A Story about Mountain of Worries!

“Distance lends enchantment to the view” is the English saying and the equivalent proverbs exist in almost all the languages in the world. In Tamil “Ikkaraikku Akkarai Pachai” = The cow on one side of the river thinks the other side is greener. There is another saying in Tamil meaning “Green at a distance is cool to the eyes.”

There is a story told by Swami Ramdas to illustrate this proverb/saying.

There was a time when discontent seized the souls of men in the world to such an extent that they unitedly raised a wail to the throne of God for relief. Everyman, dissatisfied with his own lot, felt he would gladly exchange places with his neighbour.

God heard their cry and appeared before them. All the aggrieved people assembled around Him on a vast plain. God now said, “O men, in response to your prayers, I have come here. I give each of you power to throw down on this plain the particular disability or the woe which is the cause of your discomfort and misery.”

At once, in hot haste, all he people divested themselves of their burdens of sorrow and flung them on the plain. The accumulated heap of woes formed a veritable mountain. “Now, O men,” exclaimed God, “You may pick up from this heap any burden which you prefer in exchange for the one you have given up.”

29VZMP_PAPIKONDALU_2294921g

Immediately, there was a furious scramble and each man grabbed the burden of woe belonging to his neighbour. The blind man exchanged his blindness for a broken leg vice versa. The poor man exchanged his state with the man of riches. The barren women became fruitful and vice versa – so on and so forth. Thus in a short time, the mountain of worries disappeared. All the people felt for the moment happy and relieved. God left them and they returned to their homes.

What happened the next day? Louder lamentations, a hundred times more than what it was the day before, rose from the people. God again presented Himself before them. Now all the people cried out “ O Lord, give me back my own woe, for I cannot endure the pains and grief which I have taken in exchange.” God granted their prayer and they returned perfectly satisfied.

‘THE MUSLIM EPOCH’ ‘என்ற நூலை எழுதியுள்ள J.D.REES I.C.S தனது நூலில் இரண்டாவது அத்தியாயமாக ‘THE HOUSE OF GHAZNI (1001-1030) என்ற அத்தியாயத்தில் கொள்ளை அடித்த விவரங்களை “ஒரு சிறிது” குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.

The greatness of this may be inferred from the fact that it is said to have contained 30,000 shops for the sale of betel-nut, as who would say there are 30,000 tobacconists’ shops in London!

The wealth and sanctity of Muttra (Mathura), a city on the Jumna, north   of Agra, next marked it out for attack. Its idols were broken, and the temple was spared only because of its exceeding solidity. The Sultan wrote to his governor of Ghazni, “Here are a thousand edifices as firm as the faith of the faithful, mostly of marble, besides innumerable temples. Such other could not be constructed under two centuries. The Raja of Mahaban, seeing his people massacred and driven into the river, made away with his family and with himself, while the Rajputs of the garrison of another city he attacked, burned themselves and their wives and children. The plunder of this expedition is estimated at £ 416,000, besides 5300 captives, and 350 elephants, excluding the ruby eyes of idols and their necklaces of pearls and sapphires.

What can a Parrot Teach You?

There is a proverb in Sanskrit, “Bandanamaayaanti sukaah, yatheshta sanchaarinah Kaakaah”.

“The crows are flying freely, the parrots are caged”.

There is an equivalent proverb in Tamil, “It is the fruit laden tree that gets most hits (by stones).

The message is “if you have anything in excess, you are abused. In the olden days the talented poets were “slaves” of the kings. Very often there were conflicts between the kings and the scholars and they left the country in anger. We have plenty of stories in our literature.

parrot 3

Women are compared to parrots because of their beauty and sweet voice. A most beautiful woman was also a security risk. Alauddin Khilji wanted to take Chittoor Rani Padmini, the most beautiful Rajput princess, but she entered fire with her retinue before she was molested by the Muslim invaders.

Parrots were caged because of their ability of mimicry and its beauty.

Even brides are compared to parrots. Whenever a bride is married to an unsuitable man, then they used to say, Is it right to rear a parrot and then leave it to the claws of a cat? (Tamil Proverb)

parrot 6

Parrot and a Cheat

A merchant bought a parrot and taught the words NO DOUBT ABOUT IT to it. He used to prepare everything in advance to suit the answer ‘ no about it’ and then ask the question. One day he dug the ground and then buried some god coins without anybody’s knowledge. Then he called everyone and said that his parrot can even find treasures buried under the ground. He took the parrot to the place where he buried the gold coins and asked the question: “ Is there a treasure under the ground?” The parrot screeched “No doubt about it”. To the amazement of everyone he dug up the ground and took 1000 gold coins and showed to everyone.

A greedy person approached the merchant and bought the parrot for a higher price. He took it to some place where everyone  said that an old treasure has been there for a very long time. He asked the parrot, “Is there a reassure buried under the ground here?” The parrot said ,”No doubt about it”. He dug up the ground and nothing was there. The parrot repeated the words every time he asked the question. So he brought more men and dug up the ground deeper and deeper. At last he was disappointed. He shouted in anger, “Are you fooling me? Did you put dirt into my mouth?”

