Vedic Origin of Thousand Pillar Halls in Indian and Mayan Culture!

Most magnificent Thousand Pillared Hall in Madurai.

Decimal system was invented by the Hindus. We have got hundreds of references to decimal numbers such as 1000, 10,000, lakh and crore in the Vedic scriptures and post Vedic Hindu scriptures. One of the architectural wonders of the world is Thousand Pillar Mandap (hall) in South Indian Temples. It originated in the Rig Vedic period and went up to Central America.

All the thousand pillared halls in the South Indian temples are sculptural museums.

Madurai, Rameswaram, Srirangam, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram and several other temples of Nayak period have got huge stone halls called 1000 pillar Mandapas. The celebrated thousand pillar mandap/hall in Madurai has 985 pillars now. It was erected in 1569 by Aryanatha Mudaliyar, whose statue riding a horse is at the entrance. The hall is measuring 76.2 metres by 73 metres. There is a central shrine for lord Shiva in his dancing form. There are beautiful sculptures on every pillar. On ceiling near the entrance there is a wheel which gives the cycle of sixty years of the Tamil calendar. Aryanatha Mudaliyar who built this huge mandap was the minister for 71 years under four Nayak kings. Probably he was the minister who served the longest period in Indian history or world history. He served them between 1529 and 1600 CE.
Thousand-Pillar-Hall--
Glorious Hall of 1000 pillars in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

The Madura hall is famous for its Kuravan-Kurathi statue (nomads) with a basket on Kurathi’s houlders. The workmanship of it is unparalleled. She has a child on her bac , one inside the basket and a third clinging on to her breasts. Kuravan is loaded with jewels according to the custom of his clan. Puranic King Harichandra and queen Chandramathi are sculpted in one pillar. Rati-Manmatha, Kannappa and Pandava brothers are also sculpted beautifully. There are 22 pillars in a corner which emit different musical notes when struck with a piece of stone or metal.

Ferguson in his “Indian and Eastern Architecture” says, “it is not the number of pillars but their marvellous elaboration that makes this hall the wonder of the place”.
Thousand pillar mandap in Srirangam is larger than Madurai mandap. Measuring 152 metres by 48.8 metres, it contains 953 granite pillars. As in Madurai each pillar has got beautiful sculptures and the pillars are monoliths.

Andhra Pradesh/Telengana

Andhra Pradesh and Telengana in South India have many temples with ‘1000 pillared’ halls. They are older than the Nayak halls of Tamil Nadu. Thousand pillared hall temple in Hanamakonda /Warangal was built during Chalukya period. The Kakathiya sculptors built it in 1163 under Rudhra Deva’s rule. During Muslim invasion some of the structures were damaged. Three hundred Pillars are fused with one another. In Karnataka Moodabidri, a Jain temple has also a mandap called ‘1000 pillar temple’. But only in Tamil Nadu we see at least 985 pillars plus the inside temple with more pillars making it to 1000. Other places though they call it “1000 pillar”, what they mean is a lot of pillars.

Rig Vedic Concept– Huge mansion of a 1000 columns:-
What is the origin of the 1000 pillared halls? Who conceived the idea?
It is in the Rig Veda, the oldest scripture in the world!!

RV 5-62-1 (Hymn to Mitra – Varuna)
“B y your high law, firm order is established there where they loose for Surya’s horses.
Ten hundred stood together; there I looked on this the most marvellous Deities’ one chief glory.

RV 5-62-6
With hands that shed no blood, guarding the pious, whom Varuna, you save amid oblations.
You two, together, kings of willing spirit, uphold dominion based on thousand pillars.
Probably this hymn inspired our sculptors to construct a thousand pillared halls.

Indian sculptors in Mayan lands
I have already written several articles about the connection between the Indian and Mayan civilizations. Hindus migrated to South America around 3100 BCE after the burning of Kandava Forest by Arjuna and Krishna. Maya Danava went to South America, who was the originator of Mayan culture. Now and then Indians visited Mayan cities via South East Asia. Around the eighth century CE, they went to Chichen Itza in Mexico and created one of the largest cities. They constructed ‘1000 pillared hall’ there. Now we see hundreds of columns in rows. It had roof over them long ago.

Chichen itza is remarkable for one thing. A lot of people of different races and countries visited it for trading. It had huge market complex. The 1000 columns of Chichen itza stood in front of the Temple of the Warriors which have sculptures of warriors and animals like we have in 1000 pillared halls of Hindu temples. This place occupied four and half acres. The columns supported carved wooden beams.

