Parasurama or parshura

Parasurama was born as a Brahmana, but he developed all the traits of a Kshatriya. He became a fearless warrior and destroyed 21 Kshatriya kings; at last he was defeated by Rama. He was the youngest of the five sons of Jamadagni and Renuka. He was a very honest and obedient youth. Once Jamadagni noticing that Renuka had entertained impure thoughts in her mind, ordered his sons to kill their mother. The older four boys could not do this and Jamadagni at once ordained that they fall dead. Then came the turn of Parasurama and he obediently beheaded his mother. Being pleased with his son, Jamadagni asked him what boon he wanted. Parasurama urged that his mother and four brothers be revived and that they do not recall anything about this ordeal. This wish was granted.

Once Parasurama came to know that that king Kartavirya had forcibly taken away his father’s cow.  In anger he ran after the king and killed him. Later king Kartavirya’s sons killed Jamadagni when he was alone.  At once Parasurama went after them and killed all of them along with others who came to help them. His hatred towards Kshatriyas increased and he killed Kshatriyas 21 times. When his rage finally burnt out, he gave away all his possessions and went to the forest.

There must be more than one Parasurama because in two other episodes in Mahabharata he had figured;  he fought with Bhisma at the request of princess Amba and they laid down their arms when their fight finished in a draw. In another episode, he caught Karna red-handed when he came to learn the weapons under the guise of a Brahmana

Rama’s meeting with Parasurama is described vividly in Raghuvamsa of Kalidasa. A bit confusing chronology unless we conclude that there were many Parasuramas.

Pasupati

Paśupati (पशुपति) refers to the “Lord of Paśus (animals)” and is used to describe Śiva, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.5.9 (“Śiva’s campaign”).—Accordingly, as Śiva became the lord of the Paśus: “On hearing these words of lord Śiva, the great soul, Viṣhṇu, Brahmā and other gods said.—‘So be it’. Hence all the gods and Asuras became the animals of the lord. Śiva became the lord of animals (paśupati). He is the person who unties the nooses of the animals. Then the name Paśupati, that bestows welfare, spread in all the worlds and became renowned. Then the celestial sages, Indra, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and others rejoiced shouting—‘Victory’.

Two interesting points are to be noted in this chapter 14. Couplet 134 insists the character only for Brahmins, not for others! Even Buddha, in the last chapter of Dhammapada, speaks only about Brahmins. Earlier he said that a Brahmin can do murder or topple a government and there is nothing wrong in it; no sin will occur to him; but in the last chapter Buddha stressed the character or right conduct for Brahmins like Manu Smriti. That shows they expected too much from Brahmins only, because they were given high position or highest status. Tamil Tolkappiam also said Brahmins can (only) act as ambassadors. Madhavi sent letter only though a Brahmin in Silappadikaram; Brahmin Madala Maraiyon was the link or backbone in Silappadikaram. In Nala Damyanti story too, Damayanti’s father sends Brahmins to find out Nala.

Another point is two Sanskrit worlds Kuti and Loka used by Valluvar.

The last Kural is similar to Do in Rome as Romans do.

Iravatham Mahadevan who traces Akathiyar from the Dravidian Indus Valley Civilization to the South, quotes M. Raghava Iyengar’s interpretation of the word தடவு as ‘sacrificial vessel’ in the latter’s book வேளிர் வரலாறு.  He adds, “Even he missed the obvious connection between Akathiyar and his inseparable water pitcher”.  He adds further, “The word tadavu (variant taṭa, தட) means a ‘big clay pot’ (DEDR 3027) etymologically related to taṭa (தட) ‘thick, large’ (DEDR 3020).  The matter has now been put beyond doubt as the word tada occurs in a Thamizh -Brahmi inscription (ca.2nd cen l. BCE) incised on a broken storage jar excavated at Kodumanal, Thamizh Nadu.  The fragmentary inscription reads ‘earthen jar storing (?) cold (and) hot water’.  The word tatavu ‘jar’ is also attested in Thamizh literature. It occurs twice in a poem in Nācciyār Tirumoḻi; (9:6), assigned to ca. 8th cent. CE: nūru taṭāvil veṇṇey (நூறு தடாவில் வெண்ணெய்) – ‘a hundred jars of butter’; nūru taṭā niṟaintha akkāra adicil (நூறு தடா நிறைந்த அக்கார அடிசில்) – ‘a hundred jars of sweet morsel’”.

