Interview with A.V. Swaminatha Sivachariar

I interviewed Sri A.V. Swaminatha Sivachariar on Friday the 26th of August 2016. It was about the Vedic studies in olden days and modern days. Several interesting points came up in the interview. Since I wrote “Why do Hindus worship Moon?” (posted on 31 July 2013) wherein I mentioned Hindus don’t study Vedas on certain days in a month I asked the question about it.

Sri Swaminatha Sivachariyar said:

“People think that Western countries introduced the concept of Holidays in India. But Hindus are the one who introduced holidays in educational institutions before them. The Veda Patasalas (Vedic Institutes) have holidays called ANADHYAYANA days. This means no one is allowed to do Vedic learning (Adhyayana) on those days.

Hindus have introduced more holidays than any other people. The days, Vedic study is not allowed, are the New Moon day, Full Moon Day and a day before that and a day after that. They are called Chaturdasi and Prathamai in Sanskrit. Also on Ashtamis (eighth day after full moon and new moon)

Chaturdasi- 14th day ;it comes one day before full moon or new moon day; Prathamai- first day after full moon or new moon day.

This will add to a total of eight days or more in a month” ( at least two ashtamis, two prathamais, two chaturdasis and one full moon and one new moon days).

I asked him what do the students do on those days. He said:-

“The students are residential students. They stay in Veda Patasalas and study; away from their parents. So they do the cleaning, washing and shopping on those days. Parents come and meet them. And above all, those are the days for REVISION. In spite of ‘holiday’ the Acharya (teacher) comes and supervises the revision. Whatever the students have learnt in the previous week or month, they have to say it loudly. It is called THIRUVAI (repeats).

So the days are used for 1.revision 2.cleaning and washing 3.meeting parents and 4. a break from the daily monotony

Hindu’s Strange Calculator!!

Hindus are taught at the age of seven or nine or eleven a calculating method with their fingers to count 108(Brahmins, Kshatrias and Vaisyas respectively).

They are supposed to recite 108 or 1008 Gayatri mantras thrice a day. For this they use their fingers; they start counting from the bottom line in the ring finger and go clockwise. When they go to the bottom line of little finger it adds up to ten. The tip of the thumb will touch each line while counting. This is done on right hand fingers. When they do ten times Gayatri, the left hand lines will be used to count in tens. So when the left hand little finger bottom line is reached, it totals to 100.

new-moon-january.jpg

Picture of New Moon (Amavasya) , Ashtami and Full Moon (Purnima)

But in THIRUVAI, the students use their Punul (Sacred thread worn by three castes; nowadays Brahmins only); every time they do one mantra, the sacred thread is wound around one finger; when all the five fingers are used for five times; they go in reverse direction winding the sacred thread over the fingers. Thus each mantra is repeated ten times. This is poor man’s calculator or Hindu calculator. Vedas are unique in the world because they have been passed only through the mouth and never used written materials until today.”

My comments on the interview:

Three years ago I wrote that Hindus don’t study Vedas on these eight days because of moon’s effect over our bodies. Since we see the surging sea waves during the eighth and fifteenth days of the month, the same change is happening in our bodies also; human body contains more water than any other element.

This holiday has been used for at least 3000 or 5000 years. So we can say that Hindus invented monthly holidays. Not only that, they had more holidays than the Jews a, Christians and Muslims. Christians have Sunday holiday because God created the world in six days and took rest on Sunday. Jews have Sabbath holiday from sunset on Friday until sunset on Saturday. Muslims have holidays for Prayer on Fridays (in Muslim countries). While these people declared only four holidays a month, Hindus declared eight holidays in a month! No doubt that we led the world in inventing holidays and extending to eight days a month. Apart from this, Hindu religious festival holidays are more in a year than any other religion in the world.

ocean-waves-hitting-

Hindus had great memory power in those days. Most of the things are learnt by heart by repeating after the teacher. That is why we don’t have many epigraphs or inscriptions or manuscripts before Buddhist days. They were the one who introduced stones and metals to write all their teachings.

1.Autograph Sale!

Cornelian Otis Skinner (American author and actress) declares that as a child she was so ugly that her mother used to weep.  “But I did have a genius for something even then”, she says.

I was good at trade and I made money from dad. He thought I was a good correspondent; I was; for every letter I wrote him, I received an answer. I cut the Cornelia from the address on the envelope containing his reply, and sold the Otis Skinner as my father’s autograph. Sometimes it brought a dime, sometimes a quarter”.

