Points to be noted:

Valluvar Copied Manu Smritis verbatim in Kural 396

yathā khanan khanitreṇa naro vāryadhigacchati |
tathā gurugatāṃ vidyāṃ śuśrūṣuradhigacchati ||2- 218 ||

Just as a man digging with the spade obtains water, even so one who is eager to serve acquires the learning that is in the Teacher.—(2-218)

**

Valluvar copied Bhagavad Gita Again!

tatra taṁ buddhi-sanyogaṁ labhate paurva-dehikam

yatate cha tato bhūyaḥ sansiddhau kuru-nandana

O son of the Kurus! In this lifetime, he embarks on his journey towards ultimate perfection, drawing upon the knowledge acquired in his previous lives.(BG 6-43)

Kural 368 talks about Seven Births and all the translators are faithful to the original. Once earned in one birth one can improve upon it in consecutive births. This is the reason for some children appearing with high IQ.

Kalidasa also talks about Purva Janma Knowledge:

sa pūrvajanmāntaradṛṣṭapārāḥ

smarannivākleśakaro gurūṇām |

tisrastrivargādhigamasya mūlam

jagrāha vidyāḥ prakṛtīśca pitryāḥ || 18-50 Raghuvamsa

Raghuvamsa Canto 18, Verse 50, composed by Kalidasa, describes the effortless education and wisdom of a prince from the Solar Dynasty. The verse illustrates that the prince mastered core sciences without causing strain to his teachers, appearing to merely recollect knowledge from past lives before taking charge of his father’s kingdom.

**

Numbers and Letters in Kural 392 are in Pali and Sanskrit books too as Ganana and lekha.

**

We have finished the first part on Dharma (Aram) and now moving on to second part on Wealth (Porul)

74Purananuru wonders-74, Tamil Encyclopaedia 114, One Thousand Interesting Facts -Part 114

Let us take one more book from Ten Idylls; it is called Madurai Kanchi (maduraik kaanchi).

Mangudi maruthan (maangudi maruthan) composed it and it is the longest book in the Ten Idylls, called Paththup Paattu.

(don’t confuse it with Pathitrup pathththu, Ten Times Ten, part of Eight Anthologies, called Ettuth Thokai).

This longest poem with 782 lines praises  Madurai city and its king Nedunchezian. He is the second Pandya king with the same name, ruled Madurai in second century CE.

item 979- boy king- and a poet

Nedunchezian became a king when he was a teenager. And the Chera and Choza kings, taking advantage of it, invaded Pandya kingdom. But Pandya king gained a brilliant victory over these great kings at a place called Thalaialanganam  (Thalali Aalankaanam). Modern-day Thalaiyalangadu, located about 15–18 km northwest of Thiruvarur on the Kumbakonam–Thiruvarur road in Tamil Nadu.

Nedunchezhian defeated a massive allied coalition consisting of the Chera king (Maanthrancheral), the Chola king (Cholan Perunarkilli), and five minor or confederate kings who underestimated him because of his youth.

In my research I have compared him with a king in Thiru vilayadal puranam who took power after his father Veera Pandya was killed by a tiger.

The poem has two words in the title: Madurai and Kanchi; Kaanchi here means a genre in which the instability of life is mentioned. This means that the king should remember it and do good things in his life. So the poem is partly didactic. Poet reminds this by quoting what Nedunchezian’s forefathers did.

Nedunchezian was himself a poet. His poem is in Purananuru.

item 980- Sun, Moon, Stars, Rain, Honey

The long poem begins with auspicious words. In Tamil and Sanskrit, the poem must with auspicious words according to o the ancient convention. Here we see sun, moon, stars, rain and sweet honey in the first ten lines. We see such beginning in post Sangam Tamil epic Silappdikaram as well.

item 981- Thennavan Controversy- lines 40/42

Picture: Ravana threatening Sita.