Concept of Thousand Pillared Halls has been there for over at least 3500 years. The halls in Madurai and Sirangam are shining in their full glory and splendour.

Post No.1150; Dated 5th July 2014.

This is the third part of S Nagarajan’ article on the Puranas. First two parts were published in the past two days.

caste-system-in-hinduism

Caste Divisions in Ancient Tamil Nadu

Pyramid_of_Caste_system_in_India

Research article written by London Swaminathan
Post No. 1148; 4th July 2014.

Caste divisions existed in ancient Tamil Nadu like other parts of India. Tamils were divided on the basis of four castes and on the basis of work they did. There were references about ‘high born’ and ‘low born’ in the Sangam Tamil Literature.

There were mentions about four types of soldiers: Chariot, Elephant Brigade, Cavalry and Foot soldiers (Ratha,Gaja,Thuraga,Pathathi) as well. When we look at the whole picture with such divisions of castes, soldiers, Eight Types of Marriages, Nava Rasa, Six Seasons and so on in the Sangam literature, we have to accept that there was no difference between Tamils and other communities 2000 years ago.

There was a mischievous propaganda by people with vested interests that all these divisions were “imported” from the “Aryan North” into Tamil Nadu. But great saints like Kanchi Paramacharya, Aurobindo and great Tamil scholars like U V Saminathaiyer have pointed out that pure Tamil words coined from Tamil roots were used for Yaga, Veda and Castes from the days of the oldest Tamil book Tolkappaiam. It shows that they were part and parcel of Tamil society and nothing was brought into Tamil Nadu from outside.

The surprising thing about the ancient Tamil community of Sangam period is each of the five landscape divisions had Upper Castes and Lower castes. Even the poets of Sangam and Post Sangam period did not hesitate to call them “Hey, Ye Low Born!”

Following are the five landscape divisions according to ancient commentators:

1.Kurinchi (Mountainous Areas)
Higher castes: Poruppan, Verpan, Silamban, Kodichy
Lower castes: Kuravar, Kurathiyar, Kanavar

2.Mullai (Forest regions)
Higher castes: Nadan, Thonral, Manaivi, Kizathi
Lower castes: Idaiyar, Idaichiyar, Ayar, Aychiyar

3.Marutam (Countryside
Higher castes:Uran, Makiznan, Manaivi, Kizathi
Lower castes: uzavar, Uzaththiyar, Kadaiyar, Kadaichiyar
4.Neytal (Seashore)
Higher castes:Serppan, Thuraivan, Pulamban, Parathi, Nulaichi
Lower castes: Nulaiyar, Nulaichiyar, Parathar, Parathiar, Alavar, Alathiyar

5.Palai (Wasteland/arid lands)
Higher castes:Vidalai, Igulai, Meeli, Eyitri
Lower castes:Maravar, Eyinar, Eyitriar, Marathiyar

Nobody now knows what these caste names meant. We have explanations for some words.

The Caste System During Vedic Civilisation

Foreign “scholars” have mischievously deleted them from the table of Five Landscapes in English books. They have mentioned only such things that suited their wishful thinking. But the ancient list is still available in all the old Tamil commentaries. Old Tamil commentators have clearly mentioned them as “low and high” castes and explained them in their commentaries.

There are many more names like Kuyavar,Kollan, Thachan, Kuthan,Vanikan which are based on the work they did. But Tamils did not hesitate to use Sanskrit words such as Thachan, Vanikan etc.

The word for Brahmin occurs in hundreds of places with different epithets. Brahmins had the highest number of references. Too many to list here! (I have given in my post “No Brahmin! No Tamil!!” all the contributions made by great Brahmin poets like Kabilar, Paranar, Nakkirar and Mamulanar.

Manu Sloka in Purananauru!!

Pandya King Nedunchezian has composed a beautiful (Purananuru 183) verse about the value of education 2000 years ago. He says even if a person of the lowest caste among the four castes is educated, the high caste person would salute (pay respects to) him. Even a mother would show more affection towards the educated son than the illiterate one.

Manu said the same in the Manu Smriti:–

“A man who has faith may receive good learning even from a man who is lower, the ultimate law even from a man of the lowest castes, and a jewel of a woman even from a bad family”–2-239

“Ambrosia may be extracted even from poison,
And good advice even from a child,
Good behaviour even from enemy
And gold even from something impure “– 2-240

“Women, jewels, learning, law, purification, good advice and various crafts may be acquired from anybody” – 2-241

“In extremity, it is permissible to learn Veda from someone who is not a priest and to walk behind him and obey him like a Guru as long as the instruction lasts”- 2-242

Tiruvalluvar also said the same in Tamil Veda Tirukkural (409)
“Though high born, an unlettered man is deemed lower than a learned man of lower birth. “—Kural 409.
During Krita Yuga (Golden Age), there was only one caste i.e. Brahmins, according to Santi Parva chapter 186 of Mahabharata.

