Purananuru wonders-33, Tamil Encyclopedia-73; One Thousand Interesting Facts -Part 73
Item 572
A short poem by Miss Angavai and Miss Sangavai, daughters of PAARI, philanthropist and ruler of Parampu region. They were sad after losing their father in the battle. They lamented saying “on one full moon day we were with our father and during this full moon day he was no more”. Here they said “the three kings WON!” But according to great scholar U Ve Sa., it is a sarcastic remark; not a praise but a rebuke, a condemnation.
Only about 25 women poets are known in Sangam literature. Though it is short by two of them, It gives us lot of information.
Puranānūru 112, Poets: Vēl Pāri’s daughters,
Last month, under that white moon, we had our father, and nobody had seized our mountain. This month, under this white moon, the kings with victory drums have seized our mountain. We don’t have our father!
Notes: This poem was written by the two daughters of Pāri. Kapilar appealed to the Chozha, Chera and Pandiya kings not to invade and attack Pāri’s Parampu Mountain and country. Despite that, they killed him by treacherous means and took his country. Kapilar took custody of the girls and trieed to arrange their marriages.

Item 573
This poem is Kapilar’s elegy after losing his patron Paari. Here we see the abundant food served by Paari to his people and bards. Though Kapilar was a Brahmin, he mentioned the non vegetarian food cooked in Parampu. Few scholars thought that Kapilar also ate meat which was not correct. Kalidas also praised non vegetarian food in one of his poems and few scholars commented in the same way. They were wrong inded.
Puranānūru 113, Poet Kapilar sang as he left Parampu Mountain, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Kaiyaru Nilai
O Parampu Mountain of great fame!
In the past, wine jars were opened, male sheep were slaughtered, unlimited rice and fatty meat were cooked together and served, great wealth was bestowed according to the desires of the receivers, and you made me your friend.
Now Pāri is dead, I am confused and helpless, and my tears stream down. I worship and praise you.
I am leaving in search of husbands for his daughters with fragrant, dark hair and rounded, thick small bangles on their forearms.

Item 574 Double entendre
This is my comment:
In the Puram verse 113 Kapilar said to Pari, I worship you. And in this Puram verse 114, he praised Paari’s Parampu as நெடியோன் குன்றம் Nediyon Kundram.
This is the hills where world famous and richest Balaji temple is located. So my opinion is Kapilar used the word deliberately to compare Paar’s hills to the great Venkatam Hills. Venkatam Hillls, where Balaji/ Venkatachalapathy temple is located is praised from Sangam days.
Puranānūru 114, Poet Kapilar sang after the fall of Parampu Mountain, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Kaiyaru Nilai
His Mountain appears close to those who stand here. It also appears to those who move away a little farther, the great man who donated chariots in his court, whose courtyard had flowing, fermenting liquor dregs, appearing like the fibrous refuse spit by elephants after they chewed food.

Item 575
Water Falls and Wine Falls
Here there is another description of water falls and pouring toddy/wine.
Kapilar’s poems make it very clear that Tamils of his age were (heavy) drinkers and meat eaters! Again, he deliberately used Water falls and Wine Falls ,is my opinion.
Puranānūru 115, Poet Kapilar sang this after the death of Vēl Pāri, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Kaiyaru Nilai
On one side waterfalls roared. On the other side, filtered clear liquor was poured to fill bowls of bards as it overflowed and moved pebbles in the mountain belonging to the sweet man who was ferocious to kings who commanded many spears and mighty elephants.
****
Item 576 Elegy Poems
We have about 40 elegies in Purananuru and we see Kapilar’s elegy after Paari’s death. So the compilers mentioned it as one of Kaiyaru Nilai (கையறுநிலை) poems.
Kaiyaru Nilai (கையறுநிலை) is a prominent literary term in ancient Tamil Sangam literature, specifically found in the Puram (புறம்) tradition. It describes a state of utter helplessness, profound grief, and not knowing what to do upon experiencing the loss or death of a revered figure.
In this Puram verse 116, Kapilar lamented and at the same time gives us a beautiful description of Parampu Hills natural scenery.
Puranānūru 116, Poet Kapilar sang this after the death of Vēl Pāri, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Kaiyaru Nilai
Skirts made of fully opened blue waterlilies from the large, deep sweet-water springs, sway on the loins of the young women with beautiful moist-eyes and sweet smiles.
They climb on heaps of date palm fronds, ……….where surai and peerkkai gourd vines have spread ……….near a small house that has cotton growing in ……….its front yard with a thorn fence surrounding it, ……….near the forked path choked by grass, and count salt wagons belonging to salt merchants.
I am in pain! May my life end!
They used to climb the summit of the wide mountain with unending prosperity, ……….where peacocks rose up and danced in flowering ……….groves, trees yielded fruits even in unseasonal times, ……….and monkeys that leaped and swung in the dense ………slopes couldn’t eat all the fruits, and count proud horses with gold saddles belonging to kings with great armies, who were ignorant about how difficult it would be to defeat their father Pāri who wielded sharp spears and had abundant liquor.

