Kapinjala Bird Mystery in Rig Veda

Written by London swaminathan
Post No.1060; dated 23rd May 2014.

This article is the second part of “Ode to Skylark: Shelley, Kalidasa and Rig Vedic Poet Grtsamada” that was posted yesterday.

I have made the following points in my article posted yesterday:
1.Grtsamada’s poems/hymns on Kapinjala in the Rig Veda (2-42,2-43) are the oldest Ode to a bird, at least 3500 years before Shelley’s ‘Ode to a Skylark’.

2.Kapinjala bird is not francolin partridge but Jacobin cuckoo which is identified with Cataka bird, that which longs for and drinks rain drops. Bhartruhari, Adi Shankara, Kalidasa, Sangam Tamil poets and others used it in their poems.

3.The hymn says it was sung in praise of Indra in the form of a Kapinjala bird. Since Vedic hymns have hidden meaning or allegorical or symbolic, it is possible that Supreme God (Indra) is compared with a bird.

4. Birds’ omens have been followed by our fore fathers from Vedic days. Kapinjala i.e. Cataka was used for this purpose according to Grtsamada and Kalidasa.

Two Interesting Stories

The soul is identified with a bird in the Upanishads. Tamil Veda Tirukkural also confirms it (Tirukkural 338).

There are two interesting stories about the Kapinjala bird and one of them is in the Sixth book of Devi Bhagavatham. When Indra killed Three headed Viswarupa, three groups of birds came from his three heads Kapinjala (who drinks water), Kalavingka (sparrows) and Tittiri (partridges). Birds are always used as symbols in Hindu mythology. Here, the Kapinjala stands for the soul that drinks the rays of spiritual sun. Three heads were drinking Soma ,Sura and Anna representing Devas, Asuras and Human beings respectively. So Kapinjala was associated with Indra in the Rig Veda.

kapinjala2

Buddha also identified himself with Kapinjala bird in one of the stories. This Jataka story has two versions one as Kapinjala and another as Partridge (Tittiri Jataka). The Tibetan version which is followed in Bhutan goes like this: once upon a time an elephant came to take rest under a banyan tree. After some time a monkey came to the tree. The elephant objected to monkey being there. Elephant argued that the tree belonged to it because it came first.

The monkey asked the elephant whether it had seen any fruits on the tree. When the elephant said it did not see any fruits, the monkey said when it came for the first time it ate the fruits of the tree and so the tree belongs to it. After some time a rabbit hopped and said it belonged to him because when it came the tree did not even have shoots and it was only a sapling. Then both the elephant and the monkey bowed to the rabbit saying it was their friend and a senior. Before they finished their conversation, a Kapinjala bird on top of the tree shouted that it belonged to it because the tree actually grew out of the seed that it spat a long time ago. Then all the three animals bowed to the bird accepting it as their Big Brother. All the four became friends and helped one another to get the fruits of the tree. The story finishes saying that the bird Kapinjala was Bhodisatva in its previous birth.

paint kapinjala

It is a known fact that the Buddhists around Fourth Century BCE wrote about 547 Jataka tales using all the ancient Hindu tales. All the Hindu characters or Hindu Kings or the Hindu fables were ‘’Bhuddaized’’ by them just to spread their religion. Even the Ramayana and Mahabharata stories were used by them by altering the stories. Agastya was turned into Akitti! Some of the stories were distorted so that no one could recognize them. So Bhodisatva here replaces the Supreme God of Hinduism. Ultimately Kapinjala means Supreme God or the Soul or the most intelligent spiritual aspirant.

Hindus always use Nature, particularly animals and birds, to teach higher values. We can see the swan in Chandogya Upanishad, numerous birds and animals in Adi Shankara’s poems and animate and inanimate things in the Dattatreya episode of Bhagavata. We have Taittiriya Upanishad in the name of Tittiri (Parrot or partridge) and the Buddha’s original Jataka was Tittiri Jataka which the Tibetans changed to Kapinjala.

cataka 1
Written by London Swaminathan
Post No.1059 : dated 23rd May 2014.

(இந்தக் கட்டுரையின் ஆங்கில வடிவில் (Ode to Sky Lark: Shelley, Kalidasa and Vedic Poet Grtsamada) எல்லாப் பாடல்களையும் விரிவாகக் கொடுத்துள்ளேன்.

Ode to Sky Lark: Shelley, Kalidasa and Vedic Poet Grtsamada

cataka 1

Written by London Swaminathan
Post No. 1058; Dated 22nd May 2014.