The parrot repeated the same words: No doubt about it.

Then only he realised that he was fooled by the merchant who sold the parrot to him.

No doubt, he sold it to another fool.

Tamil poets and saints used to sing apostrophes to birds and one of them is parrot.

mirror-parrot

Following two Stories are from my old articles:

Parrot and Mirror

The method by which a parrot is taught to speak is unique. The trainer places a big mirror in front of the newly caught parrot and talks to it from behind the mirror. The parrot thinks that another parrot is teaching it to talk and imitates the voice of the trainer. Trained in this manner, the parrot, picking up the language of the trainer, begins to talk fluently in the human language.

This is how a saint teaches his disciples. Apparently it is human being who is instructing them, but, verily, it is God hidden in the Guru that gives illuminating advice to the disciples. So, whenever the aspirant receives instructions from the Guru, he should consider that such instructions come from God himself. Truly, God and Guru are one.

Freedom is the Goal

In a war in Europe, a sailor was captured by the enemy and was put into prison. After fifteen years he was released, as the warring countries contracted an alliance through a treaty. On the day of release, a friend placed in his hands a purse containing £50/- When the sailor was passing through the streets, he saw a shop in which he saw various species of birds in cages kept for sale. He went up to the shop and bought all the cages from the money he possessed and, by opening the trap doors of the cages, set free the imprisoned birds one by one. The shop man was astounded at this. He asked why the sailor having bought the birds at such high prices, released them all.

caged-parrots2

The sailor replied, “You see, I alone know what it is to be in prison, being denied the privilege of freedom. For fifteen years I have suffered prison life. I could not bear to see these birds unhappy in their cages”.

Similarly, a saint having attained spiritual liberation himself is eager to release others from the bondage of ignorance.

Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University and British Museum in London hold over 1000 year old Nava Graha statues and dolls with the details of their provenance. Navagrahas are worshipped by Hindus until today. All the South Indian temples have special enclave for the Nine Planetary Deities. Sani or Saturn is the most sought after deity because every Hindu who believes in astrology is scared of the evil influence of the planet. Every Tamil Nadu temple gets a big crowd in the Navagraha shrine, particularly on saturdays.

Hindu Brahmins offer water oblations to Navagrahas thrice a day in their Sandhya vandhana. So it must be a deep rooted Vedic custom. Tamil saint Sambandhar sang about it in seventh century. He starts from Sun and finishes with Saturn in his Thevaram hymn. Some scholars wrote that this nine planetary system was imported from Greece which is not correct. None could have squeezed it into Vedic custom or Thevara Hymns.  More over Varahamihira who dealt with it  in his Brahat Jataka and Brhat Samhita says that he has been just summarising what his forefathers or scholars of eternity wrote in bulky volumes.

Hindus have incorporated their scientific knowledge into the hymns of hymns on Navargraha. I have already given it in my articles. Just a recap of important points from my previous article “ Hindus’ Future Predictions part 1 and 2 posted on May 20, 2012:

Venus and Rain: Tamil literature and Sanskrit literature associate Venus with the rains. Astronomers and meteorologists will discover that Venus has a link with the rains in future. If Venus goes towards south, the world will have a drought (going south is an astrological jargon to denote appearing towards south). The Vedas and Tamil literature talk about twelve year long droughts. So the scientists will find out that the position of Venus has an impact on world’s weather.

We know that the sun has a big role in the growth of plants. We read plants make food by photosynthesis using sun light. But Sanskrit literature is very clear and loud in saying moon’s rays give energy to the plants. So biologists will find out soon the link between the moon and the plants. But Hindus never denied Sun’s role.

Sanskrit Navagraha Stotras (hymns on nine heavenly bodies) gives the relationship between the planets. Hindus have already found out that Jupiter is the largest and heaviest planet and named it GURU appropriately. Guru means leader, teacher and heavy in Sanskrit. Mars is called Red planet by Tamil and Sanskrit poets. Mars is already confirmed red by scientists. Mars is called Bhumi Puthra/ son of earth. Scientists also believe Mars may have water and life.

Saturn is called a black planet by Sangam Tamil poets and Sanskrit poets (Maim meen in Tamil and Neela in Sanskrit). Saturn will be confirmed black by scientists in future. It is also called chaya puthra (son of shadow as well as son of sun). Hindus said that Saturn has a son called Manthi. It corresponds to the ring (Mantle) around it.

Planet Mercury is called “son of moon”. Science is yet to prove the link between the two heavenly bodies. Probably mercury came into existence because of moon. When moon or/ and another body collided with earth mercury might have born. Science will prove  Hindus are right about mercury .

Venus is described as the “son of sun”. Scientists will prove the link between the sun and Venus. We already know that Venus is the brightest object in the sky next to sun and moon. It is always with the sun (it can be seen either at dawn or at sunset).
