Be like a Crow! and Indian Politics! Tiruukural Encyclopaedia Chapter 53 Cherishing one’s Kith and Kin
Points to Ponder
Valluvar says “Be like a Crow; when you get something, don’t enjoy it all alone!” Hindus are great nature lovers! Bhagavad Gita used tortoise for self control; Manu and Valluvar used heron to strike at right time. A Sanskrit sloka said six thigs one should learn from a crow. Dattatreya gave us a list of Nature teachers; Valluvar used Anicham flower as similes in a few couplets. He used Yak which will die if the hair is removed. This list is a long list. From Rig Vedic Vaatsalyam (affection between calf and cow) to the latest scriptures, we get lot of animal phrases as well. Sangam Tamil poet Kabilar listed 99 flowers at one go! (all these things are dealt with in my articles separately in this blog).
In short, Hindu literature has hundreds of Wordsworths!
***
INDIAN POLITICS
Last two couplets in this chapter echo what is happening in Indian political Scene today!

• Sir Thomas More coined the term in his 1516 Latin book Utopia. He combined the Greek words ou (“not, no”) and topos (“place”) to mean “no place,” while also playing on eutopia (“good place”).
• Core Idea: It represents a society free from major human evils like poverty, greed, corruption, and suffering, featuring balanced laws, equality, and peace.

சோர்வு இல,விளம்பு புள் துவன்றுகின்றது;

ரமணர் அருளிய அருள் மொழிகள்;;;
221) Silence : Grace
The highest form of grace is silence. It is also the highest spiritual instruction… All other modes of instruction are derived from silence and are therefore secondary. (page 133, The Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi in His own words by Arthur Osborne)
222) Future of the World
Why should you worry about the future? You don’t even know the present properly. Take care of the present and the future will take care of itself. (page 106, The Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi in His own words by Arthur Osborne)
223) Are our Prayers are granted?
Yes, they are granted. No thought will ever go in vain. Every thought will produce its effect some time or other. Thought force will never go in vain. (page 65, The Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi in His own words by Arthur Osborne)
224) Rebirth
If there is birth there must be not only one re-birth but a whole succession of births. (P45, Day To Day with Bhagavan by A.Devaraja Mudaliar)
225) What is awareness?
You are awareness. Awareness is another name for you. Since you are awareness there is no need to attain or cultivate it. (P76, Day To Day with Bhagavan by A.Devaraja Mudaliar)
226) Namaskar
This Namaskar was originally meant by the ancient sages to serve as a means of surrender to God. The act still prevails but not the spirit behind it. The doer of Namaskar intends to deceive the object of the worship by his act. It is mostly insincere and deceitful. It is meant to cover up innumerable sins. Can God be deceived? (P682, Talks with Sri Ramana Maharishi Vol III, by Munagala S. Venkatramaiah)
227)Scriptures
The scriptures serve to indicate the existence of the Higher Power or Self and to point the way to it. That is their essential purpose. Apart from that they are useless. (page 9, The Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi in His own words by Arthur Osborne)
228) Mouna Diksha
Yes, Mounda Diksha is the highest form of Diksha (page 652, Talks with Sri Ramana Maharishi Vol III, by Munagala S. Venkataramaiah)
229) Are there restrictions to be observed in food?
Sattva Food taken in moderation. (page 685, Talks with Sri Ramana Maharishi Vol III, by Munagala S. Venkataramaiah)
230) What are the good ways to be shown to the mind?
Thought of God. (page 690, Talks with Sri Ramana Maharishi Vol III, by Munagala S. Venkataramaiah)

219
மூழை எனப் பொலி மொய் பில வாயாள்;
ஊழி நெருப்பின் உருத்தனை ஒப்பாள்;

பேசினன்;அங்கு அவள் பேசுற நாணாள்;

214. பேர்ந்தான்,நெடு மாயையினில் பிரியா;
ஈர்ந்தான்,அவள் நாசி பிடித்து,இளையோன்;

சரணம் சார்ந்தனன்;
பழந்தனம் இழந்தன படைத்தவரை ஒத்தாள்;

நாப்பண் வந்துற்றான்;
பார் புகு நெடும் பகு வாயைப் பார்த்தனர்;
மூளும் சாபத்தின் முந்திய தீவினை முடித்தான்;

AIRPLANE TOOK OFF FROM THE RUNWAY AT THIS POINT
தெரிந்தது,அத்திண்தேர்;

அதற்கு ஏற்ற இசையையும் பின்னால் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளவேண்டும் ( Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1993) டைனோஸரஸ் வருவதற்கு முன்னர், எப்படி ஸ்டீவன் ஸ்பீல்பர்க் பயங்கர இசை கொடுத்து நம் மனதில் திக் திக் உண்டாக்கினார்)

தன் மதனோடு தன் வெம்மை தணிந்தாள்;

Points to ponder:
Valluvar has taken the role of the Chairman of Board of Directors of a big company and give instructions to his Employment Officers.
Very practical instructions to run any business, whether it is a small or a big company.
I am pretty sure these are also in Kautilya’s Arthasastra.