Literally translated ancient god, the southern man

Two words ancient god and Tennavan are interpreted differently. Many agree that ancient God is Siva but Tennavan is interpreted as Ravana, demon King of Sri Lanka. According to the most famous commentator Nachcinarkiniyar, it is the story about Agastya, the great Rishi/sage and the Tennavan (Southern Man) is Ravana. He quoted previous  commentator Ilampuranar and said this. Tennavan may mean Pandya, who rules the southern most part of India, or Yama, the God of Death in the South or Ravana. In short, it is an obscure passage. But from this interpretation we get a story of Pandya who kept Ravana away from Tamil Nadu. Nacchinarkiniyar believed that Tamil Kings ruled Tamil Land during Ramayana times. Elsewhere Nacchi. gave us valuable information of Agastya bringing 18 clans of Velirs from North India to Tamil Nadu. His story and most famous poet Kapilar’s reference to 49 generations in a Purananuru verse confirmed that this land was ruled by kings at least 1500 years before Kapilar! And Kapilar lived at least 2000 years ago.

Nacchi. Is not the first one to interprete Rishi as God. We have more proofs to say Rishis/Sages are gods in Kali 93-11, Silampu.11-5, Seevaka Chintamani.96, 1124 and in Periya Alvar poems

Nacchi. gives more information about the Ravana- Pandya peace agreement in another place. U Ve Sa. added later day references about the Veena competition between Agastya and Ravana. ( I have given the details in my articles in this blog)

***

item 982- gory metaphor-lines 24-42

Here the poet described what happened in the battlefield. The female ghosts danced and drank the blood of dead elephants.

The corpses rose and danced with them.

Oven/ hearth was made with the heads of dead kings; an expert demon cooked and boiled the blood of dead kings, stirred it with ladles made up of dead soldiers’ hands.

She served the cooked food to strong victorious brave warriors.

It reminds us of Mayans of South America and Gond Tribals of Middle India who did ceremonial human sacrifices.

No wonder Draupadi wanted Duryodana’s blood as hair oil for her dishevelled hair!

**

item 983-  Paddy Town- Tall Ships- lines 75-88

The poet gives good information of the king capturing a port named after rice (saaliyur), where large ships with tall masts are anchored.

Researchers say that it is Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. Here we get information about ships that bring gold from foreign countries.

The king won many places between Himalayas and Kanyakumari.

Though Tamils boast of such victories we have no historical records of such victories!

On the contrary we have Guptas defeating southern kings, Kharavela defeating southern kings from their inscriptions!

lines 119-130 described his victory at Thalai Aaalankaanam.

He defeated Chera, Choza Kings and five chieftains. Also Paratavar (fishermen) in the South.

***

item 984-  line 108- Venus again!

Hindus, particularly Tamil Hindus of Sangam age, mentioned that even if Venus travels in wrong direction, rain will never fail in the land of a just king. We have following references in Purananuru.

Someone must go through astronomical records to find out the relation between Venus and drought

***

Item 985- Destruction is justified- lines 125- 147

The reason for the disappearance of historical records, historical buildings is the utter destruction of enemy lands carried out by victorious king. This is justified by Sangam poets and Tolkappiar.

Pandya king stayed for years in enemy land. Before that he burnt down the entire town. Plundering the enemy towns also was justified.

The booty was distributed to soldiers and bards.

For the arson and robbery, commentators quoted Tolkappiyam Puraththinai Sutras 8 and 12.

item 986-  Moon Worship in Lines 193-196

Hindus worship Crescent moon. They make it a point to view it on the third day crescent moon after Amavasyai (new moon day).

This means two things: 1. The growing moon signifies positive things and growth and development and 2. It reminds Hindus Lord Siva who sports a crescent moon on his head.

Crescent moon worship is many Kuruntokai verses as well. Kuru.178, 307; Akam.239. Silampu.4-22;

In the same way, Hindus worship moon on the fourth day after full moon day (Pournami or Purnima). They fast on the whole day on Sankatahara Chaturthy (fourth day in Krishnapaksha) and eat light food after viewing the crescent moon. This is to propitiate Lord Ganesh.

***

item 987- Amrita- nectar of God- lines 197-201

Tamils were great Hindus and they mastered Hindu Puranas. From Sangam literature to later Tirukkural we come across Amrita of Devas in umpteen places. Here the poet says that even if the heaven with Amrita was offered to him he wont tell a lie. Even if the army including one from heaven come against him, he wont be scared.

***

988- Wealth of Demon Vanan- lines 202-204

Even if you are offered the great

wealth of Vānan, stored in the southern

mountains, you will reject it, if it comes with

blame.