Non Hindu foreign “scholars” deliberately spread a lie that Shudras are non-Aryans. But Vedas clearly say that they are part of the same Mahapurusha in the Purushasuktam of Rig Veda.

Chanakya of Arthashastra (3rd century BCE) treats all the four Varna as Aryans (not a word with racial meaning as foreigners used, but meaning ‘cultured’).

Those who read Rig Veda, Manu and Arthashastra would know that all the four castes were part of one community. Untouchability and modern caste differences were unknown in the Vedic period.

Hey! Ye Low Born! In Purananuru

Tudiyan caste is addressed as low born (Izisina in Tamil) in the verses 82 and 287 of Purananuru by poet Sathanthaiyar.

Poet Damodaran of verse 170 and Kazathalaiyar of verse 289 also used this word “low born” (Izisina).
Mangudi Kizar of verse 335 mentioned all the four lower castes :Tudiyam Panan, Paraiyan and Kadampan.
Lowest caste Pulaiyas did all the works at crematorium, according to verse 360.
Since Purananuru is considered the oldest section in the Sangam literature, I have quoted above verses from the same. Other sections of Sangam literature have a lot of references. Silappadikarm, Tamil epic of fifth century CE, mentioned the caste system and in which part of the city each and every caste lived etc.
In short it was the same caste system throughout India. But no one was discriminated against on the basis of caste in Tamil Nadu. In a vast geographical region each and every community lived in their own sphere happily with all the basic needs like food, shelter and clothing. If at all there was poverty, it had nothing to do with the caste system.

Oldest Tamil book Tolkappaiam also refer to the caste system in several places.
The word “Four Varna” is used in Tamil epic Silappadikaram: 6-164, 14-183, 14-212, 22-10; Manimekalai 6-56.

caste-system-in-hinduism

Silappadikaram 8-41 used the word “Jathi” (Saathi).
Words Varna and Jathi are used in Silappadikaram for the first time.

Maduraikanchi of Sangam Literature mentioned the “four different streets” for four different castes.
Brahmin streets known as Agraharam existed till 75 years ago in Tamil Nadu. Brahmins only lived in that area. Whole villages given to Brahmins by the kings were mentioned in thousands of Tamil inscriptions.
Some people who study the constructions and structures in the Indus Valley Cities believe that the caste system originated there. It is debatable.

Priest who changed New Moon Day to “Full Moon Day”!!

Abhirami-and-Bhattar-painted-by-Keshav

Written by London Swaminathan
Post No.1144; Dated 2nd July 2014.

Tamils bless newly married couple with auspicious yellow rice (akshathai) greeting them with the words “Let you get Sixteen and Long Live”. Even villagers people, though illiterate, know the ‘sixteen’ does not mean sixteen children, but sixteen essential things in life. Of the three Tamil poets listed the good things that needed in life the most famous sixteen came from a saitly devotee who composed a verse with all the sixteen essentials. It is part of Abhirami Ammai Pathikam- a decad on Goddess Abirami of Tirukkadavur in Tamil Nadu.

There is a very interesting story behind that poet. Subramanya Iyer was his original name, but became popular with the new name Abhirami Bhattar after a miracle. Subramanyam lived in the later part of the 18th century. His father Amirthalinga Iyer was a great scholar and musician. Subramanyam studied music, Tamil and Sanskrit. He did not seek any employment because his mind was after spiritual things. He became a great devotee of the local deity Goddess Abhirami, another name for Shiva’s wife.

He lived mostly in the temple meditating upon the glory of the goddess. After seeing his strange behaviour, people thought he became mad. King Sarabhoji of Thanjavur used to visit the temple. One day he visited the temple when all except Subramanyam paid respect to the king. The king became angry and asked who that arrogant fellow was. People gave him different versions, with both positive and negative things about Subramanyam. King wanted to test him and so asked him what day was it? Was it a full moon day or new moon day?

He replied at once, “It is a full moon day”. Actually it was a new moon day (Amavasya in Hindu calendar). The king thought that he deliberately insulted him and ordered that he should be executed if he did not show the moon on that day. The man who always saw the glorious light of the goddess thought that it was full moon. Later he realised his mistake and prayed to goddess to save him.

Abirami

His prayer was a beautiful hymn with 100 verses. It is called Abhirami Andhathi. When he sang the 79th verse, goddess took off her ear stud and threw it in the air. And lo, the full moon appeared on the sky and bathed the village in bright light. He continued his composition and finished at 100 verses.

