From the book, “Life and Labour of The People of India” by Abdullah Yusuf-Ali, Barrister at Law, Year 1907, London)

India Water_Siva

“As the social life of the men centres round the Lambardar’s (Village headman) reception room, so the social life of the women centres round the village well, to which they go to draw water. The graceful figure of the village maiden, with two or three pots of different sizes–the smallest on the top poised on her head, going to the river to fetch water, has been so familiarised in Daniell’s pictures that it is scarcely necessary to describe it in words, but the social chatter which takes place at the well claims a little of our attention.

In the first place it must be realised that the water supply of a village which is some distance from a stream or river (a description that would apply to a vast number of villages) is not derived from any water-works, but from deep holes dug und to a depth of 15 to 30 feet, according to the spring level. The vertical hole thus made in the soil is lined with masonry. When the masonry tube is well sunk in, a ceremony is performed which is analogous to that of the going of a bride to the husband’s house. The well is supposed to be a living being, and she is married to the god of the locality. No one is allowed to drink water out of it until the installation has taken place in due form. It is attended with some picturesque ceremonies, and forms quite an event in village history.

The exterior of the well is built up in the form of a round platform with an opening into the well in the centre. On this platform are fixed two or three poles, or a framework with a pulley and ropes, to help people to draw water. The mouth of the well is sometimes covered with a wooden grating to prevent accidents, as men and women have been known to lose their balance and fall into the water. The favourite mode of suicide, by the way when an Indian woman finds herself unhappy in her married life on account of differences, not with her husband, but with her mother-in-law is by jumping down a well.

village well, google

The usual gossip of the women, morning and evening, is around the village well. It is the ladies’ club, as exclusive as the aristocratic clubs of London. The higher castes have wells of their own, to which no lower class people are allowed to go to draw water.

The conversation which usually takes place among the elder women when they are present is about the enormities or failings of the younger women who are their daughters-in-law. If they are absent when they are gone, then comes the turn of the young wives to compare notes about their respective mothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, not often to the advantage of these relatives of the husband. Thus you will see the village well looms very large in the social history of the Indian women; but it would require a whole volume to enlarge upon the romance of the well.

It will be remembered that even so in England, in the age of chivalry and romance, great many legends gathered around wells. These still linger around the holy wells in Cornwall and Ireland. Southey wrote a famous ballad on the well of St Keyne, and the scene of one of Sir Walter Scott’s novels is laid in the midst of the motley society that come to “take the cure” at St Roman’s well.

The men also come to the well, but the morning and evening hours are sacred to the women. These hours are usually avoided by the men out of respect to the fair sex. The most perfect decorum and even privacy is observed these matters in the village. Though the village women go about freely, there is never any molestation of them, and the men, in their own rough and ready way, show a chivalrous not noticed by those who only look at life from a superficial point of view.

well, bargarh Dt., new IE

All crimes, social or legal, against women in a village, are committed by strangers, but they are not many. Of course, the lot of the Indian women requires improvement in many ways but so does that of the Indian man, and, taking them altogether, we ought to be very cautious in judging either sex. Their lives are as possible under the circumstances. The social evils of the joint family system are responsible for much friction between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, and for many attempted suicides on the part of the latter; but that is a large question, and need not detain us here.

It may be asked: If the men do not come to the well to draw water, and if they have their own meeting places in the village, why should they come to the well at all? The answer is that the water which the women draw is mostly for drinking and cooking purposes. The bathing is all done at the well. Ablutions form a great feature in Oriental life. Every Hindu of the better classes is supposed to bathe before every meal, and he does bathe at home, but comes not to the well, divests himself of all his clothes except his loin cloth, and pours water over his head and shoulders. This is all done quite publicly in the open air. It is generally done on platform round the mouth of the well the and sometimes the dirty water finds its way in. One of the problems of public sanitation in the administration of the villages is to make the platforms in such a way that the dirty water cannot possibly find its way in, but must all flow out. The best way is to have separate bathing platforms round about the well. But, even so, the water that flows out is apt to stagnate round the well, percolating through the soil, and eventually affecting the purity of the water in the well. There is no systematic drainage of the village streets, and all sanitary reforms in the villages have first to deal with this particular evil.

