Lasting Record Stands!

A Name in the Sand
By Hannah Flaff Gould (1789-1865)

[Born in Lancaster, Mass., 1789. Died at Newburyport, Mass., 1865.]

ALONE I walked the ocean strand;

A pearly shell was in my hand:

I stooped and wrote upon the sand

My name—the year—the day.

As onward from the spot I passed,
5

One lingering look behind I cast;

A wave came rolling high and fast,

And washed my lines away.

And so, me thought,’twill shortly be

With every mark on earth from me:
10

A wave of dark oblivion’s sea

Will sweep across the place

Where I have trod the sandy shore

Of time, and been, to be no more,

Of me—my day—the name I bore,
15

To leave nor track nor trace.

And yet, with Him who counts the sands

And holds the waters in his hands,

I know a lasting record stands

Inscribed against my name,
20

Of all this mortal part has wrought,

Of all this thinking soul has thought,

And from these fleeting moments caught

For glory or for shame.

Lasting Record Stands!

I am not a scientist! I am business man!

Thomas A Edison never forgot his role as a business man. The profit motive was an essential part of his temperament. Once he said practically to a friend referring to a newspaper article which discussed him as a scientist,
That is wrong. I am not a scientist. I am an inventor. Faraday was a scientist. He didn’t work for money, he said he hadn’t time. But I do. I measure everything I do by the size of a silver dollar. If it doesn’t come up to that standard, then I know it is no good.

Cunning Edison

The late Thomas A Edison had a very beautiful summer residence in which he took great pride. One day he was showing his guests about, pointing out all the various labour saving devices on the premises. Turning back toward the house it was necessary to pass through a turn style which led on to the main path. The guests soon found out that it took considerable force to get through this device.
Mr Edison, one of his guests asked, how is it with all these wonderful modern things around, you still maintain such a heavy turnstile?

Said Mr Edison, his eyes lighting up with laughter,
Well, you see, everyone who pushes the turnstile around pumps eight gallons of water into the tank on my roof.

Sacked for Killing Rats!

I got fired twice, said Edison.
The first time was when I was a telegraph operator. It was my fault, alright, but I got so interested in the dinged machine and its workings that I began to see how I could improve it. But I forgot all about the messages that were coming over the wire, and I left a lot of messages unsent and undelivered. Of course, they discharged me and I didn’t blame them, he added.

Then he laughed again, I got a job in an office, and there were a fearful lot of rats; terribly old office, you know. I got up a thing that killed them like flies— the same with cockroaches. The floor used to be covered with dead roaches and they fired me for that.

Thomas A Edison, sacked twice, business man

(Post No.5720)

அனுமனைச் ‘சொல்லின் செல்வன்’ என்று போற்றுவதற்குக் காரணம், அவன் ஒரு பத்திரிக்கையாளன் போல – journalist ஜர்னலிஸ்ட் போல- எழுத, பேச, சொல்ல வல்லவன். சீதை எங்கு இருக்கிறாள் என்று அறிய பல்லாயிரம் குரங்குகளை எண் திசைக்கும் ஏவிய இராமன், சீதை பற்றிய செய்திக்காக காத்திருந்தபோது, அனுமன் வந்தவுடன் சொன்ன செய்தி ‘கண்டனன் சீதையை’ என்பதாகும். அத்தைப் பாட்டி கதை சொல்லுவது போலச் சொல்லாமல், பத்திரிக்கை தலைப்பு போல ‘கண்டேன் சீதையை’ என்றான். இராமன் அவனை கட்டி அணைத்தான். இது பழைய பாடல். அதை இப்போது அனுமன் நினைவு கூறுவதன் மூலம் அந்தக் காட்சியும் அதன் முக்கியத்துவமும் மீண்டும் வருகிறது;

(Jason Fung).

Nitisataka 34,35,36

The lion, though young, attacks the mighty elephant The energy of the noble minded man proceeds from his natural disposition, not from his youth. It is the nature of the brave to aspire for the highest even when young. Indeed, age is no criterion for greatness.

Age is no bar for attaining name and fame. This is proved by Hindu mythological characters such as Dhruva, Prahlada, Markandeya and Vedic boys like Nachiketas , Aruni and Satyakama Jabala . Great philosophers hers like Shankara attained fame when they were  young. Tamil saint Sambandar composed poems when he was 3 years old.

Age is No Bar -Authors who wrote before they were 30

Japanese Novelist Abe Kobo started to write at the age of 24. He won a prize when he was 26

Wealth is more important than Virtues!

Two great poets emphasize the importance of wealth in their books.

I give below translation of the same couplets by two authors.