Item 577 Counting
In the previous poems of Kapilar I gave you two points
1.He spoke in bullet points: point 1, point 2……..
2.He gave us a stats: 300 towns in Parampu under Paari.
Now in the above verse 116 he deliberately used COUNTING twice. It showed not only Kapilar’s interest in Mathematics but also Tamil’s knowledge in counting and statistics.

Item 578 Astronomy in Ancient Tamil Nadu
Kapilar’s poem Purananuru verse 117 is an important verse that shows the ancient knowledge of astronomy in Tamil Nadu. There are some Hindu beliefs which are not scientifically proved yet. That is about the position of Venus and its link to rain and drought. But the compilers of Puram put all Venus related poems together nearer to the end of the anthology. That shows their strong belief in it. These Hindu beliefs about Venus and comet are seen in Sanskrit books as well.
Here Kapilar talks about three astronomical events:
Saturn; Comet; Venus.
1.Even If the planet Saturn looks hazy or smoky or abnormal;
2.Even if a comet appears;
3.Even if Venus runs southward;
Pari’s land will be ever green, flourishing, prosperous.
All the above three are not proved or accepted in science; but we see these things in earlier Sanskrit books as well.
Moon’s influence on plants (Soma meant moon, plant etc), Venus’ influence on Plants or rain or drought must be probed in depth. Nowadays statistics are available on websites. But no scholar has done anything to prove or disprove it
Puranānūru 117, Poet Kapilar sang this remembering Vēl Pāri ‘s Parambu Nadu, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Kaiyaru Nilai
Even if Saturn smoldered, a comet appeared, or if Venus ran toward the south, his fields were full, bushes blossomed with flowers, and rows of large-eyed wild cows calved in the yards of houses and grazed on good grass.
Because of his just scepter, many wise men came to him, rains never failed even in the dry lands, and green-leaved mullai vines have buds looking like the thorny teeth of young wildcats, in their father’s land, the young girls with beautiful bangles.

HINDU MONALISA IN SCULPTURE.
Indians from very early times have discovered and realised the mysterious link of sympathy and attraction which exists between plant life and human life. They know that plants also have feelings like human beings.
A well-known verse in Sanskrit illustrates how human reacts with plants:
“The Priyangu creeper blossoms when touched by a woman, the Bakula tree flowers when sprinkled by a mouthful of wine by a woman, the Asoka when struck by a damsel’s foot adorned with anklets, the Tilaka by a mere glance, the Kurabaka when embraced, the Mandara by the cracking of a joke, the Campaka by a meaning and soft smile, the Cuta/mango tree by the breeze blown from the mouth, the Nameru by a song and Karnikara by a woman dancing in front of it. It is however , always a young and beautiful woman alone can exert this benign influence.”
It is also noteworthy that the five arrows of the God of Love (Manmata) with which he subjugates the whole universe are fashioned out of five flowers.
Aravindamasokascha cuusaayakaah tam cha navamallikaa
Nilotpalam cha panchaite panchabaanasya
The Five Flower Arrows
Each arrow represents a specific flower and governs a particular state of emotion or sensory experience:
1. Aravinda (Lotus)
o Associated Emotion: Fascination, exhilaration, or a sense of youthful cheer.
2. Aśoka (Ashoka Flower)
o Associated Emotion: Disturbance or excitement, sometimes causing an outpouring of emotion.
3. Cūta (Mango Blossom)
o Associated Emotion: Delusion or infatuation; “losing one’s mind” to desire.
4. Navamālikā (Jasmine)
o Associated Emotion: Burning desire, anguish, or restlessness.
5. Nīlotpala (Blue Lotus)
o Associated Emotion: Stupor, immobility, or deep, absorbing love.
DEVI HOLDING FIVE FLOWERS.
Thus the human world and the plant world are said to act and react on each other in various ways. This is called Dohada.