It is very interesting to study and compare the poems on birds by Rig Vedic sage Grtsamada, India’s greatest Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, Sangam Tamil poets and English poet P.B Shelley. Among these poets, Shelly is always associated with the sky lark. But singing odes to birds started several thousand years before Shelly, that too on the banks of River Saraswati. The author of Second Mandala of the Rig Veda is sage Grtsamada. This Mandala is considered one of the oldest Mandalas of the Veda. Some scholars dated it to 1700 BCE. Life of Grtsamada is itself mysterious. He is said to belong to two Gotras. His poem about a bird called Kapinjala is more mysterious. I will discuss the mystery of Kapinjala separately. But in the following article I will simply compare Kapainjala with sky lark and Cataka bird.

Nearly 2000 years after Grtsamada, Kalidasa, Adi shanakara and the Sangam Age Tamil poets sang about the sky lark. Nearly 1500 years after these poets, PB Shelley came on the scene to sing about the same bird.

Is Kapinjala of R.V. a sky lark?
What is Kapinjala? It is a bird identified by early scholars as francolin partridge. I don’t agree with this identification. Going by the words and description, it is the Cataka bird of Sanskrit and Tamil literature. Kapinjala means that which drinks water.

Cataka : “Some people identify it with the Jacobin cuckoo (Family- Cuculidae, Genus-Clamator). Because of its persistent and peculiar call, it is also known as the brain fever bird. The cataka is believed to subsist only on rain drops; as it disdains to drink any other water, it has become a symbol in literature of pride and self respect; it is associated with clouds and rain; to see a cataka on the left is a good omen; in stanza 9 of Maghadutam, three good omens are listed: the cataka bird on the left, a gentle breeze and hen cranes eager for mating.” (from Kalidasa -The Loom of Time by Chandra Rajan)

Meghadutam of Kalidasa :–

“as you loiter along, and here on your left
The cataka in its pride sings sweetly” (verse 9)

“Siddhas watching catakas
Skilled catching falling rain drops” (verse 23)

“Without a sound you offer catakas
The water they crave” (verse 113)

Implored by catakas tormented by great thirst
And hanging low weighed down by large loads of water (Rtusamharam 2-3)
There many more references in sakuntalam , Raghuvamsam and Vikramorvasiyam)

The Kapinjala is also associated with water and omens. So it is not francolin partridge, but it is Cataka.

What is the Mystery?
The second part of this article will deal with the mystery of this bird. Why Indra is called a Kapinjala? Why Buddha was called a Kapinjala in the Jataka story? Why Devi Bhagavatham Purana says that Kapinjala came from the head of Vritrasura? Was astrology (Bird predictions) practised in the Vedic period?

First, let us read the poem from the R.V.
“The hymn is addressed to Indra in the form of a Kapinjala, the bird which we call the Francoline partridge”: Ralph T H Griffith in book The Rig Veda

vedabhasya
Mandala 2, Hymn 42
1.Telling his race aloud with cries repeated, he sends his voice as his boat a steersman.
O Bird, be ominous of happy fortune; from no side may calamity befall thee.
Let not the falcon kill thee, nor the eagle; let not the arrow bearing archer reach thee.
Still crying in the region of the fathers, speak here auspicious, bearing joyful tidings.
3.Bringing good tidings, Bird of happy omen, call thou out loudly southward of our dwellings,
So that no thief, no sinner may oppress us, Loud may we speak, with heroes in assembly.

Mandala 2, Hymn 43

1.Here on the right sing forth chanters of hymns of praise, even the winged birds that in due season speak.
He, like a Sama chanter utters both the notes, skilled in the mode of Trstup and of Gayatri.

2.Thou like the chanter priest chantest the Sama,Bird; though singest at libations like a Brahman’s son.
Even as a vigorous horse when he comes near the mare, announce to us good fortune, Bird, on every side, proclaim in all directions happy luck, O Bird.

3.When singing here O Bird, announce good luck to us, and when thou at sittest still think on us with kind thoughts

When flying off thou singest thou art like a lute. With brave sons in assembly may we speak aloud.

