Shakuntala Popular Four Verses

Kavyesu Natakam ramyam tatra ramyaa Sakuntala

Tatraapi cha chaturtankah tatra sloka chatustayam

In the classical literature, drama is the best one; Among the Dramas Saakuntalam (of Kalidasa) is the best. Even in that drama fourth Act is the best one. And in the fourth act, there are four beautiful slokas!

The four verses in the Fouth Act are verses 6,18,19,22

Yaasyadya ………………….

Paatum na pratamam …………………

Asana sadhu………………..

Susruusasva ……………………..

Verse 6

Seer Kanva says:

This day will Sakuntala depart; at such a thought my heart is smitten with anguish; my voice is choked by suppressing the flow of tears; and my senses paralysed by anxious thought. If such through affection, is the affliction even of me a hermit, O with what pangs must they who are fathers of families be afflicted at the first parting with their daughters?

kali stamps 1

Verse 18

Seer Kanva addressing the trees and plants:

She who wouldn’t drink water first, before you were watered; she who cropped not through affection for you one of your fresh leaves, though she is fond of ornaments; she whose chief delight was in the season of the first appearance of your bloom; even that same Sakuntala is going to the palace of her wedded Lord. Let all give their consent.

Verse 19

Kanva says this Sarngarava:

Consider us, who are rich in self restraint

And consider your own exalted lineage

Consider well her love, spontaneous,

That flowed towards you  unprompted by her kin

Regard her then as worth equal  esteem

As your other consorts; more than that rests

On what Fortune has in store for her

The bride’s kin ought not to speak of it

kali stamp 2

Verse 22

“ My child, you are now leaving for your husband’s home; when you enter it:

Serve your elders with diligence; be a friend to your co-wives; even if wronged by your husband do not cross him through anger.
Treat those who serve you with utmost courtesy.
Be not puffed up with pride by wealth and pleasures;
Thus do girls attain the status of mistress of the home; those who act contrary are the bane of their families”.

These are the four popular verses in Sakntalam. All these are spoken by the seer Kanva.

If one reads in the drama and understands the context, it will add more colour and weight to these statements.

Sakuntala is shown as an innocent and  kind forest woman. Shakespeare has modelled his Miranda (The Tempest) on the character of Kalidasa’s Sakuntala.

1.Mark Twain

Mark Twain occasionally attended the services of Dr.Doane, later Bishop of Albany, but then Rector of an Episcopal church in Hartford. One Sunday morning, Twain said to him at the end of the service, Dr Doane , I enjoyed your service this morning. I welcomed it like an old friend. I have, you know, a book at home containing every word of it.

You have not, said Dr Doane indignantly.

I have so.

Well, you send that book to me. I would like to see it.

I will send it, promised Twain.

The following day he sent Dr Doan an unabridged dictionary.

2.What is the use of dictionary?

Why don’t you buy a dictionary? Asked the man whose friend repeatedly consulted him as to the spelling of certain words.

What would I do with a dictionary? , was the reply.

If I can’t spell the words, I couldn’t find them and if I can spell them, I don’t need a dictionary.

3.French dictionary!

A committee of the French academy employed in the preparation of the Academy dictionary, defined the word CRAB: a small red fish which walks backwards.

Commenting on this definition, the celebrated naturalist Cuiver said:

“Your definition, gentlemen, would be perfect only for three exceptions. The crab is not a fish, it is not red and it does not walk backwards”.

4.Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary

A bookshop owner gave Johnson the idea of producing one of greater accuracy and in 1746 he agreed a fee to produce such a work. With funds available he and his wife Tetty moved to a large new house at Gough Square off Fleet Street in London and six assistants were employed to help with the task. In France forty scholars of the Académie Française took forty years to produce a dictionary of their language but Johnson boasted that an Englishman could complete the equivalent work in just three. In creating it he read not only works of literature but also history, science, theology, and other subjects. Despite his intentions Johnson failed to prevent it becoming an objective work, with numerous personal opinions and jibes included within the definitions. The description for the word ‘dull’ became: “To make dictionaries is dull work.” The task eventually took three times longer than planned but Dictionary of the English Language was published in two large volumes in April 1755 and contained almost forty three thousand entries. It remained the pre-eminent British reference until the publication of the Oxford English Dictionary in about 1930.

5.Objectionable Words

Two ladies, encountering Dr Johnson soon after the publication of his “Dictionary”, complimented him for having omitted gross, indelicate, and objectionable words.

“What, my dears!” said Dr Johnson, “have you been searching for them?”

6.Which Webster?

There is a Congressional legend about the newly elected congressman who, in his maiden speech on the floor of the House, said, “As Daniel Webster makes clear in his famous dictionary…….”

He was interrupted from the floor by a cry of “Noah Webster wrote the dictionary.

“Noah nothing”, replied the speaker, “Noah built the ark!”

(Daniel Webster was an American senator and statesman and Noah Webster was an American lexicographer and English spelling reformer).

Political orators are not known for their gentle remarks when attacking an opponent. A particularly vicious example of this is the remark made by John Randolph about Edward Livingston.

“He is a man of splendid abilities, but utterly corrupt. Like a rotten mackerel by moon light, he shines and stinks.”

Xxx

Roosevelt Heckled

Once Theodore Roosevelt was making a political speech during one of his campaigns, when a heckler interrupted him from the large crowd with a repeated and slightly inebriated cry, “I am a Democrat”.

Roosevelt was generally a dangerous man to heckle. Pausing in his speech and smiling with oriental unction, he leaned forward and said, “May I ask the gentleman why he was a democrat?”