2.Otto Kahn

Otto Kahn, the well-known financie , was one day driving through the East Side of New York when he saw a large sign reading,

“Samuel Kahn, cousin of Ottoman Kahn”

He immediately called up his lawyer, instructing him to have the sign changed, sparing no expense.  A few days later Kahn drove by the place again. The offending sign had been changed. It read, Samuel Kahn, formerly cousin of Otto Kahn.

(3)Thousand Dollars a Week!

When the films were in their infancy, David Freedman claimed to have arranged a splendid contract for Francis X Bushman by a well-conceived stratagem. Bushman had been playing in Chicago at 250 dollars a week. Freedman brought him to New York and met him at grand central to take him across the Broadway to the office of Metro. Freedman carried a sack of 2000 pennies. He stewed these along behind him in a thin trickle as they walked.

First children and then curious adults began to follow. By the time they had crossed 42nd street to Broadway and entered the office of Metro, a vast throng was surging in their wake. Looking out the window, the executive of Metro was easily induced to sign Bushman at a thousand dollars a week.

4.Boy and the Blacksmith

A boy, generally known about the village as being not too bright was annoying the busy blacksmith. Hoping to scare him away, the blacksmith finally held a red hot piece of iron under the boys nose.

“If you give me half a dollar I will lick it” , said the simple looking youngster.

The smith held out the coin. Without a word the boy took the coin and licked it, dropped it in his pocket, and whistling softly walked away.

Demolishing Dravidian Demon Theories! (Post No.3067)

Foreign invaders who wanted to make India their permanent colony and destroy Hinduism wrote that India was invaded by the Aryans at one time. Strangely the invaders identified themselves with the Aryans. At the same time they instigated the so called Dravidians to agitate against the north Indians. The whole world knew about their motto “Divide and Rule”.

Most of the Hindus have never read their scriptures in full and most of the Tamils have never read the ancient Sangam Tamil literature in full. But reading all the ancient Hindu scriptures  — I am using the word READING not studying—is an impossible task to anyone. Because before the Greeks started writing in Greek , before the Romans started writing in Latin, before Moses and Jesus started speaking in one or other Semitic languages, Hindus wrote hundreds of books. If anyone draws a line around 800 BCE as the cut-off date, these languages wont be there. Tamil literature came later around first century BCE

Since no one was able to master the scriptures, foreigners wrote all the fanciful rubbish things about Hinduism citing one or two verses from thousands of books, mostly out of context. In ancient Tamil and Sanskrit literature ‘Aryan’ meant a cultured, civilized person or saints living in the Himalayas. But foreign invaders gave a racial tone to this word. Dravidian meant a southerner and the invaders gave a new bad connotation.

They dubbed all the black skinned, snub nosed, curly haired, egg shape eyed, short fellows as Dravidians. While identifying themselves with fair skinned north Indians, foreign invaders sympathised with the Dravidians saying that they were driven out of their homeland by the Aryans. In all their writings they showed Dravidians as uncivilized and uncultured people. They also said that the Dravidians were shown as demons in Hindu literature.

Since Hindus never read any book in full, most of them believed what the invaders said without any scrutiny. If anyone reads read the Hindu scriptures one would know what the that the scriptures say. The scriptures say who were the demons and how come they became demons. They also showed that demons and angels were cousins and their behaviour only made them demons. They also showed that they were liberated from the “demonship”.

I have given many examples in my previous articles (see the links below). I will add two more from the Ramayana where the demons turned Gandharvas, turned again into Gandharvas.

1.Demon Viradha says to Rama:-

“Thorugh a curse, I had to assume the monstrous shape of a titan, but in reality I am the Ganharva Tumburu, who incurred the wrath of Kuvera. He cursed me to become a demon because of my attachment to Ramba. That glorious God propitiated by me, said: When Rama overcomes you in fight, you will assume the natural form. By your grace I am delivered from this curse and shall now return to my abode”

Aranya Kanda, Chapter 4, Valmiki Ramayana

2.Demon Kabandha says:

“O Rama, on a certain occasion I incurred the wrath of a great Rishi named Sthulashira, whom I tormented in this loathsome shape, whilst he was gathering wild fruits. Fixing gaze on me , he pronounced a terrible curse on me to remain in this ugly shape till I am killed by you. This ugly form came to me by another curse of Indra in the battle field.”

In the end he regained his original shape of a Gandharva.

In stories like as Kalmasapada in the Mahabharata, we see even kings becoming Rakshasa (demon).

