PASCAL – A born mathematician
Pascal’s genius for geometry began to appear before he was even 12 years old, in the room where he passed his hours of play. He procured a piece of charcoal, and drew diagrams on the floor, trying to make a circle, perfectly round, a triangle with equal sides and angles, a perfect parallelogram and like thing. He discovered all this unaided and then turned his attention to the properties of these figures and their mutual relations and proportions. But as his father had with such great care concealed from him all mathematical works, the poor boy did not even know the names of the figures he drew.
Compelled to make his own definitions he called a circle ‘a round’ and a line a ‘bar’ etc and with these very primitive definitions, proceeded to construct his axioms, till at last he wrought out complete demonstrations!
Step by step he advanced in his studies, one discovery opening the door to another; and so far did he push his researches, that without ever seeing a mathematical work, he got to the thirty second proposition of the book of Euclid.

USELESS MATHEMATICIANS!
Edison approached the mathematical aspects of his science with that same practical instinct and native ability that characterised every other phase of his work. He often succeeding in beating the mathematicians on his staff to the draw in search for correct formulae, seeming to arrive at his conclusions through infallible instinct and native genius.

இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்த கிரேக்க தூதன் மெகஸ்தனீஸ், சீன யாத்ரீகர்கள் யுவான் சுவாங் பற்றியெல்லாம் நாம் அதிகம் படித்திருக்கிறோம். ஆனால் ரஷ்ய-இந்திய உறவுகள் பற்றி அதிகம் அறிந்ததில்லை; இதோ சில சுவையான தகவல்கள்:-
ரஷ்ய மொழியில் நிறைய ஸம்ஸ்க்ருத மொழியின் செல்வாக்கைக் காணலாம். முன்காலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட நூல்களில் தாவர வகைகள்,பிரணிவகைகளின் குறிப்புகள் நிறைய உள்ளன.
இதன் பிறகு பர்லாம்- ஜோஸப் கதைகளில் புத்தரின் வாழ்க்கை பயன் பத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.
முதலில் ரஷ்யர்களுக்கு இந்தியாவுடன் நேரடி தொடர்பு இல்லை. எல்லாம் பாரஸீகம் (ஈரான்) மூலமாகவே ஏற்பட்டது.
இந்ந்தியாவின் ஜாதி முறைகள், பஞ்ச தந்திரக் கதைகள் முதலியன ரஷ்ய நாட்டுப்புற கதைகளில் தாக்கத்தை உண்டு பண்ணின. ஈரானிய ,பல்கேரிய படைப்புகள் இதில் பெரும் பங்காற்றின.
மஹா அலெக்ஸாண்டரின் (The Romance of Alexander by Pseudo Callisthenes) காதல் லீலைகள் என்ற புத்தகத்தில் 11, 12 ஆவது நூற்றாண்டு தொடர்புகள் தெரிகிறது.
இதைத் தொடர்ந்து போலந்து, ஹாலந்து நாட்டினர் எழுதிய பழைய பூகோளப் புஸ்த்கங்களிலும் பல விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன.
தொல்பொருட் துறை சான்றுகள்
ரஷ்யாவின் கீவ் (Kiev இப்போது உக்ரைன் நாட்டின் தலைநகர்) கிடைத்த நாணயங்களும், பிற பொருட்களும் இந்திய- ரஷ்யத் தொடர்பை உறுதிப்படுத்தின. அவை எட்டு ஒன்பது நூற்றாண்டுகளைச் சேர்ந்தவை.
வால்கா (River Volga) நதியின் முகத்வாரத்திலுள்ள இடில்-கஜரான் (Itil-Kazaran) துறைமுகம் வழியாக நடந்த வணிகத்தை அராபிய வட்டாரங்கள் உறுதிப் படுத்துகின்றன.
14- ஆவது நூற்றாண்டில் இந்திய சுல்தான்கள், ரஷ்யாவுடன் வணிகத்தொடர்பு வைத்தனர். கியாசுதீன் துக்ளக் (1320-25)ஆட்சியில் , அவருடைய ராணுவத்தில், ரஷ்யர்கள் இருந்ததை ‘துக்ளக்நாமா’ என்னும் நூல் குறிப்பிடுகிறது.
ரஷ்ய அரசர் வாஸிலி இவனோவிச்சின் (Vasily Ivanovich) அரசவைக்கு, மொகலாய மன்னர் பாபரின் தூதர் க்வாஜா ஹுஸைன் 1532-ல் வந்ததை நிகனோவ்ஸ்காயா க்ரானிக்கிள் என்னும் நூல் காட்டுகிறது.
இவான் தி டெர்ரிபிள் (Ivan The Terrible, 1533-84) என்ற ரஷ்ய மன்னர் ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில், இந்தியாவுடனான வணிகத் தொடர்பு வளர்ந்தது. மாஸ்கோவில் இந்தியப் பொருட்கள் குவிந்தன.
ஓர்ஸ்க்(Orsk) என்னும் இடத்தில்கிடைத்த வெண்கலப் பாத்திரத்தில் 16ம் நூற்றாண்டு குருமுகி லிபி எழுத்துக்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன.
1615-16-ல் இந்திய வணிகர்கள் ஆஸ் ட் ரா கான் (Astrakhan) என்னும் இடத்தில் ரத்தினக் கற்கள், வாசனைத் திரவியங்கள் முதலியவற்றில் வியாபாரம் செய்ததோடு லேவாதேவி (வட்டிக்கு கடன் கொடுக்கும் வியாபாரம்) செய்ததும் தெரிகிறது.
பீட்டர் தி க்ரேட் (Peter The Great, 1689-1725) காலத்திலும் வணிகம் வளர்ந்த செய்திகள் நிறைய உள்ளன.