From the above hymn three things are clear:
1.It is a song bird 2.It is a bird of omen 3)It is in the region of fathers (sky)
When we compare this with cataka of Kalidasa it is matched without any difficulty. The very name Kapinjala makes it clear that it longs for water. Sangam Tamil literature copied Kalidasa in several places. Following are the descriptions of Cataka in Tamil literature:

jacobin-cuckoo_

Skylark in Sangam Tamil Literature
A bard awaiting with hopes the kind of munificence of a benefactor compares himself to the skylark that longs for drops of rain – Puram 198 sung by Vatamavannakkan Perisatan

The skylark sings while soaring in the sky longing for rain – Kali 46
It suffers in the absence of seasonal rain – Aink. Line 418

There is a reference to the skylark that longs for rain and the poet mentions it as “tuli nasai pul”( puram 198 vatamavannakkan perisatan)
Aink-418, aka.67, kali 46, pura 196, Patina-3/4

So far I have made it clear that Grtsamada,Kalidasa and Sangam Tamil poets sing about the same bird Kapinjala=Sataka= Thuli Nasai Pul in Tamil.

Now compare it with the beautiful poem by P B Shelley:

Ode to a Skylark by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)
Sky lark is a different bird, but the approach of the poet to the bird is same as Grtsamada’s Kapinjala. So we can boldly say that Grtsamada started this genre:

Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!
Bird thou never wert-
That from Heaven, or near it,
Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains of unpremeditated art.

Higher still and higher
From the earth thou springest
Like a cloud of fire;
The blue deep thou wingest,
And singing still dost soar, and soaring ever singest.
Skylark 08 (Shay Connolly)

In the golden lightning
Of the sunken sun,
O’er which clouds are brightening,
Thou dost float and run,
Like an unbodied joy whose race is just begun.

The pale purple even
Melts around thy flight;
Like a star of Heaven,
In the broad day-light
Thou art unseen, but yet I hear thy shrill delight–

Keen as are the arrows
Of that silver sphere,
Whose intense lamp narrows
In the white dawn clear
Until we hardly see, we feel that it is there.

All the earth and air
With thy voice is loud,
As, when night is bare,
From one lonely cloud
The moon rains out her beams, and Heaven is overflowed.

What thou art we know not;
What is most like thee?
From rainbow clouds there flow not
Drops so bright to see
As from thy presence showers a rain of melody:-

Like a poet hidden
In the light of thought,
Singing hymns unbidden,
Till the world is wrought
To sympathy with hopes and fears it heeded not:

Like a high-born maiden
In a palace-tower,
Soothing her love-laden
Soul in secret hour
With music sweet as love, which overflows her bower:
shelley
Picture of P B Shelley

Like a glow-worm golden
In a dell of dew,
Scattering unbeholden
Its aerial hue
Among the flowers and grass, which screen it from the view:

Like a rose embowered
In its own green leaves,
By warm winds deflowered,
Till the scent it gives
Makes faint with too much sweet those heavy-winged thieves:

Sound of vernal showers
On the twinkling grass,
Rain-awakened flowers,
All that ever was
Joyous, and clear, and fresh, thy music doth surpass.

Teach us, Sprite or Bird,
What sweet thoughts are thine:
I have never heard
Praise of love or wine
That panted forth a flood of rapture so divine.

Chorus hymeneal,
Or triumphal chant,
Match’d with thine would be all
But an empty vaunt,
A thing wherein we feel there is some hidden want.

What objects are the fountains
Of thy happy strain?
What fields, or waves, or mountains?
What shapes of sky or plain?
What love of thine own kind? what ignorance of pain?

With thy clear keen joyance
Languor cannot be:
Shadow of annoyance
Never came near thee:
Thou lovest: but ne’er knew love’s sad satiety.

Waking or asleep,
Thou of death must deem
Things more true and deep
Than we mortals dream,
Or how could thy notes flow in such a crystal stream?

We look before and after,
And pine for what is not:
Our sincerest laughter
With some pain is fraught;
Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.

Yet if we could scorn
Hate, and pride, and fear;
If we were things born
Not to shed a tear,
I know not how thy joy we ever should come near.

Better than all measures
Of delightful sound,
Better than all treasures
That in books are found,
Thy skill to poet were, thou scorner of the ground!

Teach me half the gladness
That thy brain must know,
Such harmonious madness
From my lips would flow
The world should listen then, as I am listening now—P B Shelley

Post No.1057; Dated: 22 May 2014.

carl-jung-four-functions

Vedic Poet Medhathithi’s Quotations

rveda

Post No:- 1056; Dated 21st May, 2014.

Rig Veda, the oldest religious scripture in the world, is full of mysteries. Even the foreign “scholars” who tried to translate the hymns very often added in the foot note, “the meaning is not clear”, “the meaning is obscure” etc. Some deliberately misinterpreted the hymns to suit their fanciful Aryan-Dravidian Race theories and sex fantasies. One must always read what Indian saints like Shankaracharya, Dayananda Saraswati, Sayana and Bhatta Baskara say about Vedas. We must respect our mother, father, Guru and what they have believed in the past thousands of years. The Vedic sages said they love to speak in mysterious language. Some hymns may be allegorical, some may be symbolic, some may be open statements and others may be in coded language.