What is Dohada?
Dohada literally refers to the cravings of a pregnant woman and in this context the desire of trees, just before they bloom, for some kind of contact with a woman. Women can thus trigger their flowering by a sort of ritual that varies for each tree.
In classical Sanskrit literature, the Ashoka tree (Saraca asoca) and its relationship with women is a famous motif.
Following verse describes the beautiful, ancient poetic belief that the tree requires the touch of a woman’s foot to bloom.
“Even the sorrow-less Ashoka tree endures the kick from the lotus-eyed lovely woman’s feet; just like an intoxicated person who is delighted by the fragrance of a woman’s breath.”

Kalidasa on Trees
1. The Meghaduta (Kalidasa)
In his famous Khanda-Kavya (lyric poem), Kalidasa uses the dohada of the Ashoka tree to express the sorrow and separation of the Yaksha’s beloved in Alaka.
raktāsokam̉ namayati patāduttamāyāsahastāt “The red Ashoka bends down under the touch of the foot of the best of women…”
2. The Vikramorvashiyam (Kalidasa)
In this celebrated play, Kalidasa mentions the kurabaka tree which requires the embrace of a woman to bloom. The text is also noted for its early use of Doha (or Duha) verse forms, which are closely related metrical couplets used in Prakrit and Apabhramsha.
ASOKA TREE
3. The Classical Poetic Paradox In classical Sanskrit drama and poetry, the ultimate wonder for a poet is when spring arrives but these beloved trees bloom naturally, without the instigation of a woman’s foot, voice, or embrace. A well-known anonymous sloka encapsulates this dohada tradition:
nāliṅgitaḥ kurabakas tilako na dṛṣṭo no tāḍitaś ca caraṇaiḥ sudṛśām aśokaḥ | sikto na vaktram adhunā bakulaś ca caitre citram tathāpi bhavati prasavāvakīrṇaḥ ||
Meaning: The Kurabaka was not embraced, the Tilaka was not looked at, nor was the Ashoka struck by the feet of beautiful-eyed women. The Bakula was not sprinkled with the nectar of a mouth in the month of Chaitra (spring), and yet it is astonishingly covered in blossoms.
8th verse in the vasanta section of the 18th chapter of the Kavirahasya in the Kavyamimamsa – Rājaśekhara

Kalidasa in Raghuvamsa
Remembering the favour you have done by trampling this Ashoka tree to blossom perfectly, to the chime of jingling anklets, that too impossible to get for other trees, it is mourning for you by shedding flower-tear-rain. [8-63]
This literary concept of the dohada is intimately tied to the Shalabhanjika motif—the depiction of women engaging in garden sports and interacting gracefully with tree branches. It symbolizes the sacred bond of woman and nature.

This verse uses the metaphor of a goat (Aja/Ajā) to explain the relationship between the individual soul, the supreme soul, and material nature:
The Material World: The unborn, singular Prakriti is red, white, and black (representing the three gunas), and she continuously creates a multitude of living beings that resemble her.
The Bound Soul: One unborn soul (the Jiva) becomes attached to this material nature, gets entangled in it, and enjoys its experiences.
The Liberated Soul: Another unborn soul (the Supreme or liberated soul) disengages from Prakriti once her purpose (experience and eventual liberation) has been fulfilled.– Shvetashvatara Upanishad (Verse 4.5)
Or
There is one beginningless entity who is clear-white when she transmits conscious perception, reddish-hued when she inspires creativity, and dark-blue when she coagulates and destroys. There is another beginningless entity who wants to procreate with her. Yet another beginningless entity forsakes her after enjoying her.

Yaudheyas who ruled Northwest part of India had issued Skanda- Kartikeya -Murugan Coins 2000 years ago. They ruled Sapta Sindhu area (Punjab, Haryana regions) from 200 BCE to 300 CE. They issued various types of Skanda coins. The surprising thing is that they were the one who issued Skanda (Murugan in Tamil) coins with his Six Heads and his vehicle peacock. Later Gupta rulers issued such coins. Six Headed Skanda is called Shanmukha in Sanskrit and Aarumukham in Tamil. Adi Sankara who formed six groups of worship called Skanda worship Kaumaram because Kalidas made that name (Kumaara) popular 2200 years ago.
Sangam Tamil literature has one whole work written by a Brahmin poet named Nakkirar on Skanda and it is called Tiru Murugatruppadai. Anti God Dravidians dubbed it as a later interpolation, but Yaudheya coins explode such arguments. Added to this Patanjali’s Mahabhashya reference to Skanda, a commentary on world’s first grammar book by Panini known as Ashtadhyayi. In the 2200-year-old Mahabhasya, Patanjali gives us information about selling Murtis/figures of Skanda -Vishaka. This also gives credence to Sangam book Tiru Murugatruppadai.
Through this we come to know that the Skanda worship was popular from Himalayas to Kanyakumari 2000 years ago.