King Saraboji who was camping in the nearby town also saw the sudden light in the sky. He rushed to the temple and fell at the feet of Subramanyam and begged his pardon. The king honoured him with the title Abhirami Bhattar. Andhathi is a genre where the last word of the first stanza will be the first word of the next verse. It will go on like this up to 100. And the last word of the 100th stanza should be the first word of the first stanza! It is a garland of words to a God or Goddess.
Abhirami Bhattar composed also Abhiramai pathikam and prayed for the sixteen. The sixteen things he wanted are as follows:

A Prayer Found in Chester Cathedral

Give me good digestion, Lord,
And also something to digest;
Give me a healthy body, Lord,
With sense to keep it at its best.

Give me a healthy mind, good Lord,
To keep the pure and good in sight;
Which, seeing sin, is not applauded,
But find a way to set it right.

Give me a mind that is not bored,
That does not whimper, wine and sigh;
Don’t let me worry overmuch
About the fussy thing called “I”.

Give me a sense of humour, Lord,
Give the grace to see a joke;
To get some happiness from life,
And pass it on to other folk.

We need lot of money!

One more list:

What We Need

A little dash of purpose,
An effort made to cheer,
A little more of courage,
And less of doubt and fear;
A little more of lifting,
And pulling all our weight,
A little less of leaning,
And leaving it to fate.

A little less of grabbing,
Of selfishness and greed,
A little more of helping,
A fellow that’s in need;
A little more of working,
With smiles instead of frowns,
A little less of kicking,
A fellow when he down.

A little less complaining,
About the things that mar,
A little more adapting,
To all the things that are;
A little more of caring,
And willingness to fight,
A little more of daring,
For what we feel is right.

A little splash of humour,
To brighten up the way,
A little joy to follow,
And linger through the day;
A little touch of laughter,
To cause a little mirth,
Is simply what we’re needing,
To gladden this old earth.

With sense to keep it at its best.

Give me a healthy mind, good Lord,
To keep the pure and good in sight;
Which, seeing sin, is not applauded,
But find a way to set it right.

Give me a mind that is not bored,
That does not whimper, wine and sigh;
Don’t let me worry overmuch
About the fussy thing called “I”.

Give me a sense of humour, Lord,
Give the grace to see a joke;
To get some happiness from life,
And pass it on to other folk.

What We Need

A little dash of purpose,
An effort made to cheer,
A little more of courage,
And less of doubt and fear;
A little more of lifting,
And pulling all our weight,
A little less of leaning,
And leaving it to fate.

A little less of grabbing,
Of selfishness and greed,
A little more of helping,
A fellow that’s in need;
A little more of working,
With smiles instead of frowns,
A little less of kicking,
A fellow when he down.

A little less complaining,
About the things that mar,
A little more adapting,
To all the things that are;
A little more of caring,
And willingness to fight,
A little more of daring,
For what we feel is right.

A little splash of humour,
To brighten up the way,
A little joy to follow,
And linger through the day;
A little touch of laughter,
To cause a little mirth,
Is simply what we’re needing,
To gladden this old earth.

Please read my earlier post “107 Miracle Herbs in the Hindu Vedas” – posted on 16th September 2013.

Rig Veda is the oldest religious scripture in the world. It is not only a religious book but also an encyclopaedia of Hindu culture. We get a picture of India that existed several thousand years ago. Since it is mainly religious, we can’t expect everything under the sun in this book. But from the diseases and medicines mentioned in it, we get a glimpse of the health problems and solutions in ancient India. Of the four Vedas, Atharvaveda (AV) gives us more information in the field of health problems.

Vedas mention about 75 plants. But not all of them are herbs. They mentioned herbs as ‘Oshadi’ in general.
The medical science has advanced to a high degree in the Vedic period and we hear about Asvins fixing an iron leg (artificial leg) to a lady who lost her legs. They are the Doctors of the Gods and the friends of the sick and the unfortunate. Later literature confirmed several transplant operations in Susruta’s books and Tamil literature, where a Pandya king was given an artificial Golden Hand. Several eye transplants are described in the religious Hindu and Buddhist literature.

Lord Shiva himself is called the medicine and the doctor (Beshajam & Bhishak) in the Vedas.
Vedas mentioned mainly the heart and lung diseases. Other two diseases mentioned are leprosy and jaundice. But the Vedas are not medical books, so what we get is an incomplete picture.