இந்தியாவுக்கு விஜயம் செய்தது பற்றி (1471-1474)
மூன்று கடல் கடந்த யாத்திரை என்ற நூலில் அபனாஸி நிகிடின் என்பவர் எழுதினார். இதுதான் ரஷ்யாவில் வெளியான இந்தியா பற்றிய முதல் விரிவான நூல். அவர் வால்கா நதிக் கரையிலுள்ள் ட்வேர் (Tver- Kalinin காலினின்) என்ற ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த வணிகர். இந்த நூல் புகழ்பெற்றதால் இதை சோபிஸ்காயா க்ரானிக்கிள் என்ற தொகுப்பில் சேர்த்துவிட்டு அந்த படைப்புகளை, நிகிடின் இறந்த பின்னர் மாஸ்கோவுக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றனர். அந்த அளவுக்கு அதற்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது.
அவர் எல்லா வார்த்தகர்களும் செல்லும் வழியில், முதலில் இரானுக்குச் சென்றார். அங்கிருந்து இந்தியாவுக்குப் பயணமானார். அவர் எதையும் உன்னிப்பாக கவனிப்பவர். ஆகையால் எந்தெந்தப் பொருட்கள் எங்கு விளைகின்றன, அவற்றின் விலை என்ன, வாசனைத் திரவியங்கள், மிளகு ஆகியன எங்கு அதிகம் கிடைக்கும், குதிரைகளின் விலை என்ன– என்றெல்லாம் எழுதிவைத்தார். அவர் வெறும் வியாபாரி அல்ல. அறிவு வேட்கை உடையவர். ஆகையால் அனைத்துத் தகல்களையும் சேகரித்துப் பதிவு செய்தார்.
கான்ஸ்டாண்டிநோபிளில் உள்ள ஜஸ்டீனியச் சக்ரவர்த்தி சிலையை இந்திய சிலைகளோடு ஒப்பிடுவார். இந்தியப் பண்பாடு, விஜயநகர சாம்ராஜ்யம், பாமினி சுல்தான் ஆட்சி ஆகியன பற்றி அவர் குறிப்பிட்டவை வரலாற்று முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த செய்திகளாகும்.
பொய் சொன்னாலும் பொருந்தச் சொல்
ரஷ்ய அதிபர் நிகிடா குருஸ்ஷேவ் 1955ம் ஆண்டு இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்தார். அப்போது பிரதமர் நேருவிடம் நிகிடின் (Nikitin) காலம் முதலே நம் இரு நாடுகளும் தொடர்பு கொண்டிருந்தன என்று பெருமை பேசினார்.
அட அப்படியா! அவருக்கு ரஷ்யாவில் உரிய கௌரவம் அளிக்கப்பட்டதா? என்று நேருஜி கேட்டார்.
அட, அதை ஏன் கேட்கிறீர்கள்? அவர் பிறந்த ட்வேர் (Tver) என்னும் ஊரில் அவருக்கு சிலையே வைத்திருக்கிறோம் என்றார் குருஷேவ்.
உண்மையில் சிலை எதுவும் இல்லை!
பின்னர் குருஷேவ் ஒரு போன் அடித்து உடனே நிகிடினுக்கு சிலை வைக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்யுங்கள்; நேருஜி ரஷ்யா வருவதற்குள் சிலை இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று கட்டளை போட்டார். பின்னர் என்ன?
கம்யூனிஸ்ட் தலைவர் சொல்லுவது போல சிலை வைக்காவிடில் அதிகாரிகளின் தலை அல்லவா போகும்.
இதுதான் நிகிடின் சிலை உருவான வரலாறு