The hymns 12 to 23 in the First Mandala are ascribed to sage Medhathithi, Son of Kanva. Following are some of the quotations from his hymns:

1.Fire kindles fire and so does poetry, youth and home life (RV 1-12-6 & 1-14-7)

2.The Valiant perishes not (1-18-4)

3.He is longing to send fortune to those who deserve (1-17-6)

4.The works of Gods are mysterious (1-18-6)

5.Not verily is there a God nor a man to know all your great wisdom and deeds. Supreme is your glory (1-19-2)

6.Noble causes on which wealth may be spent (1-17-6)
7.Fight against sin, ignorance, illness (1-18-2)

8.Ribhus: young and elderly (matured), who have truth in their thoughts and straightforwardness in their actions (1-20-4)

9. Asvins: Beautiful combination of honey and truth (1-22-3)
(This reminds us of Truth and Beauty sung by Keats and Sweetness and Light sung by Mathew Arnold; also Satyam, Sivam, Sundaram by Hindi poet Jai Shankar Prasad, great poet of Bengal Rabindranath Tagore; and in the recent days propagated by Sri Sathya Sai Baba)

Manu even went to the extent of saying Vedas contain that was needed in the past, and for present and future. We have to wait for a great intellectual –a new Adi Shankara– to tell us what is going to happen in future with the help of the Vedas.

Taurus web

Why did Sangam Tamils marry on Rohini Star day?

taurus_constellation_map
ALDEBARAN= ROHINI

Written by London Swaminathan
Post No.1054; Dated-20th May 2014.

Tamil Sangam Literature which is 2000 year old is full of Hindu stories and Hindu beliefs. Even if all the Sanskrit scriptures disappear overnight, Tamil Sangam literature with over 2000 poems by 400+ poets is enough to give all the Vedic and Upanishidic thoughts. The oldest anthology Purananuru is full of Hindu customs. But we have more Tamil anthologies on sex and family life than war and day today life. One among them is Akananuru which has got two beautiful poems on ancient Tamil weddings.

Akananuru verses say that the Tamil marriages were celebrated on Rohini star (Star Aldebaran in conjunction with the moon) days. Tamils strongly believed in astrology and Hindu mythology. This belief is found in Vedic literature, Valmiki Ramayana and dramas of Kalidasa. This also debunks the Aryan-Dravidian Race theory. Indian culture has been the same from the Himalayas to the southernmost Kanyakumari from time immemorial!

Tamils might have borrowed it from the works of Kaliadsa who lived in the first century BCE. (See my earlier six posts on the topic of Kalidasa and Tamil literature).

Moon goes around earth and completes one full circle in 27 days. Ancient Hindu astronomers noticed that there are 27 star clusters in its path. Just to explain it to laymen they told some allegorical stories. They told that the moon has 27 wives meaning 27 ‘nakshatras’ i.e star clusters or constellations. Whenever the moon is “near a star” (not in real terms; it looks like it is near a particular star) we call that is the asterism of the day. Rohini is one of the 27 stars.

Though the moon takes only 27 days for one circle, we must remember that the earth is also going around sun and it goes forward by two and half days in that period. So it takes 29.5306 days what we call a lunar month. We have divided this period into two parts as Krishna/black Paksha and Sukla/white paksha.
Taurus web

Rohini is called Alpha tauri or Aldebaran. It is very bright red in colour. It can be seen near the Pleiades constellation. Pleiades is Krittika nakshatra with six stars. No one can miss it. Rohini is called the dearest wife of moon in Hindu mythology. Today we can’t see why it was called the dearest. But at one time in the past, probably the paths of the earth and the moon in the backdrop of the fixed stars in the heavens were such that the time taken by the moon to cross the “home of Rohini” (constellation) used to take a little more time or it might have come “very close to Rohini”.