Heart Diseases in the Vedas
Hrdayaamaya – Heart problem—is mentioned in the Atharvaveda in connection with Yaksma and with Balaasa. Balaasa is consumption (pulmonary tuberclosis) in the later medical books. Source: Vedic index, page 507
Hrdu is another word with unknown meaning. It is found in Atharvaveda 1-25-2.3. Weber thinks it is cramps ( I think it is angina).
Hariman – Jaundice is found in both RV 1-50-2 and AV 1-22-1, 9-8-9, 19-44-2. It means yellowness.

I add the following information from “Common Life in the Rgveda and Atharvaveda” by Chhanda Chakraborty, 1997

Female diseases of the uterus is are referred to in RV 10-162-1
Obstruction to pregnancy and death of the foetus are also mentioned 10-162-3
The word Visuuci in RV 10-74-2 as an adjective to ‘amiva’ (sickness) seems to denote infectious diseases.
Deformities like blindness and lameness have occasionally mentioned. There are also references which say that their vision was restored.

SPICES_1468208f
RV refers to a poison named Vandana (7-50-2) grown in the joints of the trees. In the same passage, a poison is said to cause inflammation of the knees and heels (may be arthritis).
Oshadi, which means a medicinal herb, is mentioned in the following places in the Rig Veda:–
1-166-5; 3-34-10; 4-33-7; 5-41-8; 6-21-9; 7-4-5; 8-27-2, 10-145-1
At some places (10-145-1), it is stated to possess wonderful power e.g. bringing people under control.

Naturopathy
Sunshine (1-5011), water (7-50-4) and fire (7-50-2) are occasionally stated to cure some diseases, especially caused by poison.

Ajaka (RV 7-50-1) – the disease is stated to be caused by poison.
Harimana (1-50-11) – Sayana describes it as causing the body to be haridvarna. In this context ‘harit’ perhaps means pale yellow. It may mean jaundice. Sunshine is stated to cure the disease.
Hrdroga (1-5011) – heart disease, but nature of the sickness is not explained.
Sriipada (7-50-4) Details are NOT available in Sayana’s commentary or in the text.
Yaksma 1-122-9 probably consumption (TB); Chest disease.
Arthritis? 7-50-2 – inflammation of the knee and heels
Tenth Mandala of RV 10-85-31, 10-97-12, 10-137-4, 10-163.1 gives details of health problems
Atharvaveda has a long list of ailments. Nearly 40 complaints are listed by the author with references. I just give the names of the diseases below:

doctor3

Ajnaataarus (wounds and sours), aksata-vrana (tumour), aksi roga (eye disease), alaji (optical isease), apacit (Scrofula), Apasmaara (Mania, epilepsy), Arista (epilepsy), aasarika (severe pain on different limbs), Aasraava (according to Sayana mutraatisara=diabetes; atisara=diarrhoea, nadivranaadi=ulcer;raktasraava=hemorrhage)
Asthibhanga (fracture); Balaasa (precise meaning is not found in the Vedas. But Ayurveda use this to mention kapha, salesman(phlegm)
Gandamaalaa (Scrofula); Graahi (fit caused by a demoness); Hrdyota (Heart Disease); Jalodara (dropsy); Jaayaanya (boil or wound); Kamilaka (see pandu roga)
Kaasa (cough); Ksetriga (congenital disease); Lohita (flow of blood); Mutramocana (release of obstructed urine); Pakshahata (paralysis)
Pandu (jaundice); Prstaamaya (pain in ribs); Raajayakshma (venereal disease)
Siroroga (head ache); Slesmapaatana (Expectoration); Suula (Rheumatism)
Svetakushta (leucoderma); Samskndha, viskandha (Sayana says emaciation of the body and loss of movement. Some others expalain it as rheumatism)
Takman (fever); Trsnaa(excessive thirst); Vidratha (abcess); Visara, Visarika (severe pain in Limbs); Vrana (wound).

This list may not be useful to everyone. But it gives us some idea about the health problems faced by the ancient society and their purpose to list them in the Vedas. When they talk about the diseases caused by ‘demons’ etc, they mean only bacteria and other germs. Like they explained the eclipse as snakes devouring sun and moon ( by Rahu, Ketu) to a layman, they explained that some diseases were caused by demons. Hindu astrologers knew very well the movements of the planets and calculated the exact time of eclipses, but yet described it for a layman with snake story. Even now doctors do not explain everything to a layman; they simply give the medicine and cure it. This was the approach of the ancient communities.
For those who need the complete references regarding plants and diseases, please refer to the Vedic Index by Keith and MacDonnell and Rgveda and Atharvaveda by Chhanda Chakraborty.
