Sanskrit literature touches every subject matter under the sun. The poets even composed couplets on fools and idiots. By reading such Slokas/couplets, we can easily identify the fools. We learn from them not to behave like fools.

To illustrate stupidity, Sanskrit literature use the simile of a person sitting on the top branch of a tree and cutting down the trunk. Even the great poet Kalidasa was described as stupid in the beginning and becam a great scholar by the grace of Goddess Kali.

Stupid Lady at Shakespeare’s Birth Place

Stupidity is not the monopoly of any particular race or religion though we hear lot of jokes about a particular community or religious group.

A lady visiting Stratford –on-Avon, the birth place of Shakespeare, showed even more than the usual fervour. She had not recovered when she reached the railway station, for she remarked to a friend as they walked on the platform: “To think that it was from this very platform the immortal bard would depart whenever he journeyed to town!”

Following story is from my previous article:

Story from a Tamil Proverb

The story goes that a certain man who was the important person in a town lost his mother. A lot of people came to console him and said, “O, Your mother was a great person. She was a mother to everyone. Now the village will be like a motherless child”. This is the Tamil way of consoling. One of the youths among the crowd was a fool. He did not know anything, but just pretended to be intelligent by imitating everyone. He also said the same thing to the grieving VIP. It went on very well for a time. But one day another important person in the town lost his wife. Now that he knew what to say in such a bereavement, he first went to express his condolences. He blindly followed the previous condolence message, “ O, Your wife was a great wife. She was not only wife to you but was wife to everyone in the village. Now the villagers look like a wifeless husband”. The people who watched him saying this, thrashed him and threw him out!

I am pretty sure that every one of us would have done something foolish in our life. That is not unusual. But repeating the same mistake will push us into the category of FOOLS!

Here below is the identification of stupid people:

Duuratah sobate muurko lambasaataptavrutah

A fool looks bright from a distance, with long beautiful attire around him.

(If anyone goes near him, they can easily recognise him as an ignoramus; Tip top dress won’t save him)

Taavascha sobate muurko, yaavatkinchinna bhaasate – Hitopadesa

As long as a fool doesn’t open his mouth he shines!

Na sobate sabaamatye hamsamadye bhako yataa

A fool in the assembly (of learned) is like a crane amidst swans.

Apanditaanaam sangoabydayavibangah

Friendship with the unlearned is the end of good things.

Artho gato ghoshamupaiti nuunam

Empty vessels definitely make much noise

Asubam vaakyamaadatte puriishamiva suukarah – Mahabharata

Kashtam kalu muurkatvam – Chanakya neethi

Is it not difficult to be a fool?

VIVEKANANDA

MILLIONS OF VIVEKANANDAS WILL APPEAR!

SANTHANAM NAGARAJAN

Millions of Vivekanandas will appear!

Swami Vivekananda never thought himself as Great. But he is one of the very few Avatars who saw His fame spread far and wide.

He speaks about himself thus:

Do you think that there will be no more Vivekanandas after I die!… There will be no lack of Vivekanadas, if the world needs them – thousands and millions of Vivekanandas will appear – from where, who knows! Know for certain that the work done by me is not the work of Vivekananda, it is His work – the Lord’s own work! If one governor-general retires, another is sure to be sent in his place by the Emperor. (CW 5.357-358)

WHAT SWAMIJI BELIEVE

I believe in GOD, and I believe in man. I believe in helping the miserable. I believe in going even to hell to save others. (CW 5.357-358)

Of course I would commit a crime and go to hell forever if by that I could really help a human being! (W 5.357-358)

I may have to be born again because I have fallen in love with man. (CW 5.357-358)

I do not believe in a God or religion which cannot wipe the widow’s tear or bring a piece of bread to the orphan’s mouth. (CW 5.357-358)

I have nothing whatever to do with ritual or dogma, my mission is to show that religion is everything and in everything. (CW 5.357-358)

Chicago Success – How?

In my first speech in this country, in Chicago, I addressed that audience as “Sisters and Brothers of America”, and you know that they all rose to their feet. You may wonder what made them do this, you may wonder if I had some strange power. Let me tell you that I did have a power and this is it – never once in my life did I allow myself to have even one sexual thought. I trained my mind, my thinking, and the powers that man usually uses along that line I put into a higher channel, and it developed a force so strong that nothing could resist it. (CW 9-408)

A Power from this Body!