(Mark Spalding).

PICTURE OF BUDDHIST MONUMENT.

Mr (late) Iravatham Mahadevan I A S made himself a fool by the following comment on Purananuru 201:

But 1935 Ananda Vikatan Akaradi/ Dictionary gives the meaning Sacrificial Fire pit etc for Tadavu. Moreover Draupadi came out from Yaga Kunda; Goddess Meenakshi came out of Yaga Kundam; Elixir carrying Deva for Emperor Dasaratha came out of Yaga Kundam; Rajasthans four Kshatria castes came from Yaga Kundam. Tamil Velirs came out from the Fire pit; They came to Tamil Nadu from North India via Karnataka. Read more below:

those kings who amass riches only for the sake of munificence; reticent only for the sake of veraciousness (truth); ambitious to campaign only for the sake of their upper hand and those that get married only for the sake of meetly progeny… hence, they are the conscientious kings… [1-7]

Item 599 Purananuru 312 and Satapata Brahmana (800 BCE)

Puranānūru 312, Poet: Ponmudiyār, Thinai: Vākai, Thurai: Moothin Mullai
It is my foremost duty to bear and raise him;
it is his father’s duty to make him a noble man;
it is the duty of the blacksmith to forge and give
him a spear; it is the duty of the king to teach
him good behavior, and it is the duty of the
young man to fight in harsh wars with his bright
sword, killing enemy elephants and coming back.

(Vaidehi Herbert Translation)

Mother’s duty to raise the child;

Father’s duty is to educate him.

It is Satapata Brahmana 14-58-2:

Maatrumaan, Pitrumaan  Aachaaryavaan Veda

Commentators say on this :

To make a perfect child and an educated person one needs a wise mother, a learned father and a highly pious and well-versed teacher.

Item 600 Puram 183 on Four Castes and Manu 10-65

Caste is not important if one is educated

Puranānūru 183, Āriyappadai Kadantha Nedunchezhiyan sang this,

It is good to learn from a teacher,
helping him during his troubles,
giving him substantial wealth and
learning with respect, without malice.

To those born in the same womb,
a mother’s mind will be tender
toward the man who is learned.
The king will follow the path of the
learned man, and not welcome and
follow the path of a man just because
he is first born.

Among the four groups in society,
if a man from a lower group learns,
even one from an upper group will

come to him to learn with reverence.

śraddadhānaḥ śubhāṃ vidyāmādadītāvarādapi |
anyādapi paraṃ dharmaṃ strīratnaṃ duṣkulādapi || 238 ||

One imbued with faith may acquire excellent learning even from a lowly person, special law even from the lowest, and the gem of a wife even from a base family.—(238)

Item 601 Zodiac

Some scholars thought Hindus learnt Zodiacal system from Greeks. But we have references to zodiac in Puram verse 117, Nedunal vadai line 160 ,

Paripatal 5-11 and Mullaippattu as well. Because of these references we may conclude Hindus knew zodiac even before the contacts with the Greeks. We have references to 12 months which was also based on the movement of Sun and Moon into zodiacal signs.

Item 602 Astrologer cum Poets

We have several poets in Sangam literature with the word Gani or Kani. It means they are well versed in astrological calculations;

Following poets were astrologers or astronomers –

Gani / kani medhaviyar

Ganiyan / kaniyan poonkundranar – Puram 192;

Kapilar – Puram 117;

Pakkudukkai  nanganiyar – Puram 194.

Tamil word Arivan was also used for astrologers.