In short demons are not Dravidians or a separate race. Even a cultured, educated person like Ravana is depicted as a demon when he acquired more bad qualities.

If we go deeper into Hindu literature we come to know they also worshipped the same gods and received big boons from the same gods worshipped by the Devas (angles).

Wonderful and Strange Facts in Manu Smrti (Post No.3041)

Manu Smrti or Manava Dharma Sastra has 2685 slokas or couplets.

Manu Smrti (MS) is the oldest law book in the world according to the internal evidence (Please see below about Soma Herb and Saraswati River).

There is no book in the world that deals with so many topics as MS.

It is older than the Hammurabi code according to the evidence in it and other scriptures like Bhagavad Gita.

It has got many strange references about women, Saraswati River, Age of man and sale of Soma etc. In this first part I will refer to some slokas with my comments.

1.Woman’s Mouth is always Pure:-

A woman’s mouth is always unpolluted, as is a bird that knocks down a fruit; a calf is unpolluted while the milk is flowing and the dog is unpolluted when it catches a wild animal (3-150)

2.Man lived for 400 years!

In the Krta Yuga (First of the Four Yugas), people are free from sickness, achieved all their goals, and have a life span of 400 years; but in the ages that began with the age of Treta yuga, their life span grows smaller foot by foot ( in other places he mentions 100 year life span during the modern era).

3.Origin of life in Water:-

He (God) thought deeply, for he wished to emit various sorts of creatures from his own body; first he emitted the waters, and then he emitted his semen in them; that became a golden egg, as bright as the sun with his thousand rays; Brahma himself, the grand father of all people, was born in that egg. “The waters are born of man”, so it is said, indeed the waters are the children of the primordial man (1-8 to 10).

4.Sumuka mystery

Manu gives a list of kings in which Sumuka is one; there is no mention of Sumuka in our scriptures, but it is in Sumerian king list (Please read my article:Sanskrit words in Sumerian Culture: Sumukan Mystery, posted on 12 May 2014)

manu2

5.Strangest treatment!

Foreigners criticised every Hindu scripture as corrupted and interpolated; they even criticised the purest and oldest scripture Rig Veda as interpolated with Khila (appendix added later) portions. But they maintain dead silence about Manu Smrti. They never talk about any interpolations, because they want to use all the interpolations as originals and bash them as hard as possible. It is the strangest fact.

My comments:

Manu Smrti has many interpolations (I will call them ‘udating’) which were added during the Brahmin rule of Sunga Vamsa around Second century BCE. Harsh slokas about Shudras were added during this period. What is the proof for interpolations? The proof comes in the form of contradictions in the book. It advocates marrying any woman if she is good, getting education from the lowest class, praising women sky-high which is not seen in any book until today. But in some other places we have contradictory statements.

In several places Manu is used in third person:- Manu said….. This shows it was compiled by someone at a later date.

6.Manu’s Age 1500 or 5000 BCE!

Lord Krishna mentioned Manu in fourth chapter of Bhagavad Gita. He says he was the predecessor of Ikshvaku (Sugarcane King); please read my articles about Manu and Sugarcane:-

Mystery of Manu: Rig Veda Mystery No.8, posted on 19 January 2015

The Sugarcane Mystery: Indus Valley and Ikshvaku Dynasty, posted on 19 November 2011

The internal evidence in Manu Smrti is amazing:-

The Saraswati River is mentioned by him in at least three places:-8-105, 2-17, 11-78

He says a person who killed a Brahmin may eat food fit for the oblation and walk the length of the Sarasvati river; earlier he mentioned a walk for 1000 miles reciting the Vedas to get rid of the sin.

My comments:

This means Manu lived in the period when Sarasvati river was running for 1000s of miles. Even the Mahabharata and Brahmana literature mentioned the dried Sarasvati river. That means Manu lived before the Mahabharata period. DR Mankad dated him around 5700 BCE.

7.Sale of Soma!

Soma plant was very rare even during late Vedic age. They were talking about alternates to Soma. Manu mentioned about Soma sale and forbidden sale etc. That means he lived in the early Vedic age.

All the dates given by western scholars are ridiculous. It is like giving a date of latest amendment to Indian constitution as the original date of the constitution. All Hindu Puranas, Smrtis and Scriptures were subjected to constant updating.

Soma plant and Soma sacrifices were mentioned in several places:-

3-87, 211, 257

4-26, 52

9-129, 11-7 to 12, 255

Sale of Soma – 3-158, 180, 10-80

To be continued………..