In Vedic times the sky looked differently. Balagangadhara Tilak has explained it in detail in his book ‘’The Arctic Home in the Vedas’’ and said that the Vedas were composed sometime in 6000 BCE. According to the ancient writers like Panini, the month Markazi/Margasheersa was the first month of the year at one time.
(Stars are billions and billions of miles away from the earth and the moon. What we describe is the way it ‘appears’ when we look up in the night time)

Hindus have another story about why the moon is increasing and decreasing in size every fifteen days (Sukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha). The gods were angry with the moon for being partial to Rohini and cursed the moon would wax for 15 days and wane for 15 days (actually it is 29 and half days). Hindus teach all astronomy lessons through allegorical stories such as Rahu devouring moon (eclipse) etc. This is their way of teaching science. (I have already explained it in “Is Brahmastra a Nuclear Weapon?” and “Ancient Engineers of India”).

ROHINI in Valmiki Ramayana and Kalidasa
Rohini, as an auspicious star for weddings, is already in the Vedic literature: Bodhayana Grhyasutra and Manava Grhyasutra. Aithareya and Satapata Brahmana mention Rohini asterism (Vedi Index Vol.1,page 415). Valmiki Ramayana has many similes such as ‘Rohini sasinam yatha’ and ‘Chandramso Rohini’ in several places (5-33-7;5-24-10;5-37-24;5-15-22 etc).

Kalidasa also mentions the conjunction of Rohini with moon in several places:
“By Fortune’s grace, you now stand before me,
O,Lady of the most gracious face!
Like Rohini in conjunction with the Moon
Appearing at the end of an eclipse” (Sakuntala, 7-22)
Other references are in Ragu14-40, Vikrama Urvasiyam 3-4, 3-12
Tamils have reference to Rohini with the moon in Tirumurugu-7/88; Nedu.163; Puram60 and 160)

Tamil Weddings ( I give below an excerpt from my previous post)
Two thousand year old Sangam Tamil literature describes Tamil Hindu weddings in two beautiful verses in Akananauru (verses 86 and 136). The poets bring the wedding ceremony in front of our eyes. Anyone who reads those poems can visualise that day. It is like a live running commentary.

In the first verse (86), poet Nallavur Kizar describes the food and the dress. There was a huge heap of rice cooked with black gram (Pongal). There was a wooden shed (pandal) with fresh sand from the river banks spread. Since they believed in astrology and auspicious days, it was celebrated on the day when Rohini star was with the moon. Since they were orthodox Hindus they lighted lamps even though it was celebrated in the day time. Bridegroom and bride were adorned with flower garlands. Some women were carrying the pots on their head, others bearing new, broad bowls, handed them one after another, while fair elderly dames were making noise. Mothers of sons, with bellies marked with beauty spots, wearing beautiful ornaments, poured water on the bride, so that her black hair shone bright with cool petals of flowers and rice grains (probably yellow rice called Akshatai). They blessed her saying ,’do not swerve from the path of chastity, be serviceable in various ways to your husband who loves you and live with him as his wife. They greeted her ‘Dirgha Sumangali Bhava: in Tamil– Per Il Kizaththi Aguka’–.On the night after the marriage ceremony was over, the neighbouring ladies assembled and sent her to the arms of her lover, to which she went with trepidation ( This is the Shanti Muhurtham alias First Night).

Aldebaran= Alpha tauri = Rohini

In another verse136, poet Vitrutru Mutheyinanar says, white rice well cooked with plenty of ghee was served generously to the elders. Since Tamils believed in astrology, the poet remarks, the omens shown by the birds were propitious. It was a bright morning. The moon was in faultless conjunction with the Rohini star. The marriage house was decorated. They worshiped God. The big drums sounded with wedding tunes. Excited women were peeping without a wink with their flower like eyes at the bride who had been bathed. The image (to be worshiped) was made of big flower petals. Clear like a gem that has been well washed, was placed on the soft Vagai flower with the double leaf and the Arukam grass. It was decked with cool, sweet flower buds and white thread clothed with holy cloth, so as to look grand. The bride was seated on the fresh sand under the Pandal ( A thatched shed made over a row of wooden poles). The bride was perspiring with loads of ornaments. They fanned her to dry the wet.( I have used the translations given in History of the Tamils by PT Srinivasa Iyengar).

What is very clear in the above two Sangam Tamil verses is the Tamils believed in God and astrology. They used lot of vegetarian food and flowers during weddings. Ornaments and decorations, respect for elders are all like modern day weddings. The bride wore a thread (protective Kaappu) and new dress after a shower. Music was part of Tamil Hindu weddings.

Tamil epic Silappadikaram says that the marriage of Kannanki and Kovalan took place on the day moon approaching Rohini(Mankala vazthu patal).

யுங் தனது ஹிப்நாடிஸ மருத்துவ முறையை ஆரம்பித்த காலத்தில் நடந்தது இது;

carl jung