The voice replied, “My grandfather was a Democrat, my father was a Democrat, and I am a Democrat”.

Roosevelt said, “My friend, suppose your grandfather had been a jackass, and your father had been a jackass, what you would be?”

Instantly the reply came back, “A Republican!”

Go and Take Rest!

Fellow citizens, said the candidate. I have fought against the (Red) Indians. I have often had no bed but the battlefield, and no canopy but the sky. I have marched over the frozen ground till every step has been marked with blood.

His story told well, till a dried up looking voter came to the front. Did you say that you had fought for the Union?

Yes, replied the candidate.

And against the (American) Indians?

Yes, many a time, said the candidate.

And you had slept on the ground with only the sky for a roof?

Certainly.

And your feet bled in marching over the frozen ground?

That they did, cried the exultant candidate.

Then I will be darned if you hadn’t done enough for your country. Go home and rest. I will vote for the other fellow.

Pretending Candidate

A candidate for a minor county office had depicted himself as a true man of the people. A delegation once called on him at his country home. The candidate received them in his shirtsleeves and with a pitchfork in his hand. Saying that he was busy, he consented to talk with them if they would conduct the little meeting in the barn, where he had some hay to pitch into the loft. They all trotted down to the barn but found no hay there.

“Hiram”, asked the candidate of his hired man, “where is the hay?”

“Sorry, sir”, was the man’s reply. I have had time yet to throw it back since threw it up for yesterday’s delegation”

A Psalm of Life

BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW (1807-1882)

What The Heart Of The Young Man Said To The Psalmist.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

Life is but an empty dream!

For the soul is dead that slumbers,

And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

Is our destined end or way;

But to act, that each to-morrow

Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,

In the bivouac of Life,

Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!

Let the dead Past bury its dead!

Act,— act in the living Present!

Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And, departing, leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,

Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,

With a heart for any fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing,

Learn to labor and to wait.

TWO ORANGES

Chateauneuf, the keeper of the seals of Louis XIII, when a boy of only nine years old, was asked many questions by a bishop, and gave very prompt answers to them all. At leanth the prelate said, “I will give you an orange if you will tell me where God is”.

“My Lord”, replied the boy, “I will give you two oranges if you will tell me where He is not”.

FOUR GENTLEMEN

Four gentlemen – a Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist and Roman Catholic – met by agreement to dine on fish. Soon as grace (prayer before meal) was said, the Catholic rose, armed with a knife and fork, and taking about one third of the fish, including the head, removed it to his plate, saying with great satisfaction: The Pope is the head of the church”.

Immediately the Methodist minister arose, and helping himself with to about one third, embracing the tail, said: “The end crowns the work”.

The Presbyterian now thought it was time for him to move, and taking the remainder of the fish to his plate, exclaimed, “Truth lies between the two extremes”.

Our Baptist brother had nothing before him but an empty plate, and the prospect of a slim dinner, so seizing a bowl of melted butter, he dashed it over them, exclaiming: “ I baptize you all”.

THOREAU

NO QUARREL

Shortly before the death of Henry Thoreau, a pious aunt visited him and asked, “Have you made your peace with god, Henry?”

“I don’t know that we ever quarrelled”, he replied.

EDISON

Henry M.Stanley, the famous deliverer of Dr Livingston from darkest Africa, one time came to Edison’s laboratory to see the great inventor demonstrate his new invention, phonograph.

Having heard the machine, and been tremendously impressed by it, he asked,, “Mr Edison, if it were possible for you to hear the voice of any ma whose fame is known in the history of the world, whose voice would you prefer to hear?”

“Napoleon”, Edison answered without any hesitation.

“No, No”, said Stanley with an overtone of disapproval, “ I should like to hear the voice of Our Saviour”.

“Oh, Well”, replied Edison slightly embarrassed by his guest’s religious feeling, “You know I like a hustler”.

(hustler= someone who knows how to get money from others; aggressive salesman”

LINCOLN’S RELIGION

Abraham Lincoln, once remarked to a friend that his religion was like the religion of Glenn in Indiana, whom he heard speak at a church meeting and who said: “When I do good I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad; that is my religion”

XXXXX

To a clergyman during the early (American Civil) war Abraham Lincoln made a significant remark.

“Let us have faith, Mr President”, the minister said with solemnity, “that the Lord is on our side in this great struggle”

To which Lincoln quietly retorted, “I am not at all concerned about that, for I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right; but it is my constant anxiety and prayer, that I and this nation may be on the Lord’s side”.

PIOUS LADY

A pious lady had prayed to St Raboni for the conversion of her husband – a few days after, he died  — whereupon the widow exclaimed, “What a gracious saint is Raboni, he even gives us more than we pray for.”

OLIVER CROMWELL

It was said that Oliver Cromwell, the English statesman and soldier, usually said the following grace (prayer) before meals: “Some people have food but no appetite others have appetite, but no food. I have both. The Lord be praised”.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Dr Franklin, when a child, found the long graces (prayer before meal) used by his father before and after meals very tedious. One day after the winter’s provisions has been salted: “I think, father, said Benjamin, “If you were to say grace over the whole cask (barrel storing alcohol), once for all, it would be a vast saving of time”.

PREACHER’S LIST

The new preacher had finished his sermon in which he had listed all the human wants that he thought the Lord should gratify.

The deacon asked the old janitor, who had listened patiently throughout this sermon, if he did not think the minister had offered a good prayer.

“Ah, most certainly does, boss. Why that man asked the Lord for the things the other preacher didn’t even know He had”