During the lectures a power used to emanate from this body and would infuse the audience. (CW 8-499)

Political orators are not known for their gentle remarks when attacking an opponent. A particularly vicious example of this is the remark made by John Randolph about Edward Livingston.

“He is a man of splendid abilities, but utterly corrupt. Like a rotten mackerel by moon light, he shines and stinks.”

Xxx

Roosevelt Heckled

Once Theodore Roosevelt was making a political speech during one of his campaigns, when a heckler interrupted him from the large crowd with a repeated and slightly inebriated cry, “I am a Democrat”.

Roosevelt was generally a dangerous man to heckle. Pausing in his speech and smiling with oriental unction, he leaned forward and said, “May I ask the gentleman why he was a democrat?”

The voice replied, “My grandfather was a Democrat, my father was a Democrat, and I am a Democrat”.

Roosevelt said, “My friend, suppose your grandfather had been a jackass, and your father had been a jackass, what you would be?”

Instantly the reply came back, “A Republican!”

Go and Take Rest!

Fellow citizens, said the candidate. I have fought against the (Red) Indians. I have often had no bed but the battlefield, and no canopy but the sky. I have marched over the frozen ground till every step has been marked with blood.

His story told well, till a dried up looking voter came to the front. Did you say that you had fought for the Union?

Yes, replied the candidate.

And against the (American) Indians?

Yes, many a time, said the candidate.

And you had slept on the ground with only the sky for a roof?

Certainly.

And your feet bled in marching over the frozen ground?

That they did, cried the exultant candidate.

Then I will be darned if you hadn’t done enough for your country. Go home and rest. I will vote for the other fellow.

Pretending Candidate

A candidate for a minor county office had depicted himself as a true man of the people. A delegation once called on him at his country home. The candidate received them in his shirtsleeves and with a pitchfork in his hand. Saying that he was busy, he consented to talk with them if they would conduct the little meeting in the barn, where he had some hay to pitch into the loft. They all trotted down to the barn but found no hay there.

“Hiram”, asked the candidate of his hired man, “where is the hay?”

“Sorry, sir”, was the man’s reply. I have had time yet to throw it back since threw it up for yesterday’s delegation”

COUNTING HORSE! : THE MATHEMATICAL WONDER OF ANIMAL WORLD

SANTHANAM NAGARAJAN

Elberfeld Horses are considered to be the ‘mathematical wonders of the animal world’.

The case was described by Dr E.Clarapide, of Geneva University as ‘THE MOST SENSATIONAL EVENT THAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WORLD”.

The discovery of equine mathematical genius was made by William Von Osten in 1891. He was an old schoolmaster. He trained his horse by new methods and had produced remarkable results.

Kluge Hans was taught to count skittles by striking with his hoof as many times as there were skittles on the table. Von Osten first pronounced the numbers loud and later wrote them on a blackboard. The results soon proved to be astonishing!

The horse began to perform mathematical operations!

 Schoeller_Elberfeld

Osten died of grief from suggestions of trickery, which have been later proved to be unjust.

When Osten died in 1909 his work was continued by Herr Krall, a jeweller of Elberfeld. Krall gave some years of patient application to teaching those of his own horses which exhibited the best aptitude by the same methods.

He trained four horses Muhamed, Zarif, Berto and Hanschen, the latter blind. The horses not only learned the fundamental mathematical operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, but after only four months training extracted square and cube roots and learned to spell!

They answered questions by stamping with their hoofs.  To give the number 34, for instance, they struck three times with the left and four times with the right hoof.

Krall’s book ‘Denkende Tiere’ stirred the world of science. One commission after another came to his stables. Many scientists persisted in stubborn negations, many went away in awe and wonder.

Maurice Materlink, Belgian playwright and poet (birth 28/8/1862 death: 6/5/1949) paid a visit. Muhamed after a formal introduction, phonetically spelled out his name with his hoofs, solved almost instantaneously problems of which even Materlink did not know the answer, refused to give a square root of a chance number which was afterwards found to have none and expressed thoughts and feelings by spelling.

The procedure was to choose cards with letters on them.

One day Muhamed “Squealed”: The groom struck Hanchen.  Sometimes they  said that they were tired and would not answer.