We don’t have any information about demon Vanan’s wealth . We read about Ilvala’s wealth and Mahabali’s wealth in the Puranas.

One Banasura is in the story of Krishna’s son Anirudh. But we don’t know anything about the wealthy Vana/Bana in the south.

Even U Ve Sa. Skipped it saying nothing!

***

989 Description of Madurai City and horse import- line 321-23

The poet described all kinds of landscapes and when he portrayed the coastal area, he mentions import and export.

Horse import is specifically mentioned. Immediately we are reminded of Manikkavasagar’s journey to buy horses.

***

990- line 319 and 375 – panai meen – whale or dolphin- SHIP WRECK

In line we come across THIMILAR for fishermen. Thimingilam in Tamil means whale. So I guess they mean whale hunters. You need special kills to do it.

Tamils have a separate word for sharks. In line 375 the poet used PANAIMEEN AND THE SCENE OF A SHIP WRECK.

These lines 375-380 show whales in the mid sea . Tamil scholar U Ve Sa. ‘s cross references from later books mentioned the very word THIMINGILAM= WHALE.

Kalidasa also mentioned whales. It shows that whales were near Indian coasts 2000 years ago.

To be continued……………………………..

• பெற்றோர்: மாறன்காரியார், உடையநங்கை.• வேறு பெயர்கள்: மாறன், சடகோபன், பராங்குசன்;

• பொருள்: நான்கு குலங்களுக்குள்ளும் அடங்காமல், அவற்றிற்கும் கீழே தாழ்ந்தவர்களாகவும், எந்தவித நற்பண்புகளும் இல்லாதவர்களாகக் கருதப்படுபவர்களாகவும் இருந்தாலும் சரி;

Pathitrup patththu , the Sangam Tamil Book called Ten Times Ten, finished with a beautiful wish! The poet wished the Chera King to live Vellam number of years! And he said it in a beautiful way. Please go to the end to get the full details.

73Purananuru wonders-73, Tamil Encyclopaedia 113, One Thousand Interesting Facts -Part 113

Item 971 -White herons flying in black clouded Sky! Lines 83/5

Here is beautiful description of dark sky with black clouds and the white water birds are flying which is compared to chariots flying with white flags  along with black elephants. Unless the poet saw in real the march of the king, he could not describe it in this way.

Because famous saint Ramakrishna Paramahmsar’s life also has such a scenery! One day Sri RKP as a boy was walking in the pathway of a beautiful green paddy field with his friends. In the sky white storks were flying in the background of dark clouds. Immediately he thought of God’s beautiful creation and attained Samadhi ; friends thought he became unconscious for unknown cause. RKP recovered (came out of Samadhi) after a few days. His life shows many such incidents.

Our poet also never missed the beautiful scene but compared it to King’s march with his battalion.

In lines 84-1/7,  we see King riding in his golden chariot. No wonder he did because we saw earlier, he distributed Gold Bars even to his soldiers.

And the poet one more simile; Chera King’s enemies were broken like the bamboos under the elephnats! Lines 84-8/14

***

Item 972- Kudos to Brahmin Poet Kapilan

Only one Sangam poet got highest praise in Sangam Age; that was Kapilan, who contributed highest number of poems. Here the poet praised hi in lines 85-10/13.

When our poet Perunkundrūr Kizhār praised Ilanchēral Irumporai’s victory over Choza king , he said that the Choza soldiers dropped their spears and surrendered. But the number of spears were more than the towns gifted to Kapilar by this king’s ancestor Selvak Kandunko.

We could notice that the poet was so clever that he praised three people at the same time!

***

Item 973- Rare Reference to Vindhya Mountain Chain and Goddess! Lines 88-1/5

Himalaya is praised by many Sangam Tamil poets, but rarely the Vindhyas. Though Tamils knew that sage Agastya laid road route for the first time through the mountain chain Vindhya, it is rarely mentioned in the Sangam poems. Here Perunkundrūr Kizhār mentioned it as the place where Goddess Durga resides. Even today people visit Vinghyavasini /Durga temple, 72 kilometres from Kasi ,near the Vindhyachal railways station in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh

Item 974- Arundhati Star helps you to see your Life Span! Lines 89-18/20

In this Pathitrup Paththu book we saw Arundhati star earlier. During the first night on a wedding day Hindu couple are shown Arundhati Star in Ursa Major/ Sapta Rishi constellation This is to insist the chastity of the bride and the constant support of her husband to her. Because the Vasistha- Arundhati stars are part of a double star system, one revolving another. So, husband and wife should be so close like those two stars. But our poet adds some new information. It is used to find one’s life span. If you are able to see it despite your old age, you will live longer. The science behind it is very simple; if you have good eye sight you will be able to watch Arunhati star!