Sanskrit is the richest and the oldest language in the world. All subjects under the sun are dealt with by the Sanskrit poets. If we take other ancient languages, they lack in many respects. Moreover, they are all younger than Sanskrit. Sanskrit literature is available from the Vedic days (at least 1400 BCE) whereas Greek literature is available only from 8th century BCE and Tamil literature only from the first century BCE. Chinese and Hebrew literature may be older than Greek, Tamil and Latin but not as comprehensive as Sanskrit or Greek. No Indian can speak even for five minutes without a Sanskrit word!

Currency-of-the-world-006

When I call Sanskrit the oldest language, I say it on the basis of archaeological evidence (Bogazkoy inscrription, Dasaratha letters in Egypt, Kikkulis Horse manual in Turkey and Mitannian civilization and literary evidence (The Rig Veda) available today. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet the language spoken by the Indus people.

Let us look at some couplets about white and black money in Sanskrit:–

Rough Translation OF THE Sanskrit couplets given at the end: –

“Since we need money for everything it is necessary to earn it.

Three different tasks are there: Protecting what you have earned, increasing it (by way of investing) and enjoying it.

There are three kinds in it; they are white, mixture of both and black/coloured/stained.

Those can be divided into seven each;

Earning money by teaching, heroism, penance, kanyaa dhaanam (money when you get by marrying your daughter), by fire sacrifice, earning through your disciples (probably Guru dakshina) and treasure found are the seven that come under WHITE MONEY (sukla+aarjanam);

Earning through interest, agriculture, business, tax, arts, anuvrddi (side business or byeproducts) and reciprocal money (you do some favours and they give you money) are the seven that come under spotted or STAINED (sabalam) MONEY.

Money earned by slavery (servitude), gambling, begging, blackmailing, impersonation, heroic acts (goonies)  and fraudulent business are the seven that come under BLACK MONEY”.

My comments: —

Nowadays we use the terms white money, black money and stained hands; probably these came in vogue from these Sanskrit slokas/couplets.

joe

kiran

Annual Ratha Yatra (Chariot Festival of Iskcon) was held on 17th July 2016 in Central London. Like previous years, thousands of people gathered in Central London. Three Chariots started from Hyde Park and finished in Trafalgar Square. Through out the route thousands and thousands had the darshan of the three chariots. Tourists were amazed to see such a thing in central London. They took lot of pictures and selfies with the chariots, devotees and onlookers.

Hare Krishna devotes prostrated before the Rathas on the roads. Food was distributed to thousands of people at the finishing place. Throughout the route Bhagavad Gita and other books were distributed for a token donation. Devotees from other European cities also took part in it. Senior White and Black devotees were sitting on the Ratha at the foot of Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra.

Dancing and singing added colour to the Rath Yatra. Several Bhajan groups were singing the name of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. Even white women came in sarees. It was a colourful show. Children also joined their parents by walk and riding on their shoulders. I saw a few pregnant devotees and women with children in Prams.

Though twenty other Tamil Temples also conduct Chariot Festivals every summer, they use the local routes around their temples. Hare Krishna people are the only devotees allowed in Central London. Their discipline is well known. Very few police were visible. Crowd control and traffic control were done efficiently by the volunteers. It was an enjoyable day for the devotees and the tourists.

Though I have posted lot of pictures on face book, I have selected some good pictures and post here.

Talking to God twice a day!

Grocer Whalen, during his administration of the World Fair , was known for his inaccessibility.  The story was told of one man, who, after repeated rebuffs, stormed past the receptionist one morning. The astonished girl called out,

“You can’t speak to Mr Whalen”.

The visitor paused in his advance long enough to say,

“Young Lady, I talk with God twice a day and He listens to me. I can certainly talk to Grover Whalen”.

He got his interview.

Time to Think!

Into the office of one of his subordinate executives came Edward H Harriman, the Railroad King. His unexpected entrance caught the man tilted back in his chair with his feet on his desk. The executive hastily straightened up, fearing a possible scene, and with visions of being fired on the spot.

With relief he heard Harriman say, “I am glad you take time to think.”

Inspiring Slogan!

Ira Hirschman, the department store executive, once visited a department store in a medium sized mid-western city. The manager of the store was a bustling little man filled with self- importance and a belief in himself as a modern high pressure executive.

“One of the things I pride myself on, he explained, is the morale of the personnel in the store I keep them up on their toes all the time with inspiring slogans.  You would be surprised how it works. Now the slogan this week is one I thought up myself. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing at all”.