Wealth of kindliness is real wealth.
Material wealth is possessed by even the basest— Kural 241

The best of all possessions is the wealth of compassion
For the meanest of men too possess worldly wealth- Kural 241

As those without riches can have no enjoyments in this world so also are those without the grace of compassion denied the blessings of the world above— Kural 247

Even as happiness in the world depends wholly on material possessions
Happiness in the world beyond will surely depend upon compassion-Kural 247

Both Bhartruhari and Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar agree on the point that material possessions account was for happiness on this earth..

Both the poets say that even the basest of men possess wealth.

In another couplet Tiruvalluvar in his Tirukkural say

The demon of poverty, when he overtake s one, the joys of this life
As well as the next one are lost to him -1042
Infernal poverty blasts the joys of the earth and of heaven- 1042

Our noble birth may go to the lower regions; our virtues may perish; our moral character may fall as if from a lofty mountain; our family may be consumed by fire; a thunderbolt may strike our might as it were an enemy; let us keep our money, for without this all the collected virtues are but a heap of grass.

If a man be wealthy, he is of good family he is wise, he is learned in scriptures, he is virtuous, eloquent, handsome. All the virtues attach themselves to gold.

The importance given to the rich people has not changed from the ancient times; we see the same state of affairs even today. Money power boosts one to higher positions and higher awards.

(Post No.5716)

32.O ye that dwell on earth! Riches are like the banks and the hollows formed by a river, changeable and inconstant. Therefore, give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty; such charitable actions will tend to make the quality of the mind elevated and noble.

We take three more slokas from the Niti Sataka and analyse and compare them with other poems.

Here in the following three couplets Bhartruhari deals with geology and oceanology. Hindus believe that the earth is on the head of a big snake, sometimes described as 1000 headed snake called Adi Seshan. The poet says that the snake is born by tortoise and the tortoise is held in position by the sea floor. Though Kalidasa and others also said the same, we don’t know the science behind it. When Vishnu is projected as lying on the snake bed in the Milky Ocean, we assume that they are talking about the ocean of Time. Greeks say that Atlas is holding the earth on his shoulders.

But the other two slokas are based on true science.

Indra is said to have cut down the wings of the flying mountains. Later they settled down under the floor of the ocean or elsewhere. This is a clear reference to geological changes that the earth encountered through its millions or billions of years’ history. We knew now that the Dinosaurs became extinct after one big asteroid hit the earth 6 million years ago. In those days more asteroids and meteorites were hitting the earth than today. Later it was stopped. Though millions of meteorites hit earth even today, most of them are burnt in the atmosphere. But in geological ages it was a different scene and the flying mountains were asteroids. The asteroids that fell in the sea or displaced and pushed into sea are the ones like Mainak parvat mentioned in the sloka.

I don’t mean all the submarine mountains are asteroids or displaced by asteroids; but some must be that led to the story of Mainak flying away from the Himalayas. They already know the long and continuous chain of submarine mountains which they gave the name Chakravala.

The second is about the Suryakanta gem that emits fire at the touch of sunlight. Now we know they are magnifying glass or lens which can focus sunlight and produce fire. We read in the Greek history that they were able to burn sailing ships by focusing sunlight through lens.

Ancient poets used symbolic language to express their thoughts and views; they created stories for the laymen; for an example, they told the laymen that the snake is devouring sun or moon during eclipse, but they knew it’s the shadow of earth that creates the eclipse. They calculated it and forecast eclipses well in advance. Another example is that they calculated the movements of planets for astrological predictions.

They gave scientific names to planets. The name Sanaischaran for Saturn means slow moving. Saturn takes thirty years to complete one round around sun. They named the largest planet Jupiter as Guru. Guru means heavy, large etc.

Only now the scientists are using the gravitational power of the Jupiter (Guru), known as sling shot  effect to boost the rockets or satellites. But Guru means one who boosts you into orbit of spiritual world with his power. So we have rightly named Jupiter as Guru. I have already written about the future predictions of Hindus in my earlier articles (about other planets).

Here are the relevant three slokas. Just to teach simple morals, Bhartruhari use these similes which shows common men were well aware of these things even in the days of Bhartruhari:–

  1. Sesha bears all the worlds placed on his serpent-

like head: he himself is always borne on the back of the king of the tortoises, who dwells, held without difficulty, in the bounds of ocean. Ah! with what ease do the mighty perform great marvels !

  1. The son of Himalaya would have behaved far more

nobly if he had allowed enraged Indra to cut off his wings with the thunderbolt breathing forth huge masses of flame, and had not, when his father was helplessly subject to calamity, sought a refuge by throwing himself into the ocean.

  1. The sun-stone, though insensate, is kindled into

light when touched by the rays of the sun: how then

should a mighty man bear an injury inflicted by another.