சென்னைக்கு வந்த லெபிடேவ்
கல்வித்துறையில் உருவான இந்திய- ரஷ்ய ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்களின் படைப்புகள் மிகப்பல.
முக்கியமான ஒரு விஷயம் ஜெராஸிம் லெபிடேவ் (Gerasim Lebedev) 1749-1817) வின் ஈடுபாடு ஆகும். இவர் முதலில் வந்தது சென்னை மாநகருக்கு. அங்கு இரண்டு ஆண்டுகள் தங்கியதால் கொஞ்சம் தமிழ் கற்றார். ஆனால் பின்னர் கல்கத்தாவுக்குச் சென்று வங்காளி மொழியில் மூழ்கிவிட்டார். ஏற்கனவே பிரெஞ்சு, ஜெர்மன், ஆங்கிலம் தெரிந்த அவருக்கு மொழி ஆராய்ச்சியில் ஈடுபாடு ஏற்பட்டதில் வியப்பு இல்லை.
லெபெடேவ் பிறந்த ஊரிலிருந்து செயின்ட் பீட்டர்ஸ்பர்க் சென்றவுடன் இசைத்துறையில் ஆர்வம் கொண்டார். தானாகவே வயலின் கற்றுக் கொண்டார். ஒரு இசைக் குழுவில் சேர்ந்து வியன்னா வரை சென்றார். பின்னர் அவர் ஆங்கில ‘பாண்டி’ல் (English Band) சேர்ந்தவுடன் 1785ம் ஆண்டில் சென்னைக்கு வந்தார். அந்தக் குழுவுக்கு அப்போதைய சென்னை மேயர் ஒரு வரவேற்பும் கொடுத்தார்.
ஈராண்டுக் காலம் சென்னையில் தங்கிய அவர் கொஞ்சம் தமிழ் கற்ற பின்னர், கல்கத்தாவுக்குச் சென்று வங்காளி மொழியையும், ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதத்தையும் பயின்றார்.

கலகத்தாவில் கோரக்நாத் தாஸ் என்பவரிடம் வங்காளி மொழியைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டு அவருக்கு வயலினும் ஐரோப்பிய இசையும் கற்பித்தார். முதல் முதலில் இந்திய ராகங்களை மேலை இசைக் கருவிகளில் புகுத்தியவர் லெபிடேவ். ஐரோப்பிய பாணியில் நாடக அரங்கை உருவாக்கி வங்காளி நடிகர்களை நடிக்க வைத்தார். வங்க மொழிப் படைப்புகளை ரஷ்ய மொழியில் மொழி பெயர்த்து வங்காளி-ரஷ்யன் அகராதியையும் வெளியிட்டார். ரஷ்யாவுக்குத் திரும்பிச் செல்லும் வழியில் லண்டனில் தங்கி இந்திய மொழிகள் பற்றி நூல் வெளியிட்டார்.
ரஷ்யா சென்ற பின்னர், செயின் ட் பீட்டர்ஸ்பர்க்கில் தேவ நாகரி, வங்காளி லிபிக் அச்சுக்கள் கொண்ட அச்சகம் வைத்து நூல்களைலை எவெளியிட்டார். வங்காளி மொழிக்கு இவர் செய்த சேவையை நினைவு கூறும் முகத்தான் கல்கத்தாவில் இவரது நினைவுப் பலகைகளும் எழுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளன.
1795-ல் ஹிந்து தியேட்டரை (நாடக அமைப்பு) உருவாக்கினார்.
நிகிடின், லெபிடேவ் ஆகியோர் இந்திய பண்பாட்டுக்கு ஆற்றிய சேவை சிறப்பானவை.