GALAXI

(Post No.3030)

rigveda_front

the vedas

உண்மையான வார்த்தைகள்;

 rig

What is Agni Cayana? 10,800 Bricks in Five Layers!! (Post No.3029)

Vedic Hindus were great mathematicians. Even in the construction of Yaga kundas (Fire Altars for sacrifice) they used geometry. They wanted mathematical precision even in Fire sacrifices. Probably this is the reason Egyptians borrowed Hindu knowledge for constructing the Pyramids or actually imported Hindus for the construction (Please read my article ‘Did Indians build Egyptian Pyramids?’)

“Agni Cayana is a rite of piling the fire altar, included in Soma sacrifices, in five layers with bricks, on the uttaravedi for setting up the Ahavaniya; it is represented in the Satapata Brahmana as a human imitation of the cosmic world of the Prajapati.

tortoise

The heads of five animals are built up into the altar, and the trunks are thrown into water. Bricks of the altar are prepared with this water. Anthill clay is mixed with the earth of a pit. The first brick is prepared by the sacrificer’s wife. The sacrifice prepares a fire pan and three bricks. There after other bricks are made and burnt.

After the diksha the building of the altar begins. The altar may be of several shapes e.g. suparna (eagle), syena (hawk), drone (trough). The bricks have different shapes: traiangular, oblong, square etc. the bricks are given different names. They are laid accompanied with mantras, and in a definite pattern, for which a knowledge of geometry is required.

Of the five layers, the first, third and fifth layers are of the same pattern, while the second and the fourth follow a different pattern. The ground on which the altar is erected is measured with a rope and ploughed.

At the lowest level a golden figure of a man is placed. The total number of bricks for all the five layers is 10,800; each layer is covered with thick mud.

A living tortoise is placed on a layer. Various other materials, e.g. mortar, pestle, pan, winnowing basket are placed in different positions.

The time taken for piling varies from 8th months to 12 months or five consecutive days.

The main authority on the rite is Satapata Brahmana which devotes five out of 14 kandas – more than one third of the book”.

Tamil Mystery solved!

My comments: There is a verse in Sangam Tamil literature (Akananuru verse 361) where a simile about a tortoise is not explained by any one Tamil commentator correctly. After reading the above passage of placing a live tortoise on a layer, we know what the simile is about. Akananuru is a book which deals with family life and sex and so a simile about fire sacrifice and a tortoise going out of the fire altar to a cool pond has been a puzzle! Now it is solved!

Hermann's tortoise shutterstock_78129739

The reason for the poet to use such a simile in a lover’s song is the lover is compared to the tortoise and the arid area he was travelling was compared with the fire altar. The cool pond is his wife/lady love.

From this simile we come to know another thing, i.e. the tortoise is allowed to go free. It was not sacrificed in the fire. Otherwise the poet would not have used it in this context. It elucidates another thing as well. 2000 years ago all these fire sacrifices were a common place in the Tamil speaking world. Otherwise the poet wound not have used it in a lover’s song.

There is more significance to this Agnicayana rite. The Indus valley civilization used more bricks than any other civilization that too in a geometrical pattern. The Indus city streets and drainages were constructed in an orderly pattern. This shows the people who constructed mathematical fire altars and the buildings in the Indus cities were the same people. Already we have another proof in the Indus bull seals. The cow is praised sky high in the Vedas and the Bulls are shown more in the Indus seals, but the cow is completely absent. It has been a great mystery. Probably cow is considered holy and so the cow was not used in any images in the Indus- Saraswati valley civilization. This is another proof to show that the Vedic Hindus were the one who lived in the Indus-Saraswati valley.

buildings

10,800 has a great significance from the Vedic days until today. 1008 (Sahasranama) for every Hindu god is used in the temples. 108 (Ashtottara sata) names is used in houses for pujas. Added together it gives number 9 that has got lot of magical properties (please see my earlier article on this subject).

A lot of Vedic rituals are not explained or understood properly today. Unfortunately, we have very few scholars now to explain them correctly. Most of us read or have access only to the rubbish commentaries written by foreigners. I will try to unravel the Vedic secrets as far as possible.

buildings

Lord Shiva has at least 1008 names and one of them is Tripuraantaka. The meaning of Tri+Pura+Antaka is one who has destroyed Three Forts. This story is referred to in the epics, Puranas (mythology) and the 2000  year old Sangam Tamil Lierature (Puranaanuru 55).

tripura

There was a demon named Taraka and he had three sons Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmali. They did a penance towards Brahma and got three floating forts as a boon. Our Puranas describe the forts as staying in the sky without any support and flying as well. The three demons were harassing the Devas and they prayed to Lord Shiva to take action against the demons.