Item 603 Thousand years before Kapilar

PICTURE- Goddess  Madurai Meenakshi appeared in Yaga Kundam as the daughter of Kanchanamala and Malayadwaja Pandya.

Puram verse 201 by Kapilar and 363 by Siruventeraiyar (Manduka Maharishi)  show that the ancient history of Tamil Nadu is well known to Sangam Age poets.

Kapilar talks about 49 generations of Velir clan which means 1000 years before him. Velirs came to Tamil Nadu around 1000 BCE. Siru Venteraiyar speaks about the countless kings died on earth. He compared the dead kings to sand particles on the coast.

Brhad Aranyaka Upanishad also gives the names of over fifty generations. That puts the first Guru around 1800 BCE.

Puram.24, Narrinai 280 praised Velirs as an ancient clan.

Agastya brought them to Tamil Nadu along with 17 other groups/clans.

Who are Velirs?

Kapilar says they came out of Yaga Kunda (Sacrificial Fire Pit). Chalukyas also claimed that they came from Sacrificial Fire.

Velir= Velvi= Yaga/ Yajna.

In the north Four Rajpiut clans are said to have come out of Yaga Fire pit of Vasisthta Rishi.

Rajput Kshatriyas PARAMARA (PARAMAR), PRATIHARA  (PARIHARA), CHALUKYA (SOLANKI) AND CAAHAMAANA (CHAUHAN) CAME FROM A SACRIFICIAL FIRE PIT ON MOUNT ABU. Col. Tod has reported it in his Annals of Antiquities of Rajasthan.

Skanda Purana 7-3-1 also confirms the Fire Pit matter.

Puranānūru 201, Poet Kapilar sang to King Irungōvēl, Thinai: Pādān, Thurai: Parisil
If you ask who they are, they are his daughters,
he who granted towns to those who came in need
and earned great fame for gifting a chariot to a
jasmine vine to climb,
he who owned elephants with jingling bells, the
lord of Parampu, the great king Pāri.  They are
my daughters now.
As for me, I am their father’s friend, a Brahmin,
a poet who has brought them here.

You are the best Vēlir of the Vēlir clan,
with a heritage of forty-nine generations of Vēlirs
who gave with love to those in need,
who ruled Thuvarai with a fort with tall, huge walls
that were made of copper, whose ancestors appeared
in the sacrificial pit of a northern sage,
O king who is victorious in battles!

O great king with garlanded elephants!
O Pulikatimāl wearing a thick garland, who knows
what a man’s responsibility is, and what your duty is
to bards!  I am offering them.  Please accept them.
Lord of the sky-high mountain that yields gold!
You whose strength cannot be equaled on the earth
that is covered by an arched sky and surrounded
by the ocean, you whose army puts fear into
enemies with victorious spears!
O ruler of a land that can never be ruined!

AND TAMILS KNEW THOSANDS OF KINGS WHO RULED INDIA BEFORE SANGAM AGE!

நாடு பிறர் கொளச் சென்று மாய்ந்தனரே;
மடங்கல் உண்மை மாயமோ அன்றே;

Puranānūru 363, Poet: Aiyāthi Siruventhēraiyār, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Perunkānji

Kings who have ruled this huge land surrounded
by the large ocean, without giving even an udai
tree leaf size land for others, are many, more in
numbers than the sand brought to the shores by waves.
These kings who ruled have gone to the cremation
grounds, as others took their land.

So you too should listen!  There is no one who has lived
forever.  Death is real!  It is not an illusion!

Do what you intend to do and renounce totally, this world
girded by ocean, before the sad day comes when you will be
carried in a bier to the vast cremation ground filled with
kalli trees with thorns, fed cooked rice without salt that will
be placed on the ground, by a man performing funeral rites,
who, without looking at your corpse, will offer you food.

(Vaidehi Herbert’s translations are used; thanks)

My comment

Ven Teraiyar= Manduka Maharishi ; this poem and another Purananuru poem which reports seven kings took power on the same day show clearly Hindus knew very ancient history of India.