ஏசு கிறிஸ்து இந்திய முனிவர்களிடம் பாடம் கற்றதை தற்கால பைபிளில் வெட்டிவீட்டனர்.அவருடைய 20 ஆண்டு இளமைப் பருவத்தைச் சொல்லாமல் ஏசு, மீண்டும் வந்தார் என்று பைபிள் சொல்கிறது அவர் 12 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு இமய மலையில், முனிவர்களிடம் பாடம் கேட்டதாக நிகலஸ் நோட்டோவிச என்ற ரஷ்ய பயணி எழுதிவைத்துள்ளார். அவர் திபெத்திய நூல்களை இதற்கு ஆதாரமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளார்.

உலகெங்கும் பரவி இருந்த சிவலிங்க வழிபாட்டை ஆதார பூர்வமாக நிரூபிக்கும் ஒரு கட்டுரையை பல்லவி தாகூர் எழுதியுள்ளார்.

கி.மு. 2 முதல் 7-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு முடிய வட இத்தாலி எடுரியா என அழைக்கப்பட்டு வந்தது. இத்தாலியில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட பல அகழ்வாராய்ச்சிகளில் பல “பீடமுள்ள கற்கள்” – அதாவது சிவலிங்கங்கள் – கண்டு பிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. வத்திகனில் கூட ஒன்று கிடைத்துள்ளது.இன்னும் பல சிவலிங்கங்கள் வத்திகனில் உள்ள பிரம்மாண்டமான சுவர்கள் மற்றும் தூண்களுக்கு அடியில் புதையுண்டு இருக்கக் கூடும். 5000 ஆண்டு பழமையான சிவலிங்கம் ஹரப்பாவில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது.
1940ஆம் ஆண்டு புதைபொருள் ஆராய்ச்சியாளர் எம்.எஸ். வாட்ஸ் 5000 ஆண்டு பழமையான மூன்று சிவலிங்கங்களைக் கண்டு பிடித்தார். (ஒரு அரிய பழைய போட்டோ ஹரப்பாவில் அகழ்வு நடக்கும் போது தோண்டி எடுக்கப்பட்டதைக் காண்பிக்கிறது.)
வியட்நாமில் சிவலிங்க வழிபாடு!
புராதன சிவலிங்கம் வியட்நாம் எங்கும் கண்டு பிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. துடிப்பான வேத நாகரிகத்தின் ஒரு வீடு வியட்நாம்! பல்லாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான சிவலிங்கங்கள் வியட்நாம் எங்கும் காணக் கிடைக்கின்றன.இது வேத நாகரிகம் உலகெங்கும் பரவி இருந்தது என்பதற்கான இன்னும் ஒரு ஆதாரமாகும்.
ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் சிவலிங்கம்
தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்ட சிவலிங்கமானது 6000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பேயே ஆப்பிரிக்கர்கள் சிவனை வழிபட்டதற்கான சான்று ஆகும். புதைபொருள் ஆய்வாளர்கள் தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் சுட்வாரா என்ற குகையில் 6000 ஆண்டு பழமையான கருங்கல்லினால் ஆன சிவலிங்கத்தைக் கண்டுபிடித்துள்ளனர். இவ்வளவு ஆண்டுகள் அந்தச் சிவலிங்கம் எப்படி அப்படியே இருக்கிறது என்று பிரமித்தனர்.
