought he hurried

Swift he returned with the sweetness of the Soma and hence the Falcon acquired his glory”. (5)

(This is the reason for writing a Purana on Garuda)

“Bearing the stalk, the Falcon speeding onward, Bird bringing from afar the draught that gladdens,

Friend of the Gods, brought, grasping fast, the Soma which he had taken from yon loftiest heaven “(6)

“The falcon took and brought the Soma, bearing 1000 libations with him, yea, 10, 000.

The Bold One left Malignities behind him, wise, in wild joy of Soma, left the foolish. (7)”

Xxx

Vamadeva Gautama continues in 4-27

“As I lay within the womb, considered all generations of these Gods in order

A hundred iron fortresses confined me but forth I flew with rapid speed a Falcon (4-27-1)

(Note 100 Iron Forts; Has Indus valley got ‘Iron’ Forts?)

“When with loud cry from heaven down sped the Falcon, then hasting like the wind he bore the Bold One.

Then, wildly raging in his mind, the archer Krssanu aimed and loosed the string to strike him (3)

The Falcon bore him from heaven’s lofty summit as the swift car of Indra’s Friend bore Bhujyu

Then downward hither fell a flying feather of the Bird hasting forward in his journey (4)

The mystery of falcon’s connection to Soma or hawk goes beyond fourth Mandala. I have given examples only from the first four mandalas. There are over 65 references for Syena alone. I will deal with Suparna (Eagle, Garuda) separately.

My conclusion

The Falcon’s link to Soma is not explained by anyone satisfactorily. This mystery continues in Garuda Purana, where Garuda bringing Amrita instead of Soma.

Soma is a not a narcotic drug. No drug addict will waste it by pouring into fire three times day. If it is a rare and expensive  drug they would have consumed it gladly and that degraded society would have died by this time.

More over the drug addicts don’t need to spread cut Dharbaa grass in an orderly fshin before Fire and invoke Gods to drink it. We see the violence and suicides that follow the addicts of drug or drinking in the Western Society. On the contrary, the Vedic seers who drank Soma elixir lived 100 years singing the Glory of God.

Long Live Soma Elixir.

Biggest Loss of the Hindus- Wonderful Soma Plant! (Post No.4009)

Most wonderful herb in the world is the Soma herb. Hindus must rediscover the Soma plant; it must be somewhere in the Himalayas or beyond the Himalayan Mountains. The whole ninth Mandala of the Rig Veda and the later literature praise it sky high. It has got miraculous effects. Had it been a narcotic drug, Hindus would have replaced it with opium or similar drugs. Had it been identified, foreigners would have made billions of dollars, by bottling the juice for sale. Vedic Hindus knew it; but in the modern times, It is not identified yet and it is not found yet. So Hindus must rediscover it through serious research.

Parsees also praised Soma plant in Zend Avesta. It is unique to Indian sub continent. Since Zoroaster migrated from Saurashtra region of Gujarat, he knew the miraculous properties of the Soma plant (See Kanchi Shankaracharya’s lecture on Zoroaster)

Here is the gist of Ninth Mandala of Rig Veda where 114 hymns praise the Soma herb.

Immortality

The juice of the plant is an immortal draught, which the gods love. Soma, the god in the juice, is said to clothe the naked and heal the sick, though him the blind see, and the lame walk. Many other divine attributes are ascribed to him. He is addressed as a god in the highest strains of veneration. All powers belong to him; all blessings are besought of him as his to bestow.

He is said to be divine, immortal and to confer immortality on gods and men. Future happiness is asked from him:

“Place me Oh, Pavamana, in that ever lasting and imperishable world where there is eternal light and glory” -RV 9-113-7

Gave God Like Powers

Soma sharpened the sense. Gods, men and angels enjoyed it, especially Indra and Maruts, Yama and the Pitrs/ancestors (This mantra shows it is not alcoholic drink because gods and ancestors are included). The potent juice of the Soma plant which endowed the feeble mortal with god-like powers.

The gods bought soma in the eastern direction. Thence he is generally bought in the eastern direction.

Number 17

The Adhvaryu priest draws 17 cups of Soma plant and the Nesthri 17 cups of Sura (alcohol), for to Prajapati belong these two plants, to wit the Soma and Sura – and of these two the Soma is TRUTH, PROSPERITY, LIGHT and the Sura is untruth, misery, darkness.

(This Satapata Brahmana mantra explains the bad effect of alcohol and the good effects of Soma- SB 5-1-2-10/14)

Girl and Soma

There are many symbolic stories about Soma which confused and baffled the foreigners; they started blabbering like drunkards when they read these passages!

“King Soma lived among the Gandharvas. The gods and rishis (seers) deliberated as to how the king might be induced to return to them. Vach—the goddess of the speech said—The Ganharvas lust after women. I shall therefore transform myself in to a woman and then you will sell me to them in exchange d for Soma (Aitareya Brahmana)

In the Taittiriya Brahmana, Vach is turned into a woman one year old, and induced to come back again by singing, and hence women love a man who sings”

The meaning is those who have lust cannot have Soma.

Such symbolic stories made the foreigners crazy and stated writing rubbish. Their Vedic translations have become a big Joke Book now!

Satapata Brahmana says (3-2-41)

Soma formerly lived in the sky, whilst the gods were on earth. They desired to get it that they employ it in sacrifice. The Gayatri flew to bring it to them (Gayatri is the most powerful mantra found in all the four Vedas, which was discovered by a Non Brahmin; Brahmins recite it three times a day until today). While she was carrying it off, the Gandharva Vibhanasu robbed her of it. The gods became aware of it and knowing the partiality of the Gandharvas for females, they sent a Vach (Word) to get it from them and the word succeeded in doing it.

There are hundreds of pages with symbolic mantras like it about Soma. No where in the world a narcotic drug is treated like this. If it is a drug they would have consumed it and the race would have perished. But Vedic civilization is alive today! That is the only civilization alive today from among the ancient civilizations!!

Fragrant Flowers!

The Soma is a creeping plant, with small white fragrant flowers. It yields a milky juice, which is filtered and mixed with milk. While they press the plants for juice, they recite mantras. They sing the praise of it and pour it in the sacrificial fire. They even named the different vessels and spoons in the Soma sacrifice.

Various accounts are given of the way in which the Soma plant was obtained. Soma plant is brought from the mountains by an eagle, says the scriptures. Some passages say it is with the Gandharvas. Other passages say it is brought from a mountain by sellers. Foreigners bluffed about these things without understanding the hidden meaning.

When Soma was brought to the gods, there was a dispute  as to who should have the first draught. It was decided that a race should be run.; the winner to have first taste. Vayu first reached the goal, Indra came second

Soma juice purifies the mind, says a Tamil inscription. Soma Yaga performers were gifted with a white umbrella meaning that person is equal to a king; in those days, only kings and gods can have white umbrella. White umbrella stands for purity, authority and intelligence.

Soma also meant Moon. Hindus only connect plants with the moon. Future research will establish this fact and the Hindus would get the credit. So far only sun is linked with the plants because it helps them in photosynthesis.