In the experiments care was taken to exclude the possibility of mind-reading. As a precaution to prevent signals the questions were sometimes asked by telephone, the receiver being hung on the ear of the horse, frequently the problem was written on the blackboard and the horse left alone to solve it, sometimes the figures were traced with a  finger on the animal’s back!

It was a curious fact that after six months of schooling the horses made no further progress.

Among those scientists who testified to the reality of the facts were: Dr Edinger, the eminent neurologist of Frankfurt, Dr H Kramer and Dr H.E.Zeigler of Stuttgart, Dr Paul Sarasis of Basele etc.

 jimbrochure

Krall also experimented with a young elephant, Kens, but the beast was too lazy to learn.

On the counting horses no satisfactory explanation was ever reached.

Story on Counterfeit Coins

My teacher at Setupati High School, Madurai (Tamil Nadu, India) taught us a simple thing. When you see a counterfeit coin or currency note, never ever circulate it. Destroy it because It produces a chain reaction of cheating:

  1. Someone gave me a fake coin and cheated me; I get angry and frustrated.
  2. But to revenge that cheater, I cunningly pass it on to another person in the darkness or when the other one was not alert. That way I also become a criminal by circuiting the false money.
  3. The person who received try the same thing. So one coin or fake currency creates hundreds of cheaters.

My teacher V G Srinivasan voluntarily took such fake coins or currency notes and cut them in to two and threw them into dust bin or drainage so that no one else could use it. Though he lost the money, he tried to create a better society. From the day I learnt it from him, I have been following it. In London coins of several countries change hands every day because of tourist traffic. Sometimes the coins which look like British coins come to my hand. Immediately I add them to my old coin collection. If I get counterfeit currency I destroy them.

When I read a story told by Swami Ramdas of Anandhashram, I am reminded of my teacher who is no more.

Nine  Counterfeit British-pound Coins

Here is the story:

A saint was earning his bread by stitching clothes. A person, who got a great quantity of cloth prepared into garments by this saint, used to pay him for the work in counterfeit coins. The saint was quietly accepting the bad coins although he knew them to be false.

One day the saint had to go out on some work, leaving his shop in charge of the servant. At that time, the patron came for getting the clothes made. And, as usual, he offered some bad coins. These the servant returned saying, “These are bad coins. Give me good ones.”

When the saint returned, his servant said, “A certain man from the town had come to deceive me by paying  counterfeit coins.”. The saint replied: “Why did you not take the false coins? He is always paying me such coins which I accept readily. I am burying them all underground. If I not accept them, you know, other people will be cheated by him.”

That is how saints serve the society.

(It does not mean that we have to keep quiet when a person continuously cheats some one or the society. We have legal ways to trap such people and punish them.)

Thanks for the pictures.

Don’t use pictures. Don’t reblog for at least a week.

A travelling salesman was anxious to gain admission to the office of a prominent industrialist, the establishing of business relations with whom would be the highlight of his whole trip. But the man in question was difficult to see. Entering his outer office, he gave his card to the secretary. It was taken within and, through the partly opened door, the salesman saw the executive tear it in half and throw it into the waste basket.

The secretary returned meanwhile and stated that her employer would not see him. “May I have my card back?” asked the salesman. Slightly embarrassed the secretary reported to her superior who sent her back out again with a nickel (coin) and a message that he was sorry, but the card had been destroyed. More than equal to the occasion, the salesman drew another card from his wallet and gave it to the girl.

“Take this back to him,” he said “and tell him that I sell two cards for a nickel.”

He got his interview and he got his order!

I sell Brains, not Trunks!

An advertising salesman arrived at a large Chicago hotel and took a room. He carried with him only a small grip and the hotel porter asked for the tags for his trunks.

“I have none”, said the salesman.

“Why, I understood you was a salesman”, said the porter.

“That is right, I am. But I don’t need any trunks. I sell brains”.

The porter scratched his head and said, “Well, Sir, Boss, you is the first travelling salesman what ‘sever come here without no samples.”

May I speak to your mother?

“I owe my success as a salesman”, said the speaker, addressing the gathering of young men being trained for this profession, “to the first five words which I invariably utter when a woman opens the door, ‘Miss, may I speak to your mother?”