Who are Yaudheyas?
Panini refers to them specifically as an Ayudhajivin Sangha—a community of warriors who lived by the profession of arms. He explains that the suffix “-ya” was used in Sanskrit to signify martial and warrior tribes, a linguistic detail that fits the Yaudheyas’ historical reputation as a formidable military force
The tribal republics or Janapadas like Audumbara, Kuninda and Yaudheya issued their coins in the name of their presiding deities-Mahadeva. Chitresvara and Brahmanya. The early tribal republics of the 2nd century B.C.E, refer to their names and places in Brahmi script. Some republics issued coins with their names and title Raja or Maharaja. Copper was used as the prime metal for such issues. A few tribes issued coins in silver too.
Monarchies like Surasena and Panchala that sprang up during this period were located in the Ganga-Yamuna plain. The kingdom of Panchala issued copper coins bearing the names of no less than 35 kings.

Gupta Coins on Skanda
The golden age of Indian history was the rule of Guptas. They were great worshippers of Vishnu and they called themselves Parama Bhagavatas. But the world famous poet Kalidasa changed them into Saivites. Kalidasa lived in the first or second century BCE. His work Kumarasambhava on the birth of Kumara/ Skanda made Guptas to name their children Skanda Gupta, Kumara Gupta etc. They issued coins with Skanda with peacock.
Even Asvagosha , author of Buddha Carita in Sanskrit, compared Skanda with Buddha! According to Hindu literature in Tamil and Sanskrit, Skanda was a war god. He was the commander in chief of the Divine army. He married Indra’s daughter Devasena. In spite of his association with war, red colour and planet Mars, Asvagosha compared him to Buddha because of Kalidasa. In Raghuvamsa, Kalidasa compared three kings to Skanda. Tamils of Sangam age also followed Kalidasa and compared the kings with Muruga. Such was the influence of Kumarasambhava Kavya. Not only this, Tamil Sangam poets used the first ten slokas on Himalayas in Kumarasambhava, in their poems.
The greatest Art Historian of India Mr Sivaramanurti (Curator of Madras Museum) was a Sanskrit scholar. He argued Literature comes first Sculptures follow it like the Tamil saying Literature comes first Grammar follows it. He placed Kalidasa in Pre Gupta period, because Gupta coins show whatever Kalidasa said in his seven works.

Other coins on Muruga/Skanda/Kartikeya
Huvishka, successor of Kanishka, issued coins on all Hindu gods including Kartikeya around first century CE. Earlier rulers used pictures of Siva only. Huvishka used names in Mahabhashya such as Masena/ Mahasena , Skandakumaro Vizaka . His coins show that Skanda holding Trisula/trident like Shiva.
They spelt the names in strange ways
Shiva – oeso, uma – ommo

Yaudheya coins showed Skanda holding a spear; Vel in Tamil.
Kumara Gupta 415-450 CE issued beautiful Skanda coins in gold. The legend on his coin was Mahendrakumarah.
Gold coin issued by Chalukya Vikramaditya of Badami/Vatapi 655-681 CE has the figure of Kartileya. Peacock feather and snake are also seen.
Though kanda Murugan is called Tamil God, we don’t have any ancient coin with Muruga!
As late as seventeenth century, king Ragunatha Nayak of Thanjavur displayed standing figure of Kartikeya in his coin.
Later Kanthirava Narasaraja Wodeyar (1638-56) of Mysore issued coins with Kartikeya seated on a peacock.

Maurya dynasty was named after Peacock (Mayura) growers. Asoka was very fond of peacock meat. Even after spreading Buddhism, he never stopped killing peacocks for food, but he ordered to kill lesser number of the birds. Their coins show peacock with its feather. Since India made peacock its national bird, we can even say that India’s national God is Lord Skanda, Mahasenatipati, Commander in Chief!