Our poet compared Chera king’s chaste wife to the star and added the epithet “the star which shows one’s life span”.  In short if you see it brighter and easily, you will live long!

Among Hindus there is another belief if one s not able to see his own face in the mirror, he may die soon. We can easily understand the meaning. If one’s eyesight suddenly deteriorates and becomes very poor, his life is short.

***

Item 975- let the day become a week; week become a month…..

Poet finished his poem with a beautiful wis. He wished the king to live for ever and he said :

May each day of your life
be long like a month!  May each month become long like a year!  May
each year become long like a lifetime of the earth!  May each lifetime
of the earth become as long as the vellam number of years as their
limit! –Lines 90-51/57

WHAT IS VELLAM?

IT IS A BIG NUMBER.IT IS LIKE Googolplex!

OLD COMMENTARY SAYS MANY AEONS OR ERAS MAKE ONE VELLAM.

What a wonderful Birthday Greeting!

Item  976- you are Sea and Moon

You are like water since you have kindness in your heart;
you are like the vast sky since your intellect is immeasurable;
you are like the abundant ocean since you donate endless
gifts; you are like the moon amidst many stars.  When you are
with your flourishing relatives, you are the most splendid of
your clan. –Lines 90-14/20

***

Item  977- soldiers speak different languages in your army!

You are a Warrior King who is in the midst
of soldiers speaking in different tongues in your battle camp
filled with velai vines with white flowers, mixed with bottle
gourd creepers.

It looks like many different language speakers were recruited by the Chera King!

***

Item 978- Decorated Horse!

You ride your leaping horse
decorated with a lovely yak-tail fan on its head and star-like
bright bells on its saddle, wielding spears that you throw at your
enemies with desire, causing them sorrow.

Here we finish the Pathirup paththu. The tenth part is missing; we lost the first part and tenth part.

God King in Egypt

We have finished the first part on Dharma (Aram) and now moving on to second part on Wealth (Porul)

Points to be noted:

Valluvar used Sanskrit style: these four, these six, these three etc

**

The first Kural is a copy of Kanantakam 4-1:

Sloka 4.1 of the Kamandakiya Nitisara defines the Saptanga, outlining the seven essential components of a sovereign state: the ruler, minister, territory, fort, treasury, army, and allies. Heavily inspired by Kautilya’s Arthashastra, this verse presents the state as an organic system whose survival and prosperity rely on the wisdom and moral strength of its leadership. Including the King it makes 7.

**

VALLUVAR GAVE GOD’S STATUS TO KING FOLLOWING MANU SMRITI: And Egypt and Rome copied Hindus!

yasmādeṣāṃ surendrāṇāṃ mātrābhyo nirmito nṛpaḥ |
tasmādabhibhavatyeṣa sarvabhūtāni tejasā || 7-5 ||

In as much as the King was created with the constituent elements of these principal Gods, he surpasses all living beings by his glory (7-5)

• Divine Origin: This verse builds directly upon Verse 4, which states that the creator formed a king by extracting eternal, essential particles from eight primary deities (Dikpalas): Indra, Vayu (Wind), Yama, Surya (Sun), Agni (Fire), Varuna, Chandra (Moon), and Kubera (Wealth).

• The Concept of Tejas: Because the king is a composite of these divine energies, he possesses an inherent, extraordinary potency or radiance (tejas)

**

British National Anthem

·         God save our gracious King!

·         Long live our noble King!

·         God save the King!

·         Send him victorious,

·         Happy and glorious,

·         Long to reign over us,

·         God save the King.

·

Japanese think King is the God

Koke no musu made

May your reign

Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations,

Until the tiny pebbles