Shiva told them that he would destroy the forts. The condition required to destroy the forts is that all the three should be in one straight line. Shiva made the flying (moving) forts to come in a straight line and fired them with his arrow of fire.

My comments:

The story is a clear indication that Hindus had orbiting space stations or at least the concept of flying stations. Since they came to earth and troubled the devas and people, we come to know that the forts acted like space shuttles. Shiva’s third eye sends laser weapons and so they might have been destroyed by laser weapons.

More comments:-

This story explodes the Aryan- Dravidian myth. Throughout Hindu literature we see that the demons also pray to Hindu gods and get boons from the Trinity. It shows that they were also ardent Hindus but with bad motives. The story of Demons, Devas and men is also in the oldest Upanishad where they get the Upadesa.

Also note that the names of demons are always in Sanskrit. This also explodes the myth of ‘demonisng’ Dravidians. Demons are not Dravidians.

350px-Shiva_Tripurantaka

Also note that the ancient Tamils were very familiar with this story. It is in the oldest Purananuru (verse 55) and other literature of Sangam period and later Kambaramayana.

surasamharan

tripura

(The Gita is the universal mother. She turns away nobody. Her door is wide open to anyone who knocks.)

circa 1871: Thomas Alva Edison (1847 – 1931) American scientist, inventor and industrialist.

Manufacturing Anecdote

Alfred O.Tate was riding one afternoon through central jersey when Edison pointed from a ridge to a lovely valley through which a stream meandered.

Tate, said Edison, see that valley?

It is a beautiful valley, Tate replied.

Well, said the inventor, I am going to make it more beautiful. I am going to dot it with factories.

4719 Parts in a Car!

A New Yorker on one of the Ford Motor Company’s tours of inspection for visitors lagged behind the party at one point and found himself  alone with Henry Ford. Ford nodded to him; then pointing to a completed automobile, said, there are exactly 4719 parts in that car.

Greatly struck with Fords grasp of affairs– and with his own — the visitor, talking subsequently with one of the company’s engineers, asked him lightly if it were true such and such a model had exactly 4719 parts.

I am sure I don’t know, the engineer said,

I can’t think of a more useless piece of information.

Who is running the company?

One of Chauncey Depew’s stories:

Some years ago, a few days after I had sailed for Europe, a man went into my office and said,

“I want to see Chauncey Depew

He has gone to Europe, my coloured porter told him

Well, I want to see his secretary

He has also gone to Europe

Then I want to see Cornelius Vanderbilt

He is in Newport

Oh, I guess I want to see W K Wanderbilt

He is also in Newport.

You don’t tell me. Well, may I see the first Vice President?

He is out of town

Is the third Vice President in.

No, he is in Europe

Is the superintendent I A?

No, he is up the road some where

How about the general passenger agent?

He has gone to Cape May

Who in thunder is running this road, anyway?

I guess it do be running itself.

Two Kinds of Reports!

An assistant rushed into William S.Knudsens officiate one day, very upset because a certain report was missing. How could they act?

There are two kinds of reports, Knudsen said calmly

One says you can’t do it. The other says it has been done. The first kind is no good. The second kind you don’t need.

When Charles M Schwab had not yet become a great man in his own right in the field of steel, he worked for Andrew Carnegie.

The little Scotsman taught him the hard lesson of the commercial world, that one day’s laurels are of little use on the next.

All records broken yesterday, Schwab wired to his chief.

In reply to which, Carnegie telegraphed, what have you done today?

Don’t get too busy!

A sage bit of advice is contained in a rebuke delivered to no less a personage than William Jeffers, head of the Union Pacific Railway, by one of his employees.

Jeffers was traveling in his official car.

At a certain stop, the engineer dismounted from his cab and came into the president’s car and asked him a question concerning some details of their immediate route. Being preoccupied with some papers before him, Jeffers absently gave an obviously erroneous reply.

Angrily the engineer snorted, “that doesn’t make sense. Don’t ever get so busy that you haven’t got time to think”.

Whereupon he turned and strode back to the cab.