Cheat got Double Pay!

The celebrated newspaper publisher, James Gordon Bennet, was a man of harsh principle, and most especially was he intolerant of drinking. One time one of his pressmen turned up, after a spree, with a conspicuous black eye. Bennet happened to enter the pressroom and, fearful of being spotted and asked for an explanation, the culprit hastily smeared printers ink over his face, and applied himself to his tasks.

Who is that fellow, Bennet demanded, noting the grimy workman.

“What are you paying him?”, he asked next.

The foreman told him.

“Double it, ordered Bennet. He is obviously doing more work than anyone else in the place”.

Banker’s Hours!

The owner of a fruit and vegetables store employed a boy whose duty it was to be on hand at 3 o clock every morning to deal with the truck farmers. The proprietor did not arrive until opening time.  For the sake of checking up he unexpectedly came to the shop one night, and at 3 o clock the boy had not arrived. 3-05 and the had not yet come. A moment or so later the boy hastened in.

“So, bellowed his employer, Banker’s hours!”

Part 7 was published here on 11th of July. First part contains a detailed introduction.

Following are taken from the People of India written by Sir Herbert Risley, Director of Ethnography for India, Year 1915 with my comments

IMG_2164

Kaamaars, Blacksmiths of Bihar (Plate 28)

Lohaars , the ordinary blacksmiths of Northern India  working in iron only, whereas Kaamaars work on iron and gold as well. I Eastern Bengal they make brass cooking vessels as well. Hence they hold a higher rank than the Lohaars, and Brahmans will take water from their hand. They pride themselves on not allowing their women to wear noserings. Like other artisan castes, they worship Visvakarma, the Divine architect of the Universe, who is often represented by the hammer, anvil, and other tools used in their handicraft.

My comments:-

First, note the caste names Kaamaars and lohaars are Sanskrit names (Karmaara, Loha kara)

If they are non Aryans, if they are Shudras, why there are so many differences between themselves? If they are Dravidians, how come they worship Visvakarma, the Vedic God? So the division of Aryan- Dravidian is a pure concoction of foreigners.

Lama Woman, Mongoloid Type, (Plate 30)

Laama is a Tibetan word meaning “Superior One”, and was formerly restricted to the head of a monastery. It is now strictly applicable only to abbots and to the higher class of Buddhist monks. In many places the first born son is often dedicated to the profession of religion.  As in the case of the lady in the illustration, to use the words of Lt.Col. Waddel , “Their inveterate craving for material  protection against malignant gods and demons has caused them to pin their faith on charms and amulets, which are to be seen everywhere dangling from the dress of every man, woman and child.

My comments:

Their beliefs, customs and jewels are completely different from other communities. They are classified as of  Mongoloid race. What makes them Mongoloid? Customs? Facial features? Amulets and Charms are even in the Atharva Veda. First son is dedicated to religion/ Is it Aryan or Dravidian? All the divisions are artificial and man-made. Differences are there in every big geographical area. Great Britain has four prominent ethnic groups: Scottish, Welsh, English and Irish. But they are united under British. The same people who merged ethnicities under the term ‘British’, divided Hindu races as Aryans, Dravidians and Mongolians etc.

Totemism in Bengal

One more instance of totemism in Bengal deserves special notice here, as it shows the usage maintaining its ground among people of far higher social standing than any of the castes already mentioned. The Kumhaars of Orissa take rank immediately below the Karan or writer caste, and thus have only two or three large castes above them. They are divided into two two endogamous sub castes – Jagannathi and Oriya Kumhars who work standing  and make large earthern pots, and Khattya Kumhars who turn the wheel sitting and make small earthern pots or cups.

For matrimonial purposes the Jagannathi Kumhars are subdivided into the following exogamous sections:–

Jagannathi Kumhaar

Name of Section – Totem

Kaundinya – Tiger

Sarpa – Snake

Neul – Weasel

Goru – Cow

Mudir – Frog

Bhadbhadria – Sparrow

Kurmaa – Tortoise

My comments:-

Even the potters’ castes have Sanskrit totem names and caste names. Foreigners could not digest this. They are considered lower in rank, “Dravidian” in appearance! But have Rishi’s name (Kaundinya) and Sanskrit caste names (Kumhaars = kumbakara). Foreigners struggled to find a reason and at last aid “ probably they borrowed” them. This is how they fooled all Indians and divided India into races and classes.

In the next article I will list all the Vedic Tribes.

To be continued……………..
